We had tons of fun House Crashing Kelly Moore last May (you can see the whole shebang here)…
… so when she told us she had made some outdoor updates, we couldn’t wait to check out this little haven that she created out on her deck.
Complete with outdoor drapes, a hanging egg chair (from Ikea), some colorful seating (from CB2) , and lots and lots of potted plants – it definitely has serious come-hither charm.
We especially loved the leaning pallet planter that she DIYed with hose clamps from the home improvement store.
Some pallets have chemicals in them while others are more naturally sealed (with heat) so they’re less questionable for outdoor crafts like this. And if you’re unsure, you can always use a product like SafeCoat to seal off a pallet (it’s what the pros also use to seal off lead paint). To see more on how Kelly made her palette planter, click here.
The deck leads down to a sitting area with more bold seating, a chiminea, and a fire pit. You can see a closer shot of that area here.
And in almost every corner there are pretty little potted plants, like this sweet little succulent.
We love that not only did Kelly use plant pots for her greenery, she also used a few unexpected items, like this old metal toolbox. It definitely adds some soul and personality to the mix.
You can check out more of the outdoor details on Kelly’s blog. And a big thanks to her for sharing the update with us – we love seeing even more nooks and crannies of Kelly’s gorgeous house!
***Speaking of gorgeous houses, we’re on the lookout for awesome houses to crash in the Atlanta, Georgia area (or in the areas between there and Richmond – like Charlotte NC, Greenville SC, Greensboro NC, etc) since we’re headed out that way for the Haven Conference next week. We’ll also be traveling to Bethany Beach Delaware later this summer, so if you have a crash-worthy home in that area – or even in Virginia Beach, Virginia’s eastern shore, or Annapolis Maryland – we’d love to check it out! To submit your casa, just drop an email with some house photos and your location (just a general region, we don’t need your address yet) to [email protected] and we’ll do our best to figure something out (can’t promise we can hit every home that’s submitted, but we’ll do our darndest to squeeze in as much house-crashing fun as we can!).
But back to Kelly’s outdoor oasis. Let’s play the favorite part game. I’m dying over the egg chair and can’t believe I missed it whenever it was sold at Ikea (it’s not there anymore, boo hoo). Meanwhile John is loving the tool box planter. Oh and you can check out every house we’ve crashed here, and a few houses that we’ve re-crashed for update posts here and here.

The play set! Oh how fun to see a play set in the yard but keep such an adult feel. I love the fence & I’m not a huge fan of fenced in yards. I’d love to have a drink on that back deck!

Oh, I love her house! The cow painting in her dining room is to die for! Now you’ve got me wanting to live in her backyard, too… Great crash you guys!

Love the pallet planter!

My favorite is a tie between the nature in her backyard, the pallet planter and those color-popping chairs!

I love your blog! My husband and I just bought our first home a bit over a week ago and it is overwhelming and elating at the same time! Although both of your homes had/have beautiful curb appeal, I was wondering if you had any advice about dressing up a house with ordinary side paneling. We consider our home paradise minus the view from the road (although we have plenty of work to do!). Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for all the inspiration!
YoungHouseLove says
Hmm, anyone have advice for Laura? Can you update things with paint? Or add window boxes or a pergola or some other sort of architecture to dress things up? Even just mulching and planting some shrubs and flowers can update curb appeal! Hope it helps!

We aren’t too keen on our house’s siding either but we can’t replace it (nor are we up for painting it) so we dress it up with lots of planters with annuals, painted the front door, planted some annuals around the front landscaping and mulched – these all did a lot (in addition to mowing and weed eating regularly). We also embraced the color of the house and incorporated it into the color scheme. Good luck with the new place!

Y’all are welcome to come crash our house in Greenville, S.C. We live in the historic North Main area. Our house is a 1940’s bungalow that we have been fixing up for only a year. It still has a long way to go, but we’d love to see y’all!

Aw thanks Allison, you’re so sweet!

Sherry, I saw an identical hanging egg chair at Pier 1 the other day. I don’t remember the price, but they could be twins.

I love her house and the outdoor space she created is awesome! So excited to see your shout out for more houses to crash – something to look forward to :)

Thanks for mentioning the thing about chemically treated pallets — I always worry when I see pallet DIY’s inside the house, like the reclaimed pallet wood ceiling a couple weeks ago. Making sure you choose the right wood, or treat it properly is so important and many people don’t know!

I wish I was going to the conference so badly! I almost stayed living in NC a few extra months so I could drive down. Have fun, can’t wait to hear all about it!
Her house is beautiful- I love the toolbox for the plants and the pallet planter- great ideas!
Maybe someday if you are ever in Maine and I ever have a house you can crash us… I will be sure to have a ceramic animal or two for you :)
Travel safe!

Haha, sounds fun! We’d love to get up there someday!

What a beautiful home and lovely backyard. I love how those potted plants are displayed, what a great idea and it also saves space. This reminds me I also want to plant some succulents this year to keep on my porch and in my kitchen.

I don’t know when it’ll be done, but when my MBR reno is completed, I’m inviting y’all for a crash.

We JUST bought a house and we’re saving our pennies to update it over time, but rest assured your blog is our go-to for ideas and tutorials. You guys will just have to come back to ATL some time in the next decade and check it out…haha.
Instead, I’ll give you a tip should you want to go shopping/rummaging. It’s a flea market called My Favorite Place (aptly named) about 20 minutes north of downtown. A great place to find treasures if you’re willing to dig a bit. It’s all in the timing – since they mostly buy estates, but at the right time you can really hit the jackpot! 5596 Peachtree Industrial Blvd, Chamblee, GA.

John and Sherry,
I LOVE you blog and house crashing. My husband and I recently moved our family (1 four year old and twin 2 year olds) into house with more space. We love the space of the house and the location. We’re even growing to love the woodwork. Problem is, all of the trim, built ins, cupboards, and doors are oak. I dont love oak, but am hesitant to change it for two reasons. 1. It was done so well here and it is beautiful (for oak). 2. There is a lot of it. I would love to see some house crashing with homes that have oak woodwork. I want to make it open and fresh, but it looks so much easier to do that with white woodwork.
Thanks so much! You guys have such great ideas!
YoungHouseLove says
We are always keeping an eye out for oak trim to share! Will definitely spill those pics whenever we can!
