Known as one of the most colorful minerals in the world, rainbow fluorite is a mesmerizing multicolored crystal with distinctive purple, blue, and green banding. Beyond its obvious decorative qualities, it’s enjoyed around the world for a multitude of manufacturing benefits – and many believe it has metaphysical properties as well.
What Is Rainbow Fluorite?
Rainbow fluorite is a multicolored variety of the mineral fluorite, also called fluorspar when used in manufacturing. It is the crystal form of calcium fluoride which, like table salt, is a member of the halite family. Fluorite is an abundant mineral that’s most commonly found in Mexico and China, but also in the United States, Spain, Russia, and more. It has a variety of industrial uses and is even the source of the fluoride that goes into your toothpaste!
Pure fluorite is clear and colorless, but chemical impurities can give it a wide range of colors. For this reason, it’s often called “the most colorful mineral in the world.” Purple is the most common fluorite color and it’s sometimes confused with amethyst. Each color is believed to have its own unique meaning and properties, including the multicolored version dubbed rainbow fluorite. You can see it above along with a light green fluorite point I also own.

Rainbow Fluorite FAQ
How To Cleanse Fluorite
People charge and cleanse their fluorite crystals in many ways. My preferred method is leaving it outside overnight in the moonlight during a full moon. You can also charge a rainbow fluorite in the sunlight, but prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause its color to fade over time.
How To Care For Fluorite
Fluorite crystals are easy to care for and typically only require occasional dusting. You can also use a damp cloth to wipe away stains. Fluorite is porous, however, so it should not be soaked in water. It is also a relatively soft mineral (only a 4 out of 10 on the Mohs hardness scale) so take care not to scratch it when cleaning.
What Is Rainbow Fluorite Also Known As?
Fluorite is also called Fluorspar, but this is typically when the mineral is used for manufacturing. Flourite is the preferred term for crystal collectors. Rainbow Fluorite has also earned nicknames such as “The Genius Stone,” the “Rainbow Keeper,” and the “Gemstone of Discernment.”
Is Rainbow Fluorite Rare?
Geologically speaking, fluorites are a common mineral. Rainbow fluorite is less common, but is still widely available for sale at affordable prices. Rare varieties of fluorite are often single-color fluorites such as pink, black, or yellow fluorite.
Why Is It Called Fluorite?
Fluorite comes from the Latin word “fluere” which means “to flow,” a reference to its use as flux in metalwork. It was originally called Fluorspar, which is still the preferred term for manufacturing uses. Fluorite refers to the mineral form that is sought by collectors and crystal enthusiasts. Fluorite also inspired the name of the chemical element fluorine and other terms such as “fluorescent,” since some fluorite deposits react to UV light.
