This week marked our 1 year anniversary of moving into this house. So to celebrate that milestone (while we work on an office update to share on Monday) we thought we’d drop some infographics up in hizzere. YE-AH, BOY! As an homage to this stat-tastic “before” post, we picked out some fun facts and figures from the last 12 months-ish (and we dropped a preview of our in-progress office project in there for good measure).
For a more all-inclusive rundown of the progress we’ve made over the last year, complete with before & after photos and links to each project, you can check out our (freshly updated!) House Tour page.
Or if you’re in the mood for more Teddy, we just added his 7 week photo. The boy won’t stop growing.

WOW what an awesome “at a glance” update!! You guys have done such an amazing job :-) I always dream of one day getting to update a house the way you guys do, all the way through! (my current house…let’s just say I started stripping wallpaper in the bathroom 2 years ago and it’s still half done! X-| I’m so ashamed!) but you guys give such great motivation, I can’t wait for every new post! And your rocking digital graphic style is AWESOME!! (digital dezine is my thang lol) ;-D
Erin says
Crazy creative (and looks like so much work!)… you guys are just so good at what you do. Respect!
Nikki says
I just want to say thank you! We moved into our house a year ago this week too and it is so refreshing to check in with you guys and not feel the pressure to have EVERYTHING done yet. We still have paint samples all over our dining room with about half the window frames primed and have only hung about 4 things on our walls. Getting a house to feel like a home takes time and it is nice to see other people taking “real” time to get things done.

Perhaps someone has already suggested this but too many comments to read! Have you considered bathroom fan switches that are timed? We installed two in three of our bathrooms and they are amazing! When someone showers, you can set the timer to turn off the fan after 5-60 minutes (you can choose how much time). It’s great when you don’t want to turn it off yet but dread having to run upstairs later, great energy saver too! We purchased ours at Lowes, sharing the links below. Just an idea :)

I remember posts from the first house about the importance of a unified, few-color paint scheme to keep things from getting crazy. You seem to have gone a way different direction now with 21 colors. I like them – but did your color thinking just evolve or is there something about this house that lends itself to a more diverse palette?
YoungHouseLove says
I think since our first house was smaller (with tighter hallways and more modestly sized rooms) we liked the easy-flow feeling of fewer colors. We really wanted that place to feel as seamless/open as possible without breaking it up very much at all. Meanwhile this house is larger, gets more light, and has bigger rooms / wider halls, so we don’t mind breaking things up a little with a wider palette (accenting a few rooms with dark/dramatic walls, adding fun pops of color to the kids rooms, etc). I definitely think some of it is just us evolving and being less nervous to branch out too!

What a happy post! Congrats on all the accomplishments. I love your graphics! Do you guys design the graphics as well? If so, what program you use?
Thanks so much!

oh I love this!! This is such a great idea to track your milestones. We bought our first home two years ago and it’s always a new project every week. It would’ve been cool to have tracked everything this way. You guys are awesome and a great inspiration for other DIYers. :)

“Creating a life that reflects your values and satisfies your soul is a rare achievement. In a culture that relentlessly promotes avarice and excess as the good life, a person happy doing his own work is usually considered an eccentric, if not a subversive. Ambition is only understood if it’s to rise to the top of some imaginary ladder of success. Someone who takes an undemanding job because it affords him the time to pursue other interests and activities is considered a flake. A person who abandons a career in order to stay home and raise children is considered not to be living up to his potential-as if a job title and salary are the sole measure of human worth.
You’ll be told in a hundred ways, some subtle and some not, to keep climbing, and never be satisfied with where you are, who you are, and what you’re doing. There are a million ways to sell yourself out, and I guarantee you’ll hear about them. To invent your own life’s meaning is not easy, but it’s still allowed, and I think you’ll be happier for the trouble.” – Bill Waterson
I read this quote today (from his 1990 Kenyon commencement address) and I thought of you guys.

can’t wait to see what you do with the dining room. But will settle for the office makeover meantime. Did I miss the skink story? I know about blue-tongued skinks but not blue-tailed!
Link to the skink if there is one, please!
YoungHouseLove says
We didn’t write anything up but we had the back door cracked for burger and he must have spooked a skink into running into our house. He made it all the way into the half bathroom before we could get him back outside again. Clara thought it was hilarious!

I really liked your comments about choosing a palette for the entire house; right now I’m hating my home office (pale yellow), next to a green living room, next to a red kitchen, next to a wallpapered dining room, next to a pink flowered wallpaper up the stairs. What were we thinking? We liked each one at the time, but they don’t seem to flow together well. Its a talent, choosing paint! The flaw in picking paint must be hereditary – my brother once every single room in his house a bright color – the rest of the family secretly called it the “crayola” house.
sally says
And on another note – MORE TEDDY!
Lindsay says
I love all the paint colors you’ve chosen! It makes me want to reprint now! I seem to remember you all doing a post a long time ago about your strategy for buying clothes for Clara. I’d love to know if you all have changed your strategy or go to places with Teddy. I’m having my first this fall and am just clueless on what is and isn’t a good deal, etc!
YoungHouseLove says
Right now it’s mostly just onesies from Old Navy, Target, and Baby Gap, so I think things like short and pants are still mostly waiting in the wings (sometimes a few come out for photos but that’s pretty much it). We’ll have to see if we settle into some sort of method when he’s past the onesie stage and report back!

LOVE this post! Can you please tell me where you got Teddy’s fox pants in his week 4 photo??? My 11 week old cannot live without them (he told me so!) :)

They were a gift from a friend from Etsy but don’t have a tag. Maybe search fox pants on etsy?

You guys do such a great job documenting everything. It’s amazing to see the progress in just a year to not only your new home, but your growing family. Congratulations! You guys inspire me to get on it already with everything I have yet to do. Which is a lot. :/ Thanks for the motivation!
Beth says
I can’t believe its been a year already! I wonder whether the new onwners of your old house would be willing to let you visit to learn how they’ve made it their own? I’d be curious to see what they’ve changed and what they decided to keep!
YoungHouseLove says
I would love that too! We have actually chatted with the owner of our first home and she said it would be fun to have us over. I’d love to see that place too!

Reading through this post, I had the 12 Days of Christmas tune in my head…”…Five flooring updates, four spiced up ceilings, three cheerful doors, two little kiddos, and a burger in a new house!” You should consider doing an update around Christmas time with a YHL holiday song!
