Progress has been made in the guest bathroom, folks. Which is good news since we’re less than 30 hours away from the arrival of Sherry’s mom and stepdad. Our first score was finding a shower curtain. Despite being burned by pattern in our last shower curtain attempt, we bought this guy at Target on Friday for about $20.
It definitely still looks kinda rough in there (still have to paint the walls and hang art, but we don’t think we’ll get to that before the inlaws arrive, uh, tomorrow). But getting back to the shower curtain, we think the pattern works much better because it’s bigger when it comes to the scale. The large medallions don’t compete with the tiny square tile on the walls and floor like the smaller scale yellow pattern in the last one we grabbed. The dark brown also introduced some nice contrast since the yellow tiles and off-white walls were sort of washing out the rest of the space. And because our old guest room bedding – which we plan to reuse – includes brown & white, while the walls in there are blue, this curtains sort of ties things together.
Then once we had the curtain finalized (and picked up a cheap white fabric liner to keep this guy from getting drenched, also from Target), we turned our attention to the bathmat – or the lack thereof. We originally brought home a brown one that matched the curtain but it was waaaay too dark. And walking into a bathroom to see a big brown spot on the floor wasn’t the most, um, clean looking choice.
So we went back to Target and picked up three other options for a little bath mat fashion show (Sherry may or may not have clapped and chanted “fashion show, fashion show” as we made our purchase). First we tried this square one that almost blended right into the floor completely.
No dice. It just looked kinda dirty and blah.
Our next choice was the polar opposite. We decided to try a more colorful rectangular mat to pick up those blue tones in the curtain (and the adjoining deep teal guest bedroom).
We didn’t really mind this one. It matched the curtain nicely and certainly would help us achieve our goal of bringing more color into the house.
But when we saw the third option we knew it was “the one.” It just felt crisp and tailored without being matchy-matchy. The stripes are a fun counterpart to the circles in the curtain (the white and brown tones in each one keeps them related in a fun mixed & matched way).
What can we say? I guess even though we’re embracing more color, we’re still suckers for crisp white stuff from time to time. Especially with there’s a white toilet, sink, and mirror in there (so it automatically ties right in). I guess when it comes to bathrooms, nothing beats clean white linens for us (99.9% of hotels that we’ve stayed at always have plush white towels and bathrobes, so we want our guests to feel like Casa Petersik is just as spa-like and inviting). Long story short, we had a bath mat fashion show winner. So we hoisted it up and sang For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow, removed the tag, and returned the others.
We also accomplished a few hardware updates yesterday. The most needed of which was a new toilet seat, since the old one boasted several chips in the lid and tears in the soft seat (and we’re not really fans of the soft toilet seat thing anyways). Here’s the least offensive shot of the old toilet seat that shows off some of those chips on the lid. We refrained from sharing the open lidded shots since we know some of you eat breakfast slash drink coffee while reading. You’re welcome.
Replacing a toilet seat isn’t rocket science, nor is it a very glamorous job. But I did my best to enjoy the process, and even flashed a thumbs up at the wife as she snapped this pic.
The whole switcheroo brought back memories of when I used a toilet seat for a 9th grade science project where I had to illustrate the anatomy of a mollusk (i.e. clams). In case you were wondering, toilet seats take well to dry erase markers. Yes, I really am that dorky. Go Team Mollusk.
We also replaced the old rusted shower head. It functioned just fine (the water pressure was great and there were thankfully no leaks to deal with) but it just didn’t look very nice.
So we sprung for the cheapest multi-setting shower head at Target (it was $14) in an effort to fancy things up a smidge.
And after using some serious elbow grease to get the old one off, the new one went on within 60 seconds. So shiny, right? I can even see myself in it.
Speaking of being in it, I actually took the shower for a test run shortly after this installation. I figured if anything weird or gross was going to happen in the first use of this shower, I wanted it to happen to me and not my mother-in-law. Fortunately things were all good. In fact, the water pressure is better in there than our bedroom. Lucky guests.
Last but not least was a quick zero-cost change. After removing the mirror on inside of the bathroom door (awkward!), we realize we were missing towel hooks… ’til we discovered them on the other side of the door while painting this weekend. Seriously, in the two months that we’ve lived here we never once closed the door to the guest bathroom to discover those towel hooks hiding back there until a few days ago. So I just unscrewed them from the back and reattached them to the inside of the door where they’ll actually be seen and used (and Sherry spackled and painted the leftover holes on the lesser seen back side of the door).
We’ve still got a few other things (like towels, and maybe some art) to make the room look more complete and guest-ready, but at least it’s completely functional now. Stay tuned for pics of the whole room after Sherry gets her kicks by adding a few accessories. And we still have to share our progress in the guest room. Which we’re most likely working away on as you read this post.
In the meantime, have you guys made any recent bathroom upgrades? Or do you have any tips to share about how you get a guest bathroom ready for guests (besides buying some shampoo, conditioner and toothpaste – which is already on our to-do list along with fluffy towels and a few washcloths)? This is our first time having to furnish a devoted guest bathroom that we don’t regularly use ourselves, so we’re definitely feeling kind of JV about the whole thing.

In the name of all things “small world” I replaced toilet seats in the whole house last night. how random. We are currently redoing out master bathroom from poo-brown (not a flattering bathroom color) to gray stripes. I have painted to boring white standard builder’s vanity to black and added knobs. We got rid of the bare-naked hollywood bulb (AKA landing zone) light bar and are waiting for our new oil rubbed bronze lighting to arrive this week (PS, csnstores.com, new favorite site… good prices and free shipping!). I painted wide gray on light gray stripes throughout and my husband took on removing and redoing caulking (ewww). I just changed the toilet seat last night. We also removed the builder’s huge mirror and are going to hang two matching homegoods framed mirrors this weekend. With a 6 month old, this project has taken me about 56 times longer than it used to! But I can’t wait to see the final product!

I’m a huge fan of having the travel essentials on hand (like in a hotel bathroom), either set out on a tray on the sink or under the sink in a basket. We have a little stockpile of hotel shampoos etc. that we liked at hotels we’ve stayed at (fancier stuff than what we use day to day). I also think it is nice to provide a pitcher of filtered water and a couple drinking glasses (if you guys drink filtered water… Houston water is questionable unless filtered). A candle and matches is always a nice relaxing touch.
I couldn’t read through all the comments before jetting off to pick up my toddler at school… sorry if I’m repeating stuff for the hundredth time.

Our main bathroom is also our “guest’ bathroom. Which we just gave a mini makeover. We were also contending with some yellow but on a much smaller scale, our counter top. The floor, tub, toilet are all in a tanish/ cream color. I brightened it up by painting our wainscoting, trim and vanity white. The walls are in a brown shade(sticks and stones by Sherwin Williams), that I love! I went with a crisp white shower curtain. The towels are white and yellow and I found a white and yellow flower rug. Now I just need somethings for the walls and I’m done. It looks better then I could have expected, if I don’t say so myself! hehe
Love the shower curtain and rug! The color in the guest room is awesome!!! I like how you tied the tealish color in with the bathroom!

We do not have a guest bath, but we do get a lot of company. The year we lived on the coast we had 8 weeks of company! Different guests at different times, not 8 weeks straight. The things I get asked for the most are dental floss, q-tips, nail clippers, safety pins, bobby pins/hair elastics, alarm clock, Tylenol, and Tums. We always keep body wash and face wash around, and extra toothbrushes and razors. If guests are staying for more than just a few days I like to make sure they have a laundry hamper and a city map. When we lived in a touristy area, pamphlets and coupons for local attractions. Also If they have kids, wet wipes and baby Tylenol are also good to have. We just try to put out some of these things before our company comes so they don’t have to ask. Oh, and definitely put the plunger in the bathroom, since it’s very embarrassing for them come and ask for it. Company always asks to use the computer and printer so a separate login is a good idea, then you’re not giving out and changing your password all the time.

I echo the small soaps, bath gels, shampoos, etc. for guests. I also recommend keeping a spare travel toothpaste in a drawer in case your guests leave theirs at home. Hooks of the back of doors are great for towels, jackets, etc. I also have a little plate on the dresser where guests can put jewerly, spare change, etc. so it doesn’t fall off. Finally, a spare blanket in an emplty drawer or trunk in case they get cold.
Peg says
Love your shower curtain…..We purchased the same one for our daughter and son-in-law for Christmas…..I like it so much at their house I may redo our guest bath just so I can use the same curtain.
By the way….I love your blog and am addicted to checking in on all my favorites every day. I’m a more traditional, french country, cottage kind of girl but I love what you’re doing to your home and appreciate all your projects. I can’t wait to see what you do with the fireplace wall and opening up the space to your “new” dining room. You guys “rock”! Blessings to your family!

I always save the sample-size shampoos and such and put them in a basket for guests so there is an assortment to choose from. We also keep the medicine cabinet in the guest room well stocked with small disposable cups (for toothbrushing), bandaids, neosporin, and all the major pain relievers (aspirin, Tylenol, Advil, Aleve) and let guests know to feel free to browse in there if they need anything. It’s no fun to have a little headache or cut yourself shaving and have to beg some Tylenol or a bandaid off your host.

Sometimes I think the thing I like the most about you guys is that you aren’t afraid to show the process—it gives me confidence to try. You don’t always get it right on the first try. great work (love the guest room color and these bathroom items go swimmingly!) :)

We are getting ready to sell our first house, and have been living with a master bathroom hardware identity crisis for the last five years. Seriously, every hardware finish you can imagine was in that bathroom so we changed out door pulls (were gold, and then spray painted brushed nickle, which was scratching off, to reveal the shiny gold underbelly) sink faucets (were gold and chrome) light fixtures (brass) all to match the chrome faucets in the bathtub. We did the toilet seat too, but mostly because someone put a white seat on an almond toilet. :/
Good luck getting yours ready for the parents/in-laws!

Looking good. Can’t wait for the final result. I don’t see all the yellow tile as too much of an issue. As long as you update everything else (fixtures, art, curtain, etc) it will look good. Can you tell yellow is my favorite color? We just recently remodeled our guest/hall bath and I really like the results. Still not 100% complete with the accessories since I had to leave to school. I will definitely share on Facebook once I get back home and take some decent pictures.
P.S. I live in Williamsburg and once I complete all my projects I would love to have yall crash. :) If yall want.

I like the floor mat you ended up choosing. The blue one coordinated nicely with the shower curtain, but against the tile floor, it just looks too “grandma”!!

Love the direction you’re headed in there! Only other things I make sure to put in a guest bath….extra toilet paper (your guests will be mortified if they have to ask for more), and a spare towel or two if there’s room (preferably a darker colored one in case makeup is going to smudge off on your pretty white spa towels). So basically stock up on TP and maybe a couple brown hand towels just in case.

I have the same shower curtain in my bathroom and actually went with the blue bath mat in picture 2 along with blue towels! My bathroom has more tan tiles than yellow like yours but the emphasis on the blue really helped to down play the pink that was threatening to peak out of the tan tile!

I just had thought….what if you painted the bathroom wall the same color as the tile?
It’s either a really good idea because it will make it look more uniform. Or it’s a really bad idea and would be too yellow. :( or :)

I had a 1960’s ranch and the only bathroom had green tiles (not the avocada or the really green-green ones – just in between)halfway up the walls. I repainted the walls from mocha brown to the same color as the tile, found a shower curtain (at Tarjay!) with the same green and pulled it all together with dark purple (also in the shower curtain). Made the bathroom look so much bigger.
Sarah says
I love the yellow tiles and the shower curtain. You all did a great job bringing in the teal to the bathroom.
We had a white rugs for one of our bathrooms, but they looked so dirty between the seeminingly every-other-day bleachings, that I gave up and went with a tan rug. Since this is just a guest room rug, however, it shouldn’t be to much to keep it nice and white.
I’m really glad you (and your commenters) brought up reglazing. This is something I plan to look into for our black and white kitchen tile. So, thanks for the tip!

We like to keep some things stocked for guests that are easy to forget. ie – toothbrushes, toothpaste, disposable razors, travel size deodorant etc. We keep these items in a linen drawer in our guest bath, but even just a nice basket somewhere in the suite would be good. We like to have the items where it is obvious that it is for our guests, we don’t want them to feel like they have to ask to use the items.

We (I guess I can’t take credit here….my husband did all the work!) just gutted our bathroom before Christmas and before baby arrived (late January). It is still a project in the works, although it is almost done. I actually bought the same shower curtain awhile back, although mine wasn’t on sale (darn) and I’m super excited to get it up in the bathroom. We are also trying to finish the bathroom before my mom comes next week. It is amazing what a little pressure (visitors) can force you to get done! I’m interesting to see what you all do with the bathroom and curtain compared to what we do. Keep up the great work! I love to check out your website….especially now that I’m home with baby!

I didn’t read all the replies, so I don’t know if anyone mentioned this already, but one thing I plan to leave in my guest room once it is completed is a pad of paper, some pens, a few maps of the area or directions to places of interest, and maybe even a few menus of local restaurants/take out places. If your area is big enough to have a local magazine or travel section published on it, that’s a great option too.
Although most of the people who will stay with us won’t be off on their own too much, since the point of coming is to actually visit with my family, I always think it’s a nice touch to have these extras if they do have some free time.
Hope you all have a great visit! And I love the shower curtain, by the way – the turquoise & brown are such a nice combination.

It’s coming along! I love how the bold shower curtain at least mutes the yellow tile a bit from being “the” most visible feature of the room. We recently finished painting our master bathroom. I have to say I love the shower curtain. I think with the yellow tile I would have been like “ugh what goes with this other than a simple white curtain.” Which white is what is in both of my baths currently because they are basic standrad grade with blue walls. I love love white- so I thought I would love the white bath mat too.. but I am drawn to the blue one also. That would have been a hard choice for me on which to keep and take back. I am typically drawn to white because I love the spa hotel like aspect of it.
In our guest bath I always have an orchid on the vanity for some fresh and organic added- also because I love them. I also place a small basket with lotions, different soaps, q-tips, cotton balls, extra toothbrush just in case..etc. The things you always forget to pack but use while in the bath room other than towels, soap and conditioner. I also always have extra toilet paper and magazines in a seagrass basket close by so the guests know where they are. I hate to be staying somewhere and have to ask for the basics. It is always nice to know where things are. Hope you enjoy your visit with the parents!!

Love the shower curtain and the rug. Excellent choices! Yay Tar-hay!
When we have guests come, we make sure to have plenty of bubble bath, corn dogs and ice cream…they are usually our neieces and nephews. But when my in-laws come to visit, they get a basket of stuff. Hotel shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, new body poufs and whatever else I can find cheap or free…and we let them use the good towels :)

We just had house guests for the first time in our new house and it was beyond exciting. We have to share the master bath though since the guest bath isn’t built quite yet. My favorite lil thing that was done for me when I was a guest was take a tray (like you might have on an ottoman)and place new magazines that the guest would enjoy reading. It’s also really nice to see a plant in the bathroom. Also I see you have fans in Clara’s room and your master bedroom. Where are they from and do they make a nice hum? My husband is a fan addict for the noise so I’m on the hunt for a cute one!

Target is the BEST for shower curtains! I checked out many cheap and not-so-cheap options before settling on my Target curtain and LOVE it! It melds (yes, I used melds) so well with the new guest room wall color.
Thanks for your posts, your ideas, your inspiration! I didn’t do much other than paint walls before following your blog and now my boyfriend and I have not only painted inside and out, but refinished an UG-ly piece of furniture and tackled our first big job (backsplashed the kitchen!).
Most recently he was trying to make some old window treatments work and I said–forget this, I think we could make some!! haha, thanks for everything!

I wonder if the darkness of the shower curtain would be an issue. We bought a dark colored shower curtain for our guest bathroom and my mom complained that you couldn’t see anything. (The overhead light is outside of the tub.) I took a shower in there and sure enough, it was like the light wasn’t even on! We ended up buying a new white colored one.

We have a light in our shower (as well as one above the sink) so thankfully it’s not all dark and cave-like in there with the curtain (it totally would have been without the light since the opening is so thin).

That’s the bath mat I would have picked also. Seems to pop in that space. Funny, these small changes make it feel totally new. I can’t wait to see what you’ve done with the guest room.
I’m still working on the same ol’ powder room I’ve been chipping away at for months. Why, oh why, do these things take so much longer than anticipated? You two make it look so easy.

Someone suggested an air freshener, but sometimes it’s awkward to hear someone spraying away in the baño after a slightly-longer-than-normal visit in there. Also, I personally don’t love the smell of most air fresheners or potpourris. I tend to choose a nice-smelling, pretty candle (don’t forget to leave matches in there!)and your guest can use it for pleasure or utility in masking undesirable smells. Just a thought!

When I had a house, the guest bedroom and bath were Polynesian themed…even though they were only visiting GA, they could feel like they were really away :) In addition to all of the toiletries, empty closet with hangers, etc,…one thing I did was to leave a small, fun, journal type book in the guest room for guests to share their memories in their own words with us. It was always so nice to go back and read what they had to say.
Ashley says
I absolutely LOVE the brown and blue curtain with the pale yellow! I have been working on a yellow bedroom (which serves as my office/guest bedroom) and have been toying with the idea of mixing in some brown and blue. I was originally going with yellow, grey, black and white… BUT… You have added to the convincing that maybe I need to warm it up with some brown… Thanks for the INSPIRATION!!!

Not exactly stylish, but I always appreciate having a power strip to recharge the phone, camera, ipod, laptop, etc. It seems outlets are often behind dressers or beds (necessary for the bedside lamp, so you don’t have to get up to turn off the light) and it’s awkward to be moving someone’s furniture looking for a plug. The power strip can be discreetly tucked under the bed, but I appreciate having all my rechargers in one place, so I don’t accidentally leave one behind.

When we have guests over, I like to leave out a little goodie basket for them filled with water bottles, granola and candy bars, grab bags of chips, fruit, etc. for midnight snacking. (Very similar to what you’ll find in a hotel minibar.)
If our guests aren’t familiar with the area, I’ll put some guides or books about the area. (I ordered some for free from virginia.org) Another cute idea is to put out sleep masks, slippers and robes, but that’s a little over the top for me… ;)

I see that some other readers have also suggested that the brown looks too warm against that cheery yellow.. Its has that cheery vibe and all the colors that can compliment you guest bed/bath color scheme:teal, brown, yellow, green oh my! Yet it does not look crowded with color. Then you can paint your bathroom Mocha. If you paint it Mocha with the current brown curtain then it will be way too dark. Just my opinion.. loved everything you guys have done so far…but with this one.. umm..felt the need to advise haha.

I love the combo! You guys are lucky to be within driving distance of so many great stores. I live in a rural area where the choice is WalMart… kohls.. walmart… Not that I’m complaining!
Your blog has been so helpful for me in the past few weeks. As a ridiculously generous and completely unexpected wedding present, my parents are allowing my fiance, who is a contractor, to convert a barn that they own into a house for us to live in. It is awesome and I feel completely lucky, but it needs to be done by April 14, giving us 2.5 months to put our lives on hold to git er done.
I’ve been devouring your archives for just about every project. We need to paint our concrete floor? You have a page for that! How do I choose paint colors for 8 rooms, all at once? You have a page on color continuity! I’m tasked with painting the entire house in 4 days time? You have a tutorial on how to paint a room, too! (Can you tell most of my jobs are of the painting variety, since by fiance hates to paint? haha.)
Seriously, this is all stuff I’m totally unfamiliar with and it has been extremely reassuring to read your entries. I love the message of “we’re just regular people, and if we can do it, so can you.” Thanks so much!

I am a bit confused. Before you guys came along, there was a mirror on one side of the bathroom door and hooks on the other side. If you were standing in the bathroom and shut the door, was it a mirror or hooks that you were looking at? And does this mean the bathroom door swings into the bathroom or out of it when opened? I am just having a difficult time picturing it! Thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
Hooks were on the outside of the door and the mirror was on the inside. The door swings out into the bedroom. Essentially if you were in the bathroom with the door shut you’d see yourself sitting on the toilet in the full length mirror on the door. Awkward!
