Something about filming the video tour of our showhouse progress made us realize that we were overdue for one of our own house (that and the fact that so many of you have been asking for one). And considering the last one we made was the “before” of this house, overdue is actually an understatement. So please forgive our delay and enjoy this little jaunt around our very much in-progress pad:
In the video you might notice a few things…
- There are several “disaster zones” in the house (the dining room, the guest room, and the unfinished storage room) which are basically a catch-all dumping ground for things that we haven’t figured out a place for yet – so we kept those real and showed you the chaos.
- We also take a moment to highlight the bins full of baby girl clothes in the living room that Sherry’s going to consign/donate. Why do we always point out the most random things when the camera’s rolling?
- There’s a sneak peek of our bathroom ceiling, which is halfway done.
- I filmed while Sherry narrated, since we’ve learned that Sherry’s a bit too Blair Witch Project with her camera skills, and I’m not as good at chatting without long awkward pauses.
- Sherry now wants me to add that there’s nothing not-awkward about her narration. I like her last sentence the best.
- Please forgive the couple of obvious cuts – like when I trekked down a long dark hallway towards our laundry, or when I spun around and smacked the camera into our closet wall and may have muttered something unsavory.
- Burger makes a cameo and totally plays it cool (“don’t mind me, I’ll just keep eating.”)
And if you’re interested in making a direct comparison, here’s our original house tour video from waaaay back in May – which was before we had even moved in.
Do you guys ever walk around with a video camera (or just a regular camera) to “time capsule” your progress? It’s such an easy thing to put off doing (and it definitely feels weird while you’re doing it), but it’s kind of awesome to have them to look back on.
Psst- You can check out the video tours of our first house here, here, here, here and here – and the video tours of our second house here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.

Weird question. When you guys are finished painting.. what do you use to clean your brushes and where do you clean them? Do you take them outside? Use the kitchen sink? Utility sink? Also, do you ever clean your rollers? Or do you just throw those away and opt for new ones? Thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
We typically use the kitchen sink since we use low/no VOC paints (water based) and just rinse them with water (brushes and rollers). We only use mineral spirits and save them in a container and get rid of them at a recycling center nearby when we do oil-based paint, but that’s not often these days.

Have you decided not to do the Friday forum links anymore? Just curious. :)

We’re sort of intermittent on those but love to do them whenever we have time to compile them! I think we had them last week, and hope to have some next week!

So I noticed you skipped the front hall closets… Would have liked to have revisited how the organization you did in the small one by the door is working or not for you.
….Then there is that ‘other one’ which you have never shown, in my mind it is your Monica Closet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apvf4UihPd8… Come on! Tell us, is it???
YoungHouseLove says
Haha! The one near the kitchen has shoes and coats and the front one is full of Clara’s toys. Neither are secretly full of craziness (we save full rooms for that- haha!) but we usually just do rooms for video tours, so we didn’t even think to include any closets (we didn’t do Clara’s closet or linen closets or the nursery one either). Would be fun to do a post (or series) all about closet org though!

Hi! I have to say I had no idea you even had a storage room off of the washroom or that it was so huge! I’m not sure if you have talked about it in previous posts or not but have you considered turning it into another bedroom or living space down the road?
YoungHouseLove says
Yes, we’d love to make a giant TV room/bunkroom for older kiddos down the line. We picture lots of sleepovers back there.

Loved the tour! So much done in such a short amount of time. This is definitely a “forever” house. Love all the windows, French doors, and natural light. The white woodwork, the colors you’ve chosen are all spot on for the spaces. Amazing progress!!

Thanks Sherri!

Awww! Going through all the baby clothes is so bittersweet. I did my first consignment sale a few months ago. I still ended up with a bin of clothes that I wanted to keep. My husband thinks I’m a little crazy…but I just can’t part with my favorite little outfits!
YoungHouseLove says
Yes, it’s making me all sniffly! They grow up too fast!

I’m 99% certain I spotted the Ikea fjell dresser being assembled in the nursery….yes?
I’ve been eying it for my master but wanted to see it stained or painted in someone else’s space first. Did you know that there is not a single google result of someone painting or staining it yet?! Nope…not one.
I’m curious to see if you’ll pioneer that or keep it as is:)

I think this is the first video house tour I’ve watched and wow! your storage room! I didn’t even know it existed, and it is like half the size of our Geneva apartment! Wow! :)
YoungHouseLove says
It’s huge right! It’s the area over our double garage, so it’s big and completely raw (no walls or proper flooring, etc).

Wow— you guys have, “crap-zones,” too??? Suddenly I feel so much better about myself. (hee hee!) I see how you guys turn your houses around so quickly that I admit that I have this vision of the two of you with “house halos” around your heads!!
BTW, besides designing the benefit show house, have you thought about helping Habitat for Humanity by tweaking their house plans with little changes to make them better? I ask because a HfH house went up near my parents’, and my mom observed several inexpensive or no-cost changes that would have made the house work a lot better for the single mom who lived there.
YoungHouseLove says
That would be really cool! I love that idea!

Is it technically feasible to make a split-screen video of a tour of the before and after videos to see the differences? Naturally, you’d have to match what you did in the before video, since time travel probably is not in your budget.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh man, that would be awesome, but I’m not sure we can make that work logistically (the route we took and the time we took it in would have to be constant to do a side-by-side and it varied).

Hi! Loved the video tour! Love your transformations! I want to know what happened to that ultra-cute pink rug that was in Clara’s room? I must have missed the day you blogged about going from pink to blue in her room? It’s really sweet anyway – I do like blue for girls – but I’m surprised you didn’t leave the pink for Clara and just use the blue rug for the bun. Maybe too predictable? Okay – next thing (sorry!). I am redecorating my bedroom. Just installed industrial type reading sconces and I kind of hate them. Wish I had stuck with lamps because the lights is so much nicer. UGH. Anyway. I bought a mid-century modern dresser and nightstands from Craigslist. The dresser is similar to yours and I have a smallish white TV on top. I do NOT know how to style the top of the dresser at all. I’m wondering about putting the DVR thing in the top drawer.. then… could you snuggle the screen between of stacks of books or something to make it less noticeable? Hurry and do yours so I can imitate you! Ha ha. Have a great weekend!
YoungHouseLove says
Sadly that pink rug was super sheddy and it was getting a bunch of pink fur all over the second floor (tumbleweeds were even showing up in our bedroom!) so we’re not sure why it’s degrading like that but it’s just not functional for us anymore. It’s funny because we have never had an issue with wool rugs before, but that one’s just losing his hair for some reason. And as for the dresser, we’ll have to hurry up and do ours for ya! Haha!

I love it when bloggers don’t clean for house tours! It makes me feel better about the fact that 2 out of our 3 bedrooms are a mess right now. haha It also makes you more relatable. :) It’s looking good! Is it weird that the thing I’m most jealous of is that big storage area? The longer we live here the more I realize how much our house stinks in terms of storage space (will def be high on the list in the next house!).
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yeah, I keep saying every room would be a tornado without that! And even with that space we have the dining room and the guest room looking crazy!

I’m not much of a regular commenter (I’m male, so maybe that’s part of it!) But I wanted to say that I really enjoyed seeing a DIY video that was just like what everyone else could do in their own home! So much of what you do is so polished and professional – with all of your pictures framed just right, with the right lighting, etc. It was fun to take a look at the house from a regular living-it-it perspective, recognizing you guys have rooms just like the rest of us – with junk in them. Also, the walk through is nice because it let’s us get a real sense for how the house we’re all watching is actually put together.
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks Fred!

The house is looking great! I confess, I was sad when you first posted you were moving – I wasn’t sold on the new house because I’d loved the layout and what you had done with the previous house so much – but it’s beginning to win me over!
Quick question – what is the door underneath the staircase? I know you don’t have a basement… so just another closet?
YoungHouseLove says
That’s a coat closet with shoes and stuff in it. No basement here, but it’s a nice deep closet!

Sorry if this question has already been asked, but the regarding the storage area upstairs…does that have the potential to be turned into another bedroom if you wanted one? Just curious cause it looked so big.
Thanks for sharing your house and ideas with us!

Yes, it’s big! We think we’d love to turn it into a TV room/bunk-room for older kiddos to have sleepovers and hang out.

Great progress and a great project. I myself had a few ‘ dumping grounds” during my small office renovation. once it became too much, i looked into bringing that stuff to storage, but found that companies can bring a storage unit to you. Needless to say, this option allowed me to keep my things out of the way, but close by for when the room was finished. might work for you and your next project, but only if it’s in your budget. I used these guys and will use them for next time
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks for the tip!

Jessica says
Just curious, you might have said this in one of your posts – but do you have a basement?
YoungHouseLove says
No basement here (just crawl space under the house). We had a small separate entry basement in our first and second house, but only under the small additions that had been added, so under original old houses around here a basement seems to be rare (most homes are crawl I think).

Actually making a video of your house interior/exterior is a good thing for your insurance policy. My agent suggested it to me, instead of doing a inventory update.
If you ever have a house fire/burglary (knock wood) or storm damage you have a record of your home and possessions as they were. Plus it is easy and quick. Just have to remember to update it every few years or when improvements are made.
YoungHouseLove says
Love that tip!

Love these house tours! Is that a linen closet in your master bathroom nook?

Yes, there’s a bigger one in the hallway and a smaller one right between the sink nook and the bathroom.

Now I finally get how the storage room is connected to the house! I tought it was some kind of attic and you had a pull-out ladder in the ceiling or something. I remember thinking, when you mentioned it might become a bunk room, how are the kids ever gonna get up there? ;)
Looks awesome guys, you really did a lot allready! I’m very exited to see what you are going to do next. So far I really like where you are going, a lot more mature than the last house but still happy and with pops of colour. Keep up the good work! ;)

I wish I had done a video tour of my house when I first moved in. I think it would be interesting to see how it’s changed plus I’d like to go back and see what I wanted to change and what I’ve learned to live with so much that I just don’t see it anymore.
A lot of good work guys! You’ve done way more than me and I’ve lived in my house for 7 years!

So I am not sure how much you edit the videos but something that I personally would LOVE is if you could put a little screen shot of the “before” in a corner of the screen for some rooms. Like when you are in the kitchen, hold tight for just a few seconds and have a pic of how it looked first so we can really “oooo” and “ahhh” over the progress. Just a thought! You guys sure have come a long way in a short amount of time! Lookin’ good!

Man, I just love this new house. But more importantly in my daughter’s world, Clara’s room is the best!
In her room there’s a big mouse doll (?) in front of her little table. Would you mind spilling where you got it? My daughter practically snapped my laptop’s monitor off pointing at it and yelling “Me!” (That’s her word for I Want It Now, K Thanks.”
So I’m thinking she wants one, lol.

That’s so funny! I found that at an estate sale up the street for $5, but I think it’s some sort of Sri Lankan company (maybe search mouse sri lanka)?

You have brightened up the house so much. I love the fresh looks you give things. Have you purposefully tried to not say how horrific the house was and how much you hate some of the colors and stuff? You seem to be very polite about things, whereas I would be making fun of things and ripping on how ugly things were. Whatever it is, I think you two are a polite and I’m very impressed.
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, thanks Julie! The previous owners hadn’t lived here for a while (it was vacant for over a year) but I think we love this house for all the potential it had when we spotted it. So as weird as it sounds, we loved the blue trim and the wallpaper because it showed so much promise, and we couldn’t have afforded this house if it looked all updated, so I think we’re glad we found this diamond in the rough, if that makes sense.

Really random question, but how are you guys liking the whole 2 story house thing? Versus your previous two 1 story houses?
YoungHouseLove says
We love it! Now when people come over we just clean up the main floor and everyone stays down there for the most part, and we also feel like we can “leave work behind” on the first floor, so it’s a nice imaginary division that seems to help us when entertaining or just on day to day work stuff.

The Burger cameo is my favorite, he looks like he’s not sure what he should do. His inner monologue says “just act cool and they’ll go away”!
Sorry for the random question, but do you guys still do the monthly sponsor thanks posts? I remember you used to end it with the coupon codes that are currently active with your sponsors, do you guys have that somewhere else? Itching for something on Wayfair and didn’t know if you had a code.
Hope you have a great weekend!!!

So cute! The house is really looking excellent guys. I can’t believe you’ve been keeping up with this house, decorating a hospital, designing a new build, and growing a baby. Is this nesting, or what you are normally like when not working on a huge behind-the-scenes book project?
But in all seriousness, you guys are amazing. :)

Haha, thanks Hanna! We definitely have had more on our plates than usual but I think it’s so exciting that we’ve been running on adrenaline! I love how much progress you’ve made in such a short amount of time. Puts me to shame. My husband and I bought our house in August and so far I’ve just painted two rooms – the upstairs bedrooms.
