And now for a behind the scenes ceramic animal related story. While we were working on this…
… this happened:
Since I’m still not ready to talk (or write) about it in depth, here’s John’s depiction of how the tragedy occurred:
Alas, my favorite giant ceramic dog (snagged from HomeGoods three years ago for just 29 bucks) sadly lost his face. In the words of the world’s most famous blogger, it sucked and then I cried.
Yes, there’s a candle lit vigil in progress. Goodbye Mr. Ceramic Dog. You were a wonderful pet. Never had to clean up after you once. Until this happened.
I might try to glue him back together (although some of the pieces are pretty tiny). Until then I’ll be found shaking, crying, and whispering “why?”
Just kidding, I’ll live.
Psst- To anyone having Feedburner/Google Reader issues with our posts coming through, we think we’ve fixed the issue. But just in case it’s safest to unsibscribe and resubscribe, just to be sure you get pinged whenever we post something new.

I was so sad reading this…until I saw the drawing and fell out of my chair laughing!
I hope you find something equally as fabulous to replace him!
Britt says
RIP, mr. ceramic dog. *sniff*
bex says
You guys can TOTALLY fix that! Glue, glue, glue.
Jen says
OMG! I totally gasped when I saw that. I know how you must feel. I had a beautiful ceramic cat toilet brush holder (yeah go on laugh haha) and I smashed it while cleaning. I was so upset my mother went and searched for another. I think she snagged the last one in clearance.

Wooops … linkage!

sorry for your loss.
Hoppy says
Poor doggie! Are you going to frame John’s drawing on the wall of white frames?
YoungHouseLove says
We actually did! If you look closely at the reveal post you might see it up in the top row of frames. It makes me giggle every time.

Rachel says

Cherie says
Oh no! I am so sad for you! I loved him and was very envious! I’m sure he will be missed by all!

Kelley says
Knock his head off and make him in to a planter of some kind.
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, we could plant a chia pet and groom it to look like a dog head…

Nora says
Oh, and holy cow, Sherry, I can’t believe you picked him up for only $29…if you’re lucky, you might be able to find a ceramic urn to put him in for that price :-(
Hoppy says
lol!
Becca C. says
Nooooo! My deepest condolences :(
Lemon says
That’s what happens when one doesn’t wear protective safety gear while doing home improvement. RIP Greyhound :(
Margaret says
I have a lamp that has been broken to bits a couple of times. I’ve managed to glue it back together each time, but there are definitely chips. I think I’m going to try to smooth it out with spackle and then spray paint it. Maybe you could try that?
Amanda says
I’ve been eyeing this one myself. $73 is still a whole lot, but it’s the cheapest I’ve seen so far.
I know there is no replacement for such a wonderful pet, but it could be just the thing you need.

I think this one could totally soothe our dear friends mourning soul. I say we take up a collection for Sherry so that this beaut may one day be hers. And resin…he may hold up a tad bit better than “Jacques”.
Michelle says
I actually said “Oh, no” out loud. Poor Sherry. He was a good dog.
Allison K says
If it was me, I would try and glue it together as best as I could. I have done this before with not terrible results. The cracks might not even show from a distance. It also helps the mourning process. Getting to see it back together and less perfect, is less tragic that it just being gone.
Heather says
oh bummer! I loved that dog too.
Emily says
I’m nauseated. And I’m sorry for your loss.
Christa M says
RIP doggie.
aluck says
I had noticed in the posts about hanging the frames that the dog was there and then gone. I just assumed you had moved him. RIP ceramic pup.
Begoña says
So sorry for you, i think i might cry just thinking about what you had felt at the moment. Did you tell off John? He deserves some punishment! Bad DYer!
YoungHouseLove says
He looked so sorry that I couldn’t be mad for too long. Especially once he drew that hilarious depiction of “the event.”

I literally gasped out loud when I saw the poor doggie. Not sure what that says about me or how attached I am to your crazy ceramic animal collection…:)
Sad, sad day…
Pat E. says
I’m very sorry for your loss.
allie says
So sorry! He was such a cutie! I would totally try to glu him back together. Maybe plaster or clay (or spackling?) and a fresh coat of spray paint could bring him back???
I do love John’s pic, though. Too funny!
ka says
So, John’s in the doghouse?
Alicia says
oh no :( you have to try to super glue it back!
Julie says
Oh no! I know it’s not $29, but you can get a similar one here for $73 (free shipping). Could save your marriage! ;)

Julie says
In fact, should we start a collection?
(I mean a collection to raise money from your loyal readers to buy you a new one. Not a collection of white ceramic animals. You’re good on that one.)
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, no worries! We’re sure we’ll figure something out.

Do you know who manufactured the piece? I may be able to track it down for you. :)
YoungHouseLove says
No clue! But some other commenters have said they’ve still seen them at HomeGoods and TJ Maxx so we’re going to keep an eye out.

Casey says
So sorry to hear about your loss. Just think, though, now you can get a new ceramic pet! And you can start a ceramic pet cemetery in the backyard for the beloved pooch.
YoungHouseLove says
Exactly! I just need a ceramic pet cemetery and I’m all set. Haha.

Christa M says
I can only imagine the look of bewilderment on the faces of the anthropologists millions of years from now when they come across the ceramic pet cemetery.

Haha, I love it.

I don’t think I would be as forgiving as you and must admit that I would probably yell at my husband… but then regret it later. No wonder you got the Reeboks for your b-day :)
Kelsey says
Okay this post is sad but I’d be lying if I weren’t really excited that your blog post did, indeed, display properly in google reader. I love not having to click through! :)
YoungHouseLove says
So glad! We’ve been having issues for a while. Happy to hear that it’s (finally) fixed!

RIP Ceramic dog. :(
heather says
Indeed. The pooch has now crossed the rainbow bridge.
Meredith says
Oh my goodness, SO SAD. I had a beautiful light catcher in my window that took a kamikaze dive one night and I came into my office and was super sad, so I empathize. :( Breaking things sucks.
Nicole Y. says
I’m so sorry :( This actually addresses a question that I thought I had asked in the previous frame post, but I couldn’t find it. I was asking how you guys usually secure the frames onto the wall besides just hanging it? When I tried my hand at a frame collage everything was so fragile and you didn’t want to sneeze as we put nails into the wall. Things would come crashing down as we hammered. I thought it was just us… but after this post…
YoungHouseLove says
John actually dropped a frame that he was trying to hook onto the nail which bounced off another frame which fell and killed my beloved dog. We didn’t have any issues with frames jumping off the wall when we hammered though- maybe because we have plaster walls with nails in them (which usually hold really well). One way to solve your issue would be to use Command velcro or hooks to hold things more securely. Hope it helps!

OMG! I literally gasped out loud when I saw that picture.
So sorry, Sherry! May the poor guy rest in pieces. :(

Ohhhh NOOOOO!
Nancy says
The only words uttered in my house the last few minutes. (My dogs gave me a look of “what?!”)
Hannah says
Oh no! At least now you have an excuse to buy more! LOL
I think you could still put him back together again with glue and fill in the smaller holes with putty or something. Then paint him a funky bright color. It could work?
YoungHouseLove says
Yup, that could totally work I think!

Johnna says
I KNEW I NOTICED HE WAS GONE!!!!!!
Sooooooooooooooooo Sooooooooooooooooooooo Sooooooooooooooooo sad!!!!!
And JUST before your birthday! How did you hold it together for the WSJ interview???
YoungHouseLove says
I know right? It’s a miracle I didn’t bust out crying. Actually, once John made that drawing I couldn’t stop laughing about it. So strange. Still giggling.

liz @ btb says
Ooooh, noooooo. I’m so sorry. Maybe you could have him cremated. : /
But i had to laugh at the drawing and “shaking, crying, and whispering “why?””
Tiffany P says
Aww. That stinks big time.
Looks like John owes you a few new ones! ;-)
Kasandra says
Yep, that’s a tough one. The hazards of picture hanging are endless and we had a similar issue when we moved. My mom threw out a “well, why didn’t you move him?”……… Thanks mom. Good thing you pointed that out ;)
Heather says
John is *so* in the doghouse.
Sara says
I’m so sorry for your loss.
Patty says
This is my first time commenting…I have been visiting your page for a little while now and have to tell you how much I enjoy it, so thank you. I’m very sorry about what happened to the ceramic dog but have to tell you I laughed out loud (from my office at work) at John’s drawing! Now everyone keeps asking me what’s so funny…gonna have to think of an excuse :)
Holly says
Ohh noo!! I thought I just saw some white ones at homegoods the last week or so?
