I can’t promise that we’ll execute this mood board to a T when it comes to our future bedroom – heck, the entire vision could easily shift by the time we move into a new home. But as of right now, this is what I’m loving (and John’s surprisingly right there with me):
1. I’m dreaming of a cozy and enveloping room painted in a rich and saturated teal like the stripe of color across the top of the mood board (Benjamin Moore’s Rendezvous Bay 726). I’d temper the bold color by adding some white furnishings/accessories and some rich dark woods to ground things. And then I’d add a pop of tangerine, just because I’m feeling crazy. Layering in a few different prints and patterns along with some geometric shapes and modern lines will be the icing on the cake.
2. This round mirror will bounce around lots of light and break up the rich hue on the wall to make sure it still feels relatively light and airy. I can see it now, hanging centered above the four-poster bed.
3. This sleek and affordable double dresser in a rich wood tone could definitely come in handy since the built-in drawers and shelves in our bedside wardrobes are staying behind (we’re offering them up to whoever buys our house since they’re built in with a header and crown molding). Oh and sometimes these Ikea dressers come up on craigslist for even less than their already low in-store price.
4. John and I are both loving the idea of a new bed with some presence (we’re also leaving our current bed frame for the future homeowner since it fits perfectly between our two bedroom built-ins). And this new bed combined with the luxe teal walls will still feel airy and open while creating some pretty great “lines” in the room.
5. These curtains would look amazing with teal walls. And John and I have both loved the idea of embracing more pattern and color in the next house- even though it means moving away from the breezy white curtains that we currently enjoy in every room. Change is good.
6. John loved the idea of a pop of tangerine in the bedside lamps for a less monochromatic effect (we really are embracing color, huh?). And although we love these beauties from Crate & Barrel, we’ve also seen something similar (and super cheap) at HomeGoods so we might check those options out if we end up bringing this mood board to fruition someday.
7. The clean and modern lines of this night table will pair perfectly with the four poster bed and the dresser for a not-quite-matchy-matchy look that still “goes.”
8. I’ve been loving this chic organic bedding since first laying eyes on it in the West Elm catalog a few months back. And John agrees that a new bedroom in a new house deserves some new bedding (yesssssss). I really like how textured and layered this room could feel with a large scale pattern on the duvet and another bold-ish pattern on the curtains. And the clean-lined brown and white furnishings will definitely play a nice supporting role in the room (so it doesn’t feel too crazy and chaotic).
So there it is. My master bedroom wish list as it stands today. Anyone else loving the layering of different textures, patterns, and rich saturated hues (cut by a fair amount of white if you’re us)? Any other bedroom planning or daydreaming going on?

Loving the colors you’ve chosen and the way you’re balancing it out with more muted accents (as opposed to before where the overall look was neutral with pops of colors in accents).
I laughed when I read that you were centering the mirror above the 4-post bed…I had to read it twice to make sure you weren’t making a joke about it being on the ceiling! :) But I get it now…my brain is working in slow-mo today!
Nicole says
I’m totally with you on the texture and color. I’ve always had very plain very neutral curtains in our livingroom. This weekend I bought this GORGEOUS silk gunmetal colored fabric with this beautiful texture weaved into it. I can’t wait to get them made and hanging!
Jessica says
I love the mood board! I’m always afraid of such bold colors on my wall, but if you keep the rest of the room simple and light, it won’t take over too much. Love the teal!
FYI, I saw a similar mirror at Michael’s for a few bucks cheaper…about $119 if anyone is interested!

I’ve had my eye on the Malm dresser for quite some time now. I’ve even considered getting it for general storage in our office because it’s so low profile. Love the teal, orange, and grey color scheme. I hope this mood board gets to make a real life appearance in your new casa!
mike @ the lil house that could says
that lamp is sweeeeeeet!
Lindsey d. says
Love the colors and the bed, but I have to say that particular dresser (the MALM) screams Ikea…. and not in any good way. This mood board would jump up a notch with a dresser like the awesome mid-century modern one your re-did for the baby.
Carol N. says
Wow, that bold color is a-maze-ing! I have deep saturated colors on my walls right now and am wanting to go with the more neutral. I go through cycles like that though…at least paint is inexpensive and I do keep the big pieces neutral enough so changing accessories or moving them between rooms works to change things up.

My husband really needs to stop reading new posts before me. He is surpassing my YHL obsession. But anywho, I love that bedding and it was one of my West Elm choices, but I really love all of the bedding they have out lately. Though the organic factor is swaying me…
And the husband probably doesn’t remember this, but we were eyeing up the turquoise version of the C&B lamp for our family room!
Jennifer says
I found almost that EXACT mirror at Homegoods for $29, although it was a bronze-y brown, so I spraypainted it white. It’s currently leaning on my mantel over my fireplace…
Laura says
I love your current style (soft and calming colors with a breezy feel), but I do think it would be really fun to see you guys play around with some new patterns and hues. I can’t wait to see what new decor the new place has in store!
By the way, did you ever have any luck locating the mirror
of your dreams from West Elm? I would love to see it worked into the new house!!!
YoungHouseLove says
Nope no luck at all sadly. We might just have to attempt to DIY one…

I love the pop of orange!

I love that you are doing bold colors! I love bold colors so I like that you guys are going there instead of neutral!
Cait @ Hernando House says
I like this mood board :) We recently used the Malm nightstand in our guest room and I love it! We would probably have gotten the dresser too, if we didn’t have another one from my childhood room.
Amy says
love the board and that teal is awesome. I agree that I would love to see this come to life in a real bedroom! The only thing that seems out of place to me is the Ikea dresser. Maybe with some extra details (pretty knobs?), it might look better, but it looks a little cheap as is. Also, love that bedding, as I’m currently looking for something for my guest bedroom, but I was bummed to see they’re already out of the Full/Queen duvet. Hopefully they’ll get more stock!
Miranda says
I like the teal, brown, white and gray. I’d have probably picked a different popper color… maybe coral or lavender. Mirror is okay. Whole thing is certainly striking, but I don’t know…I’m one of those people who has something against straight lines, so it seems literally too edgy for me. Think I’d have a hard time relaxing with the lights on in there because the room seems very energetic. Guess that’s why we all get to wax our own way…
Anna says
Love the color choices and warm tones!
Meghan says
Similar duvet, lots cheaper. Here it is in my bedroom.

I’m loving orange and teal right now. I found a fabulous orange fabric with just little pops of teal and used it to make some storage bins and custom lamp shades in my recent bedroom makeover. Only difference is we had pale seafoam walls. Either way, I love what it does!

I’m totally into your current style, all the whites and creams and tans with all kinds of textures… it’s just what I *love*. But going for new colours sounds fun :)
Mike @HA says
That’s a great dark turquoise! You guys are so moody, I mean good at making mood boards :)
Kyley says
I feel like teal must be the “it” color this year. I’m a picture framer, so I’m seeing it pop up in lots of art that comes in the door….as well as mat/frame choices.
Not to mention when I get requests for paintings done by my painting ponies EVERYONE seems to want teal (and pink and white)….weird how that happens. The funny thing is most people probably don’t realize they are being drawn to a color because they are seeing it everywhere.
oh and I have a dresser just like that in my bedroom. love it. mine came from Dane Decor and was a hand-me-down from an uncle.
anyway hope you get to work on your dream room soon!! fingers crossed you get a buyer on your house! :)
Tami says
Ok, that is just weird. If I didn’t know better- I’d say you were stalking me and my friends.
I have two friends that I (3-way) email with a few times a week (we all live in different parts of the country). Not two hours ago, we had a full re-make our one of my friend’s guest rooms: dark teal walls, platinum bedding (from west elm no less), white furnishings, with pops of orange for accent. .
Maybe I should think about it a different way though- maybe we were channeling YOU! :)

Lately I have really been embracing the layering of texture and pattern. It probably helped that I went to a black/white/grey/gold color scheme that makes mixing patterns MUCH easier. My living room/dining area/kitchen makeover is the most recent beneficiary…one day I’ll completley finish and take photos!
I never really had the matchy matchy going on, but there was less cohesion in my mish mash of items before. If that makes any sense…lol!
Lacey says
I almost bought that exact same duvet! I went to West Elm to purchase it and they had none in stock & didn’t think they were getting anymore in! I was so bummed!
Elizabeth says
Also…I think that color scheme may demand an appearance by your salt lamp.
Kelly says
We’ve got that dresser! We picked it to go with some vintage mid-century modern nightstands we got for a steal. Unfortunately, the dresser didn’t come with all the hardware needed for assembly, and we didn’t realize until after our receipt was misplaced (this has an upside – I’ve got a better filing system now :). The screws that we found to fit it are like $13 a piece, but we did make it work. What I’m getting at is – check your box!
Keri says
I love the teal and orange together! So pretty and fresh!!
Jasmine @ Eat Move Write says
I love the curtains and bedding. They seem to be the inverse of each other almost – so cool. I love the grays, whites, and browns mixed togheter.
JULIE G says
Oh my gosh. I. Can. Not. Believe. It! I am picking up that exact dresser tonight from a Craigs List seller (1/2 off)!!! It’s going in my office which also serves as my husband’s “dressing room” because I thought the style went a little better with my desk in lieu of the antique dresser that’s in there now. Love the mood board!
Laura says
My husband and I are in the process of decorating our bedroom. We, too, considered hanging a mirror on the wall behind the bed, but were concerned that if something suddenly went wrong that it could fall on us while we are asleep. Since it’s a heavy item we know to hang it on a stud, etc. but that “what if” factor swayed us away from the idea. Do you all have any thoughts about hanging something heavy over the bed from a safety perspective?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Laura,
We always use heavy duty anchors to hang heavy items and tug on them to make sure they’re not going anywhere. No problems so far!

This colors make me so happy! I love that bold teal color, offset with a bright white and dark wood. It’s just heavenly. I hope you pull it off in the new house, and I for one can’t wait to see it.
Kelly says
I love this! I’ve seen lamps like the ones posted above everywhere and I’m dying to snatch a pair and incorporate into our home.
BTW – I am truly addicted to your blog. I have checked your blog at least 25 times today waiting for your new post, even stopping major projects at work to check to see if it was up. Do you offer rehab for blog reading addicts like myself?! :)

Love the mood board! My husband and I are getting that exact bed frame for our bedroom, but for a completely different look! I love that a piece of furniture can go with so many styles depending on how you accent it with other items in the room. And I’m with another commenter on the dresser…it looks a little too like college and not like stylish adult!
liz @ bon temps beignet says
You will LOVE a dark master bedroom. We painted our’s Belgium Sweet (Behr I think) and used the white faux wood blinds from HD with white bedding and curtains. It is soo cozy.

Beautiful, beautiful room. I, too, fell in love with the west elm duvet when I saw it online and in the catalogue, but when I saw it in person it was a bit disappointing. The metallic luster it has in the pictures just look like your dull average grey in the store.
Tara @ Tara Being Tara says
Some food for thought…
Be careful with the dark teal color! Our bedroom is that color (painted by the previous owner) and while we love it during the day, it is SO dark at night and really feels un-comfy. We’re going to paint it a few shades lighter to temper that.
And… we got our bed that definitely has presence from Overstock.com. We are SO happy with it (and the matching dressers we got) and it was really affordable!
Catherine says
This is my absolute favorite mood board! I love it–the saturated teal walls, the patterns, the pops of orange–everything!
(PS I’ve been trying my hand at room collages lately. My Photoshop skills are pathetic compared to yours, but I’m having fun. Feel free to pop by and check ’em out.)
Sarah says
I’ve been using a lot of navy: to temper the red and gold in our living room, and with a bit of camel to freshen up our boring white and brown bedroom.
Kirsty says
I love the new mood board! New house, new colours right!? It’s all part of the fun. The hubby and I are loving blues, whites and neutrals at our place but we’re starting to get braver with our colour choices too. I’m loving the teal walls, the curtains and the bed…I would love to see it all come together in your new place!!
Christine says
Wow! You guys really are embracing colour! I love it. I’ve been eying up that IKEA bed and can’t wait to potentially see it in your new room.
And how sweet are you guys to leave your existing bed in it’s little nook. Whoever ends up buying your house is going to be very, very happy!
Najlee says
Love the colors! I’m totally obsessed with this blog. You guys are great inspiration:)
Stacey says
Woohoo…lookee all that color!!! You guys really are thinking of switching thing up a bit in the new place…I like it!
I’m getting ready to pull the trigger on my bedroom revamp which has a similar color palette. I thought I was set on Behr’s “Atmospheric” for the walls, but recently I’ve been thinking I might want something more saturated. I have white trim, medium pine floors and a pecan stained bedroom set (i’m stuck w/ that). I’m going to accent w/ white, dk. brown and a golden yellow since there are pops of it in my bedding. I’m eyeing the Ikea Knappa pendant and am still hunting for the perfect curtains. I’d love to get it done before the holidays, but who knows…
Jami @ Renovation Adventure says
You should definitely go bold with your color – we did the same thing in our new bedroom and love how it turned out! Painted it a beautiful blue with Running Water by Behr and balanced it out with a lot of white (trim, bedding, window treatments, etc) and light wood (floor & furniture).
Here’s a picture of our color scheme (we’re still unpacking so haven’t posted furnished photos yet):

I have an orange and teal nursery, bathroom, and kids’ room… so I of course approve of your color palette! White furniture looks great against teal walls, and dark brown helps to tone the bold rich color down a bit so it’s not all you see in the room. I’m glad you are embracing more color! I personally am not a fan of tone on tone or white EVERYTHING, so I am super excited to see what your future bedroom will look like! I love bold paint on the walls! Not that my walls are all teal and turquoise or anything *cough cough*
Sadie says
Love the mirror! I’ve been obsessing over a similar one one to go above the bed in our guest bedroom. This is the bedding I’d buy for the room: http://www.crateandbarrel.com/bed-and-bath/all-decorative-bedding/marimekko-tamburiini-full-queen-duvet-cover/s335323. Our walls are a really, really dark gray. Your idea with a pop of orange is great. I might steal that for this fantasy dream guest bedroom of mine :) Do you envision a night stand on either side for symmetry and balance or just one?
YoungHouseLove says
We always like two side tables and lamps for balance if there’s space.

Wow!!! I saw that mirror at Z Gallerie on Saturday at my local mall and actually thought of you guys. Love it!

Teal walls with those curtains? YES YES YES! I love it! It seems uber gender neutral so its great that both you and John are on board with it =)

That is gonna be one nice bedroom! I love that you’re going in such a different direction this time!
By the way, I have that bed and thought I would love it, but the sad truth is, I don’t. I thought a four-poster would feel much cozier than it actually does (at least to me). However, when I bought it it only came in yellow and my dad painted it chocolate brown, and I like it soooo much better in white (don’t tell my dad :D), so maybe I’ll repaint and see how I like it then.
Lisa says
I love the bedding! I also love the teal. Do you plan to use it on all the walls? What would your ceiling color be? You are very daring to go so dark. Can’t wait to see it.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Lisa,
Well, don’t call us daring yet… it’s just what we’re loving now- who knows if we’ll have the guts to actually do it when we move! We would paint all the walks that color and slide about three shades lighter on the swatch and paint the ceiling that color (so it feels cohesive yet lighter but not too stark).

I have been dreaming BIG time, we are building our “we can stay here for 20 years house”….we move in this week end and I have decorated that house about 20 different ways in my head.
I am excited to see what you do with your next house…because we have a very open floor plan…and little ones…so your decor may have to become more kid friendly as Clara gets more mobile:) yikes.
