So a few folks have asked for a little post over here about my “maternity style” which makes me laugh because I’m not a stylish prego gal: I just want my maternity clothes cheap, durable, and comfortable. I’m one of those moms with dog hair on my shirt and half of a sandwich inexplicably stuck to the back of my leg whether I’m pregnant or not (as a sidenote, I’m very popular with both Burger and Clara for exactly this reason).
But I thought I’d humor you guys and just share more of a quick recap about how I get through being pregnant without spending an arm and a leg in the hopes that perhaps someone else out there will benefit from my love of Old Navy maternity jeans and big earrings to distract from my puffy pregnant face. So here’s my must-have pregnancy clothing list:
1. Old Navy maternity jeans. I like the full belly panel ones, because they just make my bump feel more supported (it’s a comfort thing). For my pregnancy with Clara I bought one pair that took me all the way through my pregnancy (from about 14 weeks to delivery day). Those babies stretch. So far with this pregnancy I’ve had one pair as well (I sprung for a new pair so they wouldn’t be stretched out) and they’re doing me right again. So I think it’s safe to say that they’re my favorite budget-friendly maternity solution.
2. A bra extender. This is a weird one, but later on in my pregnancy with Clara I learned that Target sold these little extender tabs that can be hooked right onto your bra hooks (they sell them with 2 eye-hooks or 3 of them, near the gel shoe inserts and stockings) and they make your bra a little wider around the ribs. I’m not sure about you guys, but my ribs expand like crazy when I’m pregnant, so it’s a super easy fix to allow my bras to work throughout pregnancy, and then I can pop the extenders off and wear them normally again when my ribs go back to where they belong (assuming they do this time… it took about 6 months after having Clara but they did last time).
3. Various stretchy shirts. This is an obvious one, but I love cotton because it’s comfortable and I’m generally a fan of v-necks (short girls with short necks hear my cry, v-necks are elongation devices!). So I have a bunch in a few colors (although the black ones are clearly my favorite). Some of them are made in the maternity department at Target or Old Navy, but many of them are just larger sizes from the regular departments at those two stores (or occasionally from the Gap or Banana clearance rack).
4. Big ol’ earrings. These are a favorite when I’m pregnant or not, but they seem especially comforting when I’m in the last trimester and my face puffs up and I want something (anything) to hide behind. A nice big and colorful pair of earrings might not be a full-on masquerade ball mask (which would probably hide more of the puff) but they make me feel a little less like people are staring at my puffiness or my tired eyes and a little more like they’re doing me a solid by whispering “don’t look there, LOOK HERE! Ooh yes, SHINNNNY! Keep your eyes on the EARRINGS!”
5. A simple pair of slip on flats. This pregnancy my staples have been some cute little leopard flats by Sam Edelman that I found at DSW for $39 a few months before I even got pregnant. And with Clara they were some cute little black patent leather flats by Steve Madden. Otherwise I’m tempted to flip and flap my way around town in flip-flops all the time, which feels a little bit weird (especially when it’s winter). So having some cute little go-to flats make me feel like I’m a little more pulled together, even if I do unknowingly have a hunk of granola bar stuck to the back of my arm. Oh but when I’m on my feet all day it’s nice to have some added arch support, so I might go for Puma sneakers if we’re running around all day or if we’re on-site at the showhouse (which is kind of a mud pit) for example.
Here are some old bump photos from when I was carrying Clara, and all the jeans were that very same Old Navy pair I mentioned. All of the shirts were from Old Navy or Target from the not-maternity section (they were just larger and stretchy) except for the last one with the dots (which was from the Banana Outlet, but also from their non-maternity section). Oh and that pink dress was from Target, but was a maternity dress. It’s nice to have one or two of those just for events where jeans wouldn’t be the best call. They can actually be crazy comfy like a big ol’ muumuu.
I’m probably forgetting ten million things, but I thought those were some basic things that help me get through being pregnant without dumping tons of money into clothes that I’ll only get to wear for a few more months while bowing to the porcelain throne (yes, that’s still happening, but this little bun of ours is so darn cute and wiggly that I can’t even be mad). What about you guys. What do you love when you’re prego? Do you have any favorite low-budget “cheater” finds (like bra extenders instead of buying all new bras)?

I wore a pair of ON maternity jeans too, full panel, and LOVED them. Mine did not fall down as I got bigger so you will probably be fine! I know you breastfed, so one suggestion if your old nursing bras are worn. With my first baby (born in Aug 2009) I used Gilligan and O’Malley’s no-underwire comfy nursing bras. They were great, but the band under your breast got all mangled from washing – twisty and didn’t stay smooth. When I had my son in March of this year, I needed new ones and Target now sells a different brand by Stella. They are a little more money $24 a piece, but they were SOOOOO worth it. More comfortable material and straps and they lasted through many washings. Highly recommend. Oh, and I puffed out big time with my daughter (1st pregnancy) but with my son this year I gained 15 lbs less and did not puff out. Everyone said it was the girl v boy thing. Who knows. You look great – no puffiness detected here :-) Hope things continue to go well, you have an adorable family.

Hey I have that exact same black and white striped shirt! I was pregnant during the summertime so I was able to wear flip flops everyday along with some black goucho pants and I had a couple pair of shorts too. I only had a few maternity shirts (some from Goowill but came from Two Peas, Gap, Target) which were still the fitted type and the rest were just normal shirts just a little longer. I did splurge on one pair of Gap maternity khaki’s to wear to work every day (I was a cake decorator then) which were the best ever! I ended up giving them to my friend to wear after I had my girl and she was due with hers a few months later. No need to spend a fortune on wearing clothes you will only wear 4-5 months, and in my case 2-3 since my girl was a preemie!
em says
My tip is avoid maternity underwear! They are completely uneccessary and annoying- regular underwear just goes under the bump and does not roll down! I did have a problem with pants and jeans coming down. Toward the end of my pregnancies, I just wore dress and skirts all the time.
Young House Life says
Oh yeah, I wear regular underwear! Is it weird that I didn’t even know maternity underwear exists?! Does it go over your bump?

I couldn’t really do the full panel pants until the last month or two (if it fit my butt, it didn’t fit my waist/belly and vice versa) so I had some low cut non maternity pants that I wore a lot. I also got the BeBand and long camis from target to make sure my belly wasn’t peeking out.
I got a lot of larger V neck shirts that I could wear under sweaters and just wear open cardigans to dress it up for work. Other than work I was way into yoga pants. There are those kind that fold over so I just wore those and ended up not folding them over when I got pretty big.
I mostly tried to purchase things that I knew I would be able to wear post pregnancy and when I was smaller, but the jeans and another pair of pants are a must have.

I’m at 31 weeks and all but 2 of my maternity pieces came from Old Navy. Sign up for their emails & never pay full price again! I have the same theory as you but use scarves instead of earrings to dress up my rotation of tanks & tees over non-maternity cardigans. Kind of proud of myself for how far I’ve made a few items reach – although I’ll be ready to say adios to all of them when our baby comes. I miss the variety from my old wardrobe!
Kati says
Sherry, did you take any bump-in-progress shots? I luuuuuuuuuurve your Clara pregnancy grid.

I’m just 14 weeks with my first, but these tips are so helpful! I just ordered a bra extender. My bras got too uncomfortable so I ordered a coobie bra early on and have worn it everyday since. It’s probably only good for us small chested women (I’m a small B normally, think I’m a big B now) but it’s awesome. It’s essentially an over the head stretchy bra that has a little padding. I love it.
Mary Beth says
Elizabeth, tell me more about this bra and where to get it! It sounds like I’m in the exact same situation – only 14 weeks, not terribly large chested but super uncomfortable in my current bra!
Emily says
Did you say braS?? Meaning you bought another one? Congratulations!
Young House Life says
Haha, oh yes, as of around the middle of last year I bought another one. I can’t resist a sale… haha!

For work I bought two black full panel pencil skirts in two sizes on sale at Motherhood (so they would last all the way through) and tons of wrap dresses. Non wrap dresses were always hit-and-miss. My Mom bought me an awesome pair of dark full panel jeans from motherhood in a petite size that I was able to wear with flats, I lived in those for 9 months. And it helped to buy regular tops in larger sizes as well as real maternity tops since it’s always more flattering when clothes aren’t super baggy. Taht way I was able to transition as I grew.
I always kept on top of sales at Pea in the Pod as well for work clothes. They are more expensive, but aren’t too bad on sale and it’s nice to actually feel well dressed when you’re so huge.
Emily F. says
I got out my old pants from last pregnancy (2 pairs of jeans, one pair of work pants) and they fit terribly this time! They were way short, even flats looked silly, and the jeans had horrible fold lines on the sides. So I’m stretching my pre-preg stuff with a beband and occasionally splurging on some Gap skinny jeans and work pants when a good coupon code comes up and have been able to use some rewards from my credit card! I also hit the jackpot on a few new (to me) things on Craigslist.
I also hit the Kohls’ clearance rack. I got a pair of shorts, a short sleeve top, and a maternity tankini top all for $9! I always look for sales on the rouched-side tops. I feel like those are the most comfortable and flattering for me.
This is likely my last pregnancy so I’ll be Craigslisting/consigning/EBaying my maternity clothes when I’m done.
Joules (from Pocketful of Joules) says
I loved the “favorite” pants from Gap’s maternity section — they’re just a pair of PERFECT black trousers that are totally appropriate for work and feel like PJ’s. Also, I stocked up on the preggo tank tops from Target and STILL wear them as layering pieces. OH and my favorite tip is statement necklaces — they draw the eye away from the belly/swollen face AND you can still wear them after you have the baby!
Daniela says
I made it through my pregnancies buying gently-used clothes from consignment stores. My favorite one likes to carry Old Navy, Gap, Motherhood, etc., so I was able to get cute maternity clothes at a fraction of the price. Once I was able to get into regular clothes I took my clothes to that same consignment store and I use the credit from the sales to buy clothes for the baby (since I am done spawning) :)
Martha says
That is brilliant!
sue says
I had an almost pathological aversion to spending much money on maternity clothes, and yet I wanted to look cute! :-) I did spring for a pair of Old Navy maternity jeans, and I agree, they are the bomb. And I loved the v-neck maternity tee I got at Target. Besides those items, I had a lot of fun trolling Goodwills and thrift stores for cheap maternity items or regular items that would work for the growing bump. I loved empire waisted shirts, or cute little dresses that were probably originally from the juniors department, but that I could wear with jeans or leggings.
Penny Lynn says
Gurl it’s all about the MAXI dress!! Old Navy had some on clearance in the maternity secion in Va Beach, and I love love lurve them because they have that stretchy elastic band across the top, and they aren’t the v neck or cris-cross style that most maxis are. I like v neck shirts but not dresses. Plus the straps unbutton so you can remove them completely, or just unbutton the front to nurse. I like to wear them with a shrug and a skinny belt, super cute! (and I bought it when I wasn’t even prego before I had a reduction because they are so stretchy…so they are good anytime, prego or not!!!) LOVE!!!

Haha, I love it!

Thanks for the post! I’ve have a long torso so I definitely can’t just do stretchy shirts, but I have every color of Old Navy’s maternity tanks and wear those with open cardigans nearly every day. Great way to not spend too much money and use cardigans that I already have!
Sara D says
Gap Maternity has been my best friend. While all of Richmond’s Gaps are super lame and refuse to carry the maternity line, the store in Arkansas where my parent’s live is a gold mine! I got jeans from there for only $20 and many other things. I’ve scored many tanks tops and t-shirts from that section for $2-$4 each and over Christmas I even got a dress that will be cute to wear after my little guy arrives in a month as I’m trying to lose the baby weight for $4. Seriously check out Gap especially when they have extra %s off on the sale section.
I also wear long normal size cardigans seeing that most of the things I’ve found and are wearing are short sleeve.
Give in Mama’s! Buy the pregnancy jeans (I love/live in both my Gap and Old Navy pairs) . They are ridiculously comfortable and sure as heck beats the bella band over your old jeans. Don’t wait!
MrsBrownie says
Full panel maternity pants weren’t all that great for me but I live in Hawaii – warm and humid year round! I found that anything that sat right below my tummy and could be worn with a simple tank top or tshirt was just right. As few layers as possible!
I found jersey maxi skirts/dresses to be crazy comfortable. Plus most of them were an excellent fit postpartum when you need some fairly forgiving clothes the most!
Also, for the days I really cannot stand wearing a bra or the super-wide straps of a maternity bra just won’t cut it under a cute sundress, I use my LilyPadz.
Debbie says
The best thing I did in my pregnancy was buy two pairs of jeans. One size bigger than normal, and later two sizes bigger. By the time I was really huge I could still wear them with a little hair elastic strung through to hold them together. It was nice not wearing maternity clothes even when I was pretty pregnant but it was even nicer wearing the bigger sizes in the first few weeks postpartum. How lovely it felt to wear something with a button!
Katie says
Hey Sherry! Not sure if someone else has already posted this but I had a son last June (here in Richmond) and actually found H&M in Short Pump to be really helpful- a bit more stylish than Target and in most cases had better prices. Its a small section but I frequented it often. Love watching the barnacle grow :)
Nicole says
Ah, a bra extender! I’m pg with #2 and even knew they made them, but it just didn’t click that they would solve my problem- genius!
P.S: I’m sorry you are still so sick. I was extremely ill this time around too, but luckily it ended around 15 weeks. It is the absolute worse, and I really hope you feel better soon!

I’m just 13 weeks right now with our first little jumping bean and I’m SO glad to see this post and everyone’s comments. :) My goal is to try and purchase stuff as minimally as possible (I’m hoping one or two jeans, some maxi skirts and tanks will get me through til July) and luckily one of my cousins is giving me her maternity stuff. (Best cousin ever.) So far I can still wear all my regular clothes. I loved the tip about the bra extenders, but I know I’m going to have to purchase one or two because my cups are already almost ‘runneth over’ haha. So sorry to hear you’re still getting sick Sherry! I’ll keep sending you happy thoughts that it’ll fade away!

I too found Old Navy with their discounts, coupons and credit card points to be great for maternity clothes. Plus the Gap Pure Body t shirts are amazing. I will continue to wear them post baby, really nice quality.
Thank you so much for saying that it took your ribs so long to go back down! I’m 6 weeks postpartum and have been wondering if it’s ever going to happen. Even went out and got a clearance Old Navy winter jacket because my pre prego ones are killing me..must be able to breath and move my arms!

I purchased most of my maternity wardrobe at JCPenney and Target. I have a professional job, so I wore a lot of dresses and I think I had two pair of maternity dress pants. I bought some maternity shirts and others in a larger “regular” size.
I delivered in July and I loved wearing Maxi dresses. They were “regular”-sized and I was able to wear them after our son was born.
As far as the bra thing, um… no extender could have helped me! I went through three sizes during pregnancy and immediately following.
My feet grew by one size and they never went back. At least I had an excuse to shop for shoes. I splurged on Mephisto sandals during my pregnancy and I highly recommend them. I even wore them to work sometimes.
Courtney says
I’ve never tried Old Navy maternity, but I think I’ll check it out. I’ve spent so much time pregnant and nursing in the past 6 years that I can’t wear regular bras. I found wonderful, stylish bras from a company called Hot Milk. Zulily has their stuff on sale occasionally, and it beats every other brand I’ve tried. I like that they don’t make me feel frumpy, lol.
Audrey says
LOOOOVE Old Navy maternity jeans, I lived in them with my first. However, with my second child I was gifted a pair of regular black leggings from H&M and I didn’t want to take them off! I did a lot of wrap dresses and leggings in my last tri because it was a lot easier for me since my bump literally looked like a missile or the Hindenburg. The jean-shirt combo just didn’t work.
Alaina Jalosky says
Loved Old Navy stuff with my first 2 pregnancies, but with #3 (who just arrived 3 weeks early on 12/27/13!) most of it just didn’t fit the same. Also, good grief, the calf-swelling started so early! Rock star jeggings just should never have been on my radar. Unfortunately they were and caused much swearing and tears trying to yank them on after week 24 or so. My favorite place this time was H&M. The maternity jeans are amazing and not terribly priced–with a coupon I got 2 pairs for less than $70. They have real waistband look, but with this amazing thick, super soft full panel. Heaven! I am still wearing them and love how the panel kind of smooths out the post partum tummy area. I may never give them up, even if baby #4 doesn’t happen. Their maternity tee shirts are great prices ($9.95-$12.95 for solid colors) and I loved their tanks—they were crazy long, and I got some online in their clearance for $5/each, even though full price wasn’t bad at $9.95. Wish I would have known about their maternity line before my 3rd trimester with my 3rd baby, though. As far as utilizing regular clothes, I wore previously knee-length dresses as tunics over leggings or skinny jeans, especially in my 2nd trimester.

My friend suggested Sea-Band wristbands for the sickness. You might have to ask the pharmacist, if it is behind the counter. Here is a link from Walgreens to give you an idea…http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/sea-band-wristband/ID=prod2662944-product

I struggled with long-term all-day-sickness, and controlling my diet helped enormously. I cut out all sugar (even smoothies or other sweet-tasting food), all dairy except cheese, refined flours, peanuts, and any fatty meats. It worked very well – I was still sick but could function. Also, I used Seabands on my wrists-they are an accupressure band for nausea . They at least took the edge off.
As for maternity clothes, I found that Victoria’s Secret Body by Victoria wireless bras are amazing. No underwire, but soft and full coverage. Costco’s Kirklands brand makes twin packs of non-maternity camis that are amazing. I grew out of all my maternity shirts by 30 weeks but those worked all the way to the end!
Young House Life says
Thanks Leah! I’ve tried diet control (all sorts of restrictions, overlapping, and separately) and have also tried Seabands to no avail! So nice that they worked for you though, you lucky dog! Haha!

I loved my Motherhood Maternity full panel leggings. They were 2 for $25 at the outlet in Williamsburg. I would wear them all day and even sleep in them sometimes. Three months after having the baby, I still wear them to help suction in that last little bit of baby belly… and no, the elastic-ey part never stretched out. I also just bought nursing bras when my cups began to spill over (I went from a B to a DD… AH!), so that way I wouldn’t have to buy new bras when the baby came.
Christie says
I’m only in my second tri and just started needing to wear maternity stuff. I have been having great luck at Goodwill, mine has a maternity section. I only need a few colder weather tops for now and didn’t feel like spending a ton of money since I’m due in the summer I won’t get a ton of wear out of them. I’m hoping my existing summer wardrobe of maxi-dresses and tunics will work but I have a feeling I’m gonna get big because I have a very short torso.
Frannie says
That belly is so cute!
My favorite thing from pregnancy- and even now- are the long and lean tanks from Target and Old Navy. I wore them under EVERYTHING. They are tight enough that they keep their shape around your belly, and feel a little supportive. I wore them under t-shirts too, just to smooth out the belly. The length makes them perfect for covering belly bands, or unzipped pants :)
Stephanie says
I agree that Old Navy maternity jeans, full panel, are the best. I am also REALLY loving Old Navy black low rise maternity leggings, as well as Gap’s. They are so super comfy. I am pretty sure I will live in them after my baby is born in April!

Ahhhh, a girl after my own heart! I’m due in June (Winter for us Aussies) and plan to live in leggings and tunic tops. Our Winters are so mild!

Great tips everyone. The product I wish someone had told me about when pregnant is an extension for your jacket that zips in via an adapter. No need to buy an extra maternity jacket. Great for third trimester belly-coverage and for baby-wearing in the wintertime (put baby in Ergo or MobyWrap, the extension keeps them toasty and happy under your coat). This is the company (no affiliates, I am just a big fan), they ship from Europe, but have an English website: http://www.mamamotion.com/winterkumja.html

Love your bump and your pregnant mama style! With my first two, I relief heavily on Target and Old Navy. But with this baby, I’ve LOVED ordering from H&M maternity online! And I JUST got relief from my nausea a few weeks ago, around 24 weeks. Nothing worked for me and I tried it all: SeaBands, crystallized ginger, diet modifications, homeopathic remedies. I was on Zofran until about 4 weeks ago. I’m so sorry you’re suffering, I know that feeling all too well. Hope you get relief soon!

In my last pregnancy I did much the same as you. Just got a pair of jeans and did what I could with my normal clothes. Which is how my love of dresses started because they are so comfy and when it’s colder out you can just slip on leggings or tights!
Unfortunately, this time around I’m only at 10 weeks and I’m the size I was 3-4 months in with my daughter so….we got a couple bigger dresses and I’m calling it good! I’m not very excited to be the most pregnant during the hot summer (July 14th!) but I’m very excited to have another baby! I will admit I’m going to love having a summer baby when it comes to birthdays!

I’m 36.5 weeks pregnant in QLD Australia (very very hot) so have lived/am living in max dresses. They were pretty much my wardrobe staple before so I just added a few and I’ll be wearing them after bub too.
I agree with the jeans though. I good pair of maternity jeans is a lifesaver. I wish you could get away with wearing them all the time!

I don’t think my ribs got any bigger during pregnancy, but my breasts sure did and then stayed that way for at least 6 months after birth while my son was exclusively breastfeeding. I bought a bigger bra when I was pregnant, but if I had it to do over, I would skip that and just buy a couple of nursing bras which you can wear during pregnancy and will need as long as you nurse. I need to have at least 2-3 nursing bras because they tend to get milk leaked or dripped onto them. Of course, you can sometimes wear a nursing top and no bra if it has enough support for you.
Sherry – a nursing bra must bring your total bra collection up to at least 3, right???

Haha, I actually just use a cloth sporty bra (lifting and stuff is pretty easy) since I tried a nursing bra and it kept unsnapping randomly whenever I bent or moved. It was kind of funny how much I panicked!

I just switched to nursing bras as soon as my regular ones didn’t fit. The best place I’ve bought any nursing bra was Burlington Coat Factory. Clearance or not- BEST PRICES.
And I bought two pairs of JcPenny maternity pants when they were on sale Buy one, get on for a dollar. Both were full panel but the one pair’s panel was completely stretchy material and didn’t dig in or have a line over my belly and was very supportive.
I carry completely out front, and tried a maternity support band from Motherhood Maternity ($30 I think). Worth. Every. Penny. My belly was so heavy, it really made the last two months more comfortable.
