We’re about to get video happy up in this hizzy. It’s once again time for a video house tour since it has been about six months since the last one and lots has changed since then. So here it is. Ten soul-stirring minutes of me and John walking around the house together while I blab and he films (John = steady hands, Sherry = the chatty one). We’re nothing if not high tech. So come on in and walk around with us…
A few notes:
- I’ve listened to this five times trying to hear Natalie Portman or Mila Kunis (since you guys always say you hear it) and I just can’t.
- We filmed this with our new camera, which we’ll be sharing more details on this afternoon (in case you couldn’t tell, we’re still getting a handle on the audio – haha)
- While watching this back John made fun of me for “feigning cluelessness about how a dog gets into a chair” (at 33 seconds in) and said “does he jump? does he fly?” which made me snort laugh. But seriously, I’ve never seen Burger get into those chairs – he always just… materializes.
- I love seeing the house through the eyes of the video camera because it helps me see things I miss in person. For example, looking from the office back into the dining room makes me want to raise the art up about 6″ inches above the buffet, so it still connects to what’s under it but lets things breathe a little more.
- Sorry my voice gets louder and softer, it’s literally because if I wasn’t exactly the same distance from the camera John was holding it would fluctuate, so I tried to stay glued to him, but I’m a flailer when I talk… so…
- You can actually see John and I working our dorky joint video-making magic in the mirror of our master’s sink nook at 5:53 in the video. Priceless.
- Drinking game: take a sip every time I say “secret book projects.”
- Are the baad brass doorknobs sucking the life out of you through your computer screen? They’re like kryptonite to me. Gotta get on those.
- At 9:13 when I say Clara’s room will always remain a nursery, I don’t mean that she’ll be 15 and sleeping in a crib. I just mean she’ll move into the playroom (which will become her big girl room) and then if a future Petersik bean should come along, that room will be theirs since it’s the smallest (so it works the best with a crib).
- Was that not the dorkiest, most embarrassing ending of all time? “I’m getting over a stomach bug so… all you need is love?” What is wrong with me? Maybe I should just stick to “Seacrest, out.”
- What’s with me being sick right before each video tour? Seriously. Maybe there’s something primal about cleaning the house when you’re recovering from some evil germ-fest and then I saying “hey, the house is clean… it’s time for a tour!”
And now, just for fun I thought I’d end with the link to the last video tour we shared six months ago (complete with terrible camera shakiness since I wasn’t smart enough to recruit John and his steady hands last time) – just because it’s pretty funny to see how much has changed. You know what they say about videos, they’re worth a thousand pictures. Wait, they don’t say that? Well the should. Do you guys ever videotape your house, just to see how it changes over time or to document what you’ve accomplished so far? Do you have terribly flail-y hands that make for a Blair-Witch-ish result? Would your hubby ever walk around with you and hold the camera while you jabber on? I think John deserves an award for that. Perhaps a handmade award courtesy of my flail-y hands. Oh and if you’re watching the most recent video and wondering what we still have on our ever-growing to-do list, this somewhat updated rundown has all that info for ya. Hootie hoo! Seacrest, out.
Psst- Check out all the other house tour videos since we’ve moved in here, here, here, here and here. And here’s an outside tour from last year and an updated one from this year. Viva la video camera!
Swetlana says
After watching this video I realized that I really should’ve watched your other hometours too, because it helped so much in REALLY orientating around you guys’ house! Can’t wait to see some/all of the book related things once you guys are allowed to talk about it & wish you all the best for everything book related that is coming up soon! :)
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Swetlana!

Perhaps a little wooden table to cover/hide the power meter on the deck. Does someone come out and read that thing, or do you have automated reporting?
YoungHouseLove says
We have automated reporting, but we do have to keep it accessible for them. We definitely have plans to camouflage it, though!

Is the door next to the buffet table a coat or linen closet? Would love to see a peak into it. I’m always jealous of the super organized linen closets I see on Pinterest.
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, I wish it was organized! It’s a coat closet but it pretty much has a stack of boxes on the floor, some coats on wood hangers (wahoo! at least those match) and more boxes of things on the shelves up top. I have dreams of organizing everything in colorful matching boxes… someday…

Brynn says
Wow I just absolutely love your house. Really makes me wish I had a ranch-style house like that. I think the layout is awesome.
Angela says
Great video! I have been working on my master bedroom for a while but am stuck in a rut with it so your video has given me some ideas which will hopefully set things in motion again! Thanks for sharing!
Megan says
Well thank you for having me over today for a house tour. While watching it, I love how everything flows together. There is a lot going on in places, but it’s not overwhelming at all. It’s all beautifully placed! I’ve been struggling with my small home and how to make it feel organized with 5 people living in it. It’s always great to have inspiriation!
Thank goodness you got rid of those fail chairs in the front room!
I found your comment of flailing while you talk funny! Oh, did you do a little tap dance after talking about the kitchen that Santa made? Tee-hee!
Tina Bland says
Where is Clara?!?!?! Great tour guys, love the non-shakiness, love the house:) I hear Mila more than Natalie!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Tina! She was with her grandparents at the park. They have a play date every week so we seized the moment and ran around with the camera!

sophie says
hi petersiks! love the house tour!
are you guys planning on doing anything with the blank space on the out-facing side of the tall white kitchen cabinet? i have a space like that too and have been wondering what to do with it!!!
YoungHouseLove says
We have thought about some sort of chalkboard or bulletin board or something. Not sure where we’ll end up, but you know we’ll keep you posted!
xo
s
Connie says
First, You totally sound like Mila Kunis…
Second, your guest room is, hands down, my favorite room in your house! I can’t even pick a favorite thing but that wall color! That beautiful, bold wall color! And the curtains, and the headboard, and the pillows! And the rug! I just can’t get enough!
Question, for this book project auction you’ve mentioned a few times… I’m hoping this will be available to your readers??
YoungHouseLove says
Yes, we’re working hard to figure it out. We initially wanted to open it to everyone and ship things but we’re finding out that in order to make money for a charity, shipping certain items is out of the questions since we’ll actually lose money. Womp-womp! So there will most likely be a local auction and we’d love to do an online auction with a few of the smaller projects/items if we can work it out :)
xo
s
Angela says
What if shipping was an additional cost the buyer had to pay for?
YoungHouseLove says
We have thought about that too, but it’s so pricey (two items are large dressers, which can’t be flat-packed, they’re assembled and already painted, so we don’t want them to be damaged in shipping). We’re still trying very hard to work things out and we’ll share deets as soon as we have them!

Thanks Jason! Love right back atcha.

Yes you totally 100% sound like Mila Kunis
Yes the “All you need is love” art should be moved up
Yes those brass doorknobs send me into depression
Love your house and never get tired of you guys sharing it. Absolutely can not wait to see the secret book projects! (drink!)
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, down the hatch!

…shouldn’t it be “sher-dog out” ? ;) (sorry, couldn’t help myself!)
YoungHouseLove says
Yes. Totally should be. Ha!

LOVE your house and style so much– sooooo cheerful. I took photos in this home store and realized they were sherry colors– dark teal blue vases and pops of cheery grellow too.
Ok I know I will be another– where did you get that? I love the dark blue shower curtain in the guest bath and think it would be great material to staple gun for my kitchen chairs that have built in padded light cushions.
I covered them with pink dahlia cloth napkins from world market but they stain too much and the fabric is not spill friendly
was looking for Clara to pop up or Burger to follow you from room to room.
my cat does the same thing–crawls on top of the pillow and curls up.
YoungHouseLove says
That’s from Target! Hope they still sell it!

Erika says
I totally hear Natalie Portman with hints of Mila Kunis here and there. It’s kind of awesome.
Anele @ Success Along the Weigh says
It cracks me up that you can’t Natalie Portman. I would swear you hired her to do a voiceover for the video and can picture no one else as I listen to it!
Jeanet says
Can I move in? Please! I’ll be a really good house mate although the commute might kill me (I live in Denmark).
Thank you for posting this video. It is so fun to see it all together.
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, that IS a bad commute! Thanks for the kind words :)

Beautiful home! Rooms flow visually from one to another so nicely. Love the use of color and neutrals throughout. Thank you so much for sharing!
Alicia M says
Thanks for the update!! I love everything you do, and often find myself thinking…daaannngg, why didn’t I think of that!? ;)
In the shot of the kitchen (at 6:32ish), I can’t help but notice the white canvases that are the side of the pantry and side of the fridge. Have you guys ever considered chalk-boarding those? Or painting with magnetic paint like the wall in your old office? Maybe you’ll leave them as is to avoid clutter, but I see them as prime space for something fun!
YoungHouseLove says
Yes, we have thought about chalkboard or bulletin boards, but aren’t sure where we’ll end up. We’ll keep you posted for sure!

Wrenaria says
I love your house! Truly.
Beth says
“…and then if a future Petersik bean should come along, …” Hmmm. Foreshadowing?
YoungHouseLove says
Nope, not pregnant! Haha. But someday we’d love another one :)

Alison says
I was wondering if the if meant you were not sure. And Clara would be a one and only.
YoungHouseLove says
I had a scary complication with Clara that would make it a high risk pregnancy if I were to ever get prego again, so it’s definitely something we think about long and hard. Gotta be ready, ya know?

Thanks for the updated tour – super fun to see everything working together when we so often see it in bits and pieces. I have to admit that I literally sighed a relieved sigh when you unveiled the new dining room chairs – just makes me happy! Oh and randomly (this is the classically trained singer in me talking) I think the ‘Mila Kunis’ that some people here is the odd time that Sherry’s voice goes into ‘glottal fry’ (totally charming technical term), I noticed it when you were talking about the shelves/plates on the wall of penny tile and in discussing the playroom. Mainly it sounds husky and that is something Mila does a lot. Thanks again – sorry for the novel!
YoungHouseLove says
Ya learn something new every day! Love “glottal fry!” – so funny!

Always love your house tours! And since it’s dinner time here in Denmark, I actually had a glass of wine in my hand as I was watching this. And now, thanks to your little drinking game, I’m not gonna get any more work done tonight… :D
PS: I totally hear Natalie Portman as well!
YoungHouseLove says
Hahah! Love that! Cheers!

Anna says
Your house is evolving nicely! ^__^
I’ve discovered my new favourite view: looking to your dining room from the office. It looks stilysh but very homey, the kind of place I could sit and feel like at home.
Next house tour would be performed by Clara & Burger.
(Btw my daughter couldn’t see Burger at first, she said you have a “camouflage dog”)
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, I love that!

One night a few months ago (i think shortly after you posted a video), I was folding laundry while watching Letterman. I didn’t realize Letterman had ended and Craig Fergusson was on when all of a sudden I heard the woman he was interviewing and thought “woah, are the doing a special on Young House Love?” … Then I bothered to look at the tv and saw it was Mila Kunis! You really sound just like her! (not her acting voice, just her candid interview voice)
YoungHouseLove says
So funny!

Everything looks great! Now that you have those brown chairs in the dining room, I am going put my vote in for painting the frame on the All You Need Is Love frame dark brown or black. I think the contrast would look great, especially now with the added wood/wicker! Again, beautiful house!
Samm Spangler says
Couple things…
1. Your house is adorable… just LOVE it.
2. While browsing on craigslist, I saw this buffet which is almost an EXACT match to the one you got… only difference? About $600!! Congrats again for finding one at such an amazing price! super cute! http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/fuo/3222829752.html
YoungHouseLove says
Woah! No way!

You’re too harsh on yourselves, this is very well done. I only got to take three SBP shots… of Diet Coke.

Gabriella @ Our Life In Action says
Got to say – I just LOVE the dark grey paint in the bedroom. It really brings out all the different colours in the room.
Julie says
Your house looks so cheerful and fun! I love your liberal use of color. I feel like I need to go paint my nails now or better yet, paint a wall.
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, I love it!

Sarah says
This is probably a strange thing to comment on, but I am glad to see that your living room rug is curled at one corner. I have a similar rug and it is curled from my toddlers crawling/kicking it!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yeah, we beat that rug up! That rug and Karl get so much abuse, but they keep on ticking :)

Erin says
Loved the video! I hope that my “forever house” has such an awesome flow and an open layout like yours! If you don’t mind me asking… What was your buying price and how many sq feet is it? Watching the video made me wonder if you guys have thought about painting the exterior brick by your new deck? It could really lighten up the area and make it seem bigger. Also wondering, what you plan to do with the guest bathroom?… I have a 1/2 bath with similar colored tile and I can’t figure out how to tie that color into ANYTHING! I’d love to tear it down, but I can’t until I exhaust my options, any thoughts? Sorry this is so long…. I’m just excited…haha! Can’t wait for your book to come out… I’ve already dropped the hint to my husband!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks, Erin! Our house is around 2400 square feet (including the sunroom, which is on a different heating system). As for our house price, we actually don’t chat about how much we spent on it (we have this weird little “we don’t blog about things we wouldn’t talk about at the dinner table with family” thing, so since we would chat about how much an item of furniture would cost with friends and relatives, but wouldn’t talk about how much we paid for our house, we just don’t blog about those details). As for painting the walls out by the deck, we have definitely talked about that, although we’re not sure it would be good for resale (unpainted brick in Richmond is more sought after since it’s no-maintenance). And about the guest bathroom, we’re not sure if we’ll just do small updates for a while and work with the tile or somehow keep some of it and do more major updates around it. Will keep you posted for sure when we figure it out :)

Hi guys!!
First, your house is beautiful! Second, where did you get the shelves in your kitchen? The ones on your tiled wall?
Thanks for your help!
S.
YoungHouseLove says
We actually made those with framing lumber and brackets that we found at Home Depot. Hope it helps!

I always read the blog but am not usually in a place where I can watch the videos but wow, Natalie Portman’s voice with Milan Kunis’s cadence…crazy!
Sara says
Hm, the door right next to the buffé and “All you need is love”-art… what’s in there?! *curious!*
YoungHouseLove says
That’s a coat closet. Haha. A very messy one.

TOTAL Mila! No question.
Also, for some reason this video makes me think the media cabinet project should be up next.

Yes!! I’m ready!

Thanks for the tour. It’s nice to see everything all at once. When you were apologizing about your toilet seat being up my 2 year old son goes, “There’s their potty!” so it made a hit with someone:)
YoungHouseLove says
Haha! Nice.

Janice says
It really hit me yesterday when you showed the view from the front door, and again today with the same view – what a drastic change you have made, both structurally and decor wise, to the house. If the previous owners walked in, they wouldn’t even feel like it was the same house, it has undergone such a transformation inside. So fresh and bright!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Janice! I’m excited to have the realtor who helped the old owners sell our house come over and tell us what she’d say it’s worth now. Wouldn’t that be interesting to see how much she thinks it may have improved? I can’t wait!
xo

Rachel says
Never thought of Mila or Natalie, but I could TOTALLY hear it! You could do voiceovers!
JenS says
So, have you noticed that your dining room/kitchen cut out is in the shape of a giant P (as in Petersik?) Never noticed that before!

Haha- it’s our secret monogram!

I love these tours, makes me want to pack up and move in!!Oh, and how awesome is it to have a voice twin with Natalie Portman!? Thanks for allowing us a peak into your lovely home <3
Lauren says
I love watching your house tours. It’s amazing what you have accomplished since buying this house.
We recently replaced all of the 1980’s brass door knobs in our house with some inexpensive ORB ones from Lowe’s. It made such a difference…I think it’s one of my favorite updates we’ve done so far! :)
YoungHouseLove says
That sounds delicious. I love those little changes that make a whole room feel new/expensive.

Karen F says
thanks for the tour! you have SUCH a pretty home. I just love your taste in things. The layout of the living room and your master BR always kind of confused me and this tour helped me work it out (for now at least). And thanks for turning the camerawork over to John! :)
Crystal @ 29 Rue House says
I haven’t got to watch the tour yet but I’m looking forward to seeing it tonight. After reading your post and some of the comments, you’ve got me a bit excited to maybe try making a video tour of our home. It’d be great incentive to do some major cleaning/straightening…which I need!
Kathy says
Next to your fireplace, I notice what looks like a framed shadow box or something similar. Is there a link or close up of this project on your website? I’m trying to put together something like this with momentos from a past Europe trip that my husband I took years ago and could use some inspiration. :)
Thanks for the house tour! I think your bedroom has had the most dramatic updates– love it!
YoungHouseLove says
That’s actually just a poster from allposters.com of a little kitchen shelf with cute kitchen-y things on it. Hope it helps!

oh! haha…I could’ve sworn it was 3-dimensional. Thanks! :)

I love the tour! I had a “that’s exactly what I’ve been searching for!” moment when I caught a glimpse of the light fixture in the hall bath. I’m not seeing it on your source list – was it there when you bought the house? Thank you for continually inspiring me!
YoungHouseLove says
That’s from Joss&Main.com. It was super on sale, I think $60 with free shipping!

A.MAZING!! THe difference is crazy. The house looks soooooooooo good!! Well done you guys. I am totally inspired to starting getting after all those half finished projects I have going on around here. :)
MK says
This is an odd question, but I have een thinking of making a frame wall similar to yours and was wondering….How do all those frames do with dust? I’m kind of a maniac when It comes to dusting and I think I would o crazy if I was havin to dust between all of those frames too frequently!
YoungHouseLove says
Oddly enough they’re not too bad! I’ve probably dusted them once a year. Haha. Just with a quick pass of a feather duster. Not bad at all!
