Happy New Year!!! (that sentiment will make sense in a little while – hold tight)
The time had come to bid adieu to the fan in our bedroom so we could introduce a light fixture with a bit more interest.
Hold on fan lovers. Put the pitchforks (or fan blades?) down and let me explain. We also removed the ceiling fan in our first home’s bedroom and picked up a high-powered Hunter table fan that did the trick, which we plan to use regularly in the warmer months here as well. It’s not that we’re anti fan – my wife likes to make the beyond corny joke that we’re “fan fans” – but we just like them to be well placed so form and function collide into a big beautiful fan-tastic situation. Like the fan in our sunroom (and the one in our last house’s sunroom) which we’d never dream of removing. But when it came to the bedroom the our big old ceiling fan certainly wasn’t playing nice with Ed the Bed:
As for its replacement, on a recent trip to Ikea we picked up this guy: the Maskros pendant lamp (it comes in two sizes, but the bigger one would have practically been Sherry-sized, so we went for the smaller one that’s still 22 inches in diameter). It felt like a good “statement piece” for the bedroom (and only ran us 50 beans) so we were psyched that we finally pulled the trigger and made it ours after a few months of pining. We realize that this is one of those polarizing purchases, but it makes us smile like crazy so we said yes to something fun.
And although it was quite the statement piece when hanging in Ikea, when it arrived home with us, the only statement it was making was “put me together.”
But first the ol’ fan had to come down. So with the electricity to the entire house turned off (we’re safety freaks like that) I went to work disassembling it – a process that I’m pretty well versed at in at this point in my life. Though I have only recently discovered that it’s much easier to remove all of the blades first (so you don’t end up whacking yourself in the head while trying to disconnect the rest of it from the fixture box).
Unfortunately, removing the fan revealed some less than perfect ceiling behind it. Unfinished paint and what looked like a square patch panel that wasn’t sitting flush with the rest of the ceiling. Bummer.
So I decided to borrow a solution from Clara’s damaged ceiling dilemma and darted out to Home Depot to buy yet another ceiling medallion for $19. You can read more about the super-easy ceiling medallion installation process in this post.
Technically you’re not supposed to attach any of the “spokes” to the fixture until after it’s secured to the ceiling. But since we needed to strategically hang it low enough to sit under Ed’s top rail, but high enough to not look ridiculous, we used a couple of attached spokes to approximate its finished size and find the perfect hanging height.
Oh and Ikea suggests just coiling the extra wire inside of the cup at the top of the fixture, but I opted to cut the wire closer to our desired length by taking some scissors to the cord and then stripping the ends of the now-shortened wires.
So here it is completely hooked up with all of the spokes attached. We realized at this point that we were glad we used the ceiling medallion because it made the fixture look a bit more substantial and balanced, instead of hanging a giant ball from a little nub in the middle of the ceiling. Plus, if we ever paint the ceiling it’ll add even more detail and polish.
Of course we still had to attached the 82 (yep, 82) paper “flowers” that came in the set. They really are just paper asterisk-thingies that are pre-cut and pre-hole-punched to snap into place. So theoretically you could color them or replace them entirely with your own desired shape if you wanted to – and had the patience to make 82 of them. We briefly debated “going rogue” and spraying the back of them a color, but we liked the clean white look (crazy shape and size + classic color = love for us sometimes). Oh and you can also see how Ikea packaged them in small boxes to help curl the edges outward in this pic below:
Here’s the light with the first few rows of flowers attached, starting to look more like what we saw in the showroom…
After about 10 minutes we had all 82 attached and were left with this. Ta-dah! We were more than a little relieved that it didn’t take five hundred years to assemble (which was kind of the fear after we opened the box).
We’ll admit that at first it felt a bit bigger than we expected (it looked a lot smaller in the giant warehouse that is Ikea when we first laid eyes on it), but once we add things like a larger 8 x 10 rug under Ed (instead of three smaller they’re-there-because-we-have-them rugs) and some art on the walls, there will be more scale slash balance going on. And even without future items like a big cushy rug, it only took a few hours for it to totally grow on us. As in every time we walk into the room we grin. And about 50% of the time we actually high five. It’s just so much fun. And if you can’t have a little fun in the privacy of your own bedroom, where can you have it? Wait, that came out wrong.
It’s definitely the playful wow kind of “statement piece” that we were looking for. And although from the angle above it looks like it’s snuggled right up in Ed’s business, you can see from the pic above that they aren’t actually touching at all. And even though it hangs low in the room (the bulb sits just above my eye level), we love that we can get away with that because it’s an area that we’ll never walk through (because of Ed and the bench at his footboard). Take that 8 foot ceilings! We defy you.
As much as we love how crisp and soft it looks during the daylight, it looks like our own little Times Square New Year’s Eve ball at night. Sherry loves to walk into the room at night and say “3… 2… 1” and flick on the light while squealing “Happy New Year!”
It only accepts a 40 watt bulb, so it’s definitely not something that’ll flood your room with light, but for us it’s the perfect addition to the soft and moody lighting that we’ve already got going on thanks to our recently added side table lamps and the light over the vanity in our bedroom’s sink nook.
Plus, it is soooo cool to look at from bed. We didn’t even consider this POV when picking it, but when our heads hit the pillow it’s perfectly reflected in our bathroom mirror. How’s that for a nice added bonus? Oh, and I’m sorry ladies, but me and my sexy socked feet are taken (Sherry’s a lucky lady).
Oh and the light is centered in the room (and on that doorway and the bed) so the slight left-ish shift that you see above is just thanks to the angle of the shot that I snapped.
So there you have it. The little big slice of “hey now” that we added to our bedroom. It certainly doesn’t make us miss the old fan (which we’re donating to the ReStore) and it never fails to make us giddy. What can I say? Warning: pun coming. It lights my fire. Oh, and we should mention that Clara is crazy fascinated by the flowers themselves. We’d let her get near them if we could trust her not to put one of the paper flowers in a death grip and tear it off towards her mouth. So for now it’s just for looking.
Do any of you own Mr Maskros yourselves? Or are there any other dramatic and large-scaled light fixtures that you’re into lately?
Psst- There have been a few requests for more photos from other angles, so here they are:
Clara likey.
Update: Things definitely take some time to shake out around here. So if you wanna see how Ed the Bed and our new light evolved, click here and here. Ah tweaks. Gotta love ’em!

oops! nevermind-I see the post above & your response. I’m really interested to hear how this works out because that lamp is beautiful!
erica says
Hmm..i like it, but isn’t it rather odd when John stands there and he’s eye level to it? At least it appears so in the last photo. I can see that happening in a dining room where the lighting is positioned lower because you’re seated, but in a bedroom? In the center? He’s gonna be playing duck duck goose with it!
YoungHouseLove says
See how John’s standing with his leg against the bench? That pic was to show that while the lamp definitely could be walked into by both of us if it wasn’t hanging over anything, since it’s hanging over the bench you’d literally have to walk through the bench to hit your head on it. It’s just not in our path since we walk around the bed and around the bench, so there’s not really a head-hitting issue. Sort of like how hanging it over a dining room table would keep people from knocking into it. Hope it helps!

Wow!! You guys are amazing!!!! Love, love, LOVE that light, and love you guys, precious Clara, adorable Burger, and your SWEET blog! Is it weird that when you mentioned wanting a new light for your room earlier this week that I thought, “Hmmm, I wonder if they’d use the IKEA Maskros?” ????!!!!
YoungHouseLove says
That’s so funny! You’re not the first one to pin that light on us, which is so funny because here we are thinking we’re doing something “crazy” and a lot of you guys are saying it’s so “us.” Love it!

I like the looks of this lamp and think it would be fantastic if your ceilings were several feet higher. It just hangs sooo low. I think it could be a real issue when your kids get a bit older. I can see my youngest now doing a Tarzan imitation on it!
Kris says
Oh man! What a great lamp! You didn’t even mention the fact that it totally reflects itself in your vanity mirror which totally reflects even more light! Awesome!
Par says
Love the lamp – however, i feel it will look lovely at the corner of your living room (where Karl is) above the table (you do have a vintage pendant hanging there presently.. Maskros will look lovely hanging there in a corner (Since it is big it has a nice impact hanging in the corner)… The bedroom can do with a beautiful largish Sunburst mirror on the wall perhaps and a nice lamp fixture that doesn’t hang… i think it takes up a lot of eye room in this bedroom!
IMHO
Mara says
Here in Sweden EVERYONE has this lamp and I never really understood why as it always looked like just a little bit too much to me. Now that I see it in this space, though, I totally get that it needs to be part of some other botanical theme, which you don’t see much of over here and which is why, I think, it never made sense to me before. Anyway, it looks perfect and you’ve made me a convert.

Oh, I love that light. Ikea Netherlands sells it too!
I once read a story about what inspired the designer making this light. The dandelion! So before you go to sleep, make a wish, blow your dandelion and your wish will surely happen.

Ha! I remember buying this over a year ago when it FIRST CAME OUT (the larger version) and it was only available in a few stores nationwide. I even posted pics on your facebook page.
FYI – You can totally change the shadows with the type of bulb. One of the blue-ish soft white bulbs sends a fuzzy, abstract shadow. The regular bulbs send a very crisp clear flower design. It looks like spiders and scares my kids. Hahaha. I like the crisp clear shadows better. My family won the vote 5 to 1, and we have the fuzzy shadows.

Oooooh, I love that light! We would have one in our living room but we’ve got EVEN LOWER ceilings than you (7ft 3″) so I don’t think that’ll happen… Next house maybe… *dreamy sigh*
You probably know this already but ‘Maskros’ is Swedish for Dandylion, and that alone makes me smile!
Thanks for ANOTHER lovely post! :)

We just learned the whole Maskros = Dandelion thing yesterday afternoon – and it made us love the light even more! So sweet.

I love the colors that you are using in your rooms. It may be the angle that the pics were shot but the bed frame seems to compete with your new light. It’s possible the light would show better if the frame wasn’t there. Also, someone made a comment about the dark bench — a temporary fix might be to slipcover it. I enjoy reading your blog!
Randa says
I love the after pics… So much nicer than the before picture, even I was loving your bedroom as it was before even reading this post :)
What’s funny is that I am currently in Germany, and just yesterday – probably while you were writing this post! – I was in a really nice mall in Essen and they had tons of those same Ikea fixtures hanging in this really nice sitting area… I was totally admiring them! That mall is really big with high ceilings, so I’m guessing that they are probably the larger-scale fixtures. They look so great in that space. So different and yes maybe kinda “wild” but I think they are fabulous.
LuLu says
Hmmmm. Maybe I need to see the room completed but for now I just don’t think it works in that space.

Wow, I certainly love how it looks, but won’t cleaning/dusting it be a pain? That is always factored into my light fixture purchases, dorky but practical! :)
YoungHouseLove says
Haha we worried about that too, but we’ve heard from a few owners (some who have had it over a year) that you can easily dust it with a feather duster, so that’s our plan. We’ll share all the cleaning details as we go!

This post was hilarious! Thanks for the laughs, as well as the amazing design. I love your work!!!
Jo says
It’s a super cool light, but agree with a lot of people here, the dimensions/placement of it are off. It hangs too low and competes with Ed, that space kind of calls for a flush mount fixture.
YoungHouseLove says
Except the thought of a flush mount fixture doesn’t make us giddy. We know it’s a polarizing choice but we love it! And we figure since we’re the ones sleeping under it that’s what matters. We’re huge believers in making your house feel like yours by bringing in what you love (which isn’t something the world at large will always agree on – but that’s the beauty of personal preference!).

I visited an office in Sweden that used these in their small-ish cafeteria. The walls were bright orange, the floor was a medium hardwood, and they had 3 brushed stainless steel tables with a lamp hanging as a chandelier over each. Along with a big window on one end and bright green accents, it was by far one of my favorite office environments ever. I especially loved the shadows these lamps created, and the bowls of (Swedish) candy helped as well. Too fun!
I love that you brought such a big piece into your bedroom, and I agree that leaving them white was the way to go.
Tori says
Sigh, if only we had a/c in the cottage. I’d toss all the ceiling fans and have cool chandelier type lights all over the place.
This reminds me that I need to put lower watt bulbs in the ceiling fans, they are way to harsh with the higher wattage.

Love this light! I was walking through the mall a couple of weeks ago and one of the nail salons had these same pendant lights. They had the large one and smaller one. I had to stop and take a gander, but unfortunatley the store wasn’t open yet that day so I couldn’t get a good look, but I thought WOW! Can you post a picture with just the pendant light on so I can see how much light it gives off?
YoungHouseLove says
A picture might not demonstrate how much light it puts out since the camera tends to skew things like that, but one thing about the light it puts off (which many smart commenters mentioned – thanks guys!) is that you can make it a lot brighter by changing out the bulb for a CFL (aka: a compact florescent bulb) which burns brighter by using super low wattages. You could probably get the equivalent of a 200 watt fixture with a CFL that actually puts out under 40 watts! Hope it helps!

Erika says
This looks pretty cool! We tried the large one in our dining room and after about a month we decided we would try the smaller version. Unfortunately when we got to IKEA we realized it would not have been large enough. We love that light, though. Here is our post about playing around with it:

I agree with many of the commenters who commend you on your graciousness in replying to comments…but I have to say, even the commenters who aren’t digging some of the things you’ve done in your new house have been incredibly gracious as well! Most of the comments are to the effect of, “I love your blog, but [insert projct here] isn’t my cup of tea. I look forward to what you do next” — which is great to see! I’m sure you have readers who would swoon even if you covered every surface of your home in pea-green burlap, but I think it’s great that so many of your readers aren’t afriad to give their honest opinion, and do so politely and constructively.
Totally just out of curiousity–how many fans have you guys removed in both of your houses? You say you are “fan-fans”, but boy, they seem to come down faster than Janet Jackson’s wardrobe in a Superbowl halftime show! ;-)
YoungHouseLove says
Amen! We’re so thankful for our readers who are all usually extremely kind in thier opinions, whatever they may be! Which is great because we really want this to be a positive and encouraging place that’s nice and drama-free. Even if people don’t agree with our choices (long live personal preference!). Haha.
As for ceiling fans, old brick ranchers here in VA are famous for having them everywhere, especially since they usually predate the central air units that were later added. Our last house probably had 6 fans and we kept 2 (and added three table fans) and this one had 8 and we have removed 4 so far (and brought our table fans with us). Since ranchers are also notorious for low ceilings, sometimes they just feel heavy now that central air is in play!

Hmmm… I love that lamp and would love to find a place for it in my house, but I’m not sure I like how it’s sitting in yours. It’s too low and the proximity to the end of the bed frame is just weird. Maybe if it was right up at ceiling level or your had higher ceilings I’d like itmore. But hey, as someone else said decor is highly personal and lord knows you’ve got a better eye than me so don’t take any notice of my opinion!
Bec says
Love the lamp. Just a thought – can you remove the cross bar from Ed the bed without destabilising the whole thing? The cross bar going across the width of the bed near the beautiful new lamp? I wonder if this would avoid, “Hey new lamp, you’re hanging in my space, man,” type of issues… (Imagine Ed’s voice as Keanu Reeves in Bill and Ted.)

Haha, yup that top rail can easily be removed down the line. For now we’re happy to let Maskros & Ed get to know each other though. Haha.

sorry guys, the scale is way off–it is way to big for the room. Better off with a drum shade or other cool close-to-ceiling fixture. Lampsplus.com has amazing ones that you can custom design based on your color scheme. Everything else looks great, though.

FUN!!!
I have seen that light fixture in Ikea so many times and always been drawn to it. I am glad I saw it in your room before I gave into temptation though. It looks BEAUTIFUL… but we have two cats. And I can just imagine the unholy glee that would light their little faces when they saw it floating above them, swaying gently.
We’d have to take bets on how long it would last before we came home to find shreds of mauled flowerets all over the house.
It really looks gorgeous in your space. And I like how it echoes the mobile in your daughter’s room. Kinda like the grown up version and the baby version. :)

I have been scoping out that pendant at IKEA for months! It has a romantic, yet modern feel, which is perfect for a Master Bedroom. Great addition to the space! :)
vanessa says
Yes, we have one in our office AKA the ikea tribute room or as far as our electrician is concerned after he installed it, the night club room.
I’m getting used to the MASKROS-I have the larger 55cm version- the room isn’t big- 3.5m X 3.4 but the ceilings are very high- I think it needs a bigger room, as I’m not sure about the maskros shadows on the walls- kind of looks like spiders.
Now to convince my husband, that a monkeyboys replica pendant can be justified!!
vanessa says
thanks for the CFL hint!!
YoungHouseLove says
Sure! Good luck!

vanessa says
Thanks Sherry and the lady who commented prior about the type of globe hint for shadows (sorry didn’t read all the posts) I went to the lighting store and switched the 40w clear halogen for a 60w CFL in cool white- the difference when lit is fabulous- the shadows are softer and the room brighter, so I’m a lot happier with the MASKROS.
Now to pick whether the globe should be cool or soft white- beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder and it makes a lot of difference to work in a place that you like.
YoungHouseLove says

I was just looking at this pendant on Sunday at Ikea! I was afraid it would interfere with the art work on our bedroom wall. I really like it, but didn’t want it to compete or hide our awesome new piece of art. That sucker is huge! I was trying to convince our older daughter to put it in her bedroom, but she was eying Kristaller http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20089464 she is feady to work on her room but first has to pick paint before we can proceed!
Question for you, we have 2 light fixtures in our bedroom. One directly over the bed the other is near the doorway/nook. I have yet to decide what to do with that space. Might end up with a desk there someday or just a sitting area, who knows? I like the idea of an understated barely noticeable fixture in that area & something more dramatic over out bed. I think it would look weird if I had 2 of the same fixtures. What do you think?
YoungHouseLove says
Nope, your instincts are perfect. That’s what I was going to recommend as you told me the layout. You’ll be amazed how easy it is to tie two fixtures together (just brushed nickel hardware can tie something flush mounted into a big ornate chandelier or drum shade with the same material). Good luck!

i have a lighting question for you … i decided to come back to this post to check out your light again to see how it’s connected to the ceiling.
i’m seriously considering ordering this pendant light to hang above my dining room table(checked the website from your sponsor list!)
http://www.shadesoflight.com/carnival-wonderland-drum-shade_pendant-2-colors.html
my biggest concern was that the (not sure what you call it) but the white wire that hangs it would look to cheapy looking and i noticed that it’s very similar to what you have on this light. do you think that it’s not “formal” enough for a dining room (i don’t think my dining room is super formal though i just got those green apple polka dot parson chairs from target that everyone is talking about).
what do you think?
YoungHouseLove says
We’ve seen the exact fixture in tons of designer dining rooms and it looks pretty darn awesome. It was just in Traditional Living this Feb (learned this after we got it thanks to a reader sending us the link) so I think it’s universally acceptable to use in a dining room (haha) and the wire’s definitely not too cheap looking. Hope it helps!

sorry to keep bothering you – can you give me the link where you see the shade in the dining room – i looked at feb traditional living and i didn’t see it (did see your bedroom one though ;)
YoungHouseLove says
So sorry- my response was confusing. When I said we saw “that fixture” in Traditional Living I was talking about our Ikea light, but since it has the same cord I meant that since they endorsed a light with the same cord that that type of cord must be a-ok for a dining room – even according to the pros. In fact we had a drum pendant light with the same type of cord in our dining room at our first house (from CB2) and it looked great. The buyers of our home even specified that they wanted to make sure that fixture stayed with the house (we left all of them except for Clara’s light because we were too sentimental about that one- haha).

I am totally showing myself as the blog stalker that I am by leaving this comment but I couldn’t help but notice that your new light bears some resemblance to a post you did on June 23, 2010 (I was reading some of your old posts and it came up, I don’t have that good of a memory) called What’s The One Thing…where you said you really wanted a certain capiz chandelier but it cost $399 and you were lusting over it. I like the lamp and the look of your room, but it doesn’t work for me on a “flow” level because it’s
a) hanging so low. I could see it working over a dining-room table, but not in the middle of a room where I would have to walk around it (mind you it’s above the ottoman, so you have to walk around that anyway). Plus it feels like it makes a very obvious “ball of light” in the middle of the space.
b) so close to the bed frame. it just feels kinda busy and odd.
that being said, it’s hard to get a really good feel from pictures, and seeing it in real probably creates a different feling. In any case, I admire the fact that you guys try out things and find original solutions that work for you, and don’t stick to conventionnal set ups…

I KNEW IT!!!! I KNEW IT! When you said something about it being a little crazy in the before, I just knew. I thought, “They are going to get that IKEA flower chandy.” I really did. Now my hubby thinks I am totally weird.
Dee says
You guys are great, but I’m really not feeling how the master is coming together. One of the main problems is the canopy bed. It looks too small and spindly in your room and really cuts into the space awkwardly. The small lamps are pretty but rather lackluster and do nothing for scale. The green curtains are increasingly looking quite drab, and darn it all … I really want to love them!!! But the biggest problem is that gaping exposed vanity and window with the very disruptive hanging mirror. The flow of energy in this room is becoming problematic. However, the colors are fabulous and fresh and crisp. Maybe someday consider a solid and more substantial bed minus the canopy. It’s really going to limit your design and become a nuisance as the newness begins to wear off.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Dee,
One tiny reminder for ya. We only moved here two months ago! So everything about that room is in progress (there’s no art on the walls, we’re on the hunt for an 8 x 10′ rug, we’re going to refurbish an antique dresser to replace the old reddish one in the corner, we have major plans to makeover the sink vanity and add balance to it, etc). We’d actually be disappointed if we tossed a “finished” room together in ten weeks because we love taking our time, watching a space evolve, and tackling things one project at a time. Our first house definitely looked straight up crazy after two months of living there (it took us 4.5 years to get it “done”) so we’re definitely in it for the journey and not the destination! Hope that makes sense.

Oh Ikea, I can never go in there without leaving with something amazing…and sometimes too big! You are so right that the showroom underminds us every time! BUT the light fixture looks awesome, your bedroom is just the right blend of relaxing and rejuvenating + a spash of whimsy!
We have been eyeing that lamp fixture for awhile now, thank you for showing the assembly (that’s what I was nervous about) and spraying it a new fun color is a great idea!
Picture lightbulb above head…clicked ON! Thanks for the continued inspiration:)

Love this light! I have been eyeing this baby for a long time too. Just don’t have a place for it. Honestly we are about to build a house and I just might have to build an extra space so I can fit it in;) Great choice for your room!

Awesome!!!
About the 40W bulb…something I did in our kitchen fixture was to install compact fluorescent bulbs that use less watts than the fixture is rated for but produce more light.

Love that trick! We might give it a try if we want more light for sure!

I have this light!! But I got it the day they brought it to the showroom at the Ikea in Dallas and they only had the huge one! Oh how I wish I would have waited and purchased the smaller one! I love it its just huge and even having the cord as short as possible without it hitting the ceiling, it still hangs down super low!!
