We’re excited to announce that the Petersik family is under construction again. Yup, someone’s gonna be a big sister… and she’s pretty darn excited about it.
The proverbial bun in Sherry’s oven is scheduled to arrive in April, and we’re both elated to be growing.
(I’ll happily put on some sympathy weight – it’s the least I can do)
Burger, on the other hand, has no idea what’s going on. But he’s generally excited about life, so that’s nice.
Sherry’s first trimester wasn’t without a few trials (a fender bender that had us worried for a bit and some pretty intense morning all-day sickness for the lady-wife to name a few) but we’re so grateful that all signs point to a healthy little bun so far. Given Clara’s birth complications, this pregnancy falls in the high risk category (more on that here and here), but we were excited to reach the safe-to-share milestone so we could spill the happy news to friends and family this weekend (conveniently while Nonna was in town). And now we get to share it with you guys!
Since you’re a curious bunch, we figured we’d answer your questions in a follow-up post on Friday like we did the first time we told the interwebs we were having a kid. So ask away, and we’ll answer as much as we can at the end of the week. Until then, I’m gonna get back to working on the sunroom and Sherry’s going to do her darndest to keep her breakfast down, probably while painting something.

Congratulations to all of you! I love the picture of Clara. How exciting to be a big sister. When I finally was pregnant with my second child and we told my 8 year old son, I was worried he would be upset to no longer be an only child. Instead he said, “Wahoo! We’re gonna party tonight!” Nearly 6 years later he is still excited to have a baby sister.
I wish you and your family a happy and healthy time:)
Kimberly @ Turning It Home says
Your son’s response was so sweet!
Jenna says
Yay! So exciting! I know we were all just waiting for the announcement since Clara turned 3! :) I’m due in February (Valentine’s Day actually!), so it’s so cool that you guys will be going through this whole baby thing the same time I am. Good luck with everything!! Talk about a scary time… I’ve never been so worried about something as I am about this banana-sized baby girl!
Reese B says
I feel like a member of my own family just announced the news to me… I am so excited for your beautiful family!
Congratulations!!!
Meg @ Mr.C & Me says
Wooohoooooo!!! Congratulations!!!
Robyn says
Congrats! You look awesome for being 1/3 of the way through! I am due with Bambino #2 in January. You are blessed to have Clara and the new one spaced out by almost 4 years. I’m sure she will be a helpful little momma. My girls will be 16 months apart…yikes! So happy for the whole fam!
Katie says
Yay!!!!! Congratulations John, Sherry, Clara and Burger!
Cassie says
Yay! Congratulations! I’m also due in April so let me say congrats on making it through the first trimester! I know I threw a little party once I went 3 days without feeling nauseous :)
Also, I read the comments on the photoshopped baby bump. I think you handled it way nicer that I would have. Here’s hoping for a dramaless, healthy and happy pregnancy!
Amber McMullin says
Ummm, is it silly that I yelled YAY! at my computer screen, whilst fist pumping, and got a little teary eyed!?! I’ve met you twice and been a follower since 2010, so it feels like I “know” you guys, I know I’m not the only one out there either that feels that way too! But none the less SO excited and happy for you guys!!!! Congrats!
Geertrude says
Congratulations! So sorry to hear you’ve been sick so much. Hope things get better from now on!
Sadie says
This made me a little teary! So excited for you guys and prayers for a safe pregnancy and delivery. I just read through some of the comments about photoshopping your bump. Good grief. I guess haters gonna hate.
Kate says
Congratulations!!!! So happy for you guys!
Sarah Stäbler says
So happy for you guys!!! Congratulations and way to go, Sherry, on making it through the first trimester! (You too, John!)

Hi Petersiks!
I just wanted to chime in with a “Congratulations!!” You guys are amazing to share so much of your lives with us despite constant scrutiny of your every decision. I hope you know even though there seem to be quite a few people who should think about spending more time with their family and friends vs obsessing over a photoshopping choice (bravo to y’all, btw!) or what you had for dinner or saying ex instead of eg, the majority of us just think y’all are awesome. Keep on keeping on, Petersiks!
Kelley says
Wonderful! So happy for your family. I’m currently 22 weeks and this is my first high-risk (our second was born with a congenital heart defect) pregnancy, so it’s been quite a bit different.. for us, anyway.
Continued wishes for a happy and healthy pregnancy for you!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw, sending you all the best wishes for the rest of your pregnancy Kelley!

I’m so excited for you all! The other day there was a picture of a text between Sherry and Katie about no word on a blood test and I thought Hmmmmm. Kept re-reading it as I couldn’t tell if it was Sherry or Katie’s test but it had me thinking there was a bun in the oven! So excited!
Eileen G. says
Congratulations!! What wonderful news for you all!! When I read the headline of the post, though, I thought, “oh no, please don’t tell us because it will mean nothing but nosy, inappropriate comments for months from people who don’t even know you!” And then I made the mistake of reading that string of comments you referenced. It made me experience some sympathetic morning sickness! Anyway, haters gonna hate, no matter what you do. I wish you joy, a safe and easy delivery, and peace as you take care of yourself and your growing family over the next six months. Thank you for sharing so much of your life with us, but no one should have any expectation that they receive such personal information whenever they want it. Keep those boundaries strong!
Claire says
Congratulations! They say the more sick you are in the beginning the healthier that baby is and growing! I’m sure Clara will be a wonderful big sister!
Lynn says
CONGRATS!!! What wonderful news for all of you!!!
Shevon says
Congratulations. Thank you for not posting a how to video on this expansion!!! That would have made for a totally different type of site. Very excited for you two strangers who I feel like I know personally!

Best wishes!

Dearest Adorable Petersik Family,
CONGRATULATIONS! Such exciting news! I’m so very happy for you :) Sherry – I hope you are able to get lots of rest, as difficult as it can be. I experienced “morning” (more like all-day) sickness until the 6th month of my pregnancy. I hope your nausea soon fades! xx
Alexis says
Whoopee! Yay! Congratulations! And all the other happy words in the dictionary. So happy for you guys! This is like when Beyonce announced her pregnancy, I’m so excited!
Olga says
Most exciting! We are due with #2 in April also so I’m right along with you on the journey. Hope you’re starting to feel better, I finally am.
I think you guys are amazing parents and your new little one will be very lucky to be part of such a great family.
Blake says
Yay! Would love to hear about how you think running a business from home will change once baby No. 2 arrives. Congrats!
Gina says
Wow! Congrats! Thats really cool that you get to be pregnant with your BFFs, The Bowers! When I read her post about being pregnant and feeling guilty because she has a friend who is having a tough time, I really thought she was talking about you guys. Glad to hear that’s not the case! So, how far along are you? (I’m sure that will be in Friday’s Q&A)
Eadie says
Yay! So happy for all of you! Many congratulations! Clara will be a wonderful big sister and Burger will have a new motivation to stay under the covers late into the morning. :)
Wishing you a happy, healthy safe pregnancy and delivery.
(BTW, I’m totally on the you deserve your privacy wagon. Ain’t nobody’s bizness but your own until you decide otherwise.)
Jessica says
Congratulations!!!!!
I have never posted before, but I read your blog daily, follow you on instagram (my daughters, 4 and 3, identify Clara on my phone like they know her), and keep your book on my coffee table!
Had to show some love!!
Mrs. Mitten says
Congrats! And wishing you a safe and healthy pregnancy.
I can’t wait for you guys to plan another nursery. Can you share a mood board on Friday? Or just give us any small hints on plans for that room? :)
kathy from ct says
Congratulations! I am freakishly, inappropriately happy for your family!! Why are all your commenters tearing up, etc? Because we all LOVE YOU. hahahahahahahahaha
Looking forward to many new projects from the bean pole.
Marissa says
Congrats on the new addition to Young House Love: Petersik edition. Wishing your family all the best. Time to create a beautiful nursery for the new baby bean!
Shasta L. says
YAY!!! Congratulations!!! I cannot wait to read what Clara has to say about her new sibling in future installments of Clara Conversations.
Lauren says
It is so ridiculous to me how excited I got for this announcement when we are complete strangers. It’s crazy how invested you can become in someone’s life just by reading about them for a few years. Congrats to you, Petersiks – praying for a happy, healthy pregnancy and delivery!
Silvana says
Congratulations!!! So happy for your family and cannot wait to hear more stories leading up to the big day :)
Taylor says
Congratulations! I’m so excited for your family! I’m also very sorry that you have to read and deal with the negative comments that come in. You both handle them with such grace. Privacy is your right and people should respect that regardless of the fact that your job is on the internet…you are still people (and wonderful people at that!)
Again, congratulations!
Amanda says
Oh my goodness – CONGRATULATIONS! I am so incredibly excited for you guys. How much fun to be pregnant at the same time as one of your BFFs! My best friend and I are both pregnant right now as well (I’m due in January and she’s due in March) and it’s been so much fun! :)
I’m thrilled for you!
A says
WAHHHH! So excited for you guys!!!!
I’m expecting my first in early June, so I can’t wait to follow along with you this time (a few months behind).
Do you think you’ll do weekly or monthly bump photo project this time around. And will your photo project for the new baby be similar to Clara’s or do you think you’ll go a different direction?
Karlee Davidsson says
YAY! CONGRATS!!
On top of how happy I am for you all, I also want to say thank you for how you have handled all the “state of the uterus” questions and criticism. As someone that struggled for two years to get pregnant and has multiple losses, seeing everyone poke into your private life is infuriating to me! How you and Katie B. both handle such a sensitive subject is really great!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Karlee! Sending so much love your way. So sorry for your losses.

I don’t comment often, but have followed you guys for a while. I had to stop and say Congratulations! I am so happy for you guys! I agree with everyone else saying “Never been so happy for people I don’t really know” But you guys are so amazing, funny, kind, outgoing that we all cant help but love you guys, and feel like we are apart of the family. So congrats to another adorable Bean! Sending my hugs!
Stephanie says
Congrats!!!!!!!!!! :)
Anne G. says
CONGRATULATIONS!!!
I am glad to see that most people are thrilled for you and are sending you happy, loving thoughts. As for those few who just want to obsess over whether you photoshopped your belly or not, maybe they will learn some important lessons from your blog — like how to be kind. You guys are nothing but nice and loving and generous. It sucks to have to deal with people who have nothing better to do than criticize you for your choices. But you guys handle it with patience and grace, and you set an example for the rest of us. I know it must be hard some days, but hang in there and keep being your awesome fabulous selves, putting out love that hopefully will eventually reach the grumps, as well as the rest of us who LOVE, LOVE, LOVE you!!!
Kirsten says
Could not agree more!
Leah says
I am so happy for you!!!!!
If I read this post correctly, we can comment with questions for Friday’s post, so here we go:
1. How did you tell Clara?
2. How are you going to prepare Clara/are you worried about jealousy?
3. Will you tell us the gender?
Congratulations!!!!!
Leah says
****Meant to say the sex, not gender.
Nicole says
I love all of these questions!
Ann says
Congrats!! you and Katie B will have babies together!!!! God Bless your pregnancy and keep you all safe!
Heather says
Congratulations! So excited for you!
Taylor says
Congrats!
Laura says
ARE YOU AND KATIEEEEEEEEEEEE DUE AT THE SAME TIME???
Love it! Congrats! And hopefully John put some baby boy gems in there ;)
Emmy says
Congrats! Clara is going to be a great big sister! I’m sooo happy for you guys! Can’t wait to see what you will do for the nursery yay! For babies!!!
Jean (notsupermum) says
Whoa! Just came to add my congratulations and read some of those really intrusive and distasteful remarks from the other thread. So sorry you have to deal with that. Anyway, kudos to both of you for being so restrained, I think I’d have got a bit angry. Anyway, many congratulations – I can’t wait to see what you do with the nursery! x
Jerri says
Congratulations!!!! And yay for you guys ignoring all the negative nellies. The high road is always the direction one should take when there’s a fork in the road.
Totally off-topic, but I was looking around for an FAQ or a post on how you determine what to do first when you have a to-do list a mile long. We’ve packed up, sold our house, and closing on a new one later this month. I have no idea where to begin. If you can point me in the right direction, or if not, maybe write a post on that…
Thanks!!! And again, soooo happy for you guys!!!
Kari says
So so excited for you! Had to share with my friends that I’ve turned into fellow Young House Love followers! Clara and Burger are going to make such good big siblings! Will you find out if it’s a boy or girl bean ahead of time? Looking forward to seeing the nursery plans and wishing you a happy, healthy, morning-sickness free rest of your pregnancy!
Gwen, The Makerista says
How exciting! Congrats to you all! I look forward to following this part of your journey too!
