And now for some “never thought we’d type that in our entire lives” news before we dive into today’s post. Remember when we Instagrammed this (well, I guess technically we Regrammed it) back in May? It was from our day of shooting a little segment with the OWN crew (as in Oprah’s crew). #ahhhhhh #more screaming
Well, that “short film” is airing this Sunday! It’ll be on towards the end of their Super Soul Sunday season premiere (info here) and we’re practically ready to faint at the possibility of Oprah saying our names out loud. Seriously, somebody get me a fan, a ruffled dress, and a chaise lounge so I can dramatically swoon.
But now back to the opportunities that we seized and missed. First the one that we missed (I’m a “tell me the bad news first” kinda girl). A few blocks away from us we noticed that a neighbor was mid-renovation (the sizable dumpster in their driveway was our first clue). One day we spotted a bunch of outdoor furniture peeking out over its top edge. Was that some chunky wicker Restoration-Hardware-ish stuff? And some iron chairs and a table? Why was it in the dumpster? It looked to be in good condition. Could this be our new sunroom furniture?
Our brains started fantasizing a trash-to-treasure rescue story. Maybe a little cleaning or rust-removing spray paint was all they needed? But then again, maybe they were in the trash pile for good reason. And would it be super awkward to knock on a stranger’s door and ask to raid their dumpster? Oh, but it would suck for salvageable stuff to go to waste…
We spent a couple of days trying to decide if our idea was genius or crazy. Would the neighbors think we were thoughtful or out of our minds? Finally I decided we should just satisfy our curiosity and ask. No sooner had I mustered the courage did John burst my bubble: “I meant to tell you, I noticed on the way back from preschool that the dumpster had been emptied.” $herdog = sad clown. I know it could have just been old broken furniture anyway, but now I’ll never know. I guess I’ll have to find another dumpster to dive into…
But in other “hey-what-are-the-neighbors-up-to?” news (here comes the good part) the family two doors down is in the midst of some major landscaping work involving all sorts of awesome things like an outdoor fireplace and a stone patio. We love them and Burger is even on decent terms with their dog which is a small animal miracle because Burger only likes cats. Anyway, we don’t have anything major that needs to be done (yet) but it did give us one of those “since you’re in the neighborhood” ideas. The tree work that we had done a few months back left us with some high spots, some low spots, and some grass-won’t-grow-on-that-pile-of-ground-tree-stump spots. Photos don’t do the ankle-breaking-potential justice. At their worst there were some areas that were about 15″ off (either too high or too low) so don’t let what look like small piles fool you. We’re talking about 30 wheelbarrows full o’ mulch in that mound on the right.
We had been meaning to slowly-but-surely wheelbarrow out the piles ourselves, but we eventually came to the conclusion that this was a job for some heavier duty equipment. We considered renting some sort of mini earthmoving dozer (um, John would be in heaven) but even the smallest dozer rental was $425 a day from local rental places like this. So we thought it couldn’t hurt to ask the guys pushing dirt around just two doors down, right?
I strolled down there one afternoon, found someone who appeared to be in charge, and asked if they had an opening in their schedule to roll up the street and roll around on our yard a little. We figured it’d be easier (i.e. cheaper) than calling another company who would have to lug their equipment all the way over just for us, and hopefully they’d like the idea of earning some extra cash whenever they had a spare moment to stop by. They were very friendly and, more importantly, totally game. They said we’d have to get Miss Utility to mark our yard first (so they didn’t hit any pipes or wires in the process) so I dialed 8-1-1 and just a couple of days later the yard was marked and, fortunately, nothing was in the path of our piles.
With our yard all flagged up, we checked back in with the landscaping crew and before we knew it we had front row seats. Clara was in awe of her own personal “digger show.”
The crazy thing is that what we guessed would take a few hours, literally only took the guy about thirty minutes. He was a total PRO. And John was only a little jealous.
He even scooped all of the too-acidic-to-allow-grass-to-grow-on-it mulch and rolled it into our wooded side yard before meticulously spreading it out for us in there. Can’t even tell it’s there, right?
After his 30 minute flattening spree he said “how about $60 for that?” and we were elated! Sure beats the time and money we would’ve spent renting something. Dude, our front yard is sooo much better. Okay, maybe it’s still kinda brown and weedy, but at least it’s flat. And flat means it’s ready for grass seed!
Speaking of grass seed, we may actually get a quote from the landscaping guys (the neighbor’s project still has a few weeks to go) to see how much they’d charge to drop off some top soil for us before we seed. It’s not a must-have, but a fresh layer of topsoil certainly wouldn’t hurt our first season of grass-growing. Plus, they mentioned we might be able to piggyback on a delivery they’re bringing to the other house. Is that efficiency I smell?
So there’s one moment missed and one moment grabbed and squeezed like a lemon in my sweet tea. Sidenote: How much do the end of our railings look like hamburgers? I’m tempted to paint them like this. You know, in honor of Burger.
What have you guys been noticing around the neighborhood? Now that it’s getting cooler and kids are back in school it seems like a lot of people are getting house stuff done – which of course we LOVE to watch. There have been some pretty amazing new fences going up and a whole lot of house-painting. Tis the season!

I have been on the other end of neighbors poaching my construction crew. We did discuss it in advance, like you say you did in the comments, but nonetheless, the crew short changed my job for the other. My neighbors and I now discuss landscape projects in advance and use the same crew to bid and do our projects. We each get a fare rate (not one paying full the other paying under the table) and no one gets a spiff and the other short changed. I learned from being on the other end and by owning homes for decades. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but your post rubbed me wrong and as a reader, I hope I can offer this other point of view to you and others.

Thanks Linda! It definitely helps to hear how these things can go and what we can do differently to ensure that we’re being as thoughtful as possible to our neighbors!

Our neighbors lost their home in the hurricane last year (Jersey). After months of fighting with the insurance company and months of slowly gutting the inside of their house, they are now just a few months away from an almost brand new house. It’s gonna be beautiful. We hope to have them home by Christmas.

Oh Helene, that’s so sweet! I hope they’re in by Christmas!

If Clara enjoyed the digger show, she needs to get behind the wheel of one! Bring her out to Touch a Truck on October 5th at RIR where she can explore every cool truck seen around town — bulldozers, tractors, dump trucks, big rigs, fire trucks, ambulances, bucket trucks and a bunch more. If John is like most dads that come, I suspect he’ll have just as much fun as Clara!

We are having our front porch re-painted. The house is white vinyl siding, so the porch is white, too. But, I am really excited to be doing the ceiling in a light blue! Also, the doors are going green, SW Larchmere. I can’t wait to see it finished!

You shouldn’t be scared to ask re:dumpsters like that. We have one in our yard now and we’ve had three neighbors ask if they can toss in their trash (leftover wood, old door, carpet remnants) and two guys ask if they can take stuff out (bathtub, old pipes, sliding glass door, shower door). Assuming the takers were salvaging the scrap metal. Anyway…it never hurts to ask. We have a regular dumpster economy going on in our front yard!

Haha, I love that Hillary! You sound like an awesome neighbor.

Piggy-Backing is a GREAT way to save money! just need to keep an eye out for whats going on around the neighborhood. My husband spotted a neighbor getting their driveway sealed and asked the company if we could join in the fun. Because they were in the neighborhood, and not wanting to go back with extra materials, they said yes. Our loooong driveway was seal for $500 instead of $1000 – 50% off!! just for being a nosey neighbor!

I have been a trash furniture picker before it became blogger chic :) When my girls were younger they would ask if I was stealing and I would say no I am recycling. I have picked some great finds over the years and really cute chairs for outdoor planters and a couple that were in such great condition they have a place in my home. One time a very large piece of property down the road was being developed from a single family home to a large housing development. I picked the greatest landscaping rocks out of their very large graded dirt pile. I couldn’t get to one that was so pretty so I thought I would have my husband come back the next morning and help me get it. Too late the dump truck came and took it all away for fill. So these great rocks still have a place in my garden and I think the elderly couple that lived there before they sold the house would be happy to know that those stones that they probably picked out years ago when they built there have a home in my gardens where I have lived for 23 years and plan on living at least 15 more. Who knows maybe someday someone else will take them elsewhere.

We’re seeing lots of pre-winter tree work and roofing here in the Boston suburbs. And one new chicken coop! The neighborhood kids all watched it go up over the summer, and now there are half a dozen chickens to visit on the way to school in the morning. =) I want to get to some outside projects (raking, cleaning up, and marking out a real path where we generally just trample the grass) but I need to finish my hall first. (Paint is done! Woo! http://kaesey.wordpress.com/2013/09/10/mini-tour/) New lights and dimmers, and then I can decorate!

My neighbor down the street just put her house up for sell and moved back to Ohio (they’ve lived there a whole 7 months) and I want to see if I can get a conga line going to move all of our stuff into her house. She has my kitchen, as in My Kitchen with the huge grey marble island with seating, and the Seattle-size large flat yard with actual grass and room to throw a ball (we have a patio that fits a bbq, 2 chairs, and two pee patches of grass for the dog…and that’s it).
I’d love to get rid of the mulch hill that passes for our backyard but unfortunately it requires city permits (which a landscape person said I’d be very unlikely to get since it backs up to the hillside behind our house and the city’s retaining wall) and would cost over $10,000. It’s easier to just move…
I love Super Soul Sunday!

You might check your local Craigslist for compost to add to the topsoil before seeding. I have a girlfriend who has horses, and she and her husband are SERIOUS composters, with air tubes, other vegetative matter, etc. My brother lives in Chicago proper, with a postage stamp sized front yard, and they are planning to scrape it clear, add some of my girlfriend’s awesome, all natural compost and reseed this fall. You just need to be sure it’s been weathered (not fresh). Good luck!

Hi guys! I don’t know what type of grass is common in RVA…(I’m out in the Chicago suburbs)…but I cannot recommend having hydroseed (that mint green stuff you often see in commercial area or alongside highways) put down if it works with your indigenous grass. We did a lot of work at our first house, and as a result needed to reseed or sod the whole yard. We ended up having someone spray hydroseed and we have never, ever had such a lush beautiful lawn in any house since. Just a suggestion…I can’t recall exact prices, but it was extremely reasonable.

I love that it crosses your mind to dumpster dive too! Our local Pharmacy just closed their doors. (Major Bummer) But right after the announcement I noticed a dumpster outside.
So every morning we’ve taken a walk by the pharmacy, and peeked over the edge. It was worth it! I’ve been able to score a neat display shelf that I think will make a great “grocery store” in my kids new basement play area.
I’ve also been busy recycling my own trash into usable items, and finally made a magnet wall for my kids. (I’ve only been thinking about it for 3 years, but I finally found all supplies)
Excited for the great deal you got on the landscaping. That is such a big job, awesome that it only cost $60! Think of all the $$ you saved in pain killers by not using a wheel barrow.

Speaking of outdoor goodies being tossed with the trash (but this one has a happy ending)…I noticed a couple of really nice, but rusty 3-tiered garden planters next to my neighbors trash bins, kind of like this: http://www.kinsmangarden.com/product/Three-Tiered-Planter
I couldn’t muster up the courage to knock on a stranger’s door and inquire so I just passed by them everyday for over a YEAR on my way to get the mail. A few weeks ago I noticed moving trucks at their home. I put my husband on curb watch. For a couple weeks we watched the curb to see if they would be put out with the trash. Finally, one day I saw them on the curb. I didn’t want to just take them so I left a happy note on the front door that said I’d be happy to take them off their hands. The planters were gone that night and I was so bummed. I figured they must’ve been on hold for someone else. Three days passed and as my husband and I opened the door to go for a walk…they were sitting on the front porch! Shut the front door!!! So excited, I went and bought paint and commenced their makeover immediately (after all I had a year to plan my vision). Now they are glossy black, lined with hot pink fabric and holding my yarn stash in my studio. Happy, happy, happy!

We’ve definitely done this same kind of thing! A neighbor down the street was having a stump ground out and we had one that needed it, so I just went down and asked. We decided this year we were going to focus on the inside of the house and next year we are going to redo the entire yard, front and back. The house we bought had full sod in the front and partial in the back, but they planted a grass that does horribly in the shade…and its mostly shade. Now we have to decide how to even start this project. Bring someone in or diy? Maybe laying sod isnt SO hard?? lol
YoungHouseLove says
We redid our first house’s yard from nothing (it was basically just mulch and dirt and weeds and we got a ton of grass to grow!). I bet you can do it! We seeded it but I hear sod can be awesome too!

Yay to the Oprah thing!!!! So cool!!! Don’t you love when you can get something done for alot cheaper and quicker than if you did it yourself?! :) As for piggy backing on someone else’s projects, we did that this spring/early summer. Had the guy digging out one person’s garden area, till up ours for a whole whopping $35 (for an 80’x12′ area). So nice that we didn’t have to rent something this year!! Plus, it takes us longer to do it than it did him and costs more than double.
Happenings in our neighborhood.. it is good and bad. They are building three new ramblers… which is good, but bad all at the same time. These are small cookie cutter ramblers. When we built, we were given so much grief by the developer (we have a 2 story). We were told initially when looking, he didn’t want a cookie cutter neighborhood. Well, he’s got it. It is good for the builder, as he is making some money. I just wish he would build something a little different than the same exact house over and over. There are over a dozen of that same house.
Goings on at our house… I have a new arched 2-panel solid core door on my laundry room. Bye-bye, flush hollow core door! :)

If you are unable to get topsoil, or want to try a free method, you can pile all your leaves and your neighbors leaves and cover them with a piece of tarp for the winter. Works great. You don’t even have to turn it. Shredding helps but isn’t necessary. Leaf mulch is excellent compost. I know people who have done this in place to creat planting beds for the next spring.

Nice luck with the landscaping help! I wish I could find someone with a big machine to come help me with my horrifying mess of a yard!
$60 is a drop in the bucket. I get sweaty palms when I think about how much it is going to cost us to level our yard. Did you discuss price before the job? It sounds like he decided on a price after he was done. What if he had said, “how about $5,000 for that!” ?!
YoungHouseLove says
This was probably the very first project we didn’t agree on a price until after it was done (other than hourly work by electricians, etc, which always varies by how long it takes). Admittedly it could have gone terribly but we had discussed just having them quickly flatten the yard for a nominal fee before they came over, and when he did come by he was so nice and we didn’t think a quick flattening could be more than $100 or so. I think when someone pops over to do a small job for you they try to price it well so you might give them more business in the future, which seemed to be the case here!

Grass seeding question: can you walk on the grass while it’s germinating? We need to do our whole yard, and while we’d avoid walking on it, I’m afraid light foot traffic will ruin the whole thing. What do you guys usually do?

We try to stay off of it as much as we can but it definitely gets some light foot traffic in some areas. You eventually have to mow it so that’s a whole lot of “disturbance” but hopefully by then it’s nice and rooted.

We lost 11 trees to the emerald ash borer last year. :-( We went from lots of mulched areas and shade to wide open spaces and grass. I would make sure to put down a good layer of topsoil. When we seeded we removed all of the mulch, tilled up the soil, and added some new topsoil, but the grass came in thin, short and light green due to the acidity in the soil from years of mulch on top. So we’ve added lots more topsoil and reseeded twice and the grass is finally coming in nicely.

Hemmed year old draperies, removed old shutters, painted front door (inspired by YHL), painted the wall behind our fireplace, painted the mantel, made some artwork for our bedroom, hung photo frames in our bedroom, rearranged our bedroom, made a new house number display for the front of our house, started refinishing an old changing table to turn into a mobile bar cart… phew!
