This week has been all about cleaning and organizing, so it’s only fair that I take this opportunity to own up to the most unclean, unorganized space in our house (perhaps ever in our whole lives). The horror lies behind this door, in my basement workshop:
Just like our first house, we have a separate entry basement that you access from a door in the back yard. Except in this house, I’ve avoided showing this space the entire 16 months that we’ve lived here. Yes, it has been kept completely off camera and video – which is almost unheard of for over-sharers like us. Why? Because I’m embarrassed to my core about its state. I’ve been meaning to tackle it for a while. But a while has turned into a while longer. So I’m finally forcing myself into action by showing it in all of its glory, er, gory. Feel free to play this video while I hide my face in my hands.
For those who can’t watch the video (or couldn’t take more than the first 15 seconds or so), here’s the mess you missed. Although for some reason it doesn’t look as bad in the pics. The video is the real deal. Haha. It still looks pretty bad though…
As I said on camera, I blame the whole thing on these pallets that the previous owners left in the yard and I dragged inside when making our living room console table last April. I guess the pallet scrap invited me to add other leftover wood to the pile, all awaiting some future time in which it’ll all be “taken care of.”
Well, it hasn’t been taken care of. And instead the mess in one corner gradually made me care less about keeping the rest of it clean. So the whole space has kind of deteriorated into one big cluttered, dirty, slobfest.
So here’s my vow to clean and organize the workshop. It won’t take a day, or even a week, but I’m vowing to make a plan, put it into action, and keep you guys posted. After all, it’s a pretty useful space for us – mainly as storage (tools, yard stuff, etc) and it also makes a great work space. But it hasn’t been serving either function very well with all of this junk in my way.
Here’s my rough plan of attack (feel free to tackle a garage, basement, or attic right along with me if you’d like):
- Pare down and organize my scrap pile: I like having spare wood around, but not this much. I’ve been trying to figure out a better solution than just throwing it away, but haven’t settled on one yet (a lot is too small to sell or donate according to the calls I’ve made – so maybe I’ll freecycle what I don’t think I’ll need for future projects).
- Take everything out and clean things from top to bottom: Part of the reason the floor and workbench are covered in a confetti of sawdust is that it’s hard to sweep around all of this stuff. I figure if I get everything out, I’ll have no excuse. Plus it makes the next step easier.
- Bring back in only what I need: And hopefully organize it as it all comes back in, grouping like items and placing things in zones that actually make sense to keep things functional.
- Sell / donate / dispose of what’s not needed: We’re guessing there will be a fair amount of items leaving for good. And of course if we craigslist or freecycle anything we’ll post the link for any interested locals.
By the end of it all I’m not looking to have some giant, decorated makeover – just a clean workable room that functions for all the building and staining and spraying and sawing and storing that we’d love to use it for. Though I wouldn’t hate it if it turned into a little bit of a man cave. Just sayin’…
Okay, now make me feel better. Who else has (or at least had) a shamefully messy space in their house? This is a no judgement zone. At least I hope it is. If not, I’m sure I’m getting crazy judged right now. Yikes.
Ruth says
We keep our giant mess in the dog’s room (it’s the spare room but the dog’s crate is in there so we call it his room). Cardboard boxes, packing material, sodas (I mean a LOT of sodas. We bought them for our wedding and had leftovers, but we barely drink soda), other leftover stuff from our wedding, clothes that don’t fit, the Christmas tree, an old vacuum, pots and pans that don’t fit in the kitchen, the list just goes on. It’s hard to hide because the dog’s water is in his crate so we have to always have the door to the room open. Every few months I go in, sort things, and move them around so that you can’t see the mess from the doorway.
Alex - Old Town Home says
Oh man, right there with you! Wendy outed me to the world (and by that I mean the Internet) in January after I called her out on her bag hoarding issues. I’ve been hard at work to show everyone that I can turn it around, but it’s been a struggle. It seems each attempt at cleaning the basement is derailed when I end up huddled in the corner, sobbing into a pile of sawdust and spider’s webs. It’s an ugly scene I assure you (the grown man blubbering more than the basement disaster). Seriously, how does this happen to us? I mean, I know exactly how it happens… but HOW DOES IT HAPPEN?!?!?
How about this, if I vow to get it done when you get it done, and you vow to get it done when I get it done, maybe we can just ignore it forever? Just an idea, just throwing it out there.
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, I have effectively ignored it and look at the explosion! Haha. I didn’t go down there for a few months and then when I did I almost died. John apparently had not been ignoring it, but feeding the mess monster wood and sawdust. Hahah. And it grew…

Your basement is quite reminiscent of my garage. Just saying’.
Also, somehow our dining table (that doesn’t actually get much dining done on it) is the drop zone for everything. I unclutter it every weekend, by by the end of the week it’s vanished again under a pile of mail/keys/odds and ends. I haven’t figured out how to handle that yet.

Oooh….I read that you have a room full of book furniture/secret projects you don’t know what to do with….hmmm, I’m thinking a local auction once the book comes out! Set a price, then auction….you get the price you want for the piece, we drive up the price auction-wise and give the overages to your charity of choice!
Or you could totally do what YOU want to do with it…haha.

Hahaha, we’ve all been there. I think it was 10 years before my mother would actually let my husband go down in her basement to bring anything up (table leaf, extra chairs, Christmas stuff). When her kitchen sink pipe broke and flooded the basement, we took a lot of stuff to the dump and my dad about had a heart attack. He can’t stand to throw anything away. Good luck! An organized space is so zen. Makes you breath easier.

bonjour,
Good news you are now international! (maybe i got ahead of myself there and you already are, in which case one more from France. yeah!)
I’ve been following you for a while but don’t have a habit of commenting (I do that “live” enough everywhere else, i can’t guarantee the consequences if i were to start on the web!)
My comment is for a very specific purpose : last week end i helped my dad clean his basement/wood shop/storage area_yes, it’s a huge space!!! He is a carpenter/cabinet maker (?) Not sure of the difference, English is not my first language, there are terms i’m not so sure about…
So here comes my advice (but in fact his idea…) Apart from the shelves for great pieces of wood of different species which are well sorted, my dad made 2 big boxes on on casters, one for small scraps of wood, off cuts etc…and the other for the longer pieces that are “loosely” stored vertically in it so you can access and assess what you have/ nedd etc… The boxes are movable, outside if he needs space for big projects and it also allows him to get some wood to start the fire in the winter
Yes, i do come from pretty clever stock!
Allright, that’s it. (and you thought you were over sharers? look at that, i wrote an essay for a tiny piece of advice!)
Thank you for all your work! it’s a fun moment on the internet
Disclaimer : if any mistakes were made in english, i blame the french school system, not me, never me!

Love that! Such a great tip! The idea of casters is great! And your english is parfait! C’est magnifique. You’re cuter than a petit choux.

My grandfather was a cabinet maker. Cabinet makers are carpenters, but very specialized sorts. Every cabinet maker is a carpenter, but not all carpenters are cabinet makers, if that helps. And the really good cabinet makers are true artists. :). Don’t you just love the smell of a woodshop now?

I have a garage that goes in messy cycles. The time before last it was cleaned out because it flooded and sadly most things had to go to the dump because I did not know about the flood for a week (detached garage I rarely go into and a sump pump malfunction) and most recently because of a new roof.http://a-can-do-attitude.blogspot.com/2012/04/there-are-holes-in-my-roof-dear-liza.html Now I am motivated to really organize maybe even finishing it off with some drywall.

I’m pleasantly surprised by John’s Hoarders style workshop. I thought we were the only ones. My husband’s workshop is currently equally as bad, except three times the size with no natural light, which makes it look like a dungeon. It was even worse a few weeks ago. I couldn’t even go down there because it triggered panic attacks! Tomorrow we are taking a huge pile of scrap metal to the scrap yard, which will put a big dent in the cleaning process and allow us to put up shelving. But John is absolutely right, once the mess starts in a tiny part of a room, it magically multiplies from there as it gets more difficult to access storage behind it or clean the dust bunnies from under it, and before you know it, it’s overwhelming and anxiety provoking!
Jessica says
Glad I’m not the only one whose basement looks like this. haha! Actually just a couple weeks ago, my hubby started organizing stuff down there so it does look a lot better now, but it’s still not there yet. My goal is to have every single thing that is just down there for “storage” packed away in tupperware bins. This way, when we finally “buy” a home, we will be packed up and ready to move. I can’t imagine having to pack all of the crap down there along with the rest of the house at the same time. I’d rather do it now and have it ready 6 months from now when we find our home! I am glad to say that there is finally enough of a clear area down there that my little one can ride her plasma car around while we’re working in the basement. Oh, and maybe I might go down and ride the plasma car myself from time to time….don’t judge. lol. Have you heard of these things??? They are AWESOME!! And fun for the whole family….got ours on Amazon for 50 beanos :)

Also, thanks for adding the photos. Youtube is blocked at work, so I can never see your videos (unless I remember after I get home.)

Sarah says
Pfft.. I was expecting some rad scene from Hoarders the way you’ve been leading up to this.
Not bad at all. Especially considering that you guys do not have a garage. And considering how many projects you two juggle at a time.
But of course, there is always room for improvement. :) Do you guys plan on making this as beautiful as your previous basement?
YoungHouseLove says
I think it might not get that “room-ish” since that space was more finished looking to start with, but it hopefully will be just as functional and I know John wants some sort of form down there too- just so it’s a man room he’s proud of. Haha. We’ll have to see where we end up!

That’s a small area compared to the size of your house. What is under the rest of the house? I live in upstate NY and most homes have basements that run the length of the house or are split in half between a basement and a garage. Is it just a slab under the rest of your house or do you have a secret DIY dungeon. ; )
YoungHouseLove says
It’s just added under the bedroom, which was an addition (so there’s crawl space under the rest of the house).

It’s funny how the project area where you are creating things to organize, improve, repurpose, or just try to make life easier/better looking seem to get out of control so quickly! Living in a small condo downtown Chicago with my husband leaves little space to get out of control…hubby was nice enough to install shelving in our spare bedroom for all my crafting supplies. Funny how quickly the extra space was fill and began to overflow into the closet, dresser, and on the guest bed. Any time we start a project there is at least a week of complete chaos just about everywhere. In the spirit of spring cleaning I will get a handle on things…soon :)

I read somewhere once that clutter areas vary by country: Australians put stuff under the house or in the garage, the English in attics and basements, the Irish in sheds out back, and Americans put it in all of the above. If that’s your only trouble spot, you are way ahead of the curve already!
YoungHouseLove says

Cindy S. says
Thank you EVERYONE for sharing your overflow/excess/clutter horror stories; I am gradually feeling less sub-human, knowing that so many others have problems with “stuff.” As Americans, we have access to so many neat things, so cheaply, that it is so easy to overdo it.
My husband and I got a little over-ambitious with yard sale shopping, and while we have scored some incredible, over-the-top deals, we’ve now got a real mess on our hands. We, too, have the trails in the garage, the overstuffed guest room, and the piled-up back porch.
As we sort through our stuff, I’ll be thinking of everyone else who has this dreaded chore awaiting them—together, we can do it!!!
Stephanie says
Don’t feel bad, my craft room looks just like that. I have big plans to clean it this weekend…

Oh my gosh. My garage is a hilarious disaster right now. We are having a garage sale to raise money for our adoption so not only do we have our regular mess-inducing piles of stuff, but we also have piles and piles of donations we have been collecting over the last few months. It started out organized, but then as people dropped stuff off, it was too easy to just toss it in the garage with the intent to organize later. And now…well let’s just say there could be a family of raccoons living in the middle of our garage and we wouldn’t know. It’s so overwhelming though, I don’t even know where to begin. I liked John’s list of things to tackle one at a time. It helps to break down one very large to-do into smaller, more manageable tasks.
Jen @ The Decor Scene says
No fear guys, I have three areas like this, our third bedroom, our attic & our shed. We have no kids and we are packed to the top basically at this point. We so have to purge, purge purge!!! Our third bedroom is the office and is out of hand right now with stuff for a garage sale, so that will be the first area that actually gets cleaned up in a few weeks after we have the garage sale, because it isn’t coming back in the house. The second area that will get organized in a few weeks, also for the garage sale, is the attic. The shed is a whole other thing at this point. We don’t have a garage, so our 12×12 shed is it for us. We also have no basement because we have a Hi-Ranch. 1st floor is all living space and no storage room. The shed MUST get organized and it WILL look nice and clean one day. Hopefully by the end of this summer if it kills me. :) Have a great weekend and thanks for a great week of inspiring organization. :)

UGH. I always said that we’d NEVER become one of those “garage people” who can’t even park their car in one stall of their three-stall garage because they have so much crap packed in there.
And now? We’re inching our way towards that. Not really, but enough for me to close the garage door as quickly as I can when we pull the car in after work. Our neighbors across the street have an amazingly clean and organized garage. I want to be like them. Once the weather finally cooperates for a whole weekend, we’re going to put all our organization ideas into play and win.

I see one of the pallets hanging from the rafters, tucked a way in a corner for safety reaons. Maybe using some kind of cales or chain to secure eacu corner to the rafters that would give you a place to store all the scrap wood and make use of wasted vertical space.

Oh, if only I were brave enough to show you my workshop! Same thing, with fabric and three sewing machines thrown in.Just remember the good stuff that came out of this mess though: I seem to recall you needing moulding of some sort (in the kithcen, perhaps?) and finding a piece in the scrap pile, relieved not to have thrown the pile out too soon. You will clean it–as I do–and eventually, as long as you use in on the fly, for little, quick cuts/mends/patches… it comes right back to this. I find that bigger projects, while more time consuming, are easier: once done, they’re done. But every day maintaenace things–be it a rip cut or tidying up the workshop–are much harder to manage. For me, anyway; hence, I, too qualify for the hoarder show.

Our basement is only partially finished. The previous owners used it daily. We, on the other hand, do not and only use it to dump anything and *everything* we don’t use on a day to day basis. There are piles of furniture I’ve got plans on refinishing, piles of decor clutter waiting for the basement to be finished (why get rid of it when we could use it in the basement one day right?), bikes and piles of my boyfriends tools. Among other things…
I am mortified at the state of it all, but it’s just so overwhelming! And for some reason when people come over and my boyfriend takes them on a tour of the house he always ends the tour down there…ugh.
I feel your pain.
Lisa.

That could be our back porch. It’s a screened porch and we got TONS of scrap wood for free on freecycle. It was supposed to be for my Odyssey of the Mind kids, but it was waayyyy nicer wood than I wanted them to practice with, plus some cool peg board, and some cool counter-like material…so we said, “Let’s keep it for us!”…we have a TINY shed and a bigger one out back with no electricity…so it’s living on our back porch…covering our grill…covering our cute bistro table…covering our outdoor storage box with my gardening stuff & tennis racket (in case i ever finish cleaning and actually get to exercise). Don’t feel badly, but I am VERY inspired, as summer gets closer, to also do a B&A of it!

That looks just like my husband’s garage workshop that we (mostly him) are tackling this weekend to try to get stuff in order. We had so much stuff in there left from the previous owners that I feel like we could have opened up our own hardware store with it all…except it was all junky and old.
On a funny note, I was watching the video while my 4 year old daughter was in the other room and she came running in asking if the person talking was Blue from the movie Rio. Apparently John sounds like Jesse Eisenberg to her. Just thought that was funny.

Some of those long skinny pieces of wood can easily stand upright in one of your garbage cans; that would get them up off the floor. If you plan on that pallet garden one of the commenters mentioned, that might use them up and get them out of your way… Just get the BIG things up and off the floor and you’ll feel so accomplished that doing the rest will be easy as pie!

I really think everyone has a spot they are ashamed of in their residence. Ours is what we have nick-named “teh carport room”, well, because it is a carport converted into a room. It is a long narrow room that is hard to make usable space. So we use it as the catch-all room, Goodwill pile, big item recycling pile, craft room….and the list goes on!
Rebecca says
My shameful space is by far my attic. While I’m not a total minimalist, I’m definitely a “less-is-more,” neat-and-organized kinda gal, and our attic flies in the face of all of that. Everything my husband and I brought to our apartment (as newlyweds) that we didn’t have a space for automatically went to the attic, and it’s an unbelievable disaster.
To make this more difficult, the attic is an awkward space. The front, where you come up on the stairs, is a normal height and you can stand. The rest of it is up a step and you can only stand in the middle because of the eaves. This makes shelving really difficult. Do you have any tips for organizing a tricky, non-conventional space?
YoungHouseLove says
Hmm, I think with eaves the key is vertical storage that comes out to you (deep) so you don’t have to step too far in since the roofline is so awkward. By adding vertical shelves you can use all the space for lots of things if that helps!

Don’t feel so bad. I’m sure there are worse basements out there. But living in Florida, what do I know about basements? :) Anyways, recently I saw two different organizers that could be used for scrap wood and/or gardening tools and thought I’d share the inspiration. The first (http://pinterest.com/pin/14566398765094384/) is an old filing cabinet with the drawers removed, turned sideways and painted. The other I saw on tv the other day on that new DIY Network show Rehab Addict (one of my new favorites!). Anyways, she was redoing a garage and needed a way to store all of the scrap wood, and decided to use an old ladder. Here’s a link to a clip from the show that gives the basic idea (http://www.diynetwork.com/videos/garage-overhaul/96686.html). And, her garage is WAY MESSIER than your basement, so maybe it’ll make you feel a little better. :) Good luck organizing!

OK John, hear is my virtual man-understanding-man comment, on behalf of my husband. We have a two storey house, where the 1st storey is basically a double garage under the living footprint. 5yrs ago we built a car port over our driveway, which doubles as a deck for the 2nd storey. Since that day our cars have lived outside (in the car port). So what with the under garage? Hmmmm…it has morphed into that huge wasteland of storage space. All the “stuff” is in there. The garden stuff, the leftover stuff, the we-don’t-want-this-in-our-house-but-need-to-keep-it-for-some-reason STUFF!! So as I type, the hubs is in the yard putting together a garden shed to keep the actual stuff we want to keep corralled. Then, the plan is to ‘YHL style’ organise the leftover stuff into the other categories (I’m hoping alot of it will fit into the garbage category) and then we can actually build that old double garage into 50m2 or so of usable house space. Spare room, 2nd bath, kids zone…..

John – I think you can see we all have that ‘shameful’ spot in our houses. Our garage was looking just like your basement – for like the 4th time in as many years we went thru and organized it all again. I think it’s just one of those places where things get dumped or stored and it just has to be cleaned out again and again. But thanks for being so honest with us – and it’s really not so bad!
Also, thanks for this organizing blog week. It inspired me to clean out and organize our linen closet, 2 medicine cabinets and 2 sink cabinets. I had an entire laundry basket of empty boxes, empty bottles, trash that could be recycled/thrown away; and then another laundry basket of partially used and never used soaps, lotions, etc. that can be donated, etc. I bought containers at the dollar store and wrangled all the little products together (ala Sherry’s wrangling of your bathroom sink drawer) and I LOVE IT!!! It took me almost the whole day in between kid duty and errands, but it is so worth it! Thanks for the kick in the pants!!!
