We bought nearly $3,800 worth of kitchen appliances this weekend. But if you know anything about us, you know we love a deal. So here’s how we managed to shave off about $1,400 from that total (we ended up paying 63% of their original cost). Yee haw!
Before I dive into the heavy math, let’s cover some basic questions first. Why new appliances? We’ll make this one multiple choice:
- A: We prefer stainless steel over the current bisque / black mix we’ve got going on.
- B: The wall oven has a big burn mark up the front of it and cooks/burns things unevenly.
- C: Our refrigerator is slowly dying (the ice maker doesn’t work and ever since Hurricane Irene it has been cooling unevenly – icy milk anyone?).
- D: All of the above.
If you answered D, you’ve either been paying close attention or just know that “All of the above” is usually a solid answer. We knew about these “issues” when we bought the house (except C) so we went into this house purchase knowing we’d need to replace our appliances during a future kitchen makeover. So we’ve been saving our pennies for the last 10 months (many folks wondered why we didn’t just dive into a kitchen makeover as soon as we moved, but we like to really think about how we’ll use a room – and we also gotta save up before big purchases like these). Even before landing on our peninsula plan a few weeks ago, we’ve been researching replacements and waiting for the best deal and the right appliances for us. So for the past few months we’ve been:
- keeping an eye on craigslist for discounted applainces that might work
- hitting up secondhand stores & thrift stores (like the ReStore)
- visiting our local Sears “Scratch & Dent” store
Sadly, none of those “discount” routes were panning out (nothing on craigslist had the right dimensions or matched, secondhand stores weren’t selling much more than a few old black or white microwaves and dishwashers, and even the scratch & dent store was selling things at pretty comparable prices to new appliances from Lowe’s or Home Depot since most things are on sale around this time of the year whether they’re scratched or dented or not). Then we got a sign from the Lowe’s website that this was the weekend to pounce:
Well, actually a few signs. Lowe’s is our favorite spot to buy appliances since their prices tend to be the lowest we’ve found and they’ll price match. It’s actually where we bought all of the appliances for our first house which we used and loved for the entire 4.5 years that we lived there. So seeing their website loaded with discounts was enough to get our butts in gear and make some decisions.
One easy decision was the brand of appliance that we preferred. We lived very happily with a kitchen full of Frigidaires in our last house, so 4.5 satisfied years made us more comfortable with that company than any review could (in almost 5 years of use none of them ever needed to be serviced and still looked mint when we moved). Plus, we wanted to buy all the same brand so the stainless color was consistent from appliance to appliance (some stainless fronts are more brushed than others and can look kind of cobbled together if they’re not consistent). In an icing-on-the-cake scenario, we actually ended up getting Frigidaire Gallery models that have a protective coating atop the stainless steel to prevent fingerprints (something we really wanted since we were always wiping down our last ones). So go ahead Clara, do your worst. But before we learned about the fingerprint-proof stainless covering, first it came down to picking out the most functional, fitting, and affordable models for our kitchen. Here’s what we ended up with:
- A 22.6 Cu. Ft. Energy Star Counter-Depth Side-by-Side Refrigerator: We learned that our current fridge is actually counter depth, so we definitely couldn’t get a standard depth, which would jut even further into the room. This new one is actually more spacious than our current one and the one at our last house (so we’re psyched to gain more space without giving up the counter-depth dream), but that’s a story for another day. More on that soon.
- An Electric Convection Stove (with Quick-Boil feature): We currently have a convection wall oven and countertop range… but those are extremely expensive to replace, so we’re going to convert our kitchen to a standard stove situation. Again, that’s a story for another day (soon!). Oh but the added convection and quick-boil features are something we happily would have paid an extra $100-200 for on top of a basic range price, but thanks to sale prices it was just $10 more than a similar model without those features.
- A Microwave: Nothing interesting to say about this one other than it’s very similar to the last one we had and loved.
- An Energy Star Dishwasher: Yay. Our first house didn’t have a dishwasher until we added one and it changed our life. And we love that it’s Energy Star like the fridge.
Even after almost a year of saving for this investment, the prices above are more than a little scary to two cheapskates like us. Thankfully each appliance was already marked down in the store (maybe October is a good markdown month?). The greatest markdown was the fridge (down $500!). The salesman said the price flip flops between $1799 and $1299 and we just caught it at the right time. On top of that, we also caught this at the right time:
The fridge and dishwasher were both Energy Star so that knocked those prices down another 15% (sadly cooking appliances like stoves & microwaves typically aren’t Energy Star rated). Happily the stove got the 10% off treatment thanks to the advertised sale that we happened to spot on their website. But the microwave, who was already on sale for $269, didn’t qualify (poor guy – things had to be $397 or more).
But all four of them earned this next discount:
We’ve had a Lowe’s card for a while (back from an appliance purchase in our last house, actually) so we scored our usual 5% off on our total purchase price. Down came those already discounted prices (we love that they allowed them to “stack”).
Then on top of that…
…Virginia was having a tax-free weekend on Energy Star appliances, effectively taking another 5% off the fridge and dishwasher (since tax here is 5%)! So that’s how our grand total ended up being about 63% of what it would’ve cost originally. A total savings of $1,392. Which essentially means we got the stove and the microwave for free (their original prices add up to $1,248 before all the discounts). The best part is that many of the counter depth fridges that we looked at were more than $2,500 on their own, so we’re stunned that we got all of our appliances for less. Take that baby to the market!
They still have to be delivered (for free, as always at Lowe’s) which is why this post has no pictures of the new items in place- but we’ll definitely share pics when they come. Oh and for anyone wondering, we’ll be donating our old appliances to the ReStore since they do free pick-ups (although we might craigslist the cooktop and microwave since they’re in newer condition). We’ve had a productive weekend in the kitchen, so there are a few other ideas/decisions/changes to share. So hopefully we’ll be back with lots of kitchen happenings over the next few days! We’re still only about 2% there, but the ball is officially rolling!
Okay, so who else saved some moolah this weekend? Er, well, spent some moolah but not as much moolah as they might’ve originally spent? Ack, you know what I mean. Oh and to any fellow Virginians, all of the sale prices that we took advantage of should be valid through the end of today (the tax free thing along with the 15 & 10% off sales and 5% off any Lowe’s card purchase). Just throwing that out there in case it helps!
Psst- Anyone replacing old appliances with Energy Star ones might also be eligible for government refunds (of over $100 if you’re replacing your dishwasher & fridge) so you can go here and click the button with the map on it to see what they’re giving back in your state.

We took advantage of the same deals at Lowe’s this weekend. With a baby on the way, we needed a bigger washer/dryer than the old hooked stackable that came with the house when we bought it three years ago and we bought the remaining six replacement windows we needed. We got an already marked down sale price, plus the 15% on the washer and 10% on the dryer, another 10% thanks to the military discount, the no sales tax, and the 18 months 0% financing (though we’re able to already pay off more 3/4 of what we purchased). Though it was a lot of money to spend at one time, I’m glad we got the discount that we did. Yay Lowe’s!

Nice work!! We got our $3K stainless steal fridge for a little over $700 at our local Sears dent center. It was brand new, but just had a pinch mark on the side from a forklift! We also snagged a new stainless oven from craiglist (he didn’t realize it was propane and he had natural gas.)$375 and fabulous dishwasher from craigslist(fancy folks upgrading to stainless were getting rid of a brand new washer)$160. Gotta love a good deal!! We snagged 2 fabulous free finds this weekend too! A child’s rocking chair and a fun bird house we put in the nursery!

You should check with your electric utility provider to see iif they are offering rebates for purchasing new energy eefficient appliances. The company I work for (in Florida, sorry) is offering a TON of rebates right now…including $35 for recycling your old fridge (which they will pick up).
Worth a phone call.
Congrats on the new appliances!

Awesome! I just bought these same appliances for our new house last summer! For the most part, we have been VERY pleased with them… but I would love to hear how you guys wind up liking them. We’ve had some major problems with our dishwasher and have already had Frigidaire replace it once. Please give us an update after a few months!

What an amazing deal! Your kitchen is going to be so gorgeous when it’s done. We spent and committed to spend a ton of money this weekend. We’re making over the world’s ugliest brick fireplace (seriously, it’s 100 square feet of bone-ugly brick – thing looks like a pizza oven). Just finished paying off the masons and then put a deposit on the custom door. The fireplace shop shaved off some costs by giving us a free can of special firebox paint, throwing in free bags of lava rock, letting us use the Angie’s List coupon that didn’t really apply, etc. Still I had to sit down and breathe into a paper bag for a while.
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, it sounds like they gave you some awesome deals! And it’ll all be so gorgeous when it’s done! Good luck with it all.

I currently have a stainless fridge, white microwave, bisque stove/oven, and a black dishwasher(that doesn’t work). The fridge has been making weird noises lately too. I’ve wanted to replace everything since I bought my house a little over a year ago but knew it wasn’t an affordable thing to do right now. But you’ve just inspired me to save up some money and start watching the advertisements!
So excited to see what’s next!

Wow, good for you guys! Did you all purchase a warranty for these too or are those included in the price?
YoungHouseLove says
They come with a free one year warranty but the last time we bought Frigidaires (for our first kitchen) we got an extended warranty for about $250 but never used it (no service calls at all in almost 5 years!). So this time we thought we’d chance it and go without an extended warranty since the brand worked so well for us last time (and we figure if something’s a lemon we’ll know in the first year when it’s still under the free warranty). If we do have to call them for help down the line it might end up being a less than $250 fix so we might still be ok. We’ll keep you posted as we go for sure!

I like to use my American Express card for big purchases like electronics and appliances, because they will double the warranty! So what was a 1 year warranty becomes a 2 year warranty. If anything goes wrong, you can call up Amex and they’ll reimburse you for repairs or a replacement. Cool stuff!
Those extended warranties that the stores sell are usually a bit of a rip off. You’d be better off setting aside money in a savings account than to buy extended warranties for all your stuff.

That’s really smart!

John said in the post that your current fridge is counter depth as opposed to standard and I was wondering if this means you have to make any changes to the peninsula? I am so looking forward to your kitchen update!
I saved no money this weekend because I lost a battle to the glass insert in a poster frame and had to get a several stitches. I am so impressed you replaced the glass in the frames at Clara’s level. Even at 23 years old, those pose a major risk for me.
YoungHouseLove says
We have a big plan that we’re mulling over when it comes to the fridge/peninsula thing. More details when we’re sure it can happen (aka: as we go)! And oh man, so sorry to hear that you had to get stitches this weekend! Feel better!

Oooh I’m jealous. All of our appliances are mismatched atm. Black microwave, white dishwasher, stainless fridge, almond/black oven.
I love our dishwasher but it’s a dingy off-white. I’m planning on trying that stainless film on it and just replacing the control panel for a black one. If the film is a bust I have black appliance spraypaint as a back up.
Our oven is older than our house (>15 years), and I loathe it. It gets the job done, but I dream of a stainless steel double oven. Right now the hubby is in firefighter academy so our income is very tight, but as soon as he graduates and gets a job, the oven is probably going to be our first purchase.
YoungHouseLove says
Ooh definitely tell us how the stainless film works out!

Here is another refund tip some local energy companies have programs to encourage folks to up grade to energy saving appliances. My local company in South Eastern Michigan (DTE) does a limited number of rebates every few months, I received a rebate of $250 when I put in a new furnace (along with the reduced heating costs and a tax credit on my fed taxes that bad boy will pay for itself in three years!) and $50 and free pick up of my old appliance when I replaced my fridge.
Margaret says
We got a brand new dishwasher for $100, because the old one died and was covered by the home warranty that came with our new house. Having lived without a dishwasher for 8 years, I am a little bit obsessed with it. What a magical, magical appliance.
Now I’m just rooting for all our other warranty-covered things to die this year. C’monnnn, hot water heater!

I had the option to purchase that same grouping this summer, apparently Fridgedair is selling off their appliances for some reason. Anyway, I was just looking for a new dishwasher, the rest of my appliances are fine for now. The installer who delivered my dishwasher, GE by the way, said that he has had MULTIPLE service calls out to people who bought the newer Frigedair dishwasher and there were parts breaking and pumps going and all kinds of issues. Wish I would have known you were in the market I would have passed this on to you before hand. He didn’t have anything to say about the rest of the appliances, but the dishwashers he was not happy with. He does appliance repair and install. Good luck to you, I hope you ended up with one that does not break and I am jealous that you are working on your kitchen. I have been waiting for 5 years for mine. ;)

So sorry! There’s not any way to do that retroactively (we have over 2000 posts that we’d have to edit by hand), but the search bar on our sidebar is pretty good! If you’re looking for a post about refinishing a veneer dresser, just search “veneer dresser” and it should be the first thing to come up. You can also check out our Projects page (which has every single project we’ve done over all four years labeled and linked in related categories so it’s hopefully easy to find! Oh and you can also use Pinterest now! Just pin anything you’d like to later reference and the specific link to that post will be saved on your Pinterest board. Hope it helps!

Was there a reason you went with the full french door refrigerator? (aside from being used to them, I guess you had them in this house and the last one….) I’ve just found them to be not a great use of cooling space (given the insulating section between the fridge and freezer, some pizza boxes don’t fit easily, etc). plus I know they are not as efficient, and I know you guys like to go green when possible. Just curious! When we recently did our kitchen, we went with bottom freezer, partly because they were greener – but also I grew up with one! :)
YoungHouseLove says
We chatted about that a while back in the comments. It just came down to finding something that fit the space and the budget (many french door ones were bigger and more moolah) and we also like reaching often accessed items in the freezer at eye height instead of bending. We appreciate the shelves for organizing freezes things too (the drawer at the bottom felt sort of like a meat locker to us without many shelves in a french door one that we checked out). Oh and we worried Clara would pull open a lower drawer (and possibly put keys or the dog in there, haha) so we like having handles out of reach. Thankfully ours is about as green as it gets (it’s extremely energy efficient, ringing in at just a few bucks a month to run 24/7 with a nice high Energy Star rating).

I get the feeling from your post that over there in the States you guys leave the movable appliances in each house? Ie, over here in Australia, we take our fridge and microwave with us when we move.
Is that normal over there, or was the fridge the only thing you kept from the last house? (As I noticed that a lot of American microwaves are built in to the kitchen)
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yeah, I’d say it’s really common to “convey” your washer/dryer and all kitchen appliances with the sale of your house (which means you leave them and they’re included in the price). They helped us sell our last house since they were so nice and new looking! Haha.

Just curious what dishwasher detergent you will use with your new dishwasher. Since they have made the changes to dishwasher detergent my dishes and pans seem to have a white powdery film on them???? Some of my friends have said the same thing. Any other suggestions would be great. Also how do you find out about the state tax break?? I wasn’t sure where to find that.
Thanks

Maybe try googling for your state’s name and the words “energy star tax free weekend”? As for detergent, we have used Seventh Generation Free & Clear (it’s liquid) for the last few years and love it. Method also makes cool little tablets that we have tried for fun.

Just a little FYI for when you appliances get delivered. I have the exact same suite of appliances and our fridge doors were installed slightly off. The gap at the top was a little narrower than the gap at the bottom. We didn’t notice it when we got them, but it caused the freezer door to pop open just slightly if the fridge door closed hard. I guess a little puff of air had no where to go and opened the freezer. If left unnoticed the fridge and freezer temps would start climbing and that is never good. Other than that one weird thing they’ve been great!

Thanks for the tip! We’ll keep an eye out for that!

i love it! i love stainless steel, but our new (well, new to us) home came with black appliances that are all in good working order and i just can’t justify replacing them :(
yet. maybe some day.
so listen to this. i painted the backs of my bathroom cabinet doors, just as a trial run for my kitchen. i want to do the kitchen white but i’m TERRIFIED.
i had a professional painter in for another room and he said that my cabinets are solid cedar, varnished.
okay, good enough.
so, i sanded/roughed up the varnish, as recommended by my favorite ben moore paint lady. then i used two thin coats of zinnser 123 bullseye primer, followed by three thin coats of instl-x cabinet coat sold by ben moore. i now have beautiful bright white cabinets…however…i can still see the wood ‘grain’. is this normal? the paint coverage is nice, bright, white, perfect. but i can still see the ‘grooves’ and striations aka the cedar’s character.
is this normal, or should i be able to somehow cover it up so it looks as smooth as a baby’s bum (or thermafoil cabinets, haha).
i’m really starting to wonder if perhaps i’m just stuck having to look at the wood grooves/grain, and might just have to deal with it.
if you get a chance, check out my most recent post with pictures – you’ll see exactly what i mean.
also, i’m so glad to see someone else saving up pennies before making purchases. i’ve been trying very hard to put ‘spending money’ in a separate account, free money that i can spend on small projects, and so far so good, i don’t seem to be blowing money we don’t have.
YoungHouseLove says
Yup, that’s absolutely normal, especially if you’re painting oak (which isn’t as smooth as maple). If you use a self leveling paint (like Benjamin Moore’s Advance) it might cut down on that. Especially if you lay the doors down and paint them laying down when it comes to your kitchen! A lot of times the grain seems really obvious but when you step back and look at the whole kitchen it still reads and gorgeous and white (especially when you add hardware and new appliances and some accessories, so you’re not just staring at the cabinets in a vacuum). Hope it helps!

you know, you are totally right. i spoke to a friend of mine who is an interior decorator and she said some woods like cedar, pine and oak are difficult to cover, to the point where you may not be able to cover them AT ALL. she said, aren’t you trying to go with a weathered, worn, and antique look throughout your home? and i said, yes. and she said, well then frig, this is exactly what you want! & suddenly it hit home…thermafoil type cupboards would just not look right with the look i’m going for.

We just got a new-to-us range for free! It’s maybe five years old and beats the crap out of our 33 year old one we did have. After we got it, we realized our range hood is way too long (the old range was a 40-incher) so I stopped by our ReStore and amazingly enough found a hood that color and brand matched our “new” range for only $55! Woohoo! Our fridge we bought from a neighbor (it was his weekend home so it was barely used) for $350 and it’s a huge stainless steel GE Profile that was in perfect shape with the exception of a wine stain on the inside…we were even able to get rid of our old one for $50 so really we were only out $300 on a fridge that retailed for well over $1000. The only appliance we haven’t replaced in the past year is our dishwasher, and I have a sneaking suspicion it’s plotting against us. But since we’ve replaced everything else for so little, I think we could swing a swanky (are dishwashers swanky?) new one when it finally goes out.

You inspired me to buy the dishwasher I’ve needed. Lowe’s has it and with the 15% off. The Lowe’s site was down or not working for me. I emailed them and called back . . . I had the whole order placed, but they won’t allow me to stack the additional 5% off.
That extra 5% was making me bite . . . every penny counts with my renno.
Do you have do anything special to get them to stack the discount?
YoungHouseLove says
The extra 5% off is by using your Lowe’s card! They should automatically enter that and it should come out when they print out your receipt. Maybe you have to do it in stores? You definitely have to have a Lowe’s card though (you have to open one if you don’t have one).

I have that stove and dishwasher. We bought all new appliances this year when Lowes was doing their tax refund promotion (where customer’s purchased a gift card and Lowes added 10% to the card). I really like them both! The “quick boil” feature is not very quick to me though. No complaints!

Love it! So glad to hear.

Yay!! I’m so excited you guys are going to start the kitchen! And, I have that dishwasher and oven. You’ll love them. The dishwasher is easy to load – it doesn’t have those wonky racks that some of them have now. I checked to see if it was easy to load before I bought it last year – I was “that girl” who took a box of dishes into Lowe’s and loaded it to make sure everything fit!

Haha- I love that. Seriously. I’m picturing you in my head and smiling. Adorable.

Congratulations on your appliance haul! Wanted to mention that sometimes your electric company/co-op also offers a deal on energy star. We got back $175 from our electric co-op for our new energy star appliances we got last summer when we bought our house. Washington, where we live, also offered rebates on any appliance that replaced a non-energy star appliance. You can save a bunch with all the programs that are out there. Anxious to see how your kitchen progresses.

I’m REALLY hoping your next kitchen project will be cabinet paiting ;) Would like to tackle this in my kitchen soon, but looking forward to your words of wisdom and advice!
YoungHouseLove says
We’ve actually already done that in our first house so here’s that post for ya: https://www.younghouselove.com/2008/11/how-to-paint-your-kitchen-cabinets/
Of course we’ll be tackling our cabinets eventually (although it might be towards the end because we don’t want to paint them and then scrape them while installing counters or flooring!). Can’t wait!

How come I get as excited and enchanted about a (someone else’s) kitchen redo-appliances, floor, floorplan, fireplace!, pantry- as I get for a new pair of shoes at the beginning of October, or for a pretty swimming suit in June? Can’t wait to see what you’ve got for us!
