We bought nearly $3,800 worth of kitchen appliances this weekend. But if you know anything about us, you know we love a deal. So here’s how we managed to shave off about $1,400 from that total (we ended up paying 63% of their original cost). Yee haw!
Before I dive into the heavy math, let’s cover some basic questions first. Why new appliances? We’ll make this one multiple choice:
- A: We prefer stainless steel over the current bisque / black mix we’ve got going on.
- B: The wall oven has a big burn mark up the front of it and cooks/burns things unevenly.
- C: Our refrigerator is slowly dying (the ice maker doesn’t work and ever since Hurricane Irene it has been cooling unevenly – icy milk anyone?).
- D: All of the above.
If you answered D, you’ve either been paying close attention or just know that “All of the above” is usually a solid answer. We knew about these “issues” when we bought the house (except C) so we went into this house purchase knowing we’d need to replace our appliances during a future kitchen makeover. So we’ve been saving our pennies for the last 10 months (many folks wondered why we didn’t just dive into a kitchen makeover as soon as we moved, but we like to really think about how we’ll use a room – and we also gotta save up before big purchases like these). Even before landing on our peninsula plan a few weeks ago, we’ve been researching replacements and waiting for the best deal and the right appliances for us. So for the past few months we’ve been:
- keeping an eye on craigslist for discounted applainces that might work
- hitting up secondhand stores & thrift stores (like the ReStore)
- visiting our local Sears “Scratch & Dent” store
Sadly, none of those “discount” routes were panning out (nothing on craigslist had the right dimensions or matched, secondhand stores weren’t selling much more than a few old black or white microwaves and dishwashers, and even the scratch & dent store was selling things at pretty comparable prices to new appliances from Lowe’s or Home Depot since most things are on sale around this time of the year whether they’re scratched or dented or not). Then we got a sign from the Lowe’s website that this was the weekend to pounce:
Well, actually a few signs. Lowe’s is our favorite spot to buy appliances since their prices tend to be the lowest we’ve found and they’ll price match. It’s actually where we bought all of the appliances for our first house which we used and loved for the entire 4.5 years that we lived there. So seeing their website loaded with discounts was enough to get our butts in gear and make some decisions.
One easy decision was the brand of appliance that we preferred. We lived very happily with a kitchen full of Frigidaires in our last house, so 4.5 satisfied years made us more comfortable with that company than any review could (in almost 5 years of use none of them ever needed to be serviced and still looked mint when we moved). Plus, we wanted to buy all the same brand so the stainless color was consistent from appliance to appliance (some stainless fronts are more brushed than others and can look kind of cobbled together if they’re not consistent). In an icing-on-the-cake scenario, we actually ended up getting Frigidaire Gallery models that have a protective coating atop the stainless steel to prevent fingerprints (something we really wanted since we were always wiping down our last ones). So go ahead Clara, do your worst. But before we learned about the fingerprint-proof stainless covering, first it came down to picking out the most functional, fitting, and affordable models for our kitchen. Here’s what we ended up with:
- A 22.6 Cu. Ft. Energy Star Counter-Depth Side-by-Side Refrigerator: We learned that our current fridge is actually counter depth, so we definitely couldn’t get a standard depth, which would jut even further into the room. This new one is actually more spacious than our current one and the one at our last house (so we’re psyched to gain more space without giving up the counter-depth dream), but that’s a story for another day. More on that soon.
- An Electric Convection Stove (with Quick-Boil feature): We currently have a convection wall oven and countertop range… but those are extremely expensive to replace, so we’re going to convert our kitchen to a standard stove situation. Again, that’s a story for another day (soon!). Oh but the added convection and quick-boil features are something we happily would have paid an extra $100-200 for on top of a basic range price, but thanks to sale prices it was just $10 more than a similar model without those features.
- A Microwave: Nothing interesting to say about this one other than it’s very similar to the last one we had and loved.
- An Energy Star Dishwasher: Yay. Our first house didn’t have a dishwasher until we added one and it changed our life. And we love that it’s Energy Star like the fridge.
Even after almost a year of saving for this investment, the prices above are more than a little scary to two cheapskates like us. Thankfully each appliance was already marked down in the store (maybe October is a good markdown month?). The greatest markdown was the fridge (down $500!). The salesman said the price flip flops between $1799 and $1299 and we just caught it at the right time. On top of that, we also caught this at the right time:
The fridge and dishwasher were both Energy Star so that knocked those prices down another 15% (sadly cooking appliances like stoves & microwaves typically aren’t Energy Star rated). Happily the stove got the 10% off treatment thanks to the advertised sale that we happened to spot on their website. But the microwave, who was already on sale for $269, didn’t qualify (poor guy – things had to be $397 or more).
But all four of them earned this next discount:
We’ve had a Lowe’s card for a while (back from an appliance purchase in our last house, actually) so we scored our usual 5% off on our total purchase price. Down came those already discounted prices (we love that they allowed them to “stack”).
Then on top of that…
…Virginia was having a tax-free weekend on Energy Star appliances, effectively taking another 5% off the fridge and dishwasher (since tax here is 5%)! So that’s how our grand total ended up being about 63% of what it would’ve cost originally. A total savings of $1,392. Which essentially means we got the stove and the microwave for free (their original prices add up to $1,248 before all the discounts). The best part is that many of the counter depth fridges that we looked at were more than $2,500 on their own, so we’re stunned that we got all of our appliances for less. Take that baby to the market!
They still have to be delivered (for free, as always at Lowe’s) which is why this post has no pictures of the new items in place- but we’ll definitely share pics when they come. Oh and for anyone wondering, we’ll be donating our old appliances to the ReStore since they do free pick-ups (although we might craigslist the cooktop and microwave since they’re in newer condition). We’ve had a productive weekend in the kitchen, so there are a few other ideas/decisions/changes to share. So hopefully we’ll be back with lots of kitchen happenings over the next few days! We’re still only about 2% there, but the ball is officially rolling!
Okay, so who else saved some moolah this weekend? Er, well, spent some moolah but not as much moolah as they might’ve originally spent? Ack, you know what I mean. Oh and to any fellow Virginians, all of the sale prices that we took advantage of should be valid through the end of today (the tax free thing along with the 15 & 10% off sales and 5% off any Lowe’s card purchase). Just throwing that out there in case it helps!
Psst- Anyone replacing old appliances with Energy Star ones might also be eligible for government refunds (of over $100 if you’re replacing your dishwasher & fridge) so you can go here and click the button with the map on it to see what they’re giving back in your state.
Molly says
Both our washer and dryer conked out on us this weekend and we took advantage of the same sale to replace them–at least if they had to die, they died on a good sale weekend!

1. My thrifty find this weekend is an almost new Ikea Ektorp sofa w/ never been used white slipcover on Craigslist for $200 (half off). We haven’t actually picked it up yet because it has been a rainy weekend & Monday here in GA, but fingers crossed it all works out tomorrow afternoon.
2. Thank you for the step by step in thrifty appliance shopping!! We plan to buy a house next year, and like someone else said, I’m relieved to see that buying all new appliances can be NOT so scary expensive.
We shop the same way as y’all – saving and waiting then finally pounce on the excellent deal!

I love it. “Take that baby to the market” is totally going to be the catchphrase of 2011…

We bought a stainless steel dishwasher and refrigerator this time last year and scored some great deals. I asked why prices were so great and was told the new model year was rolling out so the prior year models were heavily discounted. Who knew appliances had model years just like cars? My old white oven looked so forlorn against all those sparkly new beauties that we replaced it over Labor Day weekend with the matching one to our fridge and dishwasher. We did a whole kitchen remodel 5 years ago so the new appliances were like a mini facelift, a little kitchen botox.
YoungHouseLove says
Haha- a little kitchen botox = hilarious. Love it.

When I replaced my electric stove I first chose an induction cooktop. While I was awaiting it’s delivery, I was doing more research and happened to read the instruction booklet. Lo and behold, it stated that using cookware that had stamps on the bottom would not work on the cooktop!
The idea was that the depressed portion of the metal would interrupt the continuous contact with the cooktop and that could cause problems and void the warranty.
Of course, all of my pots and pans are cast iron and are stamped on the bottom. I called the manufacturer (GE) and they told me that it rarely causes a problem but when it does it voids the warranty and they can tell that the cookware was the problem! They actually suggested that I buy new cookware. Instead, I called and changed the model – I ended up saving $200 to boot so it all worked out in the end.
YoungHouseLove says
Wow- that’s so smart! We can’t use cast iron with our glass cooktop – but so smart of you to notice and make that switch before anything got damaged!

Hey you all!
Just a tip for future purchases… Sears will price match and match all discounts as long as you have proof in print. They will also give you 10% off the difference between their price and the competitors price. Ex: Lowe’s price is $500, Sears price is $600. They would match the $500 price and then give you an additional discount of $10 since there is a $100 price difference. So you would pay $490.
After seeing your great deal on the front load washer and dryer that you all purchased earlier in the year, my husband and I decided to upgrade as well. We used the same combination of discounts on the exact same washer and dryer that you all purchased. We just took a printout of the online price and a copy of the local ad to our Sears store and we got an additional $40-$50ish dollars off. So, our total came out to be in the $590ish range. Not a huge difference but every little bit helps!
Just thought I’d share that with you all and your readers. I’m assuming most Sears stores have similar policies. It’s an easy way to save a little extra on big purchases!
YoungHouseLove says
Such a great tip Hannah! Thanks for sharing! I think Lowe’s just started doing that too (giving 10% of the difference when they price match). Love it!

Ana says
Just curious–why an electric stove rather than gas? Was it a safety thing? Or just a matter of price?
YoungHouseLove says
We just don’t have a gas hookup in our kitchen (there’s no gas in our entire house since we have oil heat, so adding that would be lots of money). We’re used to an electric range since we had one in our last house too, so we just decided to go with what we were set up to have.

So funny, I was just looking at appliances at Lowe’s too. I live in CA so this might not apply to you, but I also found a mail-in rebate for all Kitchen Aid appliances on the Lowe’s website. It was in the ‘my account’ section and I searched for rebates. (I think that’s an actual menu option rather than something you have to type into the search box.) You never know; you may be able to shave some more off the low prices you already scored!

I was lucky enough to combine tax free on Energy Efficient products with a discount on Energy products when I installed my windows. The crazy thing was that my local farmers co-op actually had the windows and the deal so long as I custom ordered them. I also had a contractor who was out of work install them and his labor plus the windows was cheaper than the quote for just windows from Home Depot. Throw in the tax bonus when we filed and I love these windows so much. I always tend to love things more when I get a deal on them.
Jenny says
Not to be a buzz-kill but we’ve had the same set for 2 years now(except the gas stove version). Our dishwasher started make a really loud screeching noise & after having a service repairman out to check everything out have found that the motor has gone bad which is about a $200-$300 repair. Have loved it otherwise & we may have just gotten a dud but would highly suggest purchasing an extended warranty just in case!

Oh man so sorry to hear that Jenny! Here’s hoping ours lasts as long as the one in our last house. Fingers crossed…

We have the same Frigidaire Gallery appliances! We bought a foreclosed brick ranch in SC (similar to yall’s!) over the summer and got these babies during a similar 4th of July sale at Lowe’s. 3 months later we are still IN LOVE with them. I wipe the fronts with stainless-steel safe Pledge just to say I did it but I’ve never seen a fingerprint on them. Everything works great (even the microwave…it sensor-cooks baked potatoes PERFECTLY) and we haven’t had any problems. Hopefully they will treat you guys as well as they’ve treated us so far! :)

We tried running off to Lowe’s last night to buy absolutely *everything* for our bathroom remodel, since we had someone to watch the kids, but wouldn’t you know it, they were closed. Boo. Apparently Lowe’s closes at 8:00 on Sundays. So that didn’t work. I am very much looking forward to buying new kitchen appliances for our next big purchase though. What made you want to buy everything separate instead of a big appliance package. I didn’t look too into detail, but in yesterday’s Best Buy ad, there was a Frigidaire set for $1688.92. I bet the stuff you bought was a better quality, which is smart. If anything is the same, I wonder if you can get some money off the price you got from Lowe’s.

Sorry for the horrible grammar!

Thanks for the tip Becky- I believe everything in our line was the upgraded stuff (Frigidaire Gallery as opposed to Frigidaire which has add ons like convection and the stainless steel protection and upgraded handles and dials that are stainless instead of black). Definitely good to double check though!

Did you consider a french door fridge? What positives/negatives do you see with the side by side? Thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
We did consider french door fridges, but this one was the best size & price for our space (some of them were too big or too much money). We also thought we’d prefer a side by side since you can store freezer items that are used often at a nice comfortable height (no bending) on shelving that separates stuff (some of the french door fridges seemed like a meat locker on the bottom without much in the way of shelving). We also like that the door handles are up out of reach for Clara (we worried she’d pull open a bottom drawer all the time if she could reach it (and stick things like our keys or the dog in there- haha).

I’m curious about how you guys save money. I’m guessing you have multiple things you’re saving for at a time. So do you save a certain amount toward each thing every month? Or do you just save a set amount and wait for sales like this weekend? Hope that’s not too nosey.
YoungHouseLove says
We just have one big savings account that we add stuff to each month. In our minds we have a tally of things we’re saving towards (and usually have an order of priority, so we know what we’ll buy next, as soon as savings gets to the right amount and we find the right price). Hope it helps!

Love it! I didn’t have the extra money to replace my cheap dishwasher this weekend, but when I do it’ll be a GE, because that’s what the local appliance store sells. They’ve done repairs on all my elderly appliances (of various brands) and when my washer died in 2009 I bought a GE replacement that I love. When I lived in Chesterfield I bought from Lowe’s because there was no local appliance store, but I’m lucky living in my little southern Virginia town to have one.

BEWARE OF FRIGIADARE APPLIANCES!!!!!! We bought a bunch of their appliances when we redid our kitchen and we HATE HATE HATE every single one. Seriously. The dishwasher leaks and makes all kinds of crazy noises. The microwave has rust marks on the outside. The refrigerator makes noises that of course don’t happen when the repair man is there. The gas burners on the stove don’t light consistently and have been replaced three times under warranty and still don’t work. I so wish we hadn’t gone with the same brand throughout. We are now counting the days until they break so we can buy new ones. BEWARE.

I didn’t score a deal this weekend (because I was in Blacksburg – sorry John) but I did score a fabulous deal last week, and all because of you two! Our built-in overhead microwave died a couple of months ago, and I’d been randomly hitting the Sears Outlet, but it is not close by, so I couldn’t get there very often. They would usually only have one or two in stock that would fit, and were the white I need to match the other appliances, but I was never sold on one. Plus, even with measurements in hand, I was afraid anything new wouldn’t fit exactly right.
Fast forward to last week: I found myself driving by the Re-Store, so I ducked in to take a quick look around. And there it was: my EXACT microwave. I got an employee to test it out, it worked, I discovered that it was on sale, and now it sits in my house. I think for $125.00, it is a deal, even if it dies the same death as its predecessor in a few years. If it weren’t for this blog, I would never have heard of the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store. So, THANKS!!!

Not this weekend; I saved on Memorial Day weekend (at Best Buy). And I didn’t save as much as you guys did, but I love the appliances just the same. I love Frigidaire, too, but went with Samsung because I really really LOVED the LED lighting (less glare). But my next choice over the Samsung was actually the model you looked at with Frigidaire.
I didn’t get a dishwasher because the kitchen needs new cabinets and a slightly altered layout before I can put one in, but got the fridge, oven and microwave. I splurged big time on the Dual Flex Convection Oven (it’s a Dual oven, but with a removable divider inside so that it can also be a full sized oven when needed).
And I need to remove the cabinets over the stove and install a shelf before the microwave can be installed because the current venthood cabinets are too low.
My fridge sticks out, but I’m fine with that because the doorway it sticks into will eventually be widened so that it’s not an issue.
Anyway, here’s a picture of the kitchen so far: http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c290/jzygail/misc022.jpg

We felt so good about ourselves that we wandered over to the televisions and treated ourselves to a 32″ LCD for the master bedroom. We got an open-box price of $229 (regular retail price $449).
That was such a good day…

I have Frigidaire appliances as well, and they are great! I have the same dishwasher pictured (from Lowe’s), and it is so quiet you’ll find yourself making sure it’s really running the first few times you use it.

I don’t know if I’ve ever been happier for a stranger. Way to know what you want and then be patient and diligent for it! I feel like knowing what you want is half the battle but then when you (finally) know it’s SO tempting to run out and get it immediately. I admire you both for those traits!
