(You’ll get the meaning of that post title in a minute)
Exciting news, guys – we finally found something to take the spot of our too-small pedestal table in the eat-in part of our kitchen.
And we’re happy to report that it’s a lot more proportionate – and functional! – for the space. Now we can seat six or even eight people in a pinch, which has already proven to be useful with our big families (and my spread-out-all-the-tear-sheets propensities). Of course we’re still on the hunt for dining chairs so these are just for the meantime, but man, it’s such an upgrade to have room for adult sized plates again.
Just try not to stare too hard at pretty much anything except for the table. So ignore the faux-brick vinyl flooring, all that wood everywhere, and that graph-tastic wallpaper (I’ve already stripped about half of the room– so I owe you a post about that). Let’s just say that when we’re done with this kitchen, the table should make a lot more sense “in context.” In fact, here’s a similar table in a pretty BHG kitchen. Nice, right?
And you’ll never guess where this baby is originally from. I’ll give you a hint. It rhymes with Festoration Blardware.
But we didn’t pay $1795 – $2495 for ours. It actually turned up at one of our favorite local shops called The Decorating Outlet (which is the outlet for Shades of Light). It’s where a lot of returned merchandise or used-once-for-a-catalog-shoot items end up – so it’s an awesome place to score a deal (we bought the pendants in our last house’s kitchen and our old bedroom rug that now lives in Clara’s room there). Turns out this 60″ table hails from Restoration Hardware (where it’s sold for $2095) and it was just used a few times in some catalog shots before it sat in a storage room for a while and eventually ended up at the outlet… priced at a cool $650 (a 70% markdown!).
The top is awesomely weathered and the whole thing is made of reclaimed wood (so no two are ever alike). As a mom I like that Clara and the bun can beat on this table until the cows come home and all of those dents will be filed under “character.” See, when I was growing up we had a shiny lacquered table and it was waaaay too precious (there was a certain especially intense spirographing incident where I scratched it and never lived to hear the end of it).
It’s nice to know that now I can spirigraph my little heart out without fear of marring some perfectly smooth surface. And really, isn’t that the definition of happiness?
The fact that it’s such a well-made, solid piece makes us so happy (it’s crazy heavy! there’s nothing hollow or veneered about it). I’m hoping it will be one of those hand-down-to-your-kids pieces that outlives me and John. Who knows, maybe in 2113 our great great grandkids will be spirographing the days away on it. Sigh. Update: We’ve had a few questions about where our dining table from our previous house is, and the answer is that it’s in the dining room. The reason we didn’t contemplate bringing that into the eat-in kitchen area is because it’s around a foot wider (70?) and has larger chairs, so it works better in there and would be too cramped for the kitchen.
So that marks the second piece of furniture we’ve purchased since moving in around four months ago (which seems to be our pattern since we moved into our second house and bought our sectional and our dining table within a few months). Between our new West Elm dresser and this score of a table, so far we’ve spent $750 less than we did on those two initial purchases for our last house – but since our sunroom makeover is going to come in a bit higher than our patio project (which was the first big DIY undertaking that we tackled four months into that house) we’re most likely going to be on exactly the same track with the ol’ bank balance. Isn’t it funny how these things seem to have a pattern?
All mathy comparisons aside, we’re psyched to have two well-made furniture additions in our new house – especially since slowly acquiring more quality pieces was our goal here (we’ll always love thrift stores and Ikea along with building stuff, but we hope to have a nice mix of things in this forever home of ours). Now if only we could get the chairs for this table right on the first try. If our former dining room chair debacle is any indication, it might be a long road…
But at least our table is pretty. Even with our shinnnny fake brick floors. Just focus on this still life with lemon. Don’t look down.
Anyone else buying furniture? Or saving up for something solid and beat-up-able?

Fun fact: I’ve eaten a lot of sushi at that table before it was sold.
I can attest to the fact that it has weathered many a soy sauce spill when I worked there.
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, I LOVE IT! It came soy sauce approved.

Hah! I also had a spirograph incident with a dining table — luckily it was a second-string one that lived in the basement. The marks stayed there until I claimed the table after college and refinished it. Now we’re about to move into a house after years in apartments, and can’t wait to start buying nicer furniture.
Ginny @ Goofy Monkeys says
An excellent choice and a great deal! It looks great and it’s a much better size for the space than that bitsy white table you guys had in there. I may have missed it, but where did that white table end up?
YoungHouseLove says
That’s just sitting in the middle of the office right now on that circle rug in there. Very strange. I think it could be pretty in the guest room or our bedroom though – or tucked in a smarter place in the office, like in the bay window or something.

Heck yeah spirograph! We also had to have many sheets of paper down underneath the piece of paper we were ‘graphin’. Dang. What a good toy. Love the table too!

Gorgeous! I can totally envision it becoming the star in the redone kitchen. We’re on the hunt for a new sofa but still need to save up some money (X-mas Sofa Fund!). Have been thinking about Karl, do you guys still love it? We had purchased an old buffet from our local ReStore a few months ago and I finally finished painting it (using your tutorial of course!). It would have been a lot faster if I hand’t changed colors halfway through but after playing it safe with beige I thought to myself, why? And decided to go red after seeing a similar piece on Pinterest. Absolutely. Love. It. I ORBed the handles and knobs until I find new ones I love. Now I just need to re-paint/re-decorate the dining room around it! Been thinking of doing some stenciling too. Maybe I’ll send you guys some before and after pics when it’s all done :)
YoungHouseLove says
Would love to see pics! And yes, we totally still love Karl! It takes a licking (a kid, a dog, a pregnant lady, a 6′ tall sweaty DIYer) and keeps on ticking!

Love the new table! My husband and I just recently purchased our second piece of brand new, grown up/not ikea furniture. We got a couch since our hand-me-down one wasn’t really out style and was seriously fading. We got it at a local outlet for about 50% off the original price! Our first grown up purchase was a bed frame and mattress set. Other than those two pieces, everything else is either ikea, hand me downs, a gift (our glass coffee table), or from Craigslist. Gotta love a bargain that fits into your home!
Maureen says
This is a beautiful table! Do you need to worry about it staining at all? Is there any protective finish if a marker, wine, or marinara sauce gets on it? I’d love to get something like it but worry about staining. Thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
So far through syrup and spaghetti sauce and wine (we had the family over for the baby reveal news after we got this table) it has been great! The funny thing is someone from the store said it weathered soy sauce spills in the store, which cracks me up! I think since it’s just made of solid chunks of wood if there’s ever a stain from something I could just gently sand it and it would be raw wood again, so that’s comforting. Will keep you posted about how it wears over time of course!

Hmmm, I like the table, but I find it too similar to your other table. I wish you guys would rock a rectangle dining table!

Aw thanks Amanda! I think we just like round tables and round mirrors and ceramic animals! Haha! Although we do have a nice long rectangular table rocking out on the deck with seating for six!

I know you have had it for a long time, but do you remember where you got the old small white table that you were eating off of? I want a pedestal table about that size to use as a game table or possible homework table in our family/ playroom. That is the perfect size!
YoungHouseLove says
We actually made that a long time ago with a round piece of wood from Lowe’s (36?) and a thrift store pedestal base that we painted. Hope it helps!

Blardware- HA!
I hear ya about the spirographing – right after we painstakingly stained and poly-ed our new dining table my then 12 yr. old was using polish remover on her nails at the table, and spilled it! She tried so hard to get it quickly, but it had started to remove the poly. Worse, she did this while mom and dad were at work and neglected to tell us. We didn’t notice it for several days, because the light had to hit just so to see. Took a lot of talking to get either girl to fess up, but the truth finally came out. We were more mad that she didn’t tell than the damage done. Now, nothing is too precious, I even bought stuff for the new house that was clearance and damaged, so my grandkids could feel free to play. Hubs doesn’t get my thinking, but that’s nothing new! ;0)
YoungHouseLove says
Oh man, those spills make your heart stop with those shiny tables!

Wow that is gorgeous!! I love it!!! My hubby and I purchased our dining table from World Market… It was being discontinued so it was on sale, and then they added a birthday coupon, got us free shipping, and when the delivery got delayed twice, the manager kept knocking even more off the price, and by the time we got it, we ended up getting a $1,000 table for $450! and now two years later, we still love the table just as much as when we purchased it! Nothing like a good solid dining table :)

You were very wise to edit in the info about the dining room table. I was one of perhaps hundreds who was going to ask BUT WHERE IS THE OLD ROUND TABLE?! It’s nice to know I’m not the only one (1) who wondered, and (2) who forgot if you already told us where you plunked it.
Yay for great furniture scores! I’ve been married for 21 years and have yet to spend $650 on a piece of furniture. But I’d like to!

Lynn @ Our Useful Hands says
We just bought our family dining table last week. After looking for almost 2 years for the perfect fit, it finally was spotted as one of my last “midnight clicks” on craigslist. It has 2 inserts that allow it to fit up to 10 people when needed. It was a bit rough for the ware but with our trusty sander and some new stain and poly it’s pretty much a brand spankin’ new table right now. We got it for $150 for the table PLUS 5 chairs! Funny story: the seller came out and I thought he looked familiar – turns out him and his wife are full time bloggers and they were on the Nate Berkus Show years ago getting a family room makeover for their modern day brady bunch 6 kids family.
I love your table by the way. We sealed ours to an in between finish (not too matte and raw and not too honey looking) so I won’t have to worry too much about stains and such. I still need to upload pics of the before and after onto our blog but when I do, I’ll pass it along. (Maybe I should hold off until I can submit a true Reader Redesign of our living room?)
My best, Lynn

NO WAY! That’s the best story ever. And the table and chairs sound awesome too. Love it!

This is the first blog I’ve ever followed! I love your new table. How do you find such great furniture? Where did you find the chairs that you have with the table? Actually what I’m interested in are the smaller chairs that go with Clara’s little table. I’ve been looking for a table and chairs for my
2 little ones.
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks Joyce! We just look in a bunch of places and try to check back at local places and on ebay/craigslist/yard sales, etc. Clara’s chairs were from a yard sale, the white chairs around the new RH table are from Ebay and we built that little desk for Clara, so it really is a smorgasbord of different sources around here!

Niiiice! I like the direction you are taking with this house!
The style you showed in your inspiration picture is also my favourite: lots of white with some well made solid wood pieces and some accent colors in accessoires (that I like to switch with the seasons/whenever I feel like) = ?
Needle little Balance says
I also like that your new desk is practicly indestructable by kids. Says someone who ruined her parent´s delicate soft wood dining table with scratch pictures and also lives to hear about that after 20+years. :)
Sara says
I just bought a RH reclaimed wood table and was shocked at how easily it stained. When I called RH, their customer service wasn’t helpful. They told me to use coasters, placemats, and trivets. No so easy with a toddler! I didn’t want to return it (even though we were within the window) because it was the perfect size. So we decided to use varathane clear matte polyurethane on the top only per the recommendation of our contractor friend. Very pleased with the results, although we were annoyed that we had to seal a brand new $900 table. The clear matte poly didn’t change the color or the finish at all, and now the table wipes off easily and will hopefully be a forever piece in our house too.
YoungHouseLove says
So smart! Wow, I can’t believe they weren’t helpful on the phone. Who uses coasters at a dining table?! So far ours has weathered wine/spaghetti sauce/syrup/soy sauce (which makes me wonder if there’s some sort of protective wax or matte coating on it already) but I’m sure it’ll stain at some point. I’m just planning to sand it gently since it’s such a solid wood top. Will keep you posted for sure!

Did you just happen upon this table at the store? Or did you get a tip it was for sale there? Looks beautiful! (more closeups please!!)
YoungHouseLove says
Just walked in and there it was. Covered with stuff (they sell a lot of lights so there were table lamps all over it and chairs all around it). I sort of had to dig it out – haha! They said they had another one too but it had sold, so we put down a deposit to hold it, took the base (which we could fit in the car) and came back for the top with John’s dad’s SUV.

LOVE the table so much!! And I really like your philosophy of slowly acquiring more quality pieces over time for this house. We always struggle with decisions like whether to go with the $400 IKEA Ektorp sofa, or whether to wait and splurge on a sofa built with eight way hand tied strings. I do think that splurging on the quality item can sometimes be the most value-concious decision (but with small kids and pets — we got an Ektorp. :-). Ultimately, I think a mix is the way to go. Really looking forward to watching this house come together.
Laurie says
You’re smart. I somehow let myself get talked into a shiny, elegant dining table that no one could spirograph on and I regret it. It is beautiful but it is too fancy for me. And I don’t even have kids! I’d love to have something more durable and forgiving so I could use it as a craft surface when needed.
Even grown up we can get stuck with dopey rules. Maybe after this Thanksgiving (which I’ll host again), I’ll look into consigning it and getting a new table.
YoungHouseLove says
Aw, I’m sorry Laurie! Maybe check out craigslist to see if there are other non-shiny ones and sell yours for the same price so it’s sort of a switch? Or you can sand yours down and seal it with a matte stain/seal so it’s not so shiny and delicate?

You guys are my big-score-on-décor heroes. I’m still fanning myself over your Craigslist “chippy paint” sideboard from back in the day. The table (and the price you paid for it) is fantastic.
Meg says
I love that table. I just purchased a similar one (monastery) from RH but had to return it because the wood top was not sealed and they don’t recommend waxing or sealing it. The cleaning instructions said to ‘clean with a dry cloth” this didn’t seem practical for a kitchen table. Your table seems to have some kind of sealer/finish on it and the wood is so much prettier. It’s hard finding a round table that doesn’t have some kind of veneer on it.
More importantly, congratulations on your growing family! WIshing you a very happy and healthy pregnancy!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Meg! Ours must have something on it because it has been cool through pasta sauce and syrup and wine (and someone who works at the outlet said they spilled soy sauce on it, haha!) but it’s not shiny. Maybe it’s some sort of wax or flat/matte sealer?

What a beautiful table! We’ve been in the college student stage for our entire marriage, but in the last couple years we’ve started buying “real” furnishings. Last year was a sweet steam washer/dryer set, and last week we bought a gorgeous herringbone-patterned sofa at a parking lot sale at RC Willey. Still cheap/lower quality compared to what is out there, but our last couch was 50 bucks at a yard sale so we’re definitely moving up!

That’s so great! Beautiful table :) We just bought a farmhouse table from one of my husbands customers for $250. His grandfather built it and it had been in the family for 20 years, hardly a scratch on it! I hope it lasts us another 20 :D

Table is beautiful. And what a steal!
You inspired my hunt for a round dining table which we recently found a few weeks ago for our new home! At a donation based used furniture retailer, we scored (for only $250!)a gorgeous, solid wood, beautifully worn and OLD 48″ pedestal table. Faintly stamped on the bottom, next to a leaf mechanism that looked like it was from the middle ages, was the company “Penn Table Company-Huntingotn, VA”. A quick google determined that they produced from approx 1907-1930, and we think our table is from the early end of that range. Sooo AMAZING to know this table is full of 100 years of memories that our family will now add to!
You guys are the best. Congrats on baby #2!

Gorgeous table and what a great bargain! Does anything feel better than scoring a great deal? Ummm, NO. Well, 2 great deals….
As for chairs, there’s a Sarah Richardson episode (in my dream world Sarah and Tommy would decorate my entire house….a girl can dream) — anyway they decorated a dining room for a young family. Sarah upholstered the chairs in Sunbrella fabrics for the stain resistance. Just a thought.

I know you don’t plan on renovating your kitchen right away but do you have a plan (color scheme, layout, etc.)? I would be nervous to buy such a big ticket item only to find that it doesn’t work with the space after updating it in a year or so.
It would look awesome in a white/neutral, rustic kitchen with a lot of natural stone and texture!

Beautiful table and it looks perfect for kiddies. I have major buyer’s remorse over our shiny topped kitchen table…that is no longer shiny thanks to two little kids and a husband who likes to put hot things on top and scrub it clean with steel wool (only happened once but once was enough). It’s been on my lost to refinish in a more “distressed” way for ages. Well, it’s already distressed, but I’ll be going for a more intentionally distressed look!

I love love love it! I want to steal away with it. I see things like this sometimes and I get that rush like – no one else look at this – I’m buying it! You feel like you’re stealing it and wondering how on earth no one got it before you! Such a rush!
Also, it has nothing to do with this post, but it’s relavent for you… Sherwin Williams Harmony paint’s new formula is actually kind of negative VOC. It removes VOCs from the air from things like new furniture, new flooring, etc. And it has no silica – I think the only one out there with no silica. Full disclosure – I don’t work for them, but my husband is one of their store managers. In any case, I knew something like this would be of interest to you – sorry to sound liek a salesperson!

I was a little over-the-top about tables when my kids were younger, always obsessing over water marks and scratches and then a Texas wildfire burnt down the whole house. Talk about perspective!
These days the memories we build at the table take priority over the table itself. The water marks, burns, scratches, scuffs…
Those little things all add up to a very full life! Embrace the character of the table!

LOVE the table!! I also have a ‘rough’ wood kitchen table that lets the little ones beat up to their hearts content… BUT I have a problem with it. It has grooves where the various pieces are joined to form the table top (maybe similar to yours?) Food is constantly getting stuck in there and I usually can’t scrape/vacuum it all out. Should I fill it with something? That might look weird. Any ideas? I hope yours is of better quality and you can avoid this problem. As a fellow virginian (I’m in Charlottesville), you know how crumbs are an open invitation to ants in the summertime!
YoungHouseLove says
Hmm, that does sound annoying! Maybe try some wood filler just crammed into those areas to build them up so they’re not deep enough for things to collect anymore? Try testing it under the tabletop if you can to see if it matches and hopefully it blends right in.

LOVE that you have purchased a family table! I am actually set to become owner of a family table. Not waiting on a passing, just a larger dining room. :) It was my great grandparents table and is massive, heavy and beautiful. Beautifully carved legs, a natural wood grain top and so, so many “character” stains and what not. The holes from the old meat carver are still present from over 100 years ago. There is also some pesky paint from one of my art projects not so many years ago. My mom can even point out “the stitches” incident. Growing up I always thought this table was ugly and needed to be replaced. I was embarrassed, and embarrassed to admit this, by the table. I would always insist it had a table cloth on it. Now, it is invaluable.
So glad you invested in a piece that will archive the story of your family!!
Ok, I’m off to sip on nostalgia and trulia. Feeling an urgent need to get that large dining room!
