How do you like that sensationalized title? Haha. It’s like Star Magazine up in this joint. This is basically a post idea that John and I came up with when we realized that there were a surprising amount of nooks and crannies in the house that we’ve never shared. And some things that are a lot bigger than a nook or a cranny. Which is weird for two over-sharers like us. So consider that remedied now that we’re over-spilling the beans in true Petersik fashion. Without further ado, here’s the first we-can’t-believe-we-haven’t-shared-it-yet thing. Our pantry:
We’ve mentioned that we have a pantry-ish cabinet next to the wall oven in our kitchen…
… but realized that we never opened wide and snapped a shot. All the cabinetry in the kitchen was replaced around 25 years ago, so the swing out doors and the little middle compartment that also swings out (so there’s storage on the back and on the wall behind it) must have been quite the state of the art stuff back in the day. Heck, we’re still kind of charmed by all of those little shelves to stash stuff – although we do occasionally forget where we put something which leads to a ten minute cabinet swinging search party.
Ok moving on, betcha didn’t know we had an in-ground irrigation system. Fancy, right? Since I’m not fancy I just use the term sprinklers. It’s not for our whole almost-acre lot, just for the front yard and a small portion of the backyard that’s grass. Of course we’re “frugal” with our water usage, so we only turn it on after a while without rain (when we’re not on water restriction of course), but they’re actually pretty handy (it definitely beats wrestling the hose). And Burger jumps off the couch/out of the bed and runs to the window if they turn on. Which is always hilarious. The guy loves watching them do their thing.
Up next is just an update that we’ve been meaning to share. Remember I mentioned that I got a rendering of our first house for John this Father’s Day? Well, I finally got around to framing it. First here’s a shot of the pretty little pen & ink + Prisma marker portrait:
The artist (Jennifer Ahnquist from Kentucky) also included this first-draft sketch in the envelope as well, which was really fun to see:
So here’s the portrait hanging up in our always-changing hallway frame gallery. We hung it nice and low (using the same affixed-to-the-wall-so-it’s-baby-safe method that we outlined here) since Clara loves saying “ohh hou” which is “bean-talk” for old house. So cute.
Oh and see the frame above it? That’s this page from a hand-me-down Boden catalog that my BFF left at my house. I loved the playful riff on “seize the day” so I just cut it out (following the imperfect background rectangle) and popped it into that frame. Can’t wait until Clara starts learning to read, since it’s down towards her level.
This never before seen tidbit might scare you in an is-that-the-vine-from-little-shop-of-horrors-and-will-it-try-to-eat-my-face kind of way. Yup, that’s right, the green leafy mass on the tree trunk next to our upper patio is a vine. It’s actually “hugging” a tall healthy oak tree (we had someone check things out, just to make sure), and apparently the vine down towards the base shouldn’t be invasive enough to do too much damage, but if it continues to grow and starts looking too heavy or the tree starts not-thriving we’ll be on it like white on rice.
And now for the that’s-a-shame thing that we’ve never really pointed out specifically. We love the extra wide reclaimed pine floors in our bedroom, but they desperately need some love. Check out the faded square in front of our dresser (our best guess is that some piece of furniture sat there for so long that the floor somehow faded around it).
It has also completely lost its seal, so the previous owners must have placed something brown here on the floor that was sucked right into the wood and stained it (floors with poly or some other sealer usually prevent this from happening). So refinishing it (along with a lot of other damaged areas of hardwood in our house) is definitely on the someday agenda.
We also ironically learned in the very last post about our first house how often we re-share the same angles of a room over and over again – but somehow miss taking shots from other vantage points. For example, we never shared a shot like this of the den (looking into the kitchen/laundry nook) until moving day when everything was packed up in the truck. So it makes us want to include mundane photos like this one of the hallway that connects Clara’s room, the playroom, the guest room, and the hall bathroom to the heart of the house (the hallway frame gallery/kitchen/dining room/living room, etc).
See that giant intake vent near the floor? I’m dying to add some sort of wainscoting to the hall, but I’m not sure how I can do it with this beast going on. Maybe just work it in around it and paint it glossy white and hope that it looks semi-seamless?
Ok, and here’s the thing that will probably surprise everyone the most. This is the south-west corner of our house:
Yup, it’s pointy. The entire sunroom actually slants up. Which definitely threw us off during our walk-through since the rest of the house is so mid-century and ranch-ish. This room was added in the 90’s, so that might explain the different look. But it’s actually a really airy and light-filled room from the inside – thanks to that lofted ceiling:
So it has lots of potential and we’re happy to have it – strange slanting-up roof and all. We actually have a few ideas for trying to integrate it down the road when it comes to the exterior, but who knows where we’ll end up. One thing is for sure: we’ll keep you posted. Probably in that typical over-sharing fashion that we know so well.
Is anyone on the floor? Come on, somebody tell me that something shocked them. Probably not. I wish we had crazier house secrets (although I do have a recurring dream about discovering a hidden room). Wouldn’t that rock?
Psst- Speaking of dreams, I actually had one about Beyonce last night. But the real one (as opposed to the chicken one that we mentioned yesterday). We bought a tiny horseshoe shaped necklace together (it was $100 so I put in $40 and said “you’re the rich one, so do you mind doing $60?). Ugh, I’m even embarrassingly cheap in my dreams. But Beyonce was cool with it. The oddest thing is the concept (how on earth were Beyonce and I going to share a necklace? Are we together so much that swapping it back and forth is easy?). So strange.

I love this! It’s funny you mentioned a “secret room” because I was totally thinking about that before I even read the post. A secret room has always been a dream of mine. I actually had a book when I was a wee tot and it was about this little kid having a secret room in his room. I’m wondering if any of these YHL fans have a “secret room” they’d like to share!

To deal with your wall vent issue, it might help to replace the metal vent with an inset wood slat vent. My house is older (1925) so both cold air return vents are large wood grills.
Or just plan your wainscoting so the vent is contained in a single panel and doesn’t break up a vertical board.
I also agree with the other comments about watering in the early morning hours. It takes advantage of the cooler part of the day, but avoids the mildew and fungus problems that watering at night can cause. If you have a timer on your sprinker you don’t even have to think about it.
YoungHouseLove says
Love that idea for the hallway! And thanks for the watering tip too!

Shockers for me…
1. Your kitchen pantry. I am surprised that you haven’t got it organized to the “T”. I guess I envision it to be all labeled and plastic or glass (yes, you would use glass) containers. Perhaps in the future? I see that in the future for you. IF NOT, THAT IS OK TOO.
2. Also…I thought I was the only one who used the saying “white on rice.” I so giggled when I read that…Sherry, you definitely have a fun sense of humor.
Remember I told you I was on my way to the new Salvation Army store in Portsmouth, NH. Well, it was a bust. I left once again (I try so hard to be like Sherry P. when I go into these stores) “empty-handed. A REAL BUST!!! Oh well, another day.
Other than that…I still love your house. IT IS AWESOME and once again…you are very lucky!!! For many reasons.
Have a wonderful weekend.

HAHA, I don’t even have that pantry and this happens to me too! I have three boxes of baking soda in varying sizes, and I’d swear I had a full bottle of seasoned salt but I can’t find it.

That is so crazy that you talked about dreams in your post today because I had a dream last night that I was at a slumber party with you and John and we were going to sleep on the floor and then you had to turn the alarm on and for some reason I had to sneak out the house before you did but before I got out the door I saw my cats where in your house and I had to get them before you noticed them. And then you heard us and formed a search party and found grass people living in your attic.
That is what I get for reading your blog before bed. Haha.
Also that whole pointy roof is pretty awesome.
YoungHouseLove says
LOL – I’m not sure which part of that dream is my favorite. The fact that we hosted a slumber party? That your cats were in attendance? Or the concept of “grass people” who live in our attic. Hilarious!

The first thing that came to my mind when I saw your hallway was to add wainscoting too! I think maybe you could take advantage of the vent and instead of hide it- accentuate it. Ever seen old houses with really cool Victorian looking vents? Maybe pick up a whole bunch of those at a flea market and create your wainscoting down the hallway with those as the boxed trim. Of coarse you would want to paint them all the same color so it didn’t look too busy, but it could end up pretty cool of you did it just right. Anyways, just an out of the box idea! Love looking at your blog it has some great tips!
Sugar Cookie says
I love the House of Smiths post about thrify, chunky baseboards. Maybe doing something like this would work around the vent (and be cheap!): http://www.thehouseofsmiths.com/2009/10/first-big-reveal-yup-here-it-is-kitchen.html. And since you showed us your pantry, I love what they did in theirs: http://www.thehouseofsmiths.com/2010/07/pantry-remix.html. Thought you might enjoy these ideas if you hadn’t seen them yet!
YoungHouseLove says
Love how both of those turned out! We’ve seen that chunky baseboard trick used on ceiling too for crown molding. Love how you wouldn’t even know part of it was just painted!

I have a question regarding your storage for your DIY projects. You always seem to have so many supplies (and paints and stains and tools and so forth) on hand, but where do you store it all? Basement? Kitchen, like in the old house? I need major help in this area. If you’ve posted on this before, I missed it. Thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
Good question. Most of our “go to” tools and supplies live in the kitchen, like the last house. You can read more about that in this old post: https://www.younghouselove.com/2011/01/tool-academy/
Leftover paint and stain usually lives in the basement, though we keep some of it (like the white we use for trim) handy in the cabinet above the laundry. The basement is turning into a nice, though messy, catch-all for things. Someday I really should organize it…

I keep having that same dream! About finding a hidden room, not Beyonce, lol. Wonder what that could mean?

sherry,
i just have to say that i’m so happy i’m not the only one having these “secret room” dreams. i always thought it was because i went to school for interior design, but almost every dream i have involves me entering a house (sometimes a house i’ve never seen before, sometimes my own) that is so amazing and comfortable and then i always discover a secret room. this room is almost always completely furnished and completely abandoned. as in covered with dust and sheets and you can tell no one has been in it for years/decades. i’m always the first one to discover this room and there’s never an explanation for it but it makes me wake up with this super eerie sensation.

Love the pantry, but the fact that you have a basement is most surprising to me. Where is the access? Is it a full basement?
YoungHouseLove says
The access is only from the outside (there’s a door around the back) and it’s only under our bedroom and the rest of the house is crawl space. It’s not finish and is totally a mess, so not much to write about at this point.

Would love to hear any pros/cons you can think of. Sometimes those things pop up after a few months of use. Thanks in advance…

We’re still loving it. He’s definitely softened up a bit over time (though we probably should rotate our sitting positions more so he softens more evenly), so it’s gotten more comfortable. Only real complaint I have is that now having a grey sofa (vs. our old tan ones) shows Burger’s tiny hairs more. But that dog sheds so little it’s not a big deal. Hope you enjoy yours as much as we do!

My parents did find a secret room in the house I grew up in. The house was super old (think 1910) and apparently there was a water cistern in the basement where the gutters would direct rainwater which was stored and could be pumped up into the house (the plumbing was all gone, and it no longer had water in it because the gutters were reconfigured at some point). I guess my dad could tell because the basement didn’t continue under our kitchen and there was a little space at the top of the basement wall where you could see into it. I didn’t know any of this, so one day when I was about 6 my dad took a sledge hammer to the wall and knocked out a 3 ft hole, checked it out, then gave me and my brother flashlights and let us “explore” it. He eventually made an entire doorway and turned it into his workshop, but I remember growing up thinking you could take a sledge hammer to any basement wall and there would be rooms behind it :).

Stayed at our beach house in Manzanita, Oregon and was project central. Painted our door lime green on inside and red on the outside. Took advantage of some of your tips which worked great but needed to sand between coats because curing took forever. Then turned a dran entry into fab bu painting the wood shelves white and painting a back wall cheery yellow, added some hooks instead of a dreary rod. and created a bench to the space. Hope to soon try my hand at making a cushion. I also painted the inside of wine crates that I hung as shelving cheery colors of lime green, yellow and orange. An idea from Pinterest. They should make the site so you can download personal pictures because then you can post the inspiration and the actual side by side to see how the creativity of people from a post evolves into an actual project. A friend of ours had a secret passageway built into her house and it was her kids’ absolute favorite spot ever!
I had a completely unrelated question – I remember you had the windows in your old house replaced. Do you have any recommendations for types of window materials – i.e wood, vinyl, wood+vinyl, fiberglass etc etc…Also which brand of windows did you opt for? We are looking to update a couple of our windows that are in bad shape before winter arrives and are finding ourselves overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices and the sales pitches of each company. Hoping you guys can help narrow it down so any information you can send this way is much appreciated!!
YoungHouseLove says
We went with vinyl simply because we were getting all of the windows done and it was a pricey endeavor so that was what we could afford. We got a ton of quotes and went with Window World (I think they could do $159 a window or something awesome, of course with hauling and other taxes and fees it was still something like 2.5K). It was the most affordable bid though, and they did a good job and the house looked so much fresher and was way more energy efficient. So we were really happy with them!
