Happy New Year!!! (that sentiment will make sense in a little while – hold tight)
The time had come to bid adieu to the fan in our bedroom so we could introduce a light fixture with a bit more interest.
Hold on fan lovers. Put the pitchforks (or fan blades?) down and let me explain. We also removed the ceiling fan in our first home’s bedroom and picked up a high-powered Hunter table fan that did the trick, which we plan to use regularly in the warmer months here as well. It’s not that we’re anti fan – my wife likes to make the beyond corny joke that we’re “fan fans” – but we just like them to be well placed so form and function collide into a big beautiful fan-tastic situation. Like the fan in our sunroom (and the one in our last house’s sunroom) which we’d never dream of removing. But when it came to the bedroom the our big old ceiling fan certainly wasn’t playing nice with Ed the Bed:
As for its replacement, on a recent trip to Ikea we picked up this guy: the Maskros pendant lamp (it comes in two sizes, but the bigger one would have practically been Sherry-sized, so we went for the smaller one that’s still 22 inches in diameter). It felt like a good “statement piece” for the bedroom (and only ran us 50 beans) so we were psyched that we finally pulled the trigger and made it ours after a few months of pining. We realize that this is one of those polarizing purchases, but it makes us smile like crazy so we said yes to something fun.
And although it was quite the statement piece when hanging in Ikea, when it arrived home with us, the only statement it was making was “put me together.”
But first the ol’ fan had to come down. So with the electricity to the entire house turned off (we’re safety freaks like that) I went to work disassembling it – a process that I’m pretty well versed at in at this point in my life. Though I have only recently discovered that it’s much easier to remove all of the blades first (so you don’t end up whacking yourself in the head while trying to disconnect the rest of it from the fixture box).
Unfortunately, removing the fan revealed some less than perfect ceiling behind it. Unfinished paint and what looked like a square patch panel that wasn’t sitting flush with the rest of the ceiling. Bummer.
So I decided to borrow a solution from Clara’s damaged ceiling dilemma and darted out to Home Depot to buy yet another ceiling medallion for $19. You can read more about the super-easy ceiling medallion installation process in this post.
Technically you’re not supposed to attach any of the “spokes” to the fixture until after it’s secured to the ceiling. But since we needed to strategically hang it low enough to sit under Ed’s top rail, but high enough to not look ridiculous, we used a couple of attached spokes to approximate its finished size and find the perfect hanging height.
Oh and Ikea suggests just coiling the extra wire inside of the cup at the top of the fixture, but I opted to cut the wire closer to our desired length by taking some scissors to the cord and then stripping the ends of the now-shortened wires.
So here it is completely hooked up with all of the spokes attached. We realized at this point that we were glad we used the ceiling medallion because it made the fixture look a bit more substantial and balanced, instead of hanging a giant ball from a little nub in the middle of the ceiling. Plus, if we ever paint the ceiling it’ll add even more detail and polish.
Of course we still had to attached the 82 (yep, 82) paper “flowers” that came in the set. They really are just paper asterisk-thingies that are pre-cut and pre-hole-punched to snap into place. So theoretically you could color them or replace them entirely with your own desired shape if you wanted to – and had the patience to make 82 of them. We briefly debated “going rogue” and spraying the back of them a color, but we liked the clean white look (crazy shape and size + classic color = love for us sometimes). Oh and you can also see how Ikea packaged them in small boxes to help curl the edges outward in this pic below:
Here’s the light with the first few rows of flowers attached, starting to look more like what we saw in the showroom…
After about 10 minutes we had all 82 attached and were left with this. Ta-dah! We were more than a little relieved that it didn’t take five hundred years to assemble (which was kind of the fear after we opened the box).
We’ll admit that at first it felt a bit bigger than we expected (it looked a lot smaller in the giant warehouse that is Ikea when we first laid eyes on it), but once we add things like a larger 8 x 10 rug under Ed (instead of three smaller they’re-there-because-we-have-them rugs) and some art on the walls, there will be more scale slash balance going on. And even without future items like a big cushy rug, it only took a few hours for it to totally grow on us. As in every time we walk into the room we grin. And about 50% of the time we actually high five. It’s just so much fun. And if you can’t have a little fun in the privacy of your own bedroom, where can you have it? Wait, that came out wrong.
It’s definitely the playful wow kind of “statement piece” that we were looking for. And although from the angle above it looks like it’s snuggled right up in Ed’s business, you can see from the pic above that they aren’t actually touching at all. And even though it hangs low in the room (the bulb sits just above my eye level), we love that we can get away with that because it’s an area that we’ll never walk through (because of Ed and the bench at his footboard). Take that 8 foot ceilings! We defy you.
As much as we love how crisp and soft it looks during the daylight, it looks like our own little Times Square New Year’s Eve ball at night. Sherry loves to walk into the room at night and say “3… 2… 1” and flick on the light while squealing “Happy New Year!”
It only accepts a 40 watt bulb, so it’s definitely not something that’ll flood your room with light, but for us it’s the perfect addition to the soft and moody lighting that we’ve already got going on thanks to our recently added side table lamps and the light over the vanity in our bedroom’s sink nook.
Plus, it is soooo cool to look at from bed. We didn’t even consider this POV when picking it, but when our heads hit the pillow it’s perfectly reflected in our bathroom mirror. How’s that for a nice added bonus? Oh, and I’m sorry ladies, but me and my sexy socked feet are taken (Sherry’s a lucky lady).
Oh and the light is centered in the room (and on that doorway and the bed) so the slight left-ish shift that you see above is just thanks to the angle of the shot that I snapped.
So there you have it. The little big slice of “hey now” that we added to our bedroom. It certainly doesn’t make us miss the old fan (which we’re donating to the ReStore) and it never fails to make us giddy. What can I say? Warning: pun coming. It lights my fire. Oh, and we should mention that Clara is crazy fascinated by the flowers themselves. We’d let her get near them if we could trust her not to put one of the paper flowers in a death grip and tear it off towards her mouth. So for now it’s just for looking.
Do any of you own Mr Maskros yourselves? Or are there any other dramatic and large-scaled light fixtures that you’re into lately?
Psst- There have been a few requests for more photos from other angles, so here they are:
Clara likey.
Update: Things definitely take some time to shake out around here. So if you wanna see how Ed the Bed and our new light evolved, click here and here. Ah tweaks. Gotta love ’em!

Ah, look at you and your clever pendant-reflection-in-the-mirror picture! Nicely done. :)

the medallion suits it so well!
i bet taking the top rails off of Ed would give it a cleaner look. just sayin’.
love you guys!

I am sooooo jealous. I’ve been looking at this lamp for the past month and a half. When I saw it in your post, my heart stopped. I want it in my living room, but my ceiling are 8 feet. Do you think it would fit? Everything looks smaller at Ikea and you get a big surprise when you get back home.
Thanks,
Judith
YoungHouseLove says
If it’s a place that you’ll be walking through (not centered over a table, bench, bed, high stairwell, etc) it might be too low. It’s 22″ wide plus there’s the drop from the cord, so maybe try hanging string from the ceiling at around 30″ to see what you think of that “drop” in your space? But if you’re putting it over the coffee table in the living room (where no one will walk) it should look amazing! Good luck!

If I walked into Ikea and saw this hanging there, I would immediately think “that lamp is sooo YHLovers style!” I love it. It adds that special oomph to your room.
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, so funny! Here we are thinking we’re doing something crazy and so many of you pegged it as “our style” already!

Caitlin @ Desert Domicile says
Great minds think alike! The larger version of the Maskros is hanging in my living room :) It fills my 18′ high ceilings very well and casts awesome shadows onto them and the walls at night!
Amy says
I continue to be impressed with how gracefully you both handle criticism.
I think sometimes people forget that this is your *home* and that your design decisions aren’t up for a vote, they are what *you* want.
Jessie says
I agree. After reading the comments here, I realized that I could never have a home improvement/design blog, because if I got all the criticism they’re getting, I’d get super defensive and be like, “WHATEVA! I DO WHAT I WANT!” …and then I’d lose readers, lol.
Kudos to you, John and Sherry for being so diplomatic.
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, the hysterical thing about your comment is that I totally scream “I do what I want” to John all the time. It’s my catch phrase. Usually after he says things like “why don’t you come watch TV with me.” I scream it and then I sit down and watch TV and say “to be perfectly clear, I’m watching TV because I want to, not because you asked me to.” Haha. Maybe you have to be there to get the dynamic.
Anyway, about decorating suggestions from strangers, the funny thing is that it has somehow gotten very easy for us to let other people’s comments roll right off of our backs these days. How can we expect everyone to love every single thing that we do in our house? We definitely know that we’re making a lot of choices that won’t jive with everyone’s personal preferences, since we’re having a lot more fun with color, pattern, and texture in this house. Besides, sometimes when we do something and everyone loves it it’s boring and probably way to safe. Bring on the controversy! Haha.

SO JEALOUS! I have been eyeing this one forever and I would do the same thing in a heartbeat, but alas, no ceiling wiring. Hubster and I don’t have the skill to run something like that ourselves. I can keep dreaming for that magical day when we’ve saved up enough pennies to have the house re-wired (which we need anyway).
Kat says
Man, I knew this is what you guys were going to install when you mentioned it yesterday! I love it!
jamie says
My husband was really drawn to the Maskros on our last ikea visit. It’s so interesting and unique, but my first thoughts were, how the heck do you clean that thing?!? I couldn’t figure it out, so we didn’t buy it.
YoungHouseLove says
We’ve heard that feather dusters work (John actually googled around for cleaning idea, haha) and someone recommended spraying canned air on it, which sounds like fun. We’ll have to report back on the dust/cleaning factor!

I can only dream of being able to put up such an awesome light; however, we live in Texas and not having a ceiling fan is unheard of. It is amazing what a huge difference that light made. Great job guys.

hmmm i hate to say it but i think its way too big and takes away from the bed way too much. Maybe if it wasnt RIGHT on top of the bed? I mean, i like the light….just not in this space. I see it more above a dining table or a play room art/craft table would be awesome! or even above the table in the living room area.
I agree with the no fan, but i cant say im a fan of this for the bedroom at all. sorry.
Melissa says
Just wondering–what happened to the “Clara” rug from your old den? Did you sell it before the move? Seems like it might fit nicely in the living room.
YoungHouseLove says
It’s in the playroom. Since it’s only a 5 x 8 rug (the rooms in our last house were much smaller) it won’t work with our huge sectional in the living room, but we love it so much that we can’t bear to part with it, so it’s living happily in our cluttered playroom for now.

I love it!! I think it looks so nice with the bed. I can’t wait for Clara to get old enough to jump on the end of the bed and give it a high five. That’s what my kids would do. :)
Crystal @Beautifulhaven says
What a bold choice! I love it. I can definitely see your style changing from your old home.
Snickrsnack Katie says
I totally love you guys and 99 percent of what you do, but this just fell flat for me. That is a cool light fixture… but with that bed… no way. It looks very odd hanging there below bed’s top rails. If the fan seemed awkward, I don’t know how this doesn’t seem double awkward. But as you said, to each his own! I do appreciate the aesthetics of the fixture itself – it would totally be rockin’ if you had a different bed. Even so… I sort of think it hangs too low. Like it should be up closer to the ceiling.
I dunno. What do I know? LOL. No matter what, good work getting something that you guys love!

I love it!! I wanted to do something crazy like this in our dining room (its decorated “NY” style and needs some pizzazz!) but my hubby wouldnt go for anything of the “different” but cool light fixtures at IKEA. We settled on a nice, nickle-and-glass fixture that is really pretty and adds some modern feeling to the room – but it doesnt kick you in the face like I would like it too! Ah, marriage…sometimes its all about the compromise:)
We have a simliar fan in our bedroom, its SO ugly…brown wood and brass – yuck! Have you guys ever re-vamped a fan? I was thinking about it, but have no idea how?
YoungHouseLove says
Yes! We added a shade to our old den fan (so easy). Here’s that post for ya: https://www.younghouselove.com/2008/01/fan-tastic/
You can also easily remove the fan blades and even the whole fan base and spray paint them (just google around for tutorials). Good luck!

love this fixture! we bought it to hang about our dining room table, but haven’t hung it yet. there is not currently a light there, so we need an electrician to hook us up. but, we might hang it just for looks until then.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE how the height of the bed posts and the hanging light fixture plays off one another! I think it looks amazing. Good job!
Amy says
I love the fixture, but don’t care for it in that space. I think a different, smaller pendant would look better, and perhaps moved further away from the lines of the bed. But I am glad you are happy with it!
Emily says
I just put the big one in my nursery and I love it! I love yours with the ceiling medallion. It really fancies up the plastic cup at the top. My only issue with the Mascros is that the plastic frame in the center is not a white-white color. It’s more of a cheap-yellow/white-plastic color, and it bugs me! Do you have the same problem? Have you done anything about it? I’m wondering if I should paint it.
YoungHouseLove says
Really?! That’s so funny! Maybe ours was made with a different material since we just got it? The plastic is definitely sort of an off-white when compared to the white paper but it’s not really yellow-y and hardly noticable (I just ran in and stared at it to be sure, haha). Maybe you could take the spokes off and spray paint it though? Good luck!

I knew you were going for that light from your little teaser a week or so ago! I love it. Saw it in on of my glossies three in a row in a kitchen design and fell head-over-heels. I am still trying to decide whether one will go in our foyer or our bedroom!
annabelvita says
I think this would look great with a starburst mirror over the bed head (or a diy version of that coconut one that you loved and lost!)

I had the day off Monday and watched some Martha Stewart reruns. She showed the same light and I fell in love with it then. I was so excited to see that you purchased the same one I just saw on tv! Martha used it in a nursery and also mentioned that a friend had used three of them in her kitchen. Nursery, Kitchen, Master Bedroom…this light can be used anywhere!

Which Ikea do you go to – or do you order everything on-line?

while were in the bedroom…. we recently downgraded from a california king to a queen. so we are going to take the opportunity to redo our room. we are going to be building the frame and headboard. we have two brown pieces of furniture in the room that we would like to paint or stain. how do you determine what to paint what? do you match everything or do you paint one piece white and the rest a dark stain?! im confused!
YoungHouseLove says
We like a mixed and matched look so things don’t look like they were all purchased in a matching set, but it’s really all about personal preference. Medium to dark wood tones look great with white painted furniture, but you can even have fun by mixing wood with painted pieces (we’ve seen gorgeous emerald green dressers that make a statement or cheerful yellow nightstands). Maybe find an inspiration room in a magazine and use that as a starting point? Good luck!

I really like it, and I think I can visualize that it’s not right on top of the bed as the 2D suggests. And I scanned, but maybe missed it in the 250 comments – did you say how many inches from the bedrail to the light rod? It looks about 12-18 to me.
(ps… any way to put in a latest-comments button?) would be cool.
YoungHouseLove says
Yup, you’re right! It’s around 14″ from Ed’s rail to the light rod. As for a latest-comment button, we’d love to add one. Whenever we mess with comments we crash, so it might take us a while. Haha. It’s on our list though for sure!

When you had something fun in mind for a light fixture, the Maskros immediately jumped into my head…we have it in our basement playroom and love it!! I’m not sure how cleaning it will go…but I have visions of myself holding one of those desk cleaner spray thingers. Enjoy your new light!
Lindsay says
I’m loving the feel of this one. I’m not surprised that there are some commenters who are not huge fans, but whatever. The light and the shadows it makes(!!) are gorgeous and if you two love it, that’s all that matters. It’s the slightly “out of the box” ideas that end up being the most inspiring ones. Sure, if you had picked some more typical light fixture, you may have gotten a more universal, “yes, that looks nice” response, but not only would no one (including you!) be wow-ed, it also wouldn’t have gotten me thinking about what other non-standard looking light fixtures might be around that could work in MY house. So thanks for that!
Also, I continue to be amazed at how well you both handle weird criticisms from strangers. I consider myself calm and hard to irritate, but there’s NO WAY I could respond as nicely as you always do. :)
YoungHouseLove says
You managed to explain what I couldn’t find the words to say here:
Sure, if you had picked some more typical light fixture, you may have gotten a more universal, “yes, that looks nice” response, but not only would no one (including you!) be wow-ed, it also wouldn’t have gotten me thinking about what other non-standard looking light fixtures might be around that could work in MY house.”
That’s exactly how we feel! Lately we’ve been falling head over heels in love with items (and things like paint color decisions) in a way that we never did in our first house. So while that calm, beachy, and airy approach might have been much more overarching and relatable to the majority, we’re definitely making a concerted effort to go for things that aren’t as safe this time around (even if that means sometimes being in the minority)! Because if at every point we went with the safest or most universally appealing thing, our house would be a lot more vanilla than what we’re attracted to these days (since Clara was born actually) which is color, texture, and pattern. Things like this fun dandelion-esque light and our deep teal guest room walls just make us smile! So they’re well worth the risk and the “controversy” that goes with them. Haha.
xo,
s
Rebecca @ the lil house that could says
I’ve felt the same way about my new house and wanting to take risks. In our old condo, I was often told it looked like a model home. Which was a compliment, but aren’t model homes a little generic? And I feel anyone can make their house nice and generally pleasing. But to make it unique and totally you? That takes a lot of effort and outside the box thinking! Not everyone is going to like it, some people are nice and comfy inside the box :)
So anyway, keep the outside the box coming! Your bold paint choices are some of my favorite posts to date :)

The fixture is not my cup of tea, but I can appreciate that you guys love it and, as other commenters have said, as long as it floats YOUR boat, that’s all that matters. However, I gotta say that I really thought you guys were going with a more mature, sophisiticated, “luxe” look in your new house. So far, a lot of the choices you’ve been making read very young and juvenile to me. This light fixture is an example, as is your duvet (seems very “dorm like” to me) and the entire color palette of the guest room. I love that you are experimenting with so many new bold, moody colors, but I think the execution sometimes actually goes in the complete opposite direction than what I *thought* you were going for. Maybe I just misunderstood some of the earlier posts where you described the mood and feel you were going for with the new house. This is just my very humble opinion…I am by no means any kind of decor expert or anything like that.
Anyway, keep up the great work! It’s so fun to see the house come together one step at a time.
YoungHouseLove says
If this light and our duvet are dorm room-ish, then I guess we wanna go back to college! Haha. We don’t really know what our style is (we’ve never really liked labels) but colors, patterns, and textures are making us giddy these days. But feel free to find another blog that’s a bit more your speed if you think we jumped the shark. Haha. We know firsthand that design is definitely a subjective thing!
xo,
s
Jen says
No, I really love your blog and I think I (and other readers) gain a lot from watching the whole process of turning a house into a home unfold before our eyes, little by little, with a realistic budget and a realistic timeline. I guess I’m just a little disappointed because so far the aesthetic is not exactly what I was picturing based on your previous descriptions, mood boards, etc.
Anyway, I read plenty of other decor blogs with gorgeous pictures that are much more my speed, but you guys really bring something valuable and unique to the proverbial blogosphere table. Just because I don’t like some of the choices you’re making doesn’t make seeing you guys problem-solve and improve the house any less inspiring. Like I said the first time…keep up the good work! :)
Stephanie says
About the comment that the duvet looks dorm-room-ish, and the lamp choice juvenile, can I just say (A) I’d LOVE to meet college kids with such polished design sense and (B) I would have loved to have BEEN a college kid with as much design sense! What a snarky comment! I’m in LOVE with the lamp. In fact, I’m wondering if it will work in our nursery.
