Something about filming the video tour of our showhouse progress made us realize that we were overdue for one of our own house (that and the fact that so many of you have been asking for one). And considering the last one we made was the “before” of this house, overdue is actually an understatement. So please forgive our delay and enjoy this little jaunt around our very much in-progress pad:
In the video you might notice a few things…
- There are several “disaster zones” in the house (the dining room, the guest room, and the unfinished storage room) which are basically a catch-all dumping ground for things that we haven’t figured out a place for yet – so we kept those real and showed you the chaos.
- We also take a moment to highlight the bins full of baby girl clothes in the living room that Sherry’s going to consign/donate. Why do we always point out the most random things when the camera’s rolling?
- There’s a sneak peek of our bathroom ceiling, which is halfway done.
- I filmed while Sherry narrated, since we’ve learned that Sherry’s a bit too Blair Witch Project with her camera skills, and I’m not as good at chatting without long awkward pauses.
- Sherry now wants me to add that there’s nothing not-awkward about her narration. I like her last sentence the best.
- Please forgive the couple of obvious cuts – like when I trekked down a long dark hallway towards our laundry, or when I spun around and smacked the camera into our closet wall and may have muttered something unsavory.
- Burger makes a cameo and totally plays it cool (“don’t mind me, I’ll just keep eating.”)
And if you’re interested in making a direct comparison, here’s our original house tour video from waaaay back in May – which was before we had even moved in.
Do you guys ever walk around with a video camera (or just a regular camera) to “time capsule” your progress? It’s such an easy thing to put off doing (and it definitely feels weird while you’re doing it), but it’s kind of awesome to have them to look back on.
Psst- You can check out the video tours of our first house here, here, here, here and here – and the video tours of our second house here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.

The place is looking great! Even with many so called “disaster areas” — it’s come so far already!
Ashleigh says
Love the tour. I always thought the living room was in the front of the house, where the dining room actually is. the more you know!
ps. love how you pronounce foyer. Canadians say ‘foy- eh’. No jokes – all truth. Eh.
YoungHouseLove says
Haha! Gotta love the “eh!”

Being Canadian, I also noticed that! It made me think of those two fun pronunciation quizzes of yore.

How many square feet is your house? It looks really roomy. I love that extra room in the attic! You could actually have another room one day. I also love how you and John work as a team. My husband won’t do anything around the house, so it can be very frustrating. It’s so much more fun doing it with someone.
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks Susan! This house is around 2500 square feet, which is almost the same exact square footage as our last house (within 50 square feet if you can believe it!).

Hi there! I’ve never commented before but thought I’d throw my 2 cents at y’all! I absolutely loved the built in bookcases in your 2nd house that you painted the deep blue. I just did the same thing in my house and LOVE it.
Every time you post a photo of your new dining room I can’t help but imagine ideas for the space. Something that keeps popping into my head is getting rid of the corner cabinet things and building an entire wall of built ins like your second house but maybe make them not as deep to save space in the room. You could have cabinets underneath for storage and/or do a pseudo hutch for fancy dining room things if you ever had those down the road. Just an idea!
YoungHouseLove says
That would be awesome!

Lots of progress and lots to look forward to…thanks for sharing! Can you remind us of whether you swapped out your hinges when you replaced all of your doorknobs…or did you just spray paint them black? Thank you!

You guys are awesome. My husband and I are moving into a rental house soon and of course there are some areas that we would like to address. Fortunately for us, you guys have faced these obstacles so we can find the solutions all in one place. Oh and Sherry, you are my friend in my head. =)

Aw thanks Amber! Now that we’ve chatted we’re friends in real life… right?

I loved the tour! It wasn’t awkward at all! I am insanely jealous over two things. The separate dining room. And that storage room! So lucky! That is fantastic! Huge extra space! What an amazing library that would be!

you may have answered this important question before….
why does Burger eat his food in your closet? Is it because he does not like to go up and down those steep steps or because he sleeps in there? I expect him to pull an ET photo on Clara’s bed between the stuffed animals!
on another note, I have a little box in the hallway bathroom and sometimes a cat in the sink as a design accessory!
I know you are really busy– did you do a IKEA shopping post of what you liked there or were you too busy throwing baby items and show house items in your cart?!
YoungHouseLove says
It started in our last house because Burger just likes to have his food in a private little nook, along with his crate (we even stuffed a pillow in his crate to make it half the size because he likes to be enclosed like that). He’s a weird boy! I think he likes privacy when he eats, and of course we like to keep Clara (and future baby boy) out of the food and water bowls, so it’s nice to have them tucked in a room that’s out of the way. As for what we found at Ikea, we did snap some really casual photos and hope to share them next week in a nursery update post.

Looks really good guys! I actually really like the small table, chairs, and rug in the office looks like a mini meeting room for you to gather info and ideas with each other.
Sarah says
the house is coming along so great! i love when you do the “dirty” house tours – it’s so comforting to be reminded that no one keeps a perfect house all the time! Now to clean off my coffee table…
Evelina says
I watched the new tour, then the old tour, then the new tour again. So many wonderful changes! Esp in the foyer and kitchen. I have to admit that after spotting Burger, I was hoping for a Clara cameo as well. This was a boys-only video with Sherry’s mirror dodging! Haha! Have a great weekend!
Cheryl says
Wow, you guys have made such great progress! I am head over heels with the blue on your front door.
One question – does the door in the foyer under the stairs lead to a basement or is it another closet? I know you have a coat closet turned toy storage right by the front door. Thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
That’s the coat closet/shoe closet since the one next to the front door is the toy closet :)

GumTreeGirl says
The house looks great even though you have your “Disaster Zones”. I especially love the pointy chandelier in the foyer and Clara’s room seems like so much fun.
An extra thought that is sort of topic. If I heard you right you want to donate Clara’s old clothes. Foster kids often need an entire wardrobe when they come into care and you can usually drop clothes off at your local DCFS (Department and child family services or the equivalent in your state) if you call them or they can tell you who is handling the task of taking in those types of donations in your area. Just an idea incase you are interested and have the time.
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks so much for the tip! I love that idea!

DebbieK says
Weird question, but do you have jobs besides working on the house? (not that working on the house is not a full time job) – just curious.
And I loved the tour. I love the blue door. Never would have thought to paint the inside of a door, but it is an AWESOME color!
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks Debbie! We wear a lot of hats to pay the bills (we’re DIY bloggers, authors, we do speaking gigs, we have a lighting collection, and we take on fun side projects like a showhouse or a hospital waiting room for charity). This started out purely as a hobby that we did after our 9-5 jobs for a few years, and then we took a big leap (and a big pay cut, haha) to try to do the blogging thing full time. Seven years ago when we started this blog we never could have guessed we’d end up here!

Katherine says
The place looks wonderful! We also moved last year- about the same time you guys did. Unfortunately, it looks like we moved in yesterday! I love to see the projects you take on, it’s the kick in the pants I need to get things done here! We’ve borrowed several ideas, so thank you for the inspiration! How often do you envision structural changes vs cosmetic ones? I can’t stop reworking our walls in my head.
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Katherine! I think we mulled over a ton of structural stuff closer to when we moved in, and mulled them to death and now are pretty firm on what we want to do, so it feels like we revisit them sometimes but more often than not we’re revisiting cosmetic changes we can do in the meantime (while we save up money for those bigger changes). But the funny thing is that in our first house it took us years or mulling to figure out the best configuration for our kitchen and which walls to move/widen/etc – so I think some houses are just trickier and less obvious than others.

Oh, no video tours at my house. No, no, no. While the narration would be mildly entertaining (“These piles are things that need to be put away, while these baskets are filled with things that I don’t have room for, and these boxes are things I have had since 1983 that I can’t bear to give up. But enough of the master bedroom!”), the video would look like we had just moved in… and it’s been almost 9 years. When my house looks like your not-tidied house, not only will I film it, blog about it, and shout it from the rooftops, I may buy ad space somewhere and invite the public.
janice says
amazeballs. you are just cranking out the projects!
you sound so semi-out-of-breath Sherry – I kept wanting to say ‘just breeeeeathe’!
cute that Burger has his set up in your closet – does he have food/water anywhere else? Our chi’s have their food in the kitchen…but the sleep in the master bathtub (ok, so a few weeks ago they transitioned to the bathroom floor – in a bed of course) I would love to get their food out of the kitchen but we’re in a rancher and keep the bedroom doors closed to keep the wee ones out of the bedrooms.
YoungHouseLove says
Ah yes, I’m totally out of breath! I get short of breath when I’m pregnant (it’s such a weird side effect – it can happen when I get up and walk ten feet). The funny thing is another prego lady said she’s so out of breath and couldn’t believe I wasn’t in the video, but I totally hear it! Haha! As for the Burger question, it’s only kept in there (he prefers privacy and not having “his stuff” anywhere that Clara can mess with it, so tucked back in the closet is his favorite spot). We don’t close the bedroom door though, so he has easy access all day.

Ack! I’m even more in love with your house now that I’ve “walked” through it. Video gives such a different perspective. I’m loving all of your updates so far and totally agree with doing phase 1 upgrades. My husband and I rent so everything we do is basically a phase 1 update. People don’t understand why we would bother since we won’t reap any benefits when we leave, but if you can do little inexpensive things that make your home more beautiful in the meantime, why not, right? Can’t wait to see more!

This is so awesome!! I’m thinking about doing this too!! I’m so glad that parts of ur house are “under construction”. We have been in ours a little over two years now and we still have a ladder in our living room :)

That’s so sweet Dory! There have been tons of awesome ideas for the clothes on this post so we’ll have to see where we end up (we want to donate some, some are being returned to family who loaned them to us, some are being given to relatives who are pregnant with girls right now, etc).

Jackyy says
How do you keep your hardwood floors from changing color from using area rugs?
YoungHouseLove says
Hmm, I’m not sure. We use a rug pad but I’m not sure you can counteract wood fading in a sunny room over a long time (ex: 10+ years). In our first house there wasn’t any noticeable fading after 4.5 years there with rugs in the same place though.

Can I say, love your home, love what you have done with it, love the blue door. I was thinking that, where you have your laundry room, going into that storage room, you could just make that your laundry room/craft room. Since it’s unfinished, it looks to be a good size, that could be an awesome laundry room and a great place to store things and make projects.
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Erin! It’s a super giant room (as big as a two car garage!!) so we think that would be too big for laundry/crafts for us – but we’d love to finish it to become a TV room/bunkroom for our kiddos when they’re a little older (for watching movies, having sleepovers, etc).

Great tour! Are you sure that’s not the Homes Tour? Ha, ha. But really, someone may have already said this (don’t want to admit I’m too lazy to read through the 258 previous comments), but a friend told me regular video tours of your house are a great way to document your house and belongings in case of a disaster. Hi! Thanks for the tour. I know your entry way is Edgecomb Gray (which I love) but would you mind telling me the kitchen and adjoining room colors? I utilized your link to the BM website which is great but I am having difficulty figuring out the transitions (which you rock). So exciting you’re having a boy–I have 2 little ginger boys, never a dull moment, crazy awesome we call it :)
THANKS!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw, thanks Kara! The kitchen is Nelson Blue and the living room is also Edgecomb Gray (we love it with white trim a lot more, like the foyer, so we can’t wait to paint that). We have yet to paint the dining room or the office, so those are just the old yellowed wall colors (with blue trim) that we inherited :)

Your house is really coming together and looking like a warm, inviting home. Love everything that you’ve done so far. Man…gotta love that storage space! For some reason, I thought it was up a flight of stairs and that the access was somewhere else in the house. What a GREAT space! I can’t wait to see what you do with it. Fabulous teen space, like you mentioned. Boy…lucky ducks!!
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks Julianne! Nearly every other house in our entire neighborhood has that space finished, so at first we thought it was a little unlucky that ours wasn’t finished, but we quickly realized we couldn’t afford the house if it had been, so we’re so grateful it wasn’t finished (it doesn’t count as square footage, so we got a better deal).

I’m in love with your house — it’s so incredibly cozy. You guys have done such a great job.
And as an animal lover I do have to make one comment – I’ve never seen a more awkward food placement set up for a dog before. :\ If you consider pulling out Burger’s food bowls a little so he doesn’t have to hunch and turn his head like that to eat, it might be more comfortable for him. Although chi’s aren’t prone to Bloat, it’s still something to think about.
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks Mel! It’s usually pulled out a bit more but we tucked it under there just for the video tour (so we didn’t walk into it and spill it while we were filming). We had no idea he’d try to eat right at that moment! Haha! He actually loves having his food in the closet though – it started in our last house (he seems to like to eat in private, away from Clara, where she can’t mess with him or his food). He’s a weird little man!

I’m so glad to see this house tour, mostly because I appreciate the unfinished rooms. My husband and I bought our second house around the same time you guys bought your place, and we have been slowly working our magic on some of the outdated rooms. Sometimes I am totally overwhelmed and exhausted by the maroon and navy blue trim that abounds, and I think “how have John and Sherry found the energy to keep going with their blue trim?!” So it makes me feel good to know that you’re still plugging along as well.
