When we heard from the editors of this up and coming online mag that’s geared towards living it up in style in the south (think Lonny meets Southern Living) we couldn’t wait to see the premier issue. And when they actually explained that they wanted us to BE in the premier issue… well, let’s just say lots of dorky high-fiving ensued.
They went on to tell us that Southern Flourish will have a reoccurring column called “Our Favorite Room” and they wanted us to introduce that feature by dishing about which room in our house is our absolute fave and why. How did they know that’s totally our idea of a good time? Seriously, we had so much fun contributing to the inaugural issue and we love the entire finished product (we clicked through it voraciously from cover to cover).
You can read our article which is embedded below (just click the little arrow on the right to turn the page, and click on the mag to enlarge it):
We definitely love their goal to keep things fresh and young and fun (which aren’t always words that people associate with the good ol’ south) and we can’t wait to see how their mag grows and, well, flourishes.
So we’re sending out a giant virtual thank you to everyone over at Southern Flourish for the amazing opportunity to be a part of their very first issue. And it’s only going to get better (they plan to add more links to things right in the copy, so you can see the price and even purchase more items that you like as you flip through). With lots of great printed publications disappearing left and right it’s always encouraging to see online content popping up. Plus they’re gloriously and amazingly F-R-E-E! Which makes them candy for a magazine loving girl like me. Seriously, I can pop them like M&Ms.
Oh and while we’re on the subject of our favorite room, we’d love to hear what space in your home is your fave. Is it your bedroom because it’s so peaceful and clutter free? Your kitchen because it’s where everyone gathers? Your family room because it’s casual and cozy? Spill it.

Ohhh, can’t wait to read it!
I went to Home Depot today to pick up a gallon of Water Chestnut for our living room AND THEY WERE OUT! It was pretty funny though, as I think the colors y’all painted your house seem to be *the* colors to use right now. No lie, google any color in your house & you’ll find a few blogs about how they got it from YHL.
Thankfully, my paint buying expedition ending well as there seem to be Home Depots every 20ft here in Austin & I was able to pop into a nearby store & get a gallon there.
Will post a blog update soon. Wee Apartment is going by the alias Honkin’ Mess right now. Redecorating is *so* fun! ;-)

That’s too funny Heidi! So glad you were able to track down the paint! And good luck with your impending room makeover!

Congrats guys! This is a serious honor. I’m excited that another virtual shelter mag has popped up — I think it’s the future! Can’t wait to dive into this one.
Oh and as for my favorite room…I suppose it’s my living room. Still very much a work in progress, but I’m excited to see where it’s going!

Love the feature! Online magazines are are great – all the eye candy without the clutter.
My current favorite room is our living room. It is the place that we spend the most time, and that I have put the most work into. I just feels warm, cozy, and like home!

Why is hubby always looking at the dog in your photo shoots for mags? Just curious if there’s a crazy story behind it! :)
Thanks for your site LOVE it!
YoungHouseLove says
It all started back with our photoshoot for the cover of The Nest magazine when they refused to ever let the hubbys look at the camera (if you look at every issue, the guy is staring at the wife or the dog but never at the lens). We always thought that was so funny, so whenever we have to stage a photoshoot we have a little inside joke that John isn’t allowed to look at the camera. Of course he is (and we snap some pics of that too) but we always tend to like the photos where he isn’t- maybe because it’s our own little inside joke.

Major congrats! I never know where I’m going to see you next! Last week you popped up on my DIY magazine email, now here. Tell me, when you started this whole blogging and renovating thing, did you have any idea it would be this successful? Couldn’t happen to a more deserving pair, er trio – bravo!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Lesley! You’re making us blush over here. And to answer your question we had NO IDEA that our blog would ever blossom like it has. John actually wanted to start this blog to document our home makeover for family and friends and I was opposed to the idea because I just didn’t get it. Isn’t that funny? I was anti blog! But of course when we started we both loved sharing our adventures and we were totally surprised when people other than our friends and family started dropping in. We still can’t believe how lucky we have been to come this far and we feel so fortunate to get to do what we love every single day.

Hi Sherry, I love the magazine. I sent them an e-mail just to rave about it. I have been a lurker for a while and went back a while ago just to read every post. My husband and I bought a house about a year ago and have yet to finish window treatments. I want to imitate your look of the bamboo blinds and curtains but cannot find good bamboo blinds for cheap enough. I looked at both Walmart an Target with no luck. I found some at JC Penney but they are a bit pricier. I am open to wood blinds as well but was just wondering if you had any tips. Thanks so much for all you do. You make decorating a lot easier for a design fearing accountant! :)

Definitely try Lowe’s and Home Depot. Oh and even amazon.com. Hope it helps!

Just wondering if anyone could recommend how to find these free on line magazines. So excited…do you know how much US,mags cost in Australia?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Rose,
For more free online magazines, maybe you can just google around with the term “free online publication” or “free online magazine” or “webzine” and be sure to check out other blogs to see if they’re mentioning urls that you can follow for lots of free eye candy. As for how much US mags cost in Australia, foreign magazines cost about $10-15 here in the US so hopefully that gives you an idea of the markup (since they have to be shipped internationally). Hope it helps!
