You know we like to make ornaments (there’s a nice collection of others that we’ve whipped up over the years at the end of this post) so we’re just dropping by to share the ones we made this year. You know, for any other jonesing-to-eat-all-the-cookies-and-make-all-the-ornaments folks out there. And these might go down as the easiest grandparent gifts ever (masterpieces by their favorite little ones + a sweet and personal ornament = grandparent gift jackpot). They’re so cute you’ll definitely want to make some for your own tree while you’re at it. Plus they only cost around a dollar or two (and take ten minutes or so) to make, which is definitely key when Christmas is less than a
#29: An Unexpected Con To Calling In A Pro
Happy Holidays everyone! We got you a little something to celebrate. It’s the show notes for Episode #29 of Young House Love Has A Podcast. On this week’s episode we talked about hiring out renovation work in your home. Specifically, that it can be exciting and awesome.. and sometimes it can be deflating and frustrating… which was the case recently for us. So we’re sharing some red flags to look out for and some tips to try to avoid that issue along with a few more ways that we’ve cut down on holiday stress (and gift excess). Plus we dive into our favorite design books, dig up John’s old journal, and enjoy some holiday tunes from a very special
Making A Painted Christmas House Village
You guys know I like ceramic things. And miniature anything is 100% cuter than something that’s normal-sized (little sliders vs cheeseburgers for example). So it was only a matter of time before this happened. Let’s make a little Christmas village, shall we? It all started with some secondhand tea light holders that are meant to glow if you put little candles inside (some just have tiny holes for a string of lights to poke through instead). I’ve always stopped to stare at these things at thrift stores, because how much fun does it sound to repaint the old tired and chipped ones and bring them back to life in the form of a happy little Christmas town?! This past weekend I was trolling
Holiday House Tour – Come In And See Our Christmas Tree
If we’re in the car driving around at night and we see a house or a yard all decorated with Christmas lights, there’s one guarantee, and that is that a tiny 2 year old voice will shout “It’s Christmastime!” from the back seat. Yup, it’s hilarious. And it can happen fifteen times within the course of a minute. And we still laugh and cheer every time. Christmas is in fact upon us. And as someone who resists the urge to drag the decorations out for a while and then finally gets the bug and CAN’T FREAKING WAIT, well, that happened yet again, and the house transitioned from “waiting to exhale be festive” to “so ridicccccculously festive” in
#28: Why Can’t We Pick A Dang Paint Color?
Brrrr, it’s cold outside, so why not snuggle up under a blanket with the show notes for Episode #28 of Young House Love Has A Podcast? And one more question: who has 7 kids, a gorgeous Brazilian vacation house, and is on this week’s podcast?! It’s the Novogratz, of course! And on this week’s episode, Robert and Cortney talk to us about creating the perfect guest experience in your home, as well as designing around a big household with a wide range of kids. Plus, we are CRAZY STUMPED about an upcoming paint color choice. Like, 14 test swatches in… and still no decision. Also, we take a stand against an ongoing computer rebellion in our house, we look
House Stuff That’s Super On Sale Right Now
Ok, so this spur of the moment Friday post is all thanks to a gal named Kari on Instagram who messaged me and said “40% off capiz lamps at West Elm. Just saying’!” And, well, you know the rest. I lost my mind. And I bought a giant gorgeous chandelier that I can’t wait to lay in bed next to hang over our bed, and I almost bought a dozen other things (there were like 14 things in my cart at one point until John reined me in). And thus, this post full of deeply discounted house stuff was born. I didn’t make any fancy mood boards, just dumped a bunch of pics and links here. And as for what I
Behind The Scenes: Making A Coloring Book
Our coloring book has been out a couple of months now, and I realized we haven’t really talked about how it got made. I can’t say we ever really thought about how a coloring book is made, so finding ourselves in the middle of doing one was quite the surprise. In case you missed our previous mentions, Color at Home is an 80-page coloring book for adults, filled with everything from full room drawings, decorated vignettes, design mood boards, frameable art prints, and collections of things like pillows, chairs, and lighting. It’s $12.99, but places like Amazon have it for under $10 now (stocking stuffer alert!). We’ve got some peeks at it throughout this post, but you can
Beach House Video Tour & Floor Planning
Thanks so much for all the sweet and excited comments over on IG & FB about our needs-lots-of-love beach house project (for anyone who’s like whaaaa??, here’s that post to get you up to speed). As promised, we’re back with the rundown on the floor plan, and what we’re currently thinking we’re going to do with it. Warning: we’ve been known to change our minds – so this is just the plan thus far. This house is like a giant iceberg that floated into our lives, and we are just at the tippy top of the thing, waddling around like excited penguins. But before we throw a bunch of floor plans your way, how about we
#27: Finding Focus When You Just Wanna Renovate All The Things
December is here and so are the show notes for Episode #27 of Young House Love Has A Podcast. On this week’s episode we talk about pacing yourself through your home renovations, so your eagerness to make changes doesn’t get you in deeper than your budget, time, or ability allows. We also list a few places to start, and how to redirect yourself if you’re pondering a project that might be better left for later. Plus, John shares one of his weirder DIY battle wounds to date (thanks to our new beach house) and Sherry talks about a few new twists on our holiday decor. We also share our favorite stocking stuffers for DIY or decor lovers,
We Bought A House!
But don’t worry – we’re not moving into this one. As we shared on this week’s podcast, we recently purchased a beach house (!!!). But it’s not the fancy, high roller version that the term “beach house” tends to evoke. Nope, this one’s nearly 100 years old and can best be described as the roughest, most in-need-of-help house that we’ve ever purchased, and it’s already proving to be one of our most challenging projects. (If you’d rather hear us gush about it informally, you can just press play below – and you can click here to learn how to subscribe for free.) We’re in love with the potential and charm of this old home and its awesome
#26: Are You Sitting Down? We’ve Got Big News!
Why hello. You probably just want me to bypass the pleasantries so you can get right to the show notes for Episode #26 of Young House Love Has A Podcast, so… ok then. In this week’s episode we’ve got something pretty major that we couldn’t wait to share with you (Sherry almost can’t contain herself). We’re also chatting with designer Brian Patrick Flynn, the man behind several of HGTV’s Dream Homes whose work has also graced the pages of Domino and Country Living. Plus, with holiday hosting around the corner, we’re taking a look at what house guests really notice when they stay with you – and we’re sharing our love for the world’s newest
