And not only did we make the mag, we actually made the cover. I know! There may or may not have been some excited screaming for a few hours after we found out.
Needless to say we’ve been beyond excited about this little write up (which was shot back in November when they also filmed our video house tour). It was a pretty busy day… and Burger got to meet a crew of ten people for the occasion (a hair & make-up lady, a wardrobe stylist, an assistant to the wardrobe stylist, the photographer of course, his two assistants, the creative director, the prop stylist, his assistant, and a videographer).
Yeah, that’s right. They dressed us up (no those aren’t our clothes, but it is our dog!), powdered our faces (well, not Burger’s) and told us to smile pretty for the camera. We were both super self conscious (so many eyes- and lenses- on us) but we tried to keep our cool and act like it was just another ordinary day at Casa Petersik.
A bunch of you guys have actually seen the spread already since you opened your mailboxes and saw our smiling faces! The hilarious part of the story is that we actually never got a copy of our own (they said it would arrive around March 30th but it has yet to find its way to our house) so we finally got to see the story this weekend thanks to a friend who got the mag and met up with us to pass it along! The Nest magazine is a subscription only publication (they send it out to over 200,000 newlyweds, but it can’t be picked up in stores), so of course we were beyond thrilled when our friend called us to say that she had a copy in her hot little hands.
And now that we’ve seen it, we couldn’t be more enamored (and relieved- our nerdy self-consciousness isn’t nearly as obvious in the pictures as we thought it was). Of course the photographer, David A. Land, captured our house beautifully, and the staff over at The Nest did such an amazing job putting it all together. Oh and could our little fur baby have looked any cuter? Did you see that pooch eye contact on the cover? Is Burger not destined to be a star?!
Psst: here’s that post full of behind the scenes details so you can see how a national magazine really captures all those glossy shots.

Congrats! You know, I always wonder if the old owners have stumbled upon your blog or seen the remodeling pics anywhere and what they would think. I’m sure they love the work you’ve done but wonder how much they love hearing things they did called drab or ugly. :) I actually know the old owners of my home and the husband made comments on how weird it is seeing a room painted a different color or the kitchen remodel I did.
Anyway, congrats again! I can’t wait to see the scanned in pages so I can read the text!

I found you guys via the Nest mag too (must be because we just got married in Feb & were graduated to the Nest).
I have to say your home is gorgeous and totally inspiring! We bought our house last May and so far all our renovations are unseen (insulation, rewiring, venting, new water heater). All that boring stuff that you’re so proud of but noone else gets!
Your blog has gotten me so excited to start working on the visible bits. We went browsing at some of our favorite furniture stores this past weekend (WestElm, Ikea, EQ3, pottery barn) and I found two “inspiration” pillows to start my projects! I’m also planning on asking for a design consult for my birthday!
You two are amazing!

Sherry, John & Burger,
Congrats!
You’ve been spotted in another magazine. I just picked up the Summer 2009 BH&G “Do It Yourself” issue. The pictures of your little family and your home look great! Burger is a canine star – he’s posing on page 84. Can’t wait to read this issue from cover to cover.

Congratulations!! What a huge honor! Everything looks great, of course!

this definitely is a payback for all your hard work with remodeling and blogging :):):) I hope you plan to frame it somewhere in your house . This is way too cool!

Hey Gina,
Maybe we’ll just leave it on the coffee table and casually admit that it’s us when guests notice it. Hahaha. Just kidding. Maybe…

Congrats on the magazine cover. I am trying to find out how I can get the magazine. I love your site! Do you know whether or not they still offer magazine subscriptions?? I am trying to find out but so far no luck. Let me know. For now, I’ll just keep looking at your site.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Cynthia,
We’re actually a bit unclear about how the magazine actually works. In fact we really wanted to do a giveaway so a few lucky readers could win their own copy to peruse, but The Nest said that they’re currently not offering subscriptions. From what we understand they randomly send out 200,000 copies to newlyweds (none of whom have subscribed, but perhaps they entered their info on theknot.com or thenest.com and were randomly selected to receive it). But fear not, we’re definitely going to scan the article so that people can click it to read every last word, which will be almost as fun as having the glossy version in your lap!
xoxo,
Sherry

This is so fantastic! Gosh, look at all you have accomplished in just the last year alone. You guys are great! :)

Sherry-
DIY Magazine – Summer 09 arrived and you were featured. :)
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Nicole,
We’re actually regular contributers to DIY magazine (you’ve noticed part 2 of a 3 part series that we’ve written about our house) so of course we’ll be scanning that story for all to see. Burger does look especially cute in that issue too, doesn’t he? Stay tuned for all those details soon…

Sherry & John,
I found your blog from this write-up in The Nest’s magazine! It was, believe it or not, in the bathroom of a recently married friend’s house at her house warming party. I’ve added your blog to my daily reads. You two are fantastic!
Hayat says
Hey Sherry & John,
I stumbled upon your blog last November when I was looking for decorations tips for our new home. I loved (well still do)your blog; it is merely full of fabulous ideas that inspired me to make our house a livable place.
I was so excited to see the both of you on the cover of “The Nest Magazine” that I screamed “OH MY GOD, I “know” this couple”. I even bragged about you making the magazine cover to some friends:). Sherry, I loved the dress on you. You looked stunning and John, you are simply handsome. As for the little Burger, he looked so adorable!
Congratulations! Bravo! Félécitation! You guys deserve it. I can’t wait ’til you have your own TV Show on DIY channel or HGTV:).
Best of Luck to the both of you, and keep doing what you are doing because you are GREAT at it.
Thank you,
Hayat

hey to the green pillow girl (or guy, sorry…skimming) – I’m pretty sure it’s actually a discontinued Thomas Paul pillow – but you can buy the fabric at Calico Corners and whip one up yourself if you’re crafty:

This is incredible! I’m way late in the game, but my master bedroom re-decorating looks almost identical to yours, and you even have my coveted Target Pony Head!
I love your place, and it’s great to see another couple cherish their mid-century home as much as we do!
Melissa says
I absolutely love your home and blog! It has been a great source of design inspiration!
I was wondering if you knew where I can find the orange and red pillows that were used on your living room couch? Thanks in advance!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Melissa! Glad to hear you’re loving what you’re seeing. Those pillows were actually props brought in by The Nest crew so we’re unsure of the exact store they come from – thought we think they may be from Pottery Barn. The shoot happened last November so they’re probably out-of-stock now unfortunately, so eBay’s probably your best bet for finding them now. Hope that helps!

Megan Zepeda says
Hey guys… I have been looking for The Nest Magazine for MONTHS! Where can I get it?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Megan,
Ahhhh, the elusive Nest Magazine. From what we’ve been told, The Nest only gets sent to a subscriber list that appears to be compiled from users who registered on either their web site or on The Knot. Though there doesen’t seem to be a surefire way to get on the list. We’re bummed it’s not sold in stores too, so sorry we can’t give you more hints on how to track one down. Maybe ask on Craigslist or The Nest message board if anyone’s got one they’d spare?
-John
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Megan,
Unfortunately The Nest magazine is a subscription only mag so they send it out to 200,000 newlyweds but there’s no way to get your hands on a copy. Isn’t that a shame? Here’s hoping they open it up to newsstands soon- it really is a great read!

Hi
Regarding subscription of the Knot magazine, if you click on the tiny photo of the magazine at the top right on their website, it brings you to the subscription page. Not sure how long it has been working, but I subscribed a month ago and my first magazine arrived this morning. Very very excited ($14.99 for 4 issues).
Love your magazine spread guys. House looks fabulous.
Victoria says
Btw…I should have said the Nest Magazine in my last comment!

Thanks for the tip! They recently reinstated the subscription option (about three months ago). We’re so glad you’re enjoying it!

Hi guys,
I am in love with your work!! I live in a small city in the country of Australia. We dont have anyone with your flavour out here. I would love to know where i can go to get a copy of your mag and If I was to try your service can all the correspondence be done by email? If so please let me know.
Kind regards
Alana
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Alana,
We’re regular contributer. To Do It Yourself magazine (here’s a link to a recent column: https://www.younghouselove.com/2010/01/he-said-she-said-our-diy-column-is-back/ ) so perhaps you can follow the link and click over to their site (diyideas.com) to snag a subscription. As for our design services, unfortunately we don’t take on international clients just because we’re not familiar with the shops in your neck of the woods so finding items to work into a mood board would be too much of a challenge. So sorry we can’t be of more help! You can view over 130 mood boards that we’ve already made (for lots of color, floor plan, and accessory ideas!) by following the link at the bottom of our Design Advice page. Hope it helps!

I am a fairly new reader to your blog and I wasn’t aware that you guys wrote a column in Do It Yourself. When I saw the most recent article I was like, “I kind of know these guys” lol. Obviously I do not know you but through your blog I feel like I do. I was a great surprise! Every time I am on younghouselove.com I find something new, fresh, and inspiring. Thank you for the great advice and I wish yall great success and happiness :)

I also live in Richmond VA, and Im also a first time home buyer with a cute little brick rancher similar to your, have my washer and dryer hookup in the kichen any ideas on that??? Thanks so much!!!!!! :)And congrats on the cover!!!!
YoungHouseLove says
A lot a kitchens in Europe have washers and dryers. Maybe you can get sleek white front loaders and extend the counter over them (butcher block is always nice) and paint all the kitchen cabinets white so they feel cohesive? Good luck!

Sherry and John, you are amazing and such an inspiration. I live in Australia and have just found your site. So happy I did! Can I ask where you buy most of your decorator pieces, such as beautiful lights? Do you mostly go online or insanely spend half your time trawling through shops with a small child?! Thankyou for sharing your life with us!
YoungHouseLove says
So glad you found us! We actually have a source list for our first house (since the current one is still in progress we haven’t gotten around to that but many of our furnishings and accessories are the same because we moved them with us). Just check this out to see where we get things (a lot of times they’re from thrift stores or craigslist along with affordable big box stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot and Target. We do love local shops too, especially places like nearby lighting outlets. Hope it helps!
