The boldest color we’ve ever used on any wall is Martha Stewart’s Plumage (which we slathered all over our guest room walls). Long story short: we’ve loved it ever since. So when Jackie sent us her dining room makeover boasting lots of Plumage, of course we were all over it. Here’s her letter:
“When we moved into this house, the dining room started with just a table and the bamboo armoire. We didn’t even have dining chairs.
Over the last six months I prioritized finishing this room in time for the holidays. It is filled with DIY projects including art silhouettes, board and batten walls, mercury glass vases, jute wrapped monogram, and my favorite: the DIY linear crystal chandelier.
After making the head chair slipcovers from tablecloths, I followed your tutorial to dye the side chairs a coordinating color.
It took me two tries to get the right color too, but your story gave me confidence for the second round of dying.
I have blogged about all the DIY dining room projects on my blog, aptly named Teal & Lime (I promise I do like other colors too). Thank you for your continued inspiration and over-sharing. I’ve really enjoyed watching you transform your new home.” – Jackie
Since it’s no mystery why we fell for the teal and lime color scheme, we just have one question: what time is dinner? Thanks for sharing Jackie! Aren’t those silhouettes mixed with the curvy wood mirror fun? Can you believe they DIYed the board and batten walls and even made those slipcovers from tablecloths? Such an inspiring room! Let’s play the what’s-your-favorite-part game. Mine is the dapper dog silhouette and Sherry’s is the curvy wood mirror (closely followed by that homemade linear crystal chandelier).

Beautiful! But the wainscoting to wall dimensions appear off, traditional wainscotiong should make up 1/3 or 2/3 of the wall. Is that the case here?
Jackie says
Ed,
Thanks for the comment. You are correct. The wainscoting is “off” from traditional recommendations. We wanted it to be high, but not too high. The room has 9′ ft ceilings, so the 2/3 rule would have put the board and batten to 6′ ft. It would have looked a bit akward on the arched wall. We opted instead to line up the top ledge with the centerline of the window for balance. The top ledge is 5′ high. It is a bit non-traditional, but we thought it worked better for our space.

This is giving me the courage to paint my bedroom (ceiling and all) in a very dark turquoise!

And I like the size and colour of the silhouettes as well, lovely proportions.
You know, I always hear “plumage” in a Monty Python voice, always have…
Emily says
Wow! Love everything about this transformation. Those contrasting silhouettes are fun!

I love the color! It’s cool to see it in another space besides your dining room. My favorite part is the chairs. They are beautiful!

I am SO afraid of dark colors but this looks fantastic!

MS Plumage is DA BOMB!!! I fell in love w/ it when I saw your guest room and knew it would be the perfect color for my boys’ room re-do. The boys love it, I love it, and everyone who sees it loves it! We used MS Heavy Goose on the ceiling and it’s a great combo.

I’m in love with the woodwork in your dining room and would LOVE to do it in ours. Any tips and tricks?

There’s a link over to their site about that project in this post if that helps!

She did an excellent job! My favorite parts are both the board and batten walls (I’ve seen that a few places and it’s just so crisp looking) and the dog silhouette! I love when people consider dogs as another family member…that’s how my family was growing up!
Kate says
Loving that board and batten! I’ve tried to stop myself from tearing out idea pages from magazines because it was getting out of hand, but just this week I tore out a photo of a board and batten accent wall. It’s the perfect solution for our no-character modular Cape Cod. Now I just need an electrician to remove the nasty electric baseboard so I can board and batten away!

Gorgeous! It kinda makes me miss my old teal walls.
I have GOT to go check out the chandelier DIY. That’s right up my alley.

I LOVE the blue! Such a great vintage and modern feel. I’m new to the blog so forgive me if you’re already aware, but do you ever get color pallet ideas from Colour Lovers?

Will have to check it out!

The wall treatment is the exact project I have planned! I’m so excited to go read how they did it. We will paint the top and carmel color though but as soon as I get my husband on board I plan to do the LR a satuated blueish/teal. Love this–she should be so proud. He design is beautiful–actually *doing* it is even more impressive! :)

Love it! What a fantastic redo.

This is such a fabulous space! I love the color combos and the fact that so many aspects of the room were DIY projects makes it even better! Thanks for sharing! :)

That color + board and batten is so fresh! I think I could be comfortable branching out and trying all sorts of new colors if I put up some board and batten of my own! Also could we maybe get a source on the armoire? It’s lovely. (apologies in advance if your source list is on your blog and I accidentally missed it)

Here’s hoping she drops in with that info!

Love it!!! But I feel as if it’s missing crown molding…
Jackie says
Alan,
I agree. We want to add crown throughout the house and just haven’t gotten to that project yet.
Jackie says
The armoire is from Room & Board. It is actually a media cabinet made from bamboo. We are blessed to live within 30 minutes of their Minneapolis outlet and we got the piece 50% off. It used to be our TV cabinet in our last house. Now it is spot to store my party decor and entertaining supplies. I plan to outfit the inside with more shelves to expand it’s storage potential. I will be sure to share those details when I get to it. Sorry, it does not look like Room & Board carries this armoire anymore, but they have other similar styles.

This room is so beautiful! We’re in the process of building a home and picking things out such as paint color, etc. It’s exciting, but challenging to make all sorts of decisions. Also super scary! Love you guys for your wonderful inspiration. I will try to channel your creativity as our new home comes together.

Just discovered your blog, very cool. We went from a big house(and mtg.)to smaller digs and do in fact dig it! Anyway great job on this and some terrific ideas! As far as the wainscotting, I always do my own dimensions…kind of one off sort of thing. Great site. Thanks!

I LOVE this room!! Such an inspiration!
I geeked out on the slipcovers too… I just recovered some pillows on my couch using that same tablecloth! Love the print and you can’t beat the price… cheaper than similar fabrics by the yard :)
