As we mentioned here, the bedroom is “still looking rough and we’re not sure about a lot of things – just waiting for inspiration to strike – which might involve repainting and rearranging furniture along with refinishing the floors”). We even elaborated a bit in the comments when folks started asking what we meant by that or if we hated the current color by saying: “We love the paint color but something is off about the bedroom and we’re not sure we can rule anything out – including the paint color. Everything is a suspect until proven innocent. Haha. Something is limiting us, so we’re not opposed to changing that thing once we pin it down (it might be the curtains or the art or something else!) just to get things to “click” for us. Who knows where we’ll end up!”
You can relate to that feeling, right? The whole something’s-off-but-I’m-not-sure-what-it-is thing? Moving the art together above the bed on Friday was a start, but we actually have a bunch of changes on the agenda for this week in the hopes of cracking the case and making “that room where we sleep” feel a little more like “that room that we love!” Of course we know that a big ol’ transformation doesn’t happen overnight, but we also have seen firsthand how a few updates and switcheroos can go a long way in remedying that “hmmmm, something’s just not right” feeling that has probably popped up at least three dozen times in our last five years of DIYing. So we know it well.
We’ve learned that the only real way to get any closer to something that feels right is just to play around and see what you like and what you don’t. The ol’ trial and error approach. Because if you’re sitting there frozen in fear or over-thinking things to the point that you’ve lost all momentum it can get sticky. So without further ado, let’s get into the first tweak, which has already taken place. And it’s kind of a biggie. It all started when we saw the rug on the bottom of this picture at an outlet liquidation sale…
We weren’t looking for a bedroom rug, although we weren’t ruling out the idea of changing anything in that room (because remember, everything in there was guilty until proven innocent- haha). I had actually said to John “the jute rug in the bedroom could always move out to the dining room since we’re planning on getting a natural fiber rug in there for under the table and it’s definitely big enough” – so I guess you could say we were open to anything. So when there was a big tent sale at our favorite lighting outlet (The Decorating Outlet), which also happens to sell rugs (it’s where we got the thick wool rug in Clara’s bedroom along with her blue capiz chandelier and the big glass pendants in our kitchen), we had to check it out.
And that’s when we saw the patterned blue rug in the picture above this one. And it was all over.
We love all of those colors (gray, navy, teal, white!) and the geometric pattern was totally calling our name. By now you know we’re suckers for a geometric rug, right?
They just do something to us. They make us feel alive. Oh yes, we live dangerously.
But back to reality. Since it was a thick 9 x 12 wool rug, we were nervous that even on sale it would be $700 or more, which is sadly way out of our price range. But when we checked out the tag, we almost couldn’t believe our eyes. Did that really say “was $1287.00, now: $250” ?????!!!!!
That’s not 40 or 50% off – that’s over 80% off! So we asked the guy what was wrong with it to make it so cheap, since the tag said “soiled” as the reason for the discount. We hoped if it had a stain we might be able to hide that part of the rug under the bed or try to remove it with some crazy scrubbing ritual, but he actually told us it was ripped. As in, there was a hole right through it. Eeks. But thankfully the placement of the rip was in a corner, and although it looked like this if you picked it up and put your fingers through it…
… it looked like this when it was laid out on the floor. See the big gaping hole?
We didn’t either! The thick pile of the rug was so dense that the rip wasn’t even visible, let alone obvious. So you know what we did, right? We thanked our lucky stars that it was there. It was the only reason that we were able to get over $1000 off (!!!) and take home a $1287 rug for $250. We shoved that sucker into the passenger seat of the car faster than you can say “will-that-fit-in-an-Altima?” and I rode in the back with Clara, happy-squealing my way home.
To save you some scrolling, here’s a before pic of the old rug for ya again (remember we’re still missing major furnishings, like something in that nook, art on those bare walls, etc):
Next we pulled out the old rug that we’d love to relocate into the dining room under the table. We laughed at how naked that yellowed old floor looked. Someday we’ll refinish it, but until then our new rug will be in charge of de-naked-ifying things.
First John did some cute vacuuming to remove any dust/fibers leftover from the tent sale. Look how fast he is. He’s like Edward except he doesn’t sparkle in the sun or bite me for sport.
Next we shimmied it carefully under our bed. It probably took us a good twenty minutes to get it centered – just inching it back or to the side a little bit at a time.
We love it more than words can say. Although, to quote Tim Gunn, it’s a lotta look. Haha. Still missing major furnishings/art of course, but we’ll get there. So some folks might go for something less patterned or colorful for their bedroom, but we think one of the main “what’s wrong with this room” issues for us was that it didn’t feel happy or fun or “us” at all. And now it does. Oh happy day.
See how this room could almost be anyone’s bedroom?
And see how the room above it probably couldn’t be most people’s bedroom? Haha. That’s the beauty of a room that feels like you. It almost feels like it couldn’t be anyone else’s. So I’m sure there are lots of folks out there who would pass on this baby, but we decided when we moved into this house that we were going to make a playful, happy-go-lucky little love nest for our family. So we’re cool with waking up to a room that “smiles” back at us. Sort of like how we love our chipper living room and guest room (which have those other colorful geometric rugs going on):
I know, I know – things in the bedroom look a lot less polished or finished than those two rooms above. True dat. Look at that naked nook and those bare walls. But things always look crazy in the middle. Heck, sometimes things don’t really click into place until the very last tweak has been made, and I’d say we’re at least a dozen tweaks away from the final tweak (the pillows, curtains, and lamps might be the first to get some tweak-age now that there’s a new rug in town). But we’ll get there someday…
Nothing is safe when we have our tweaking hats on. Haha. But thanks to the new rug we’re invigorated and excited to play around a little more and see where we end up. So expect a few more changes throughout the week as we try our hand at a few other switcheroos and snap pics for you as we go. Some might fail, others might work- so it’s all about playing around in the name of figuring this room out a little more.
And can we talk about how plush this guy feels underfoot? Excuse me for mentioning the original price again, but have you ever walked on a $1287 rug before? We hadn’t either. It’s what we imagine the carpets in The Donald’s house might feel like. Super super plush. Like double thick. Burger even lounges on the rug now (he used to lounge exclusively in the bed, so it’s funny to see him sprawled out on the floor these days). It’s nice to know that we have the doggie stamp of approval.
What did you guys do this weekend? Any deal hunting, rug rolling out, or super fast vacuuming? John also ran his buns off at the James River Scramble (it’s sort of a rocky trail run/10K) and we loved cheering him on. We also squeezed in a stroll around the art museum (Clara loves VMFA) and dropped in on a new doughnut shop that opened. Good times. What were you guys up to?
Heidi P. says
HOLY COW!! $250 for that huge thing?! That is c-razy. The plushness totally comes through in the pictures. Game changer right there.
I finally got my post up about dyeing my towels gray. Wanna see? http://dhperezfamily.blogspot.com/2012/05/i-dyed.html

Wow, what an amazing find! I have to say that I liked the warmth that the jute rug brought to the party, but I could see how it’s not the most bedroom friendly option.
And besides, if its got the Burger stamp of approval, it HAS to be good!
Jackie says
Awesome deal on the rug! I love it.
Rachel says
I love love love a plush rug. Its kind amazing the difference.
Why did you decide to orient the rug they way you did? From the pictures it seems like it would be better shifted 90 degrees, but maybe thats just from that perspective. Is it a square rug or rectangular?
YoungHouseLove says
It’s rectangular, so it wouldn’t have worked in the room the other way (too long and not wide enough).

OMG! I LOVE it! The size of it works better in the space too. I’m jealous you guys found such an amazing deal! I’d love to have that pink and orange on in my place too!

Looks awesome! So much better now! :) we did nothing really exciting. I’m a college professor, so had to attend my students’ graduation this weekend – mid-day, black velvet robes, bright and sunny and almost 90, on an artifical turf football field, for 1.5 hours – FUN! (oh, and boring speakers :)

Aw, I hope it was a little fun! Haha.

Love the rug!!!
I think it really helps with the “furniture looks too small for the room” problem. It adds volume to the room and makes it look more on-scale.
I think putting something in the left corner (for me looking at the pics) would also help with that… maybe even just moving the mirror to opposite the door… would add balance and make the room look a little less empty.
Anyway, again, I love the rug — I’m glad you two were able to get such an awesome bargain!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, John suggested moving that mirror into that nook but I thought it would be weird to roll over at night and see my face staring back at me. Haha. We hope to get a big armoire or cabinet for that nook someday- or even make something built in there. Someday…

Holli C says
I feel like it’s the bed maybe. Have you thought about trying to find a comforter/spread with some Navy Blue in it or maybe a pop of another color in it? Maybe even spray painting the ikea frame would make a difference, the white just doesn’t seem to be working in that room (normally I LOVE white). But this is just my opinion of course :)
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, we have thought about changing basically everything, as we mentioned. Haha. So we’re just going to play around with a lot of things to see where we end up! Nothing is safe!

YoungHouseLove says
Haha, we didn’t get there yet. Picture it wadded up on the floor about 10 feet from the table. Someday we’ll get ‘er done! We actually have thought about how the sunroom is another great space for it when we finally tackle that room so who knows where it’ll end up! We’ll keep you posted!

mywallststyle says
While reading you post it hit me what in my opinion is “miss” or “off” in the room. It’s the scale. You have a big room and you have a large bed that really makes a statement. Now you have a rug that does that as well. Your nightstands are tiny in comparision. I think you should get night stands that are double the width and a tiny bit higher. Also really tall lamps on large wide nightstands would make an impressive statement. You could add bling in the form of framed rectangular mirrors that are standing on the nightstands and leaning against the wall. Also if you are planning to repaint why not make the wall behind the bed a feature wall with thick wide vertical stripes to make the place feel taller.
YoungHouseLove says
I have thought the same thing, but see that door? It will slam into any night stand on the right that’s any larger – even an inch or two. Wish we could go bigger with them though. Maybe we can swing the door so it opens the other way someday and go with bigger tables someday down the line!
xo,
s
annabelvita says
I vote feature wall but wallpapered!
Amanda says
Sherry, have you thought about moving your bed over away from the door a bit?
You could center it on the back wall (the wall the head of the bed is on) instead o the room in general.
It sounds a bit weird, but that would give the door more swinging space, and it would give you room for slightly bigger night stands.
It would also still be centered to a wall, so it probably wouldn’t feel off.
YoungHouseLove says
Then it wouldn’t be centered on the chandelier or the mirror across the room over the sink- we have tried to shimmy the bed around a lot of places, but just love it centered on the light/sink nook the best!

Love the rug. Right now it overwhelms the space-the other items don’t have the same visual weight-or it feels unbalanced. But again, I LOVE the rug. I have rug envy. I am sure once those other tweaks are made, it will be fab in there!

Oh yes, still have lots to do in there! Haha. There’s not nearly enough furniture or art around the room to make sense of things yet- but someday…

I love the new rug! That is an amazing deal. I just love it when I find a good deal but I don’t think I’ve ever found one that good. I like that the new rug is darker and fills the floor space better then the other one. What kind of plans do you have for the corner opposite of the door?
Saturday we went to a Gala to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the local hospital(We got to feel fancy and rich for the night even though we were probably one of the poorest people in the room). :) Sunday we went to my cousin-in-laws college graduation.

That rug is gorgeous. I almost let out an audible “oooh” when I got to the after pic – the only thing that held me back was my husband trying to get to sleep next to me!
It’s not quite the same, but I bought some really cute work shoes online tonight (from one of my favourite brands), and googled to find a code for $15 off. I never would have thought to do that before reading your blog!

I’m much too reserved for that rug in my house but it does look great! Gotta love that discount too! I think it was meant to be.
One question (and I hope no one has asked in the past), do you ever use rug pads? I buy only natural rugs as well and I’ve just read that in order to allow them to “breathe” and to extend their life, past the 100 or so years that they’ll last :-), you should use a pad. Just wondering what your thoughts are on rug pads.
YoungHouseLove says
We use them when we have a thin rug that seems to move around (like the one in our living room, which is a dhurrie) but in cases like the bedroom and guest room where a thick rug is held in place by the bed we haven’t needed them. Never read that a rug pad could extend the life of a rug by letting it breathe though- will have to look into that! Although if they last 100 years without one, we might be ok. Haha.

Lynn @ SafeBeauty says
I am digging on your new rug. And I am just imagining how plush it is. Like the rug your grandma never lets anyone walk on except guests so it’s lasted for like 30 years and when you walk on it your feet still sink in a wee bit. Mama likes. And that price? I might have sat on that until we rang it up and got it into the car just so no vultures (aka old ladies with sharp elbows) could eek in there and snatch it. You can’t beat that price. If I got that it would be my dying words “One time, I got a rug that was $1200 dollars…gasp…for $200 bucks!”….aaand flatline. My weekend pales in comparison. Just tackled a few more outside windows with bleach, soap, water and a hose. Fun times…
My best, Lynn

Holy amazing rug! It really takes the room to the next level and it has a sheen that gives it a luxe feel in the pictures. I do have to say though…now the paint color is looking wrong. Have you considered a dark stormy grey/blue? The contrast with all of the white would be stunning.
YoungHouseLove says
That’s so funny! Maybe it’s your monitor? So many others have said it looks so great with the rug – as if we painted it after picking the rug. Haha. I think we all see things differently on different computer monitors though. In person, we have to agree that for now the wall color looks awesome to us with the more intense slate and turquoise. But who knows where we’ll end up!

I LOVE the rug!
Now I see some sort of “built in” look shelving/seat to the left in that alcove like area… like made from the Ikea units or something, but revised to look built it. Your could put pillows on top for a loungy look if you go the “seating” rout.
Or maybe floor to celing open shelves? It could become a collage of your kids photos thru the years or something????? I bet you have some ideas for that bump out area!!!!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, we have been planning either a larger tall armoire or a built-in for that nook someday!

Every time you post a picture with the bedroom door closed it makes me yearn for November when we can see what secret project you did to the other side!

You could always take the picture for size and Photoshop out the project. Unless it’s too big or drastic for Photoshop to cover. Ohhh, the intrigue!

LOVE THE RUG…the colors are to die for. I can only imagine how plush it is. May I humbly suggest you play with the scale of the nightstands? They seem small for the bed and the size of the room. If they were larger you might like it.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, see the door on the right? It will swing into anything larger. We have thought about reversing the swing of the door but it would be in the hallway where we walk, so it might be in the way if we do that. Will keep you posted!

Lisa says
This is not a quick or simple project (involves removing and replacing drywall, etc), but have you considered a pocket door for your bedroom? It will only work, of course, if there is “free” wall space on one side or the other for the door to slide into (no vents, no electrical, etc). Just a thought!
LOVE LOVE LOVE the rug, btw! I am currently redecorating my master bedroom in neutrals – gray, tan, and ivory – but with a few pops of teal blue. That rug is more than a “pop”, but I would kill for it right now!
YoungHouseLove says
Sadly we have a vent and electrical there. Boo!
xo,
s
Lisa says
Another idea! Use one of those hanging barn doors on a track! I think I remember you saying you like those. The door would slide to the left (where the big leaning mirror is now). You would have to move the light switch, but that could be done (move it to the headboard wall so it’s to the right as you walk in).
YoungHouseLove says
Yes, we have thought about that too! There’s some electrical there, but it could work. We have also thought about using a door like that in another spot though, so we don’t want it to be too much. Haha. We’ll have to see where we end up!

I think it looks great! One question: did you think about putting the pattern in the other direction? It seems like the pattern is perpendicular to the flow of the room right this way but perhaps it is just because I am used to seeing pictures of it from this spot in the room.

Oh yes, but it’s rectangular, so it’s too long and not wide enough when we situate it the other way!

Aw man, you trying to make us jealous here?! That is an amazing deal; the color/pattern is awesome too!! Love it. I actually ordered a new rug less than two weeks ago (starting to get impatient for it to arrive) for the kids’ room. I’ve been looking for most of a year – had a very specific look in mind – for a grass green rug, and everything I could find that I loved was $500-$1000. I wasn’t willing to go much more than $300, but they have a big room and I needed at least an 8×10. I finally found a 8.5×12 green rug for only $250 from a school supply place online (they supply school/church/daycare rugs and carpets)!!!! So even though it doesn’t have the white detailing I was hoping for, it’s just like a carpet remanent, it does have finished edges, and worth the bit of compromise for the price. Congrats on your steal!!!
Stephanie says
I did as much moving as I possibly could which mostly turned into buying stuff. I don’t even want to THINK about how much I spent between Target, Costco, Home Depot, and TJMaxx. But I had to buy all sorts of new stuff (sheets, pillows, light bulbs, frying pans, waste baskets, all the stuff most people have but since this is my first place… yeah.)
I also ripped out contact paper. The previous owners put hideous contact paper (blue & white check with teapots) on every single cabinet. So I attacked the kitchen and removed it all. Bathrooms are next. No contact paper is safe…
Oh and I discovered my dryer doesn’t work. Womp womp womp.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh no! That stinks! Hope it’s all fixed soon. All of that home-making stuff sounds like so much fun! New sheets = fun!

I forgot to say… LOVE the rug. It looks so plush and soft. The kind of rug you’d forgo sitting on the bed for, like Burger.
Thanks. I’ve had to fix a few things now (plumbing, electrical) but nothing major. The townhouse was a foreclosure and I don’t think the previous owners took good care of it plus it sat dormant for probably 1 year. It needed a little TLC.
I’m so in love with my new sheets though. lol They’re a beautiful dark purple and I bought a soft white quilt and black/white pillow cases.

What a great find! I think once you get a new bench at the foot of the bed (something larger and lighter) and possibly new nightstands or something things will balance themselves out. I know the door is an issue with the nightstands but they do seem too small for the bed/room.

Yes, someday I’d love to hinge the door so it swings out instead of in- then we can get bigger nightstands!

But what bothers me is the lamp on the ceiling. I love it, in general, but it just doesn’t seem to fit. Well, as I see it anyways! I hope you don’t take offense when I say that! Maybe something more colorful would look nice. It just seems too white, maybe.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh no worries! It might be a you-have-to-be-here thing. It’s our favorite thing to see reflecting like a big snowflake in the mirror over our sink nook. The light is the one thing we love- especially with the new rug! But it’s definitely personal preference!

I got a GREAT deal this weekend. My husband and I were yardsale-ing (that’s a word, right?) and stumbled upon a sale where they had a big pile of curtains. I noticed they were the exact Ikea curtains that you all have in your living room (the white and grey with the leafy pattern…which I’ve coveted from the first time I saw them.) I asked how much he wanted for them and as I counted, I noticed SIX panels. He thinks about it for a second and says “$1.” I think to myself, ‘score…at $1 a panel this might be the greatest deal ever.’ As I pick them up one by one to count them he says to me…”No, no…$1 for all of them.”
I tried to keep my cool face on and I nodded. “Oh…alright.” All the while I’m thinking in my head, “am I really getting $90+ worth of panels for $1?” My husband bought the box set of Band of Brothers for $5 and as we got in our truck to drive away, we both started screaming at how amazing our deals were.
Success!

HAHA, I just commented about the light too… should have read all the posts first I guess!
You are totally right it is a personal choice and preference, and I agree that your Ikea light is lovely!! But I think that maybe your general love for the sparkly snowflake light may be clouding your judgment about it and its location. I think the light is stellar and in the right space (with taller ceilings maybe) it was be AMAZING. But I do tend to agree with the others… I don’t think it fits/works in your room and sadly it may be the item that is holding you back :(

We’re convinced you just have to be in the room in person to appreciate it! Everyone who comes over goes crazy when they see it reflected perfectly in the mirror over the sink – it makes the room in person! But it’s hard to capture in pictures I’m sure!

Very true, I am sure that it sparkles and is amazing and cute in person, and pictures can’t capture that sparkle… as least I am not a good enough photographer to capture anything like that ;)

Ya, the light has never done it for me either. It;s a little better now that the rails are off the bed, but it still seems a little “dorm-y” to me.

The new rug makes the wall color pop more! Very nice.

Love the rug, but I think what’s bugging me is the bed itself. It totally chops up the room in lots of rectangles making things feel halting, if that makes sense. Maybe it’s the white of the bed. But the height (all the way up to the ceiling) feels overwhelming to me and nonsensical and it breaks up the room too much. Just my two cents..

Love it!! And what a steal! You can definitely see what your fav color combo is in this post :) All three rooms have such a similar feel, but yet have their own personalities. Maybe it’d be cool to throw another color into the mix in this room. Maybe something more to the orange/coral spectrum. Oh man, can’t you just see a bright coral dresser/vanity in that left corner?!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, we’d love to find something awesome for that corner someday! And I love the idea of adding more color in general. We’re definitely going to play around with pillows and art in more colors as the room evolves!

Hi Petersilk Family! My husband and I just downsized into a 1971 Disco foreclosure that we got for a song (That song would be “Stayin’ Alive” at this point). We’re stuck in an apt with 2 small dogs for now until we take possession on 6/2 and then we have about 60 days of nonstop contractors to make it livable. I’ll share pics as we go but first I need the key :) So while we’re awaiting quotes on roofs, flooring, etc we knew we needed to get some appliances before we could find cabinets and construct a layout. The kitchen is a tad smaller than our old house. We went to 3 big box stores and 1 sm. appliance store. We took a note from your blog and went to Sears. We still ended up spending $7K but we needed a fridge, double ovens, gas cooktop, dishwasher, & range hood. Between discounts rebates, credit card cash back etc. we bought a full line of Sears Elite and couldn’t be more thrilled. I made my hubs read your recent posting on appliance purchasing and he was ready to roll. Plus our salesman Tony scrounged up every freebie he could muster (cables, hoses, delivery, cleaners, etc.) He also discounted 3 maintenance agreements on a dishwasher (a million moving parts), double ovens (has a motherboard), and last but not least the fridge (motherboard, compressor, ice maker… need I go on?). Tony asked us all the right usage questions, didn’t pressure us to buy, and kept in mind the fact that we still have a huge amount of moolah going to other parts of the house. He also made sure we weren’t buying “up” too much for the house, so we will get our investment back. We aren’t looking to move soon but we’ve been transferred too many times. Our mantra is “resale, resale, resale”. Thanks for all your help and letting me crib your notes :) Have a great week. BTW: Totally amazing rug!
