We bought nearly $3,800 worth of kitchen appliances this weekend. But if you know anything about us, you know we love a deal. So here’s how we managed to shave off about $1,400 from that total (we ended up paying 63% of their original cost). Yee haw!
Before I dive into the heavy math, let’s cover some basic questions first. Why new appliances? We’ll make this one multiple choice:
- A: We prefer stainless steel over the current bisque / black mix we’ve got going on.
- B: The wall oven has a big burn mark up the front of it and cooks/burns things unevenly.
- C: Our refrigerator is slowly dying (the ice maker doesn’t work and ever since Hurricane Irene it has been cooling unevenly – icy milk anyone?).
- D: All of the above.
If you answered D, you’ve either been paying close attention or just know that “All of the above” is usually a solid answer. We knew about these “issues” when we bought the house (except C) so we went into this house purchase knowing we’d need to replace our appliances during a future kitchen makeover. So we’ve been saving our pennies for the last 10 months (many folks wondered why we didn’t just dive into a kitchen makeover as soon as we moved, but we like to really think about how we’ll use a room – and we also gotta save up before big purchases like these). Even before landing on our peninsula plan a few weeks ago, we’ve been researching replacements and waiting for the best deal and the right appliances for us. So for the past few months we’ve been:
- keeping an eye on craigslist for discounted applainces that might work
- hitting up secondhand stores & thrift stores (like the ReStore)
- visiting our local Sears “Scratch & Dent” store
Sadly, none of those “discount” routes were panning out (nothing on craigslist had the right dimensions or matched, secondhand stores weren’t selling much more than a few old black or white microwaves and dishwashers, and even the scratch & dent store was selling things at pretty comparable prices to new appliances from Lowe’s or Home Depot since most things are on sale around this time of the year whether they’re scratched or dented or not). Then we got a sign from the Lowe’s website that this was the weekend to pounce:
Well, actually a few signs. Lowe’s is our favorite spot to buy appliances since their prices tend to be the lowest we’ve found and they’ll price match. It’s actually where we bought all of the appliances for our first house which we used and loved for the entire 4.5 years that we lived there. So seeing their website loaded with discounts was enough to get our butts in gear and make some decisions.
One easy decision was the brand of appliance that we preferred. We lived very happily with a kitchen full of Frigidaires in our last house, so 4.5 satisfied years made us more comfortable with that company than any review could (in almost 5 years of use none of them ever needed to be serviced and still looked mint when we moved). Plus, we wanted to buy all the same brand so the stainless color was consistent from appliance to appliance (some stainless fronts are more brushed than others and can look kind of cobbled together if they’re not consistent). In an icing-on-the-cake scenario, we actually ended up getting Frigidaire Gallery models that have a protective coating atop the stainless steel to prevent fingerprints (something we really wanted since we were always wiping down our last ones). So go ahead Clara, do your worst. But before we learned about the fingerprint-proof stainless covering, first it came down to picking out the most functional, fitting, and affordable models for our kitchen. Here’s what we ended up with:
- A 22.6 Cu. Ft. Energy Star Counter-Depth Side-by-Side Refrigerator: We learned that our current fridge is actually counter depth, so we definitely couldn’t get a standard depth, which would jut even further into the room. This new one is actually more spacious than our current one and the one at our last house (so we’re psyched to gain more space without giving up the counter-depth dream), but that’s a story for another day. More on that soon.
- An Electric Convection Stove (with Quick-Boil feature): We currently have a convection wall oven and countertop range… but those are extremely expensive to replace, so we’re going to convert our kitchen to a standard stove situation. Again, that’s a story for another day (soon!). Oh but the added convection and quick-boil features are something we happily would have paid an extra $100-200 for on top of a basic range price, but thanks to sale prices it was just $10 more than a similar model without those features.
- A Microwave: Nothing interesting to say about this one other than it’s very similar to the last one we had and loved.
- An Energy Star Dishwasher: Yay. Our first house didn’t have a dishwasher until we added one and it changed our life. And we love that it’s Energy Star like the fridge.
Even after almost a year of saving for this investment, the prices above are more than a little scary to two cheapskates like us. Thankfully each appliance was already marked down in the store (maybe October is a good markdown month?). The greatest markdown was the fridge (down $500!). The salesman said the price flip flops between $1799 and $1299 and we just caught it at the right time. On top of that, we also caught this at the right time:
The fridge and dishwasher were both Energy Star so that knocked those prices down another 15% (sadly cooking appliances like stoves & microwaves typically aren’t Energy Star rated). Happily the stove got the 10% off treatment thanks to the advertised sale that we happened to spot on their website. But the microwave, who was already on sale for $269, didn’t qualify (poor guy – things had to be $397 or more).
But all four of them earned this next discount:
We’ve had a Lowe’s card for a while (back from an appliance purchase in our last house, actually) so we scored our usual 5% off on our total purchase price. Down came those already discounted prices (we love that they allowed them to “stack”).
Then on top of that…
…Virginia was having a tax-free weekend on Energy Star appliances, effectively taking another 5% off the fridge and dishwasher (since tax here is 5%)! So that’s how our grand total ended up being about 63% of what it would’ve cost originally. A total savings of $1,392. Which essentially means we got the stove and the microwave for free (their original prices add up to $1,248 before all the discounts). The best part is that many of the counter depth fridges that we looked at were more than $2,500 on their own, so we’re stunned that we got all of our appliances for less. Take that baby to the market!
They still have to be delivered (for free, as always at Lowe’s) which is why this post has no pictures of the new items in place- but we’ll definitely share pics when they come. Oh and for anyone wondering, we’ll be donating our old appliances to the ReStore since they do free pick-ups (although we might craigslist the cooktop and microwave since they’re in newer condition). We’ve had a productive weekend in the kitchen, so there are a few other ideas/decisions/changes to share. So hopefully we’ll be back with lots of kitchen happenings over the next few days! We’re still only about 2% there, but the ball is officially rolling!
Okay, so who else saved some moolah this weekend? Er, well, spent some moolah but not as much moolah as they might’ve originally spent? Ack, you know what I mean. Oh and to any fellow Virginians, all of the sale prices that we took advantage of should be valid through the end of today (the tax free thing along with the 15 & 10% off sales and 5% off any Lowe’s card purchase). Just throwing that out there in case it helps!
Psst- Anyone replacing old appliances with Energy Star ones might also be eligible for government refunds (of over $100 if you’re replacing your dishwasher & fridge) so you can go here and click the button with the map on it to see what they’re giving back in your state.

Hi! I’ve been following you guys for a year now but first ever comment! I absolutely cannot wait for your kitchen makeover! I love the peninsula idea and am head over heels for your flooring choice! You guys must be so excited too to get those cabinets painted and those appliances installed! looking forward to future posts!

Is that Frigidaire Gallery appliances I see!? Well if it is, then we are appliance twins because I got that same set 2 years ago. I love love love them! My dishwasher is silently, oh so silently, getting my dishes sparkling as I type. You will love this set. My only suggestion: Turn the blasted beeper off on the microwave because it is super annoying!!

Haha- thanks for the tip! Love hearing from so many people who are enjoying their Frigidaires!

oh yeah, I just realized I can use the quick clean setting on the dishwasher every time. Only if you have super dirty caked-on mess on a dish will you need the normal or heavy wash settings.

Thanks SO MUCH for this post! We close on our first house (!) Wednesday morning and we still needed a fridge and washer/dryer. I read this and ran straight to Lowes :) We ended up buying the same counter-depth fridge as you guys (since we have an island that impinges a little on the fridge area and we didn’t want bumpage issues) and found a great deal on the w/d too! We just squeaked in before the end of the sale (as in: got signed up for the credit card and out the door 2 minutes before closing). Thanks for helping us save a bundle!!!

Awesome finds! When my husband and I were moving into our new place, we needed a washer, dryer and fridge. The desired washer and dryer were about $900 each, which was way too steep. After a lot of searching, my bargain finding savvy husband, found an in store deal for the same washer/dryer for about $550 each, but the store was far away and driving there would diminish the bargain. So we took our chances and after about 3-4 store, Sears finally agreed but said only the manager can call the other store to price match since it was an in store sale, not online. The next day I called Sears to find out when the manager was working, both hubby and I left work early, sped to Sears before the manager took off for the day and FINALLY got our machines for $500 each. We also threw in a fridge that was originally $2400, for $1200. The whole time we were running around I thought to myself, “this better be worth it!!” And it so was!!!! I know it’s a long story, but a good bargain is always worth the extra effort. Congrats on the new purchase!

Oh this is killing me…a couple hours before reading your blog I bought $3200 worth of appliances from a local appliance store. Now doing a bit of research on Lowes.com I realize I could have saved at least $200! Now that’s no where near what you saved but it would have paid for a new toilet I also need. However, since I bought from a local company and this is my first time to purchase appliances, I’ll have to forgive myself. We live and we learn, right?! I do love what I learn from your experiences!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes! Just live and learn! We often learn afterwards that we could have saved money by doing something differently, but we try to remind ourselves we did the best we can- and there’s always next time!

Whoa! So…often times when I read your blog I feel like I’m reading my own…but this is exceptionally creepy. I totally bought the same exact dishwasher this Friday. Same as yours! Strange! And I also scored a ridiculous deal…only $349 for the dishwasher (on sale at our local appliance store here in Bangor, ME) PLUS a FREE $50 Visa gift card with the purchase! Don’t you love deals! So excited for you guys…enjoy your new appliances!!!

Wow, that’s some amazing deals you guys got! Way to shop it at the right time. That’s awesome. Hopefully you guys will pay that credit card amount down right away though otherwise you’ll be paying in interest!
The only reason I say that is because we’ve bought stuff on our Home Depot card and we were just being really stupid at the time because we had no means to pay it back. So, we’re still paying on it and any discounts we did get because of using it are long gone by now. lol
YoungHouseLove says
Yup, we saved up so we could pay it off. In general we don’t like to buy stuff that we don’t already have money in the bank to cover. More on that here (our dads were extremely firm about us paying off cards so we must have gotten it from them).

Wow,
You guys have great timing on this post. My wife and I just bought almost those exact appliances from Lowes this weekend (in addition to new cabinets, coutertops, the works). We almost made the purchase last week, but the nice salesperson informed us of the Energy Star discount and the 18 months 0% interest for opening a Lowes card, which was only in place last weekend. So we made the big purchase Saturday and saved a big chunk of money.
Good to know you guys like Frigidaire too. Now all we have to do is rip out our old kitchen and install the new one!

Good luck Jason! Send pics!

We purchased the same appliances! with the exception of the fridge (that wouldn’t fit in our kitchen). We had purchased a Bosch package at our last house that I wasn’t too found of. I love these but my husband said that the dishwasher was a nightmare to install BUT, since you are putting in new cabinets and counters hopefully you won’t have that problem!
I think you made a great choice! ;-)

WOW! Okay..so I stumbled upon your blog…and ive been reading for a month or so now. I am finding out that we are SUPER similar in ways…and I have the perfect example. We are re-doing our kitchen…and we went this weekend to purchase our appliances…(which we wanted frigidaire because we also(like you) used them in our last house..for 5 yrs and had NO problems.) We decided on the Gallery series…and we purchased some of the VERY same applainces you did! We didnt go to lowes…we decided to support our small town local sears store…but we got MAJOR deals too!
So now you know why im shocked to open your blog this morning to see your post on appliances!! TOO FUNNY! P.S. We LOVE scratch and dent too…so we scored our frig from a S&D place…for 899$…. and the dent is on the back side…so you’ll never see it. AHHH i just love a good deal!
Keep up your blogging…your doing a great job! I love to read it in between naps..diaper changes, and flipping our house! :) God Bless you both!

Our purchase wasn’t recent, back in May, but I’m still so happy with it. We were using a futon as a couch and it was really starting to hurt my back so we decided it was time to be grown-ups and buy a real couch. Only problem was our apartment is very difficult to get furniture into it. So we needed to find something that could either come apart or manuvered around the tight hallways and doors. We went to IKEA and found a loveseat that was perfect. It was our first trip so we decided to walk the whole place before making the purchase. Ended up finding the same loveseat in the discount section. The only problems we could see was it wasn’t boxed and had no cover. With even buying the cover seperately we ended up saving around $150!

Oh man, we totally have Frigidaire gallery appliances that we bought when we updated our tiny bungalow kitchen about a year and a half ago! In fact, I think all our appliances are the exact same as the ones you chose, except for the stove. I LOVE the finish- it’s a bit more of a “matte” stainless steel and you can kind of see the horizontal texture in it. Totally resilient against fingerprints, and definitely allows magnets to stick! I just wanted to warn you that we’re on the phone right now with Frigidaire about our new stainless steel fridge.
It has rust spots all over after 6 months and they are not willing to help us at all! They say that the warranty doesn’t cover it. After doing some research on this issue, I see that we’re not alone.
I hope you have better luck with yours!
*we have a gallery stove too and love it and it is not rusting at all, hopefully its a faulty door and we can get it all figured out quickly.

We bought frigidaire gallery appliances 2 years ago when we bought our current home, touchable stainless? How could I say no with a 2 yo, AND 3 yo running around? Even if it cost more, I imaging I’ve already saved the difference in cleaning supplies. :) Plus, how cool is it that the fridge and freezer lights fade on?
Good luck with delivery, or is it break a leg?

I am a little late commenting here – because I have spent lots of time doing dishes and laundry this week. We also went and bought new appliances this weekend! And oddly enough – we now seem to have matching kitchens!! LOL We now have the stove, dishwasher, and fridge – and have since decided we want the microwave so next time that baby is on sale we are going for it. And then we also bought the Whirlpool Duet washer and dryer. So with all of the items on sale and the 10 – 15% off we also get a 10% military discount so we felt GREAT about our purchases!

the frigidaire gallery appliances are SO pretty! we bought the matching gas convection range and french door fridge last year (got a bosch d/w cuz of the frigidaire’s reviews)…. i LVOED the look of them in my newly renovated kitchen… the only problem was the fridge would not keep anything cold! since the fridge has been a new model at the time there were not reviews… not so anymore… actually on any of their fridges! after 3 replacements we were ready to try a different frigidaire model… only to find out pretty much all of them have lack of cooling issues!! so sadly…. we ended up exchanging both the range and fridge to a matching set from another brand!
good luck with yours! :o)

Literally bought all the same (except gas range, not electric) appliances from an online discounter for some major savings a few months ago. We love them. The fridge is totally magnetic, the stainless really doesn’t show prints, and the dishwasher is nice and quiet. The microwave is great but heats up a little when you have the stove going, so just be sure to test the handle before grabbing it if you have the burners on! Plus our electric bill has been SUPER low. We’re still waiting on our energy star rebate checks from DC government but the purchases were definitely worth it!

There is also a manufacturer rebate section on the Lowe’s website where you can earn tiered discounts depending on how many appliances of a specific brand you purchase. We paired those savings with a Labor Day sale just like the Columbus sale, and a $50 off purchases $500 or more coupon they mail us all the time and it was a sweet deal. Lowes also has a specific day of the week they put their scratch/dent and old floor models out, and we got a great savings on our fridge that way.
Erin says
Hi there, I just bought the same fridge today (for $899! I didn’t realize it was the same one until I came back to this post to see if you had addressed my question). I am having the fridge delivered after Thanksgiving and I apologize if you answered this question already in the comments, but when the fridge was delivered, did you just transfer the food from your current fridge to it? I’m trying not to lose all my food when I get the new fridge, but I’m not sure about the best plan of attack, any tips? I’ve heard refrigerators are supposed to sit for a while before you cool them so I’m not sure what to do.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, we just waited until they came with it and told them we had stuff in our current fridge so after they brought it in and plugged it in (to be sure it worked before we transferred everything) we just moved stuff over. Only took about five to ten minutes. Never heard the thing about sitting for a while before cooling (we did the same thing to our first Frigidaire fridge that we had at our first house and it worked well for five years until we moved so it didn’t seem to be a problem). Hope it helps!

I’m actually a little disappointed in this post, and I never usually feel this way when reading your blog. But when something seems to be too good to be true, it usually is. I live here in Richmond, spent 3 hours in Lowe’s today and these numbers are not quite the same. I was able to score major discounts, had a 10% off coupon, in addition to 10% off from the store, and the numbers are still higher. The most glaring difference is that no Lowe’s store will allow you to stack coupons/discounts so it was impossible for me to use my 10% coupon in addition to the 5% off from the Lowe’s credit card.
In addition, you have to purchase a cord for your oven (i bought your same oven). What about installation costs for your dishwasher and microwave, even if you ended up not installing the original microwave?
I bought the same Frigidaire Gallery appliances and I think even with your discounts, and being tax free, this is over estimating the amount you saved. I did not pay tax on two of my appliances since they rang up as installation sales vs. retail sales. At any rate, I wonder if other discounts/good deals are as good as you portray them to be? I’m not being snarky, I love your site. It just makes me wonder now.
YoungHouseLove says
Hi Liz,
So sorry you weren’t able to get the discounts you were hoping for. My guess is that promotions going on now are different than they were 3 months ago. Our Lowe’s had no trouble combining their Energy Star discounts, the state’s tax free weekend, and our usual credit card 5% off (we didn’t use any coupons – they were all in-store promotions, so maybe that’s the difference?). We even mentioned the salesperson’s name (Jimmy!) and the location is the Lowe’s on Koger Center. Jimmy said some of the appliances flip flop prices, so maybe you just caught ’em at a higher point? We weren’t exaggerating (wouldn’t have anything to gain from that – especially since readers would have called us on it in October). We didn’t pay Lowe’s to install anything because we’re doing that ourselves (dishwasher included). Hope it helps!
-John
Liz says
Yes, that helps and thank you for the clarification! I’m certain I was feeling a little disappointed in not being able to use all coupons and discount offers and it reflected in my post. It has been almost a year since this post, may I ask how the first year with these appliances has gone?
We woke up today to a fridge that is beyond failing (it’s currently 50 degrees in our fridge, the freezer side is still really cold though). Everything I have read tells me not to bother calling a repair man since it will probably cost $500+ to repair.
The fridge you purchased is currently on sale at Lowe’s & Home Depot. We wanted to purchase new matching appliances at some point (when the money tree allows us to do a small kitchen remodel) so it would be nice to know if all the matching appliances in your kitchen receive your stamp of approval.

Also, how are your appliances holding up to toddler fingerprints?
YoungHouseLove says
Still love them all. No issues at all. Off to knock on wood…

“So go ahead Clara, do your worst. But before we learned about the fingerproof-proof stainless covering…”
I know this is WAY after the fact, but did you mean to type fingerproof-proof or fingerprint-proof? :)
Hope you’re still loving these guys!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, we meant fingerprint proof! And yes, we still love them! Whew.

if you purchase appliances for your new house you should check out appliancesconnection.com. Tax-free, free delivery and a lot less expensive than home depot or lowes. On memorial day my husband and i purchased an LG french door fridge, electric range, and front load washer and dryer for around $4,300 (which includes 3 year warranties on everything.)
i’m so excited to see the progress on your new home!!!
