This week has been all about cleaning and organizing, so it’s only fair that I take this opportunity to own up to the most unclean, unorganized space in our house (perhaps ever in our whole lives). The horror lies behind this door, in my basement workshop:
Just like our first house, we have a separate entry basement that you access from a door in the back yard. Except in this house, I’ve avoided showing this space the entire 16 months that we’ve lived here. Yes, it has been kept completely off camera and video – which is almost unheard of for over-sharers like us. Why? Because I’m embarrassed to my core about its state. I’ve been meaning to tackle it for a while. But a while has turned into a while longer. So I’m finally forcing myself into action by showing it in all of its glory, er, gory. Feel free to play this video while I hide my face in my hands.
For those who can’t watch the video (or couldn’t take more than the first 15 seconds or so), here’s the mess you missed. Although for some reason it doesn’t look as bad in the pics. The video is the real deal. Haha. It still looks pretty bad though…
As I said on camera, I blame the whole thing on these pallets that the previous owners left in the yard and I dragged inside when making our living room console table last April. I guess the pallet scrap invited me to add other leftover wood to the pile, all awaiting some future time in which it’ll all be “taken care of.”
Well, it hasn’t been taken care of. And instead the mess in one corner gradually made me care less about keeping the rest of it clean. So the whole space has kind of deteriorated into one big cluttered, dirty, slobfest.
So here’s my vow to clean and organize the workshop. It won’t take a day, or even a week, but I’m vowing to make a plan, put it into action, and keep you guys posted. After all, it’s a pretty useful space for us – mainly as storage (tools, yard stuff, etc) and it also makes a great work space. But it hasn’t been serving either function very well with all of this junk in my way.
Here’s my rough plan of attack (feel free to tackle a garage, basement, or attic right along with me if you’d like):
- Pare down and organize my scrap pile: I like having spare wood around, but not this much. I’ve been trying to figure out a better solution than just throwing it away, but haven’t settled on one yet (a lot is too small to sell or donate according to the calls I’ve made – so maybe I’ll freecycle what I don’t think I’ll need for future projects).
- Take everything out and clean things from top to bottom: Part of the reason the floor and workbench are covered in a confetti of sawdust is that it’s hard to sweep around all of this stuff. I figure if I get everything out, I’ll have no excuse. Plus it makes the next step easier.
- Bring back in only what I need: And hopefully organize it as it all comes back in, grouping like items and placing things in zones that actually make sense to keep things functional.
- Sell / donate / dispose of what’s not needed: We’re guessing there will be a fair amount of items leaving for good. And of course if we craigslist or freecycle anything we’ll post the link for any interested locals.
By the end of it all I’m not looking to have some giant, decorated makeover – just a clean workable room that functions for all the building and staining and spraying and sawing and storing that we’d love to use it for. Though I wouldn’t hate it if it turned into a little bit of a man cave. Just sayin’…
Okay, now make me feel better. Who else has (or at least had) a shamefully messy space in their house? This is a no judgement zone. At least I hope it is. If not, I’m sure I’m getting crazy judged right now. Yikes.

My spare room. I have a three bedroom condo. I sleep in the master bedroom & the smaller of two other bedrooms is my home office. The third bedroom is the spare room aka the room of doom. It’s beyond awful but I’m very slowly working on getting cleared out. Once I get it cleared out I plan to set up a travel section with tables where I store all my travel gear & can pack for trips, a craft/gift wrapping section where I can sew & wrap gifts as well as store the craft & gift wrapping supplies & of course the gifts. I’m also planning on storing my purses, bags & backpacks in there as well as having some free standing shelving at one end that will function as a walk in pantry which means I’ll probably end up storing the vacuum, carpet cleaner & cleaning supplies in there as well.

Have you guys seen the episode of FRIENDS with Monica’s secret junk closet? I always call our spare bedroom my Monica closet, but all these comments make me glad to know I’m not alone. I wonder if people like Martha Stewart and Nate Berkus have a Monica closet? The piles of junk are probably styled and color coordinated and lightly misted with essential oils.
YoungHouseLove says
LOL. I have seen that one. The basement is my Monica’s closet.

I wouldn’t organize it in order for it to look better, but just because it will be easier to find stuff. With a toddler, I’m surprised you get anything organized. I recently tossed a bunch of high school and college junk I didn’t even know I still had, because I shoved it aside for years (2 kids, 12 &14).

At least it’s in the basement. Our first place was. 720 foot condo in Boston. No workshop room, but we like refinishing furniture. We sawed, sanded, stained and painted….in our master bedroom, and live in our living room while we got things together. It was insane.

Not as embarrassing as the real slim Sherdog video!
YoungHouseLove says
True dat! (I can say that because it’s still not nearly as bad as “phat”).

I have two places that look like this, one of which is much, much worse! The first is our master bedroom. We live in a mobile home (which was supposed to be temporary housing while we built our new house on this piece of property, but due to financial setbacks has been “temporary” for 15 years now) so there’s no somewhat temperature controlled basement where we can store canned goods and other things that can’t go out in the unheated/uncooled garage. Our bedroom has become the dumping ground for everything that doesn’t fit elsewhere. As soon as I finish remodeling our kitchen (just putting the finishing touches on that in the next couple of weeks) I plan to tackle our bedroom next. I don’t want to take “before” pictures of that project for the same reasons you avoided having any pics of your basement for so long! Can’t wait to get that space turned into a romantic retreat for my husband and me instead of the junk room that it is presently!
The second space is the 28’x28′ pole building/garage that we envisioned as being our workshop when we first moved in. Half of it is packed with building materials that we have purchased over the years (including a bunk of plywood sheathing for the house we WILL be building sometime before we die!). The other half is packed with boxes of our children’s belongings and the three freezers and two refrigerators we need for our meat and dairy goat farm products. As each of our three children has headed off to college and their own living spaces they have boxed up their belongings and stored them out in the garage until they have a place where they can fit all that “stuff”. Two of the three have their own homes now, yet the boxes of their treasures still sit in our garage. This summer I am DETERMINED that I will be moving their stuff to their new homes so I can set up my power tools in that space. Then I can do my building projects no matter what the weather, instead of worrying about rain/snow/wind putting a crimp in my plans!
Brenda says
I remember seeing videos of part of the basement when you built the console table that set off the chain reaction of mess. At least you can actually walk in, though. At one point, our playroom/storage room got so bad you could only walk in a few feet from each door. It took my brother and I a solid month of working on it pretty steadily to get it usable. Good luck!
Ty Lee says
Right now my whole apartment is embarrassing right now. I’ve got a dishwasher in the living room, and boxes stacked to the ceiling. To be fair, I’m getting ready to move… but not until June. I *might* have jumped the gun a little on packing. I’ve also been throwing stuff out, repairing furniture as needed, and separating things out that will be sold at a garage sale.
Walking into my place is a disaster…. did I mention my husband invited people over this weekend? I’m going to try to cram as many of our living room boxes as I can into closets, but there’s really no place for our new dishwasher yet until we’re in our new house… yeah… it’s a little awkward.
Carrie says
My whole house is my shame… After Christmas I jacked my back up to the tune of not being able to do anything for 3 weeks… I got sick of looking at the decorations so i put them on every spare surface of the guest room and shut the door. And it just exploded from there. It’s the room of shame. Then a friend scored 4 boxes of records and they are in the craft room, which is already tiny, waiting for me to go through them. I have magazines piled in my bedroom, and a box that still needs unpacked- 5 months after moving back in. People keep giving me stuff (ya know- like birthday presents, nice things) and because I don’t feel like finding a home for it at the moment (still having back problems) it just goes into the spare room.
The place is a disaster. No one would know I was type A a year ago. Now I’m just tired and try not to care. Unfortunately I’ve gotten a little too good at not caring.
Anne says
Do me a favour and put captions on. I love how – this is just my reading – calls your workshop “palace scrap wood”. and later on in the vid it gets rather creepy: forward to 1:36. ;D
Anyhow, John, it’s not thaaaaat bad. I’ve seen worse in my own basement, believe me. It takes time to sort it out and energy to keep it organized. But it’s so rewarding. You’re gonna love that place and will be itching for some more diy!
YoungHouseLove says
LOL – “palace scrap wood.” It kind of has a ring to it…

Nadine says
Ha. Proof that you’re human. I have not one, but at least two rooms, not basement, that are just two big piles of mess…
Susan says
It’s funny that you asked if we had “a zone” that needed organizing. I have a garage that’s a total disaster – picture old furniture, leaves from last fall, overflowing recycling because I have to sort the cans and a tub/crate collection. The dog is afraid to walk through alone if the light’s off. I also have a patio that could easily be used to film a scene in The Jungle Book. And my utility closet is a dumping ground for more than just the mops and brooms. I also typically have to clean off spaces in my craft room before I can craft. I may have a small piling problem. It’s fine. Your week of organization has inspired me though. I’ve organized a couple of drawers and I’m hanging a jewelry rack tonight. Watch out garage and patio – I’m coming for you.
Paige says
When we were growing up our family friends’ Grandpa made us homemade blocks out of scrap wood from his many projects. He had a few standard size/shapes and then each different type of block was painted a different color. We played with them forever.
Jill Stigs says
In preparing for a move at the end of June, I totally went crazy on my garage. All the stuff in the rafters came down, everything came off the built in (huge) shelves. I now have a pile of bins on the garage floor in addition to bikes, lounger and stacks of boxes ready to pack. I can no longer park in there, and while it looks messy the crew will be able to load it all in the truck easily.
Now I have to re-box the Christmas tree that was stored inside under the neighbors stairs (where I kept my decorations). The bins were easy to move to the garage, but I was really lazy with the tree and just busted it down in half and laid it on top of the box. It’s been sitting in the corner of my kitchen for days and days. I have no clue why I am procrastinating so much.

I saw a neat solution for scrap wood on tv (I think?).
Someone had taken an old wooden ladder, 4 feet long or so, and mounted it horizontally on the wall about 3 feet off the ground with the rungs sticking out into the room.
They strengthened one of the sides of the ladder with a 2×4 and bolted that side to the wall. I think they added some 2×4’s to each end and in the center to give it some “legs”, too.
The rungs of the ladder act as dividers of sorts and you can just stand your scrap wood down in between them. It keeps them sorted and upright.
We just moved into a new house, and we’ve got more square footage, but there is NO existing organization in any of the closets or garage. It looks like a bomb went off…everywhere.
1-800-GOT-JUNK will be my new BFF.
Good luck! Can’t wait to see what you two do next :)
YoungHouseLove says
That’s a cools suggestion! And I think we do have an old ladder down there leftover from the previous owners.

My shame is my closet! Though fairly large, it’s a disaster. I keep telling myself I’m gonna tackle it, but I take on other projects instead (like painting the kitchen, or painting my bed). Whew! I’m already starting to feel a load lifted off my chest by talking about it. Can’t imagine what would happen if it actually got organized. Thanks for sharing YHL. Nice to know you are normal, like the rest of us. :)

We each have a space like this at our house. Mine is the guest/craft room. It’s just so easy to throw stuff in there and shut the door!
Husband’s is the garage/shop.
The difference is mine has to get cleaned every time we have guests. His hasn’t been touched in a year except to make the mess worse.
It never ends!

Oh, John. You have endeared yourself me even more with this post. I feel your pain. My basement is so hard to keep under control. It’s so easy to throw stuff down there. Except, we need it to function as Laundry/Workout/Storage/Work Room. So, keeping up with it is hard. This will give you an idea of how bad it was, and it is a HUGE effort to keep clean. This was before we even had our huge scrap pile going on, too.

We actually have THREE places in our house that look like your basement – our basement, our attic and our garage (due to remodeling our house and stashing ~75% of our belongings in those 3 places). I’ve shared in previous comments that I’ve slowly been working on our basement (in 1-2 hour increments over the past month or two) – I’ve cleared so much stuff out and it feels SO good to finally know what we have and put it to use, or get rid of it! Once I finish the basement, it’s onto the attic. Hubby can deal with the garage :)
Thanks for keeping it real! Just take it in stages so it’s not so overwhelming. I’m sure it will look awesome when you’re finished, just like everything else you guys do!
Rebecca says
Workshops are never meant to be clean, they are meant to contain all the parts and pieces which have no other home. I am a organization guru though so I feel an attempt at organization can be made anywhere.
My dad had an overhead board with glass (plastic works too) jars containing screws, nails, things that are best found when seen in his workshop. The jar lids were attached with a screw to the board so the jars screwed off, the lids stayed put.
The mess he wanted to hide he just put on the lower part of his work bench behind some “man” made curtains i.e. he staple gunned some fabric around the edges.
stacie says
My husband’s shed is WAY worse. It has gotten to the point that he can’t even get to his tools, so all of our projects are on hold until he has time to get to it. Unfortunately that means the shed-mess is slowly creeping into our house
:(
Lauren H says
I have a silly question. In my mind, basements are underground and they are usually located underneath the house…but this basement doesn’t look underground at all. Is it just like a separate shed? Where is it located?
YoungHouseLove says
Not silly at all. This basement is just under our master bedroom and the slope of the land means that there’s room for a full sized door (and window) on the side you see me enter, but most of the rest of it underground.
-John
Crystal (theweekendhomemaker.com) says
Our attic is pretty terrible. It looks like we just climb up the pull-down stairs and toss stuff in (probably because that is what we actually do). I’ve been meaning to get up there and organize, which would manifest into a giant yard sale or goodwill trip. Only thing holding me back is that we have reason to believe a raccoon has nested up there – which creeps me out. I guess I need to call animal control first.
Have fun with your project! It’s always nice to have extra storage.
Anne says
Good to know you aren’t perfect! We moved into our 1968 ranch in Chesterfield last May and threw all extras into garage swearing we would have a yardsale in the fall. We just had yardsale and sold and goodwilled most of it. We still need to pull everything out and clean and organize.
Sandra T says
Dear John,
My husband, who is a very busy guy, is constantly in the basement sawing and doing other “manly” things which do not include cleanup. Our basement work space is at least twice the size of yours, and we have lived in our current house for 11 years. Multiply the size of your mess 1000x and you will have ours. There is no shame in your mess, believe me! ;)
Stacy says
Our basement is finished so we don’t have that kind of mess. And since we also don’t have a garage, there isn’t any room to hide big messes.
That said, trust me when I tell you that your basement is nothing compared to my neighbor’s garage. Why am I picking on my neighbor and how do I know the state of their garage? Because they like to leave the doors open sometimes and when the trees have no leaves on them, I get to look at all the mess when I look out my office windows. I’m not talking about scrap piles here and there with other stuff mixed in. Their 2-car garage is filled from floor to ceiling with Lord only knows that.
And of course, since nobody can go into the garage without a hard hat because stuff falls down ( I also know this as I sometimes hear swearing about stuff falling down when I go out to check the mail) any excess crap they collect is now collecting in front of the garage doors, along the sides of the garage, ect.
This is a stark contrast to the former owners of the house where the grass was mowed promptly if it got to be a 1/4-inch taller than what was deemed a acceptable height.
No need to be ashamed, John.

We just did this with our garage. It’s a one car in a little NoVA townhouse, and during our last bathroom renovation, it got so crowded with junk that we ran out of room for the car. We spent a few hours both days one weekend emptying EVERYTHING out, cleaning, and reorganizing. My husband is a pack rat and I am a ruthless thrower outer, so I think we had a healthy balance for weeding out the junk. It was really hard working up the energy to tackle the mess, but it really wasn’t as bad as it seemed at the beginning. Even better, we’re loving how much more useful the space is now that we’ve pared down to just what we need and organized so it’s all much more accessible.
Carolyn says
Our basement is awful too, and I just cleaned it last spring! About the wood: is any of it unfinished? You could have a big ol’ bonfire in the backyard! (If there’s varnish involved though, you might not want to release all those chemicals into the air …)

It’s a mix of both, but not a bad idea for the good stuff. :)

OH THE SHAME!!! I admit, I too have a messy space called the dreaded garage. I have been steadily tossing things(like old newspapers from 2003, REALLY????) each week for the trash/recycling to pick up, but it’ll take years to clear the mess at the rate I’m going. I feel your pain. I’m giving myself a 4 week deadline to get that sucker cleaned out! Thanks for the boost.

please promise me that (at least for a LONG time) you won’t do a “makeover” on this space? i would hate for it to suddenly become beautiful, because then i’d feel awful about my own wor spaces. everyone needs an undecorated space somewhere–heck your old house still had it’s garage as a holdout!
Corie says
Oh, Johnny! (I don’t know, it just came out.) ;) That’s a MESS! I always love it when you guys post things like this b/c next to your perfectly styled bookcases or freshly arranged bathroom drawer, this is kinda shocking! I’ve seen enough videos/pics by now to know you guys are “normal”, but it’s still nice to see.
We have a workshop. And it’s SUPER. Freestanding saw and table saws & so.many.tools, a long working counter, plenty of storage, a TV (and, holla! A DVD player WITH a VCR! A rare treat!). We’ve lived here going on 6 years and I bet we majorly cleaned it out 6 times — every Spring, it seems. I have no idea how to keep it clean… other than, you know, actually cleaning up after a project. But, after a project is completed, do you really want to clean it up, especially when the room is so easily hidden? No way! You want to shower and relax, so you close the door. And after you’re all clean and relaxed, do you really want to go sweep up saw dust? No! Vicious CYCLE! Let’s break it! Clean it out and then I challenge you to keep it clean, and I’ll challenge my husband to the same thing. Keep It Clean 2012 is ON! ;)

Challenge accepted! And if I’m victorious, maybe I’ll treat myself to a DVD player down there! Okay, or maybe just a radio…

Don’t worry no judging here! we have almost been at our home for 3 years and while everything is organized inside (most of the time kind of hard with three kiddos) our garage looks like a dumping ground maybe this summer we will paint the cement floors. I can’t wait to see how your garage turns out maybe that will be my inspiration to organize ours :)

Thanks for sharing!! We’re playing basement tango while my husband (sporadically) works on painting the floor/walls. So, there’s lots of shuffling things back and forth to painted/non-painted spaces just to try to get it all done. We have lots more “stuff” in our basement, though (kind of like your playroom!). Hoping it’ll get done sooner rather than later! :-)

My basement used to look like yours if you exchange the pile of wood for garden stuff. Yes, garden stuff that has been sitting around since last fall. My mom came last week to see the new baby and help with some yard and garden work. It rained. She saw the basement and decided that’s where she could help. Hello, clean and organized basement!
Vicki says
What is it about basements?! I go down to mine every day for laundry, the 2nd toilet, to get a toy, etc, but it is a horrible mess! I blame ours on our baby (now 16 months) keeping me too busy to keep it tidy and my husband being to lazy to keep it tidy! I have a big cleaning the house day planned for tomorrow, and I’m hoping to get to the basement too. But it is TOTALLY overwhelming…
Kimberj says
Hey John, my husband keeps his wood pile in the rafters of his workshop space. He’s built brackets out of wood, metal straps, pvc, etc depending on which house it was in. That keeps them out of the way, clean, and handy. He also made a bin to keep the small bits in out of a trash can.
YoungHouseLove says
Good tip! I’ll have to clean out some of the random stuff the old owners left up in the rafters already – like a pool net cleaner thing. Um, we don’t have a pool…

WHAT A RELIEF!! Finally, a blogger admits to a mess that is ACTUALLY a mess! ;)
Our basement is a nightmare. We are in a very tiny house (780 sq ft!) with three kids, two dogs and two rats. Everything lands in the basement, stays wherever we initially tossed it, gets soaked anytime there’s a good rain and then mildews. The piles and piles of damp cloth and cardboard attracts camel crickets or, as I like to call them, mutant alien zombie monsters that want to eat you. That may not have helped my kids with their fears about the basement…
YoungHouseLove says
Ha! Yes, we’ve had our fair share of “messes” but this one is definitely a mess in its truest form.

Yep, we all have that place. Here’s mine: http://www.thebookofjimmy.com/reintroducing-the-tin-can-at-camp-davis/
It’s a shed/studio/eventual living room out-building at our farm house in WV. The pictures I chose for that post are the clean ones from the original walk-through when we bought it. I wanted to show something that would give people an idea of the space. Since we’ve owned it it’s become overrun by tools, my drum set and a growing hoarder-like pile of recycling that we need to sort before hauling away. The pile is terrifying – about five feet wide and three feet tall. Showing its current state would just distract readers from our vision of what it could be.
It is our shame. And I want to fix it up so, so bad.

Ugh, I can feel your pain! Our basement was a similar disaster until I spent a whole day down there purging in January and invested in three huge bins and donated/tossed the rest. There’s still unused/half full paint cans that we need to tackle and a failed table project to dismantle, but they’re out of the way.
I was on a roll after the basement, and I knew the garage was in worse shape (aka the man pit that my husband uses for projects and to store some of the lawn stuff). He kept blaming it on the sofa set that I was holding for a friend, that it was taking up too much room. I checked with her & then sold the set locally & off it went. That was three months ago, and it’s still a pit. I should take a photo but he won’t let me out there because he knows I’ll probably have a heart attack. But perhaps the next few days while it’s nice I’ll promise to keep from making comments if he’ll let me clean it out. ;)
It does frustrate me a little though (or a lot, depending on the day), as a fairly neat/organized/uncluttered person, to know the mess is out of control out there. I can handle a junk drawer or two and a couple of cluttered closets (next on my list), but the garage and basement are another story. It’s too easy to just toss things out of the way into those spaces, but then it takes forever to get them back into a manageable state!
Nikki says
Wow.. our storage room used to look like that until I had several crazy moments and started tossing everything we didn’t need. It still isn’t all organized but that’s due to a lack of proper shelving for my husbands military gear. I feel your pain, truuust me.
Carter says
Bless John’s heart…he sounds so sad in his explanation of the room. I’m glad to see it’s not just me that has this issue! Once a room goes messy, it’s hard to turn it the other way. I know you’ll have a great transformation, though!!
Karyl says
Our (not so little) secret is the garage chock full of kid hand-me-downs and a house full of building items (light fixtures, 5 sinks, a claw foot tub, etc) that we’ve been stock piling off of Craigslist for the house we’re getting ready to build this summer.
Anyway out of purely selfish interests since I’d love to see you make one, have you thought about building a backyard garden shed for the mower, garden equip, and bikes? That would free up a lot of space in the basement for your workshop since use it so much.
YoungHouseLove says
We’ve loosely considered it, but first want to work on getting the carport converted into a garage first because that may negate the need for a third outdoor equipment storage space.
