Pretty much from day one (even before we learned that the bean was actually a beanette) I was dreaming of painting the nursery walls a fun pear green while taking the ceiling from bland ol’ white to a light aqua color. But somehow saying “green walls with a blue ceiling” conjures up all sorts of scary Trading Spaces episodes so even my dear hubby wasn’t getting my “vision” until we broke out the paint swatches and I was able to explicitly show him what I meant. There’s a tip for you ladies: many people (especially guys who don’t speak “interior decorating”) are visual creatures. So saying something like “I want to paint the side tables black” can be a lot less effective (ie: scary for a dude) than showing your man an image of a room with black side tables that you know will calm his nerves about the whole deal.
Sure enough, as soon as I whipped out a soft celery-pear-ish tone for the walls and showed John how sweet a subtle and dreamy aqua would be on the ceiling (especially with the white crown molding between them to really set them off) he was on board. Then we just had to get into our trusty painting clothes and finish clearing out the room so it was ready for the big transformation (and speaking of big, check out that belly- it’s quite a feat with four more months of baby-carrying left).
But back to my favorite subject: paint. Just like we did in this old ceiling painting post, we taped all of our potential ceiling paint chips on the actual ceiling so we could see how they would look in that light (colors look different on ceilings than they do when you hold them up to the wall since light reflects differently off a horizontal plane). We decided the swatch on the far right was too bright, the swatch to the left of that was too light and the swatch to the left of that one was juuuuust right (while the swatch on the far left was a bit too muddy). So that’s how we honed in on our final ceiling color after hunting through a bunch of swatches and taping up the ones we liked best. Oh and the winning swatch was called Regency Pale by True Value by the way.
As for selecting the wall color, that was pretty simple. I’ve always loved Celery Sticks by Glidden (it has happy golden undertones and so much personality without overwhelming or sucking the light out of a small space). So of course I was giddy about finally having the perfect opportunity to use it to create a fun and cheerful nursery thanks to the little person that I’m busy growing.
We also decided it was time to take some Mythic paint for a spin- not only because I’m knocked up (and shouldn’t be painting with anything full of chemicals and VOCs) but also for the sake of the baby (since regular paint can off-gas for one to even three years after it’s applied!). Sure it’s $40 a gallon (while a lot of the cheaper Lowe’s and Home Depot stuff is around $25) but it’s known to be the cream of the no-VOC crop thanks to the great coverage, the wide range of amazing colors, and their completely non-toxic and mommy/baby friendly formula. So we hit up EcoLogic (one of our favorite local haunts for all things green) with both of our pre-selected swatches in hand.
We figured we’d hold them up to the Mythic paint deck to select something as similar as possible in both colors but we had no idea that Mythic could actually do color matching (but not with a machine, they store a plethora of other brand’s formulas in their database for easy replication- without the VOCs). The only catch was that our swatch from True Value was one of the brands that they didn’t have in their system and Celery Sticks by Glidden was too new (just introduced a few months back) so it wasn’t yet in the database. Not to worry, we actually found two extremely similar (if not identical) Mythic colors in their deck. For the ceiling we landed on Adanna Aire (in a flat finish) and for the walls we ended up with Autumn Bloom (in an easy-care eggshell finish).
When we proudly returned home after purchasing our new nursery paint we remembered that the kind folks at Frog Tape had actually sent a few rolls our way so we could give it a try. We’ve heard so many good things about their mad scientist tape (which has a patented formula that creates a “micro-barrier” on the edge of the tape when paint comes in contact with it, which seals it and makes bleeding a virtual impossibility). Isn’t that some Bill Nye The Science Guy technology? We were intrigued to see what that magical green tape could really do…
We’ve always been fans of cutting in with a brush (specifically, a special little brush that I love) but we must admit that taping the crown molding off didn’t take very long…
… and it really made painting the edges of the ceiling go a lot faster than it would have if we were carefully edging by hand with a brush.
Oh and we interrupt all the tape talk to bring you our sad little nursery closet. We’re actually very lucky to have this pathetic little enclave since this room was originally a dining room so the fact that we could convert it into a bedroom (thanks to an already existent closet) was great. Too bad it looked like this. Wop wop.
We took off the door before we started painting (we’re planning a cute little closet facelift complete with a curtain that we can push to the side since the door swings out into the room and interferes with the main door to the nursery- grrrr).
And it was actually John’s fabulous idea to take the light aqua color from the ceiling and add it to the inside of the closet for a bit of fun. Isn’t he smart? The whole time he was painting the closet I was watching in awe and telling our baby girl what a decorating genius her daddy is (yes I talk to my stomach just as often as I talk to our chihuahua).
Here’s a sneak peek of the closet in progress, but we actually have to add a ton of baskets and bars (and the closet curtain of course) so stay tuned for another closet post when we get to that stage of the ol’ nursery makeover.
But back to the Frog Tape. After we finished painting two coats of soft aqua on the ceiling and in the closet it was time to remove the tape around the molding (we’re all about removing tape when the paint is still wet so it doesn’t peel any dried paint off with it when it comes down). And ladies and gentlemen we can definitively proclaim that we saw a sincere and amazing difference between blue painter’s tape and Frog Tape. It really does create a much crisper edge with zero bleeding or stippling. Seriously, it was such a clean line that it looked like we painted the ceiling before adding the white molding (which is always the goal). In short: it definitely would have come in handy for the horizontal stripes that we added to our half bathroom a while back and we’re extremely glad we had a chance to test drive it for our little nursery paint project.
So here’s the room after we removed the tape. Isn’t the soft blue ceiling sweet? But it’s only halfway there.
John was on a taping roll so he decided to keep going. Within about ten minutes he had taped off the bottom of the crown molding and also around the windows, doors, and baseboards. Then it was time for some warm pear green paint…
Ta-daaaa! Isn’t it a sweet and playful combination?
Oh and it bears mentioning that this photo was taken at night without any natural light (and wasn’t color corrected or anything)- so it’s a bit harsher and less subtle than it is in real life (especially in natural light). You’ll have to stick around for some daytime pics to really see it in all of its green and blue glory. Once we layer everything into the room (furniture, art, playful patterned curtains, a rug, a chandelier, etc) the walls will be the perfect cheerful-but-not-too-scary backdrop. And we love that it works with the rest of our home’s color palette thanks to the blue ceiling (which really relates to the soft gray-blue in our bedroom and kitchen) while the green ties into everything from our guest bedroom’s bright green headboard to our more-neutral-but-still-taupey-green bathroom. We like to think of our home’s newly defined color scheme as “sea glass inspired” since it’s full of soft creams, sandy neutrals, serene blues, and a variety of greens- all colors of old weathered glass that can wash up on the beach.
So that’s a little update on our nursery progress. And we’ll toss in this sneak peek of a few of the fun accessories (fabric and a cozy area rug) that we snagged to layer into our freshly painted space. Stay tuned for those details coming soon.
And since everyone seems to love seeing our house when it’s messy, we snapped this photo of our living room’s console table which was bogged down with everything that used to be in the nursery (namely the nursery closet). The good news is that it has all since found a new home, but we know you love seeing our house all crazy-like, so enjoy!
And while we’re on the subject of painting, we’d love to know what color you guys gravitate towards when it comes to nurseries. Whether you’ve already painted one (or five) or just dream about whipping one up someday, we’d love to know what hues tickle your fancy. Pale pink? Brown and blue? Bright rainbow stripes? Spill the beans.

My daughter is due mid-February with a girl (Zoe) and she will go in the same room as first daughter (Reese). The room is painted a lovely green, with brown velvet curtains. The colors of the bedding are green, brown and pink. Somehow it works. You look great by the way Sherry! –Delores

Omg! I love it, I absolutely do! I would’ve never thought to have combine those colors. I thought it was going to look boyish as I was reading it but then I saw the fabrics and I love it for a girl! My son’s room is just a simple baby blue. We live in an apt. where the ceilings are popcorned (not my favorite thing) so we left the ceiling alone with it’s cheap contractor’s paint. It feels a little unfinished but it’s still a little boys room with a nautical theme. I will definitely try something like this, if and when I have another baby! Lol. I may even ask you guys for color advice Love the room good luck with your beanette ♥
Heather @ Brace Yourselves says
My twins are a boy and a girl so I need to go with something gender neutral. We have a built in bookcase on the largest wall in the room so the enclave that the changing table is on got painted a punchy lime green. The other three walls are a muted khaki/beige. The room colors are lime green, chocolate brown, a little white, a tiny bit of buttery yellow. It all flows really well and screams baby with out screaming baby boy or baby girl!
brandi says
I really love the color combo. It’s very fresh and sweet. I plan to have a gender neutral nursery when we start a family (hopefully soon) for two reasons:
1. I don’t plan of finding out the sex (I know I’m crazy)
2. I want the nursery to be able to work for multiple children.
I’ve always wanted to have green walls and a blue ceiling, white furniture, and pops of bright colors! Reminds me of a field of grass, the blue sky, and beautiful flowers.
Roeshel says
I love your vision. The colors are gorgeous together! I haven’t painted a nursery so no opinion. I am about to paint a bedroom using Mythic though and I’m excited to give it a try once I decide on a color scheme. They do have TONS to choose from. (Painting the living room first within the week though.)
Looking forward to more nursery progress and the reveal!

Wow you guys, I love the colors! So interesting too to paint he ceiling a color other than white. Love it! Can’t wait to see more!
P.S. Thanks for your help in my bathroom paint striping project. It has turned out really great! I absolutely love the look! Thanks for your inspiration!

I’m having a girl(due may 1st!) & yesterday I went to pick out the paint, which I wanted pink. I already have a little boy, whose nursery & big boy room is pale blue on top the crown molding & green below(i believe the color is called corn husk green by behr. I love almost all colors for nurseries besides the typical blue & pink, but I also love them as much. Can’t wait to see the nursery finished.

I’m a huge fan of blue in nurseries, boy or girl. It’s such a soothing color, which is why I used it in our master bedroom as well! I actually used a slightly punchy, bright aqua, because when the sun hits it, it instantly makes me happy to start another day.
I have SO many ideas for nurseries, i could never settle on just one to do for myself! Here’s a couple of my favorites I came up with for family (ok, and myself!):

I can’t wait to see your nursery evolve. Not just putting it together, but as baby beanette grows!

I’m having a girl and am expecting 1 day after sherry. My nursery plan is to use some inspiration from the dwell owl bedding, which has turquoise, green, light steel blue, brown and gray (http://www.dwellstudio.com/kids-room-decor/dwellstudio-collections/owls-sky-shower-curtain.html). I’m just buying the sheets and changing pad cover since the line is expensive, and matching with a cheaper target crib skirt in brown dots. I’m also painting the dresser bright green as inspired by a reader redesign on YHL. I was thinking of keeping the walls neutral with a shade similar to Glidden’s sand white, in a No VOC paint of course. But I am open to suggestions for other light, neutral wall color.
Carrie says
We’re in the middle of baby room mania right now… my daughter’s nursery is currently a pale green/yellow (very similar to Celery Sticks) with a beige and pink stripe we created with paint and moulding.
BUT, since I have another baby on the way (a boy, due in May) we’re moving my daughter out of the nursery to make room for the little guy. That means we’ll change the stripe to a pale blue and focus on the accessories to make it more boy themed. However, I’m stuck on what to do in my daughter’s new room. I’m thinking pale green with pink accents, but haven’t found the perfect shade yet. I want to do a modern garden theme in there. It’ll be interesting, to say the least!
Karrie says
I love it! So bright and fresh! I love blue and green together. The fabric you picked is fabulous. Did you pick it out before picking the wall colors? I’m really excited to see this room come together. Oh, and if I had to choose a color for a nursery, I would have to pick aqua.
Karrie says
Ahh, nevermind. I just read your answer in a previous comment. :)

We just painted ours the other night – We’re also having a girl, and decided to go with “garbanzo bean” yellow walls and white accents – so soft and feminine!

You two (and your little beanette baby bump) are so adorable! I love that you chose a gender-neutral color scheme for your nursery. We don’t have any babies, but when we do, I’d love to break out of the girly pink/boy blue mold. Oh, and green is my favorite color.
Sara says
WOW you guys, that’s going to look so cute and playful when it’s all done! What a great idea to paint the ceiling. Thanks for doing all of your projects so we have the confidence to do them also. :)

I LOVE that green! I’ll be grabbing a sample pot of that for the dining room after work for sure. And that’s the shade of aqua I’ve been painting a lot of our accesories (“C’mon, Honey, I have to paint it- it’s smoke damaged!”)
Our nurseries were non-descript until the children’s personalities became distict, but we’re having a lot of fun right now letting our teenagers choose their room colors in our post-inferno decorating flurry. The boys want an Asian theme, with a deep red wainscoating and then black chalkboard paint above the chair rail so they can storyboard their website and work out math problems. Savannah has chosen shades of blue, and we’ll be doing paint effects to give her an underwater feel. It’s fun to see their tastes evolve, and it’s nice that they consult so heavily with me. You’ll find that out when you buy Baby’s First Paintbrush!
By the way, Sherry, your tummy is adorable.

It looks great! I noticed that you guys painted over your vents in the room. Ours are still white and I worry that painting over would create lots of drips. Any suggestions for painting over the glossy white metal?
Thanks!

YoungHouseLove says
Hey Shiri,
The vent in the nursery was already painted so it was pretty obvious to us that we should just repaint over that with the new wall color. As for how to avoid drips, we always do it with a brush so we have more control and just go over everything a few times to catch any drips before they dry. Metal is actually great with paint (it really sticks well, just like painting a wall). Hope it helps!

i know exactly what you mean about guys being less visual when it comes to design… from now on i find pictures of everything before even talking to him about doing anything in the house! LOL.
your nursery is going to be beautiful! i LOVE those colors together, i always love seeing girls rooms in colors other than pink. i can’t wait to see the nursery come along so i can steal ideas from you :)
we rented while our little guy was a baby- so we didn’t paint his white walls :( but now that bought a home just before he turned 2 we decided to go for a brighter color than we would have for a new born; its a bright green- a color pulled from his monster themed bedding, white trim and curtains, and birch furniture to tame is a bit. and his closet doors are painted with black chalkboard paint… its a fun colorful room! i am currently 19 weeks prego with our second and find out next week what were having so we can decide on colors soon!

I like lime green, deep teal, and tan as nursery colors.

I read somewhere that it’s good feng shui to paint a nursery a skin tone, whether it be a deep brown or a tan or a cream. Luckily, we had painted the rest of our house in Benjamin Moore’s Nantucket Beige (which is a skin tone), so we just used the paint we had. Here’s some pictures. I love it =)

We are almost done painting our nursery and we’ve chosen a deep chocolatey brown, a pale sage green, and a lavender of sorts (all purchased as Oops paint because we are on a REALLY tight budget). We’ll be leaving the ceiling and all of the trim white and painting one of the walls all three colors (either wide and narrow stripes or big squares- the jury is still out on that one). My dad is making the crib and the rest of the furniture will be white and/or maple colored (to match the crib).
I can’t wait to see how your nursery comes together… ours has been a long process.

We recently painted our baby boy’s friend grey-blue, Behr’s Pewter Mug. Nothing else is in there yet, but we’re definitely planning on sticking to soft, serene colors to soothe soon-to-be-frazzled mommy!

Delurking because we just painted out little guy’s room (due in mid March) yesterday:
We used a Disney (by Behr) paint color, ‘Christopher Robin’s Swing’ with a satin sheen, it’s a light sage green. We are going to for a neutral color scheme: greens, browns, khakis, with a bit of blue thrown in for good measure. It came about a bit lighter than I had initially hoped, but it’s not different enough that I feel like painting it again, and it looks great with the bright white baseboard and the darker laminate hardwood flooring we just installed. Besides, the room gets the least sun exposure and I was afraid a much darker green would be too dark.
We are considering breaking up all the green with a chair rail and some bead boarding on the lower half of the wall, but since it’s coming up so fast and my nesting mode is starting to be in full effect. Good luck guys!

You are seriously looking adorable with your baby belly Sherry!

Taylor (The House on Penny Lane) says
It looks great, guys! I love that you’re not afraid to paint the 5th wall in a room (the ceiling). I’d like to try Frog Tape the next time I’m painting to see how I like it. I heard of a professional tip from a friend about getting clean paint lines – using blue painter’s tape to attach a piece of paper to whatever you’re avoiding (baseboard, for example) then put a thin line a paintable caulk over the edge of the tape where it meets the wall. Then when you paint, you can go crazy and not have to worry about your roller slipping past the tape or paint seeping under the tape.
One question regarding tape – I’ve heard so many times about peeling the tape off while the paint is still wet. Does that work even when you’ve done multiple coats?
As far as nursery colors go, my husband and I aren’t quite ready for beans of our own, but I have put some thought into what color(s) the nursery will be. We just bought our house in the fall and I have started the paint selection process. After painting our guest bathroom Sherwin-Williams Worldly Gray (you can see my blog post about it here: http://thehouseonpennylane.wordpress.com/2009/12/03/rob-takes-a-night-off/), I decided I wanted to paint most of my rooms that color, which includes the future nursery. I think the Worldly Gray is a nice light, warm gray that would be perfectly gender neutral AND pair nicely with whatever other colors we throw in there.
YoungHouseLove says
Taylor- We definitely peel the tape off as soon as we’re done with our last coat and since we started our second coat pretty much as soon as we were done with the first one, nothing had a lot of time to cure up and dry super securely by the time we were peeling. Hope it helps!
Laura- We think you could still totally do two fun colors even with textured walls and without crown molding! Just be sure they related to each other somehow (try not to do anything too high contrast- like red & white or black & yellow). You’re right about a lighter shade of the wall color working well on the ceiling so that’s an option, but you could also pick slightly different tones like soft blue and green or soft pink and orange and it would still most likely look amazing. Hope it helps!

Hi Sherry (and John)! The nursery paint look gorgeous. I’ve got a question – we live in Arizona and all of the walls in our home are textured (typical of homes in the southwest). Do you think we could still get away with painting two very different and bold colors without crown molding, and with textured walls? I’m afraid that without the white molding separating the colors it will look sloppy.
Maybe instead I could work with two colors from the same paint color strip and keep the ceiling either one shade lighter or darker than the walls…
Any ideas?

Great colors and cute fabric! I was going to post a while ago, but forgot to tell you what paint I used for my nursery:
http://www.devinecolor.com/paint.html
it goes on like thinned yogurt and is VOC free and the paint swatches are actual paint blobs dotted on a card by hand! I know you are all done already, but just in case you have any other painting projects in the future.
and I totally think at least once a week there should be a new “wop, wop” feature of something in your house. Hilarious! thanks too, for the “messy” pic–how funny and weird to see your house like that. ps. Sherry, you look GREAT! :)
Jamie says
Our original theme was brown, pink, red, and green (it looked good, I promise) but I came home one day and my husband had surprised me by painting the whole nursery a gorgeous sky blue. We worked with it and I decided to infuse tons of color–it has made a cheery, light space that feels like playing in a treehouse.

LOVE your color combo, so fresh and modern for a baby girl room. I was wondering… if you were going to use pink in a girls room, what other colors might you pair it with to keep it modern/unexpected and avoid the ubiquitous pink/green and pink/blue schemes that are so common? For some reason I just default to beige.

Ooh good question! We love pink and turqoise and orange together. It’s such a fun punchy combo. Pink also looks great with tons of white and dark wood furnishings. Sort of kid-elegance if you will. I love the colors! They are great. We are expecting a girl in May also. I am leaning towards green and purple(maybe more like lavender?) I did find this amazing limey green rug from Ikea and am trying to find the best way to decorate the room with that in it. My husband is in the military and we are currently living in base housing… not sure we want to paint. Any ideas on accessorizing the room so that the white walls don’t wash everything out? HELP!!

Hey Shelly,
Just rely on large scale art, an area rug, bedding, and curtains to add tons of color and personality. Long time blog following…first time commenting!
Love the colors. I also think it’s great that you’re using non-traditional “girl” colors. I’m due in a week and our nursery is *almost* finished. We went with a pale yellow for the walls. The rest of the details took on a very feminine feel very quickly (Heather Bailey fabrics), but I love our DIY blue chandelier and lampshade (used your instructions on how to cover a lampshade with fabric).
We’ve kept all of our ceilings white, but if we were to change it up ever, I may have to look into Frog Tape. I much prefer to cut in by hand over using the blue stuff!
We, too, have a very small, tight closet to work with (our house was built in 1941). Taking the door off would not have given us any more room, but we did have to get quite creative with the shelving and baskets since the closet walls are surrounded by the adjacent bathroom’s pipes and a heat vent that goes to the 2nd floor. We purchased the Hemnes dresser from Ikea which helps with the clothing storage since the drawers are so big.
Anyway, it’s not done just yet, but I posted a few sneak peak photos on our blog. Once we’re done I’ll post again…it’s been our little project for the past few months and we’re so excited to introduce our daughter to her room when she arrives…any day!

Even without natural light the colors look fun adn yet calming. And hold on to your frog tape!! We painted our bathroom not all that long ago and went to 3 different stores to be told – “we used to carry that, but everyone still bought the blue, so we dont anymore.” ugh.

Oh Sherry & John, this nursery is going to be absolutely darling!!! I love the fabric, it is almost the exact same as some of my throw pillows in our living room ~ the blue/green combo looks like it was made for your house! I’ve been poking around your blog for a few months now and have been totally inspired to get my booty moovin on some DIY projects I’ve been sitting on for too long! Thanks Guys!! Anyways I just had to share that the first time I visited I had a little chuckle with myself because I had painted my tiny little entry way AND my bathroom in identical stripes to your powder room, 10 years ago, before we even moved in… Funny right? Well, here’s where it gets weird. My daughter turned 12 in September so I decided it was time to get away from the pink pink pink and bring things up todate with something that can carry her through to college (fingers crossed)… So what did I do? I think you can probably guess… Grasshopper green walls and the palest blue ceiling… Weird!!!

We did our nursery in very similar colors, light teal, lime green and white. It was based on bedding by migi called splash. I even repained an armoire with bubbles in the matching colors. Can’t wait to see the finished results!!!

Ooohhhh, you’re such a tease! I love the wall and ceiling colors. They are beautiful. I can’t wait for the next nursery post to see what you are going to do with that gorgeous fabric.
My husband and I are trying to start our family this year so we’ve been talking about color schemes in a nursery and I think we’ve narrowed it down to a boy and girl color scheme. For a boy, we like pale gray walls with dark wood and red accents. For a girl, we like a light aqua or turquoise for the walls with white furniture and pops of pink or purple accents.

This looks great so far!!
I have two questions …
1. What exactly is VOC – you’ve talked about it a lot before but I’m not sure what chemicals exactly are in paint.
2. Have you thought about ripping out the molding on the closet and expanding it a little bit? Or are you going to bring in furniture.
Love the color scheme!!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Sarah,
1. VOC stands for volatile organic compounds, which are present in many paints and stains. They’re potentially harmful and thought to be toxic for both people and the environment (they’re not recommended for pregnant women or babies since exposure to them over a long period of time can lead to compromised health effect for adults, children and developing infants). If you google “VOC” I’m sure you’ll find tons of info on the subject, for instance here’s the wikipedia write up about ’em: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volatile_organic_compound
2. We actually can’t expand the closet since our heating ducts are to the left of it (and can’t be moved) and our living room fireplace is to the right of it (which also can’t be moved). Not to worry, we’ll be bringing in a lot of storage pieces! Stay tuned…
