Alternate punny title: Leaf it to me. Oh yeah, there’s nothing like a little corniness on a Tuesday afternoon. I blame it on being downright giddy to have power again. Ohthankgoodness. Anyway, this weekend before the chaos that was Irene I actually helped with a little bridal shower for our cousin Megan who is getting hitched this fall. John’s mom hosted the sweet informal gathering at her place, and each one of the daughters (and in this case, me the daughter-in-law) were asked to bring a few things. I was in charge of a bowl of candy, and a little bit of table decor. Nothing too crazy, just a few small touches to hopefully get people into the fall spirit (as inspired by Megan’s pretty fall-ish wedding invitations):
Of course I took it as an opportunity to get all craft-tastic (I tried to resist, but I was powerless against the draw of Michael’s). First I grabbed $2.50 worth of colored paper in a few pretty fall-ish colors. Then when I got home I googled “leaf pattern” and sketched out a few different leaf outlines onto a piece of white cardstock with a pen (I just free-handed them, but you probably could trace them right off the computer screen too). Were they perfect? Nah. Were they leaf-esque? Sure.
Then I cut them out. It didn’t take ten seconds, but it wasn’t too bad. Maybe five minutes for ten of them. I recommend watching Real Housewives Of NJ in the background to keep morale up.
Then I used each cardstock leaf as a template and traced it onto one of my colored craft papers with a black pen. I actually ended up tracing each one a few different times and crowded them in so I’d get as many leaves as possible from each sheet of paper. And yes, I did crack insanely bad jokes like “hey John, leaf me alone” as I went. He was not amused.
Then I stacked an extra sheet under the one that I traced my leaf shapes onto (so I could cut each leaf out once, but get two out of the deal – each in a different color thanks to the stacked paper). Then I did the rest of my sheets in the same way (tracing the shapes on the top page and stacking the paper so I could cut it once and get a few leaves out of it). Total time spent: an episode of Real Housewives. And surprisingly (because I half expected this crazy spurt of craftiness to be a total bust), the varied colors and shapes ended up being pretty darn cute.
I mean they’re not über upscale and spendy looking (Posh might not demand them at her next shindig), but they’re sweet and charming in that homemade full-of-love sort of way. Which seems to work when you’re casually gathering with family on a stormy day to celebrate love, love, and more love. I ended up sprinkling them down the middle of the table to make a little leaf runner of sorts.
Not bad for $2.50.
Then came my weird M&M project. I thought tracking down some sort of candy in fall tones could be sweet in a clear cylinder vase (of which we have many, leftover from our own wedding). So when I came across two bags of brown, red, and yellow peanut butter M&M’s at Target, I took the bait and bought them (for around $5 total). Then I sorted them by color in three bowls and stashed each tone in a different ziplock bag so I could bring them with me to the party already-sorted. Oh yeah, and wash your hands before you touch all the candy. In case you’re wondering, I watched last week’s Design Star during this part of the process (I’m hopelessly behind on that show – don’t ruin this week’s episode because we haven’t seen it yet).
Once I arrived at the party, my big M&M arranging finale took ten seconds. I just poured the pre-sorted brown ones into my big glass cylinder vase, followed by the pre-sorted red and yellow ones. Bing, bam, boom.
I probably can’t take any credit for the fact that everyone scarfed them down (peanut butter M&Ms are irrefutably addicting in their own right) but Megan and the other ladies seemed to enjoy the little layered look. Weird candy separating mission accomplished.
I also grabbed eight glasses from Target (sold for $2.99 for a set of four, so I spent under $6 total) and John’s mom just took a few clippings from two potted mums that she already had on the front porch to make eight mini bouquets to fill our glass “vases.” I loved the idea of using already-owned potted mum clippings because there are about a million blooms covering them, so it’s way more bang for the ol’ buck. We probably would have needed to buy at least four bouquets of flowers to fill the eight vases that our two mums easily covered with plenty of blooms to spare (we tried to clip from the perimeter/underside of them, so the remaining plants will still look nice and fresh out on the porch for a few more months).
So with the cups-turned-vases filled with mums and my little paper leaves spread down the center of the table like a festive little runner, it was time for one last touch. Oh yes I did buy six little glittery faux pinecones from Michael’s for 50 cents a pop. Guilty as charged. I can’t help it. I’m like a magpie when it comes to shiny things. Especially shiny fall-ish things in the golden color palette of the leaves from Megan’s wedding invitation. They conveniently came on a little wire (I think they’re made to be stuffed into bouquets or wreaths) so I just stuck them randomly into a few of the little mum vases (which we sent home with each guest as a small party favor).
It was a sweet little party. Even though it was rainy and gross outside, it was warm and happy inside. And I don’t mean to harp on odd things like glittery pinecones (I’m from Jersey, ok? Maybe that explains it), but they seemed to be quite the hit.
Oh and check out this cute thing John’s mom put together. We all played one of those how-well-do-you-know-the-bridge-and-groom games, and she hunted down fall-colored ribbons and tootsie pops to tie on top of each clipboard, which she also sent home with each guest. So yeah, come to our family’s showers if you want to leave with vases of flowers, glittered pinecones, ribbon slash tootsie pop riddled clipboards, and M&M hangovers. Do we know how to party or what?
My favorite part of the whole celebration was when Clara and her cousin Jake serenaded us. Once again proving that random is good. Bring on the paper leaves and faux pinecones! And don’t forget that baby solo to end things with a bang.
Oh and because you know I love a little budget breakdown, here are all the supplies I grabbed:
- Paper leaf “runner” (made from 6 sheets of Michael’s craft paper): $2.50
- Five glittered faux pinecones (from Michael’s:) $2.50
- Eight glasses to use as mum vases (from Target): $5.98
- Potted mum clippings: $0 (already out on the porch, but they might be $5 a plant at a grocery store for a small one)
- Two bags of fall-colored peanut butter M&M’s (from Target): $5
- Glass cylinder vase for M&Ms: $0 (leftover from our wedding, but originally from Michael’s for a few bucks)
- Total: $15.98
Not bad for eight flowering favors in little glass vases, a festive fall-inspired table runner o’ leaves, and a quirky color-coded dish of M&Ms. I just liked that it felt more Megan-specific to DIY a few things than run to party city and spend $20 on plastic tablecloths and crepe paper. But enough about my insane propensity for faux nature and glittered anything (why yes I did own a bedazzler in ninth grade). Have you guys whipped up any crafty little homemade-with-love party decor? Ever arranged candy by color? I think that takes a special kind of crazy. And I’m happy to wave my little yes-I-sorted-M&Ms-by-hand freak flag nice and high.

Nice project! I’d recommend using a craft knife to cut out the template leaves. I do a lot of paper cutting in my line of work, and I find that it’s quicker and easier for individual shapes like that. Not so easy to do in front of the TV, though.

This is true. And I’m scared for my fingers. I actually cut off a decent sized chunk of my pointer finger in art school with an exacto knife (and rode home on the subway bleeding everywhere and freaking out). Thankfully it grew back so I’m not missing anything obvious.

When one of my best friends got married we crafted up a ton of stuff – wedding invites, bouquets, wedding favors (the fanciest Andes Mints evah!), and much more. It looked amazing and all the bridemaids got to bond over ribbon, silk flowers, scrapbooking paper and the like.

For a baby shower I hosted a few years ago…I purchased a grocery store flower arrangement, a white table cloth and used this clear glass train as decoration (oh, I couldn’t resist the Party City stock “It’s a Boy” banner. It was simple
,..For my son’s last three birthday parties, I have managed to avoid a theme party, hopefully i can still get away with it next year. For his first I made the invites a generic baby lion, using orange and lime as the color scheme. Since the party was in a park the only decorations were store bought sunflowers on the food table, a small cluster of balloons and a banner. For 2nd I just did balloons and food table flowers. For his 3rd and did the flowers and Clara party inspired pom poms. Basically I like to use flowers…and keep it simple less to toss.

I love the decorations you made! Perfect for a Fall wedding. My husband and I were married in the Fall too, so I’m partial! ;)
I have gold glittery pinecones and pine trees that I decorate my mantle with at Christmas-time. And I also DIY-ed a Fall wreath with tons of glittery accents that I put out every autumn!
Oh, and the separating m&ms? I totally would do that for party colors…that’s cool! But was it totally lame of me that I actually once sorted through an entire party-sized bag of pretzel m&ms and counted out serving sizes? I can’t believe I did that, but it was when I’d first gotten pregnant and was being obsessive about what I ate. It did help me to eat only the serving size…otherwise I could down half a bag of those at once!

So, to tie two of your recent posts together, I have about three tons of pine cones strewn about my yard right now, thanks to Mean Irene. I’ll be happy to box them up and send them to you the next time you want to glitter them, or maybe even ORB them, all the while wishing a pox on Ashley the Twit. Or maybe Juicy Joe. One more thing…I’m on the hunt for a birthday party like fabric. I would like to make a table cloth to use at my son’s parties every year. What I have been doing is just buying the buffet table cloth to match his party. The first year I found a lion theme table cloth, 2nd a fire truck and 3rd a colorful one( I had a simple rainbow theme). The table cloth is has far as I go in the party aisle at Party City, the rest I just pull out colors for the plates and napkins.

Oh my gosh, I am so happy to have found a compatriot in the crazy candy capers. I host a huge Mardi Gras party every year (St. Louis has the biggest celebration in the US after New Orleans, of course!) and one year I bought a huge bag of skitles from Sam’s, washed my hands, settled down with some awesomely bad tv, and sorted them by color so I could have big cylinders of purple, yellow, and green candies! I thought it looked awesome! I especially enjoyed the look of fear in my friends’ eyes as they realized the extent of my crazy. :)

When I threw my best friend’s bridal shower, she opted for a brunch so I ended up buying a ton of breakfast foods, including some plain and blueberry bagels. The funny part was that the blueberries ended up tinting the bagels slightly purple (her wedding colors were purple and ivory), so even her bagels ended up being color-coordinated! :)
I love that clipboard idea! It seems like everyone is always scrambling for a flat surface to write on during those games. So clever!

I just co-hosted a bridal shower for my bff, Annie, and we did a coffee theme. We took the window from my wedding and painted over it with chalkboard paint to make a “specials board” and had two vintage coffee urns with lots of syrups for people to make their own brew.
I made a banner from scrap book paper (Michael’s!) that said “Annie and Juan the Perfect Blend”. We also had an advice station where guest wrote advice for the bride on a little heart and placed it in a vase. We did some candles in vintage tea cups and vases with whole coffee beans for further effect. The whole thing was a big hit!

Take it from someone that grew up in Brooklyn, New York I know how bad Irene was. Still I think it is great that so much was accomplished through the time that calamity hit. I was looking at the pictures and it reminds me, as I am setting up my new home, how important color coordination can be when it comes to decorating a room. I know need to rethink all of my sheets and such but at least now I can get my room looking like a bedroom and not a 70s love shack.

Gorgeous, I can’t believe you did it for so cheap!
I am definitely up there in the crazy candy stakes. I once sorted through 6 kilograms of smarties to get out the pink and orange ones. I was making cookie jar favors for my sisters baby shower. I hunted everywhere here in Brisbane (Australia) for bags of individual colors but couldn’t find them anywhere. So I did what any good sister would do, I bought the jumbo bags of mixed colors and started sorting :)

In other news, I’m glad you have your power back! I figured you did….I teach at the school near you and we were finally (thankfully!) allowed back in today. You were right, the neighborhood is total devastation.:( I’ve taught there for 8 years and never seen such destruction. Glad you guys were fairly unscathed but am so sad for the families of many of my students (like the cow house). Irene WAS mean, you are right about that! Thoughts and prayers for you and your neighbors.
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Kara. It’s so sad how bad things still look (nearly every tree that was on a house on Saturday is still there today) but I guess things with insurance and finding available tree guys take time. Definitely still thinking of all of our neighbors who are affected. The bright side is that in some weird way it made us all closer as a community. We’ve all been checking in on each other and now we’re all so giddy to have power. It’s nice.

I recently did the decorations for my childhood friends bridal shower. I made 200ish paper roses from card stock in different shades of blue and purple. I also printed 20 pictures of her and her fiance as well as some more sentimental ones like the helicopter he proposed in, and her parents wedding photo. I printed them in black and white and framed them for her (so she can start a photo wall of her own!). I lined the edges of the tables with frames and flowers, it was beautiful!

i absolutely LOVE your punny blog titles. mine are so boring. play room. play room part one. play room part two. etc. lol.
so, funny story. i went to home depot tonight to get rustoleum ‘aqua’ and ‘green apple’ to spray the chairs for our play room.
i specifically asked the lady at the counter – do i need a spray primer FIRST to ensure the wood grain is covered? no, no! of course not! spray paint will cover anything!
okay. then i come home, waste a billion minutes of my life spraying the living heck out of the chairs….just to realize that i needed a primer. my wood grain is showing clear though!
check it out here – http://www.238windsor.blogspot.com/
i’m so mad! lol. do you know if you can buy primer spray paint? or would i have to do it all by brush?
YoungHouseLove says
Oh man- that stinks! The good news it they have a spray primer (made by Kilz) that I think will help. I’d just sand it a bit, spray prime it once or twice (maybe even three times if you’re doing suuuper thin applications- just mist it). Good luck!
xo,
s
ashlee says
is general idea with spray painted furniture to ALWAYS spray prime first? i’m totally annoyed at this lady. lol. & to make matters worse she was like 70. i don’t think she’s up to speed with modern day products, haha.
do i need to prime over the ENTIRE surface of my newly sprayed chairs? or just the high traffic areas ie the seats. try to sand that spray paint off, prime, and then give a few coats of new coloured spray?
thank god paint is forgiving.
YoungHouseLove says
I would try to rough everything up with sandpaper and mist everything with a few thin and even coats. That way you’ll end up with a consistent look and not certain parts that have more coverage. Good luck!

Pretty table—-fall is my fav time of year. Your gold pinecones reminded me of what I did years ago for our Christmas table, spraying gold paint on some pine cones, and then “tipping” them with white glitter to look like snow on the edges. I put them in a basket, added some nuts and other natural things with them, and they looked great. I brought them out for years and we loved it. Practically “free” decorations. One year I even made pine bough swags with gold painted (real) pears wired on. They looked great and lasted long enough to enjoy with no problems. You don’t have Reese’s Pieces? Seems like those would be easier to find than fall-themed M&Ms, or maybe we just don’t have them in Canada. Hmm…
Maybe I’m crazy but I think it might be interesting to overlap the leaves a little bit and sew them together into a table runner, kind of like a paper version of http://pinterest.com/pin/139553941/ (and now i’m thinking of creating that with paper snowflakes for Christmas). Or laminating them afterward and being able to use it for more casual functions or even as something to go over the table during messy projects.
