This morning we rushed home from our big morning show interview on CBS6 and ran to our DVR to watch our little segment. The good news: we didn’t have any spit bubble incidents or crying and running off stage occurrences. In fact we managed to string together a few coherent sentences. Victory is ours!
We were pretty nervous when we learned that we were the very first interview of the show, but in hindsight it probably helped that we weren’t the last because the suspense would have built for another hour while we sat on our hands. It was nice to drop in, get mic’ed up, do the interview and find ourselves back in the car on the way home within an hour’s time! And the crew and hosts were fantastically nice, which really helped to put us at ease. Actually the entire atmosphere was suuuper laid back. We honestly thought there would be someone screaming “quiet on the set” and all these intense countdowns to taping but it was more like you blink your eyes and you’re on air and then you blink again and it’s all over. Thank goodness for that! Check it out below on Vimeo or see it here on YouTube.
Sure they said our old web address in the interview (although the subtitle got it right!) and added an extra N to our last name (“Petersnik” made us titter for about half an hour when we got home and noticed it) but we’re overjoyed that we lived to tell the tale of our stint on live TV! There’s just something unexpectedly scary about the pressure to get things right in the first take (we’re especially aware of this now that we’re making weekly videos which often require about five takes for us to make any sense at all). But we did it! And Burger even looked sideways at the TV screen when we played it back for him. Is it possible he’ll listen to us more now that we have TV cred?
And as a bonus, it was totally fun to see the weather girl point to a bunch of random spots on a green screen (and then watch it back at home to see that her seemingly random motions made total sense). How does she know where things are when it’s a giant green backdrop? We’re in awe of the magic that is on-air weather.
Anyway, we hope you guys enjoyed our little clip! Questions? Comments? Experiences on TV? Wardrobe critiques? Share and share alike!

I’m so proud!!! I always feel so uplifted after visiting your blog. In my mind I imagine you both being always super positive 24-7 and never cranky or crabby or unreasonable ;)
You both did great and did not seem nervous
Geeez. I’m sure all morning show people are very nice but seem sooooooo cheesy sometimes.
kasey at thriftylittleblog says
Great job. I can just imagine Burger watching it :).
Rebekah says
Great job! Not very good editing on their part, though, getting the name of your blog and your last name wrong — those are pretty important!
Rebekah says
And Sherry, weren’t you not suppose to wear something dark? ;)
You look super cute though. I like how you both are wearing matching pants!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Rebekah,
It’s true, they say dark colors wash you out on TV so the original plan was to go with something brighter but since 99% of my wardrobe is black I was lucky to find a pink tank top to toss on to get a slice of color near my face. For me that’s super bright and colorful, even though I was wearing dark jeans and a dark jacket on top of it. Eh well, I tried!

Super nice interview. It is so weird. I don’t know you but it made me feel proud to see you on TV.
My only experience on TV was when I was four – on the slopes at Mt. Hood (Oregon) in my knit Big Bird hat. My gramps and I were on the end of the evening news where they roll the credits.
You both looked so relaxed and like you’re more than ready to move from bloggers to home improvement show hosts.
Sandra says
You guys were so poised and professional, well done! And cute jacket, Sherry!
Fatima says
You guys rocked it!! I am so proud of you :)) Excellent job!
Jill Stigs says
OH, yeah……..forgot to mention how cute it was how it was mentioned twice about Sherry is so scary with a hammer.
ROTFL on that one!

Congratulations! Y’all did a great job!
Sarah says
Congrats! You guys did an awesome job. Don’t feel bad about the extra “n” in your name, and the mistake on mention the old site’s name — I work in PR and this happens alllll the time in the industry. Great job!
Emily says
EXCELLENT! I work in TV news so I really enjoyed watching your interview. You were both relaxed and natural and explained things perfectly. Great job! P.S. – the secret to the green screen are the 2 monitors on either side that show what you actually see on TV. The weather person can look at those to see where they are pointing…plus use broad generic strokes on an area vs. pointing right at a certain city.
abby larson says
I’m sorry…but you guys are COMPLETELY adorable. You will definitely have your own show within a year. Mark my words! I can’t wait to watch you become so famous you can hardly stand it! xoxo

You did more than survive, you were fantastic! You need your own show…

ooo my goodness – did you meet my client Hair Cuttery? I set up their segment this morning – too funny that you were both there! Your segment was really great! Congrats :)
YoungHouseLove says
Totally met the Hair Cuttery folks, Kaity! We were actually chatting with Star in the lobby before hand and swapped “so, why are you here?” stories. She did a great job also. Didn’t get to watch her live, but totally let the DVR run long when we got back home.
We were also talking to Zeke’s mom ahead of time about the house she and her husband are building. Small world! And love the Share A Haircut promotion, btw.

Woo Hoo! I am a huge fan of your blog. But I’m so quiet and shy I may not have told you that before. Y’all did a GREAT JOB. You didn’t even look nervous. Yay! Loved it!
Diana says
Wow!! That was PERFECT!!! You guys are soooo cute and so natural. ; ) Congrats!!! Can’t wait to see what the future holds for you guys!!!
Sarah says
Way to go! HGTV would be lucky to have you. Good work.
I would be so nervous. How did you decide what to wear? I have an interveiw tomorrow and I am worried about my suit choice, but I can’t imagine choosing clothes for TV!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Sarah,
It’s funny because I didn’t really think about what I’d wear until last night at around 11:30 when all the stores were closed and I was like “uh, I have nothing to wear!” They say black and white wash you out on camera and that bright solid colors (pink, blue, etc) look great since they’re more vibrant. But since almost everything in my closet is black I ended up just tossing the pink tank top on under the black jacket for a pop of color near my face. I don’t know if that helped the “washed out” issue but oh well, I tried! I’m sure your suit choice will be perfect, just picture everyone in their underwear and act confident on your interview! That was our plan over at the TV station and it seemed to have worked…

Chris@Celebrations At Home says
You guys were a natural!
I thought it was funny when I watched them in the studio have a conversation with someone via satelite, and all you could hear was the hosts chime in with a comment every so often. They were the only ones who could hear the interviewee via an ear piece!
MaryB says
Oh, you two are so adorable!! This was great; I thought you really came across as totally relaxed and totally “you!” YAY!
And were you taking turns talking on purpose, or did it just work out that way?
LOVED IT! I’m gonna go paint something.
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks MaryB,
We actually planned beforehand that John would talk about the laundry nook and the bedroom and I’d take the living room and the den but we agreed that if they tossed the question to someone (ex: John, now what did you guys do to the den?) that would override the previously assigned rooms. Luckily they just let us do our thing and the photos were in a perfect order to go back and forth (we didn’t even know the order beforehand) so that was nice. In a nutshell: we don’t know how it went so smoothly in the first and only take but we’re eternally grateful!

Yup, there is an echo in here – you were great and there is a show in your future.
By the way, people often leave an N off my name, so we’re even. I’ll let you know the next time I need one.

Congrats! You both did wonderfully! You both came of as very personable and (I say this because I personally would have been um-ing and uh-ing all over the place) very coherent! LOL
I have so say, Sherry – you’ve got gorgeous hair – you should really pull it out of the pony tail for your next tv stint! :)
April in CT says
Could you two kick any more butt? I think not! Great job you two!
We’re painting a head/foot board black this weekend and I’m using the steps in your furniture painting tutorial to work up a list of items to buy. So, if some frantic crazy lady posts a myriad of ridiculous questions on that post some time this weekend it’s just me. I have a few things I’m wondering about anyway so I may ask a couple questions before I get frantic so I have some semblance of sanity. :o)
Notesfromthegrove says
I got the chills about TEN TIMES watching you two! Because I feel like, “Hey! I KNOW those guys!” LOL. I’m a dork. But how awesome you guys got to do that! Great job.
LesleySW says
You guys did a great job. Live television can be kind of challenging because you never know where the interviewers will go. But you did really well and your renovations looked fantastic. Congrats on what will likely be the first of many such appearances.
Brandi U. says
Wow you guys did an awesome job! I would have been terrified. But you didn’t see nervous at all. Congratulations!

you guys are naturals on TV!! Great job, you didn’t even seem nervous altho I’m sure you were. No fumfering, no big nervous gulps of air, no shaky voices. Hello HGTV!! They have a few shows that do DIY projects on a limited budget but you have taken it to the extreme by doing your whole house. Can’t wait to see your next project.
By the way, the sales of white spray paint are up in my area, I am hooked on the look!

FREAKIN FANTASTIC!!!
Someone quick – send this on to HGTV…
Sherry the outfit was PERFECT. John, very handsome.
You guys were great!!
I wish they would have let you talk about your blog a little more…since it’s so stinkin wonderful.
Very nice.

Awesome job, guys!!! Very smooth, charming and knowledgeable! My fiance works for a news station, so I’m used to “dressing him” everyday. He’s as white and pasty as I am, so we avoid the white shirts with his suits; he has a ton of bright shirts and modern ties to go with them. Works like a charm! :-)
You two looked fabulous!! Looks like everyone matches, lol.
patti says
well done! neither of you looked or sounded nervous at all! i hope this opens lots of doors for you! :)
