This week my little Dude Get On That Already project involves three floating vases (from CB2 four years ago, but they still sell them) that used to hang right outside our first house’s kitchen.
Then, you guessed it, they got stashed in our playroom after we moved, never to be heard from again. Until now! Behold:
Yup, I tapped three nails into the wall in the guest bathroom and they’re now officially three more things that are off the floor in the cluttered playroom. Three grocery store blooms work for now, but when they bite the big one, I’m sure they’ll get replaced with leafy branches and other stuff pillaged from the backyard.
This is one of the three bathrooms that we have yet to do much with, but we are nearing the end of our big kitchen project so odds are we’ll get there someday.
I think it’s official: tulips are my favorite flowers. Yes, I held out until I was almost 30 to declare that, but I said it so there’s no going back. Until I change my mind. Haha.
See that brown rectangle in the bottom right of this picture?
That’s the giant mirror from the guest room that’s supposed to be above the dresser. Yeah, our house is still completely jostled – for lack of a better word – from book photoshoots. So random things are just sitting wherever. Someday they’ll find their way “home” I’m sure. And in the meantime, at least I’m chipping away at little items cluttering up the playroom… and taking an inordinate amount of photos of these vases in this miniscule room from every angle.
Look, here’s my impression of a mannequin.
I even got artsy and laid on the floor. Perhaps in celebration that this week’s project wasn’t animal related? Or because so much of this room is rough on the eyes (so staring up at the ceiling is one of the easiest views).
What small projects are you guys checking off the ol’ to do list? Do you have stacks of things you’re still waiting to hang? A bunch of untouched bathrooms that need some love? Or any favorite flower declarations that you’d like to get out there in the universe?
Psst- We announced this week’s big tile giveaway winner. Click here to see if it’s you.

I love this little series! I think we could all benefit from something similar, huh?
Amy @ this DIY life says
Tulips are my faves too! Closely followed by daisies :) I did two simplify/dude get on that already projects this week! Two! One for the Pinterest challenge (thanks for the kick in the pants to get it done) and the other was something the hubs got me for our anniversary last October. We have a bit of an odd anniversary tradition, but we *love* it: http://thisdiylife.wordpress.com/2012/03/15/be-our-guest/.

This is awesome. As you may remember from a comment I posted not too terribly long ago, I’ve been curious about what you did with stuff from the old house that had a perfect spot there but we haven’t seen in the new house yet (plus the more recent finds you’ve talked about), so I’m thrilled to see what you end up doing with some of this stuff.
Have a great weekend!

Yes, it’s all hoarded in the playroom, but slowly I’m chipping away at it!

these vases are sitting in my guestroom waiting to be hung somewhere. i love them but i’m having trouble deciding what to put in them once they are hung. therefore, they are just sitting on my desk waiting to find a home!
maybe this weekend i’ll find the perfect spot!

Sherry – Don’t be ashamed to admit you love Tulips! They are may favorite also. My husband says that he loves tulips are my favorite! He only needs to buy them certain times of the year and they are cheap! I got married in the spring just so that it made sense to include them in my decorations. There is something about them that are so subtle and happy that I just love! Love decor with them too!!
Tasha says
Hello again :) I just posted a comment on another post wasn’t sure if y’all looked at other comments lol so I want to post here too. I went to the tile shop today they had no idea what YHL10 was and would process it for me. I showed them your website, no dice. They even said someone else went in and tried to get the same tile you guys did earlier this week and didn’t honor for them either. I had them note my account that if anything gets updated they will go back and honor it. Is there any way you could go to your sponsor contact or the tile shop directly and get this updated for us with a new post or note? I have lots to buy and this would really help! Thanks, Tasha
YoungHouseLove says
That is crazy! We’ll email them. They send us a new code that should always be “active” (they set the code and the terms, but they have been a longtime sponsor and we have been offering that code, and hearing from folks who have used it, for years).
xo,
s
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Tasha, here’s an update for ya from The Tile Shop: the code YHL10 should always work when you order online or purchase from their stores (they even sent an email around to all of their stores to remind people of this) so hopefully that helps!

No way!!! Oh my goodness those are awesome. I need to go back and read how you got them on the wall with nails? Are they glass? I was to busy looking at all the pictures :)

Ahhh I see, they have a hole :) I’m am so buying these!

I like the idea of also having greenery from the yard. Before I had kids, I would put arrangements in out powder room since it has no windows. Hosta leaves look great.
BTW – Did you see the latest kitchen of the month in House Beautiful? It has marble open shelves with iron brackets (3 brackets per shelf also.) I must say your shelves have better style, but both kitchens are great.
YoungHouseLove says
Ooh now I can’t wait to check it out. I love their kitchens of the month!

I LOVE these but am fearful that they would result in shards of glass due to my clumsiness. Very pretty though! I have an ‘invisible’ book shelf thinger – I must be drawn to things that look like they shouldn’t be hanging on.

Love these floating vases!
That last picture is a perfect view of what it would look like through the eyes of your little one in there. :)
Have a lovely weekend!

I also have a set of three of these hanging vases that have been lingering for about 4 years. This post made me smile. Love your blog. Already ordered the book!
indigorchid says
I don’t know if anyone else has already suggested this, but… it would be fun to see an “in-progress” pictures of your playroom compared to the “before” (slash cluttered state) that we’ve seen – can you tell that your dude-challenges are making a dent? Is is a motivation to clear things off further?
YoungHouseLove says
I wish we could do that! It’s full of secret book projects so we can’t share pics until the book is out and that stuff isn’t top secret anymore!

What a neat idea! I am curious though, how do you refill it with water? Or clean out the water already there? :) I love the tulips! I have to agree, while roses are beautiful, there is just something about a tulip that is just so calm and amazingly beautiful. Makes me want to go out and buy some today.. Hmmm ;)
YoungHouseLove says
You just pull it off the wall whenever you’d like (it hangs over a nail, so it can come down and go back up). As for how I clean them, I just soak them in soapy water or even run them through the dishwasher.

Thanks for your inspiration. Your Dude Get On With It projects are catching. We moved 2 days after Christmas and I have a guest room full of pictures, projects, even vases. Everything but a bed. Company will arrive before I know it. Thanks for the weekly reminders to get things done.

So very delicate and PRETTY! I love the floor shot Sherry!
Jen says
Love it Sherry! I love the tulips & how they can brighten up my day! I’m sure you know this secret since you and your husband are the diy awesomenessers (yeah not really a word in the dictionary i know), but i heard you can drop a penny in the water and apparently the tulips stand tall again? I have yet to try it but I think I might have to buy some tulips now. They’re my favorite too!!
Jen
PS. I was thinking of you and your husband bc I was watching Mad Men and saw this bookshelf that TOTALLY reminded me of yours!!!! I’ll have to tweet it to you!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, it works! But it has to be an old penny (apparently the new ones don’t have any/as much copper?!). Would love to see the Mad Men bookshelf!

I try REALLY hard not to steal ALL of your ideas and be a YHL copycat, but dude… I just bought 4 of those vases for our tiny apartment bathroom (which is in desperate need of some art/color therapy!). I also spray-painted a hand-me-down lamp today in ORB…. So maybe I am a copycat after all! ;)
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, I’m definitely not the first to do either of those thing! Design is a what-goes-around-comes-around kind of thing, so I think ideas like that are meant to be shared and everyone can do their own take! Spray paint and vase hang away!

Those are so cute! For some reason, in the shot from your first house with the leaves in the vases, those little things remind me of pears. I imagined those buddies hanging in my kitchen. Precious!

Braelin says
I just ordered a set of these (b/c of your post)– I’ve been wanting something like this for a long time, so your pictures and reviews that the cleaning isn’t too difficult put me over the edge!
Related to this, my accomplishment today was (a) buying a frame (Target), and then (b) actually hanging a print in said frame (in the bathroom that the vases will go in too). I’ve had the print for close to SIX years… (just sitting in an envelope). Ugh. Talk about procrastination. Then again, in my defense, I used to work at an art college and was buying art left and right for a number of years. This one is a print of a painting of a storm coming in over the Colorado plains from one of our graduates and I LOVE how it looks hanging in my home! Plus, it is cool to know the artists behind the work too.
All in all, a successful day of home decorating. Thanks, YHL!

I know I may be strange but I love that little bathroom just the way it is. I don’t know how it functions but I like the tiled shower and the color. The vases look pretty in there. Did you walk around the house looking for a place for them or did you have that spot in mind? I’ve been trying to find places for things I’ve had for eons and love, but stashed away.
So tulips are the fave flower. Does this mean John will be planting scads of bulbs this fall?
YoungHouseLove says
I just walked around the house with them and held them up to see where I thought they should go! It’s funny because they seem to look best on slivers of wall space (not on too large of an expanse, since they’re small little clear vases, so they pop most in small little areas. I wish John would plant bulbs for me, but I think if I want that done I’m in charge of it! Haha.

So cute! Do you have the original post for when you hung these vases in the first house? (Or did you do a post?) I’m sure I could do a search for it…but since I’m already typing this out…I need some more step by step!
YoungHouseLove says
I actually don’t think I posted about them since I believe I had them before I started the blog. But I just held them up and moved them around to find where I wanted to hang them and tapped a small nail into the wall to hold each one up. Hope it helps!

A little bit of pink always seem to go a long way! These look great and floating cases are something I’ve been meaning to add to my decor.
LisaR says
Hi Sherry. Cute vases! I know you said you love your yellow tile, but just in case you feel like a facelift… we had the exact same tile in bright blue in our bathroom and were ready for a change. We contacted someone who did reglazing. He did our bathtub and the entire bright blue tile surround for $500. They look BRAND NEW. Seriously my jaw dropped. Now it’s all bright white. Looks like we ripped everything out and got brand new everything. Almost looks like subway tile now. Fantastic. Some of the best money we’ve spent.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, we have reglazed old tubs- it’s amazing what they can do!

When I found out I had to move out of my apartment 6 months ago I was in the middle of a MILLION projects that are now stashed all over the place…including the back of my car. (Yes, for 6 months) Now I found out I can actually move back into my old apartment so the projects are picking up again in a big way :)
I love these vases and I LOVE the idea of growing herbs in them, one of my projects now is attaching mason jars to reclaimed wood to hang herbs in the kitchen! Maybe once that’s finished I’ll tackle the clutter in the back of my car…

I saw the idea originally on Pinterest, (one of my very first pins…) via Not Just a Housewife. She used them as planters in a hallway, but as soon as I saw them I wanted to use them in my kitchen for fresh herbs!

I feel like I have to share that I finally became a member of the ‘dude get on that already’ challenge this weekend. I ticked three things off the to-do list including potting five plants that I’ve been propigating in water (which started to look a little like a dirty fish tank). I bought 10 pots at IKEA a few weeks ago a finally got the potting soil Saturday. So glad to have ‘gotten on that already.’

I’m a bit behind on posting this comment, but…. As i was sitting in the hospital in labor 11 days ago i was reading your blog to keep me from going crazy, and i saw these during my web browsing and…i saw these and had to share them with you. I figured your “dude get on that already” post would be the best place to share it as, almost all (except this one) have had to do with animals… These just reminded me of your blog as a whole and the grin helped me through labor… Hope you enjoy them as much as i did!!

I just had to say thank you for posting this! I had been looking for the “perfect” thing to put above our (soon to be born) daughters coat hook in her room. Love these vases, went ahead and bought 6 (good for impromptu gift giving also). Then I saw these:

liquid marbles. I added 1/2tsp of dry gems to the vase, added water, let hydrate overnight, dumped out the excess water (U have to add dry gems to these vases due to the small opening, once hydrated they will not fit. Love the aquagems, U can get big ones, add the dry crystals to a bottle, add water to hydrate, everyone wonders how U got those huge marbles into the bottle!.
I have seen limited colors at Michael’s crafts.
