Ocean Jasper is a beautiful stone known for its rarity, soothing powers, and colorful spherical patterns. It’s prized by collectors due to its unique history and limited availability since the one and only place it exists on Earth is closed to future mining.
Ocean Jasper comes in a variety of colors including green, gray, pink, blue, yellow, and white. Its patterns range from wispy banding to bold colorful orbs, meaning no two pieces are alike. It’s typically sold as polished stones, crystal towers, or jasper jewelry. I have both a large tower and a small polished heart.
What Is Ocean Jasper?
Ocean Jasper is a rare form of jasper found only on remote coastlines in Madagascar. Jaspers are any members of the chalcedony quartz family that are opaque (translucent chalcedony is called agate). Ocean Jasper is a form of orbicular jasper known primarily for its beautiful multicolored spherical pattern (aka “orbs”). It is prized for its rarity, the spiritual meaning that many believe it has, and its captivating appearance.
My large tower pictured above is a less common color of Ocean Jasper, but I do own a small polished heart stone that is a more typical greeny gem.

What Is Ocean Jasper’s Meaning?
Ocean Jasper is said to have metaphysical benefits, including many of the same ones you might expect from being near water. It is said to have a calming, comforting, and soul-nourishing energy that encourages one to “go with the flow.” Because of this, some believe it promotes better mood, less stress, and greater emotional stability. It is also said to help open your heart. People turn to ocean jasper when discussing sensitive topics or working to repair a relationship since its gentle energy promotes smooth sailing over life’s rough waters.
Crystal Properties
Here are some of the metaphysical properties that Ocean Jasper is believed to assist with:
- Comfort and calm
- Positive thinking
- Emotional stability
- Better self-expression
- Higher self-esteem
- Strengthening relationships
- Washing away negativity
Why Is It Called Ocean Jasper?
Ocean Jasper gets its name both from its appearance and the location in which it’s found. It is exclusively found along the ocean coastline in northeastern Madagascar and was only visible during low tide. Some also say that its orbital patterns and veining resemble ripples or waves in the ocean. The name is trademarked and can only accurately be used for stone mined in Madagascar.
What Is Ocean Jasper Also Known As?
Ocean Jasper is often called orbicular jasper, but the terms are not interchangeable. Orbicular jasper is a general term for any variety of jasper that contains multicolored “orbs” in its pattern. These spherical inclusions form during a process called orbicularization. Fluids carrying minerals permeate volcanic ash and tuffs, forming quartz or feldspar crystal in the rock that its signature orb pattern.
Orbicular jasper is found in other parts of the world, including the United States, but only the variety originating in Madagascar uses the trademarked name of Ocean Jasper. You may sometimes see it referred to as Sea Jasper or Marovato Jasper.
Where Does Ocean Jasper Come From?
Ocean Jasper only comes from Madagascar. It was found along the coastline near the villages of Marovato and Kambaby (Marovato means “many stones”). It was originally discovered in the early 1900s, but its exact location went unknown for over 50 years until a man named Paul Obenich found the deposit. The deposit wasn’t accessible by road and could only be seen during low tide, making it difficult to find! The mine closed in 2006, so there will be no new ocean jasper added to the market which adds to its rarity and allure. I honestly can’t believe I have two of these rare crystals!
Where To Put Ocean Jasper In Your House
Ocean Jasper can be placed in the home or worn as jewelry, both to enjoy its beauty and harness its metaphysical properties. Here are some rooms you might want to place Ocean Jasper:
- In a bedroom or bedside table to promote calm feelings
- In a family room or dining space to deepen relationships
- In an office or creative space to encourage flow
- In a meditation space to help with grounding
- At the four corners of your home to cleanse negative energy
One of my favorite books about Crystals also notes that jaspers are great grounding stones. So consider taking one with you the next time you go outside to put your feet in the grass or your toes in the sand.

- Ocean Jasper + rose quartz: to increase self-love

Water is the best way to clean your jasper. After all, Ocean Jasper comes from water! It is a hard stone that will not dissolve when wet, unlike other crystals. Use a damp cloth to wash away dust or stains.
