This morning we rushed home from our big morning show interview on CBS6 and ran to our DVR to watch our little segment. The good news: we didn’t have any spit bubble incidents or crying and running off stage occurrences. In fact we managed to string together a few coherent sentences. Victory is ours!
We were pretty nervous when we learned that we were the very first interview of the show, but in hindsight it probably helped that we weren’t the last because the suspense would have built for another hour while we sat on our hands. It was nice to drop in, get mic’ed up, do the interview and find ourselves back in the car on the way home within an hour’s time! And the crew and hosts were fantastically nice, which really helped to put us at ease. Actually the entire atmosphere was suuuper laid back. We honestly thought there would be someone screaming “quiet on the set” and all these intense countdowns to taping but it was more like you blink your eyes and you’re on air and then you blink again and it’s all over. Thank goodness for that! Check it out below on Vimeo or see it here on YouTube.
Sure they said our old web address in the interview (although the subtitle got it right!) and added an extra N to our last name (“Petersnik” made us titter for about half an hour when we got home and noticed it) but we’re overjoyed that we lived to tell the tale of our stint on live TV! There’s just something unexpectedly scary about the pressure to get things right in the first take (we’re especially aware of this now that we’re making weekly videos which often require about five takes for us to make any sense at all). But we did it! And Burger even looked sideways at the TV screen when we played it back for him. Is it possible he’ll listen to us more now that we have TV cred?
And as a bonus, it was totally fun to see the weather girl point to a bunch of random spots on a green screen (and then watch it back at home to see that her seemingly random motions made total sense). How does she know where things are when it’s a giant green backdrop? We’re in awe of the magic that is on-air weather.
Anyway, we hope you guys enjoyed our little clip! Questions? Comments? Experiences on TV? Wardrobe critiques? Share and share alike!

You guys looked so calm and collected. I would have been a nervous wreck. Congrats!

well done! you guys looked great and sounded confident! what an accomplishment. (i tested out the green screen thing firsthand at nbc studios years ago, and it is really difficult because you’re doing a mirror image type thing!)

Bravo! You two should be the hosts; I thought you both had loads of TV appeal! Seriously… HGTV should get their mitts on you two! I’d watch.

Great work guys! You must be so stoked!
Cathy says
that was awesome! not sure why they picked the photo of your laundry when your kitchen is such a fab makeover, but hey… I guess choices had to be made :) Great job!
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks, Cathy! We actually included the laundry pics over the kitchen because they wanted us to share affordable, diy makeovers. So while I guess we could argue that our kitchen reno was cheaper than most, it still didn’t quite qualify as “chic on the cheap” (which was the unofficial title of our segment). Plus they really wanted us to mention that bamboo-blinds-instead-of-pricey-cabinets idea. Hope that helps!

you’re wondering how the meteorologists work their magic? i’m not sure if anyone else has mentioned how it works yet. would it spoil the fun to tell? well if you look closely next time you’re in a tv studio, the weather guy/girl will be constantly looking to the side, not always to the camera. on either side of their big green board are two sideways facing monitors that show them with the actual maps overlaying the green screen. their basically watching themselves. it takes some practice to learn to do well, but that’s how they do it!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Amy,
Yeah we saw those little monitors we just couldn’t believe she could read the teleprompter and sneak glances at herself on the other screens without appearing to look away from the camera for a moment! It was like someone juggling ten things and not even breaking a sweat. Very impressive!

I just watched the clip. You guys did great! So natural and you shared some useful information…especially for people who have never read your blog!
My husband and I taped an episode of Home Made Simple for TLC in our home in January. It was such a blast and so interesting to see how TV is made. They actually did yell “Quiet on the set. Rolling…action” on set in our home which we found so funny. I guess we just always assumed that was something that you hear, but isn’t actually used. It was on our show. (I blogged about the show on my blog. It’s tagged Home Made Simple.)
Blaine says
Looks great… that’s our sister TV station. If you’re ever down here in Norfolk/Va Beach… I’d love to have you two on our show!
