Projects like Shannon’s almost make us wish we had four daughters running around. I should emphasize the “almost” on that. Haha. But, once you see the project Shannon took on, you’ll see why the idea of having four girls around sounds kinda awesome (and this is coming from a guy who grew up with three sisters).
Hey guys! It’s so funny reading your blog. We were and are where you guys are – but we started almost ten years ago when we bought our first house. Since then we’ve brought our total baby count to five (yup, five!) and we’re still in the same house – trying to make it work. Anyway, with the birth of our fifth baby/fourth girl last may we couldn’t figure out how to break up the kiddos among the 3 bedrooms we have for them. Initial plans were 2 girls/2 girls/1 boy… but then we found the double bunk room over at augustfields.blogspot.com and it was love at first sight! So last month the mister took off the week between Christmas and New Years and we got our major renovation groove on.
In ten days we took out a wall, merged two rooms into one, built a double bunk bed unit and finished the room – if not to completion, at least a good portion of the way. And we did it all on the super cheap. SUPER, super cheap.
Creating secret storage spaces like pull out drawers (on casters) have really come in handy.
I made these silhouette pillows for each of the girls, to add something personal to each of their beds.
We went with a playful striped ceiling (like the one here), and love the bold color it brings into the room.
Inexpensive dressers (three Malm ones from Ikea) and turquoise walls make the room fun and functional.
The girls love it, and so do we!
Thanks for checking it out! – xoxo, Shannon
How fun is that? We’re sending out a huge thanks and a giant bravo to Shannon and her mister for sharing their awesome project. If you wanna see more of the inspiration, progress, and reveal pics – be sure to click over to Shannon’s blog too. Who knows, maybe we can all score a sleepover invitation. Hah. Oh and let’s play the what’s-your-favorite-part game. I’m loving the built-in drawer storage and Sherry’s dying for the stripey ceiling.

SO cute!
I’m curious about the bottom left drawer of the dresser – how does it open with the wall board heater right there?
I think this is even more inspiring when you see the before pictures! They put so much work into the original room, it took a lot to demo that!!
@Kim – they might hate it as teenagers but if it’s what they know they’ll probably be fine. My sister and I finally had separate rooms as teenagers and we were still pissy teenagers (why do our rooms have to right next to each other? she’s SO irritating! and many other teenage gems!!). Just a lazy observation, siblings who grew up in smaller homes and shared bedrooms seem to have closer adult relationships than those that had larger spaces and separate bedrooms. Not scientific and certainly not definitive it’s just something that I’ve noticed as a generality.
shannon/googiemomma says
it doesn’t ;) hehe! that was the choice we made–to use the rest of the space fully, we sacrificed one dresser drawer.
after everything was fit in and finalized, i realized i probably should have put some stuff in there–like a time capsule! i hate that i thought of that after.
and thanks for the real-life experience! it makes us happier in our decision!

Are you kidding me? Those peeps have some serious skillz! (alrighty – I’m not cool enough to talk like that.) We are expecting baby #4 in October and I would love to plop them all into those fantastic beds. Thanks for sharing!
Teri says
This room is amazing. What a fun place to sleep! I’m all grown up and I would love to sleep in this room. Love Love Love everything from the paint colors to the way the dressers fit so perfectly and of course the wonderful bunks!
ps….can’t believe a company would hack in for free advertisment. You guys must stay very very busy with this blog thing, so glad you do it seems like it can be exhausting!
YoungHouseLove says
It’s usually just code that slips through our parameters (so we say no sound/video but folks pretend they don’t see that and put in code to see if it slips through). Thank goodness you guys keep an eye out for us! Especially because some things are only run in certain areas and we’re out here in VA! Haha.

This looks adorable but I know, without a doubt, my 4 would murder each other within two days with this setup! :D
andrea says
Please take this as a compliment, but I’m always a little disappointed when you do a reader redesign post. Just cause I like you guys and your own house love/life posts so much! :) Although I’m sure it gives you guys some much needed breathing room on your own end (and this room is really cute).
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Andrea! We brought them back due to popular demand and we really do love sharing them! Not only do they help us steal some time to write up/complete our own projects, they allow us to share other amazing home makeovers that we’d never have the opportunity to take on in our own house (and to share other styles for folks who are looking for more of a range). We’re just suckers for a good DIY job and love to share the love!

love the ceilings and the chandeliers adds such a touch of elegance. I have 2 girls and a boy. They are all under 5, but I cant wait to watch them grow!! :) so cute!
Melody @CCC says
I grew up with 3 sisters, so I’m smitten with the idea of 4 girls! LOVE the room!
Crystal @ 29 Rue House says
This is such a neat room – love the ceilings! I actually first saw this on DIY Showoff a few months ago.
Megan says
I know some people are questioning whether the girls will still want it when they get older and I’m sure it could be an issue. But I know that when we were teenagers my parents moved from a house where my sister and I shared a room to a house where there was space for us each to have our own and I put twin beds in mine so my little sister could still share our rooms some nights. I think it’s genetic, though. My mom and her sister shared a BED their whole childhood/teenage years.
The room is beautiful! I hope they enjoy it for years to come!
shannon/googiemomma says
love this! even though we had our own rooms my brother and i shared a bed until i was 11 or 12. and then as a teenager i shared with my baby brother until i got married and moved out! sharing isn’t bad!
(shoot–i still have to share my room haha!)
Stacy says
That is awesome! I think sometimes you have to ignore resell value and make a house that works for you, now, as they have. I’m sure as their girls get older they won’t want to share but judging from ages based on the pictures, they can get a good 4-6 years with this solution. Way to go!
Amy @ a new old house says
Such an awesome room! I love how the sets of beds are separated by the stairs- and how each bed has it’s own little light. Each is a perfect little nook!
Nicole says
So fun! I love it.
Jill Stigs says
I love the whole room! How fantastic. I would paint that desk and chair to match the stripe on the ceiling!
Also for those naysayers on resale value, they can always put up a wall(to make 2 bedrooms)when that time comes, if ever. It’s important to make your place work for YOU and your family and those children look thrilled. Great job!
shannon/googiemomma says
ooh–good idea on the desk!
and we have the same feelings about the wall–it’s not a load bearing wall that we ripped out, so it really would be no trouble to throw one back up in a pinch.
LARY @ Inspiration Nook says
The ceiling and the silhouette pillows are my fave!
Jessica says
amazing!!! Those beds are the coolest, and I love the idea of shared rooms for kids. Those sisters are going to be so close.
Melissa says
I LOVE this. I wish I this had been in my college sorority house, actually! GREAT use of space– personal room, etc.!
vanessa says
Love the color combo, the ceiling, and beautiful chandelier. With three girls and one boy, we knocked down a wall and made the girls room a whole lot bigger and my brothers room a whole lots smaller. Wish we woul’dve done something like this though… maybe a triple bunk?

I’ve had my eye on built-in bunkbeds lately, so I’m loving these with the awesome special touches like a curtain for privacy.
Carrie says
I don’t have kids and I likely won’t have kids (Love children to pieces but I have a chronic illness and most days it’s a lot just to take care of myself and the puppies.) but I want a room like this in my house anyway. I could sleep in a different bed everynight. Or have a different reading spot for each day of the week. I’d figure something out to do with it. :)
I love the teal and red!
Jenn M. says
Love the idea and the colors, stripes, everything just worked together! I bet the girls are having so much fun and will make them closer. However, since the girls are different ages, might be that soon enough they’d want their own space/privacy. What then?
shannon/googiemomma says
they do have their own space–they’re already very respectful and protective of each bed.
as for when they get older…well, we’ll let you know? hehe seriously though–one main factor in the decision was that the girls were sharing a room either way. it wasn’t 4 separate rooms or one big one, it was share with one sister or all sisters. so they have their private space–albeit a small one!
Mallory says
UMMM can I live there?! Seriously I think this is my favorite one you have featured. We want a house full of kids and I have been thinking something like this would be fantastic for the future, but WOW they did an amazing job. There is nothing I don’t love.
LauraC says
Wow, off-the-charts-awesome!
gemma@thesweetestdigs says
wow – i adore this room!! what a great use of space and it’s just SO fun.
I think I may need to try coloured stripes on a ceiling somewhere. I did a gray and white chevron ceiling recently (http://thesweetestdigs.com/2012/01/26/the-diy-files-painted-patterned-ceiling/), inspired by one of your other reader re-designs. Keep ’em coming! :)

Can I please be 12 again? I would love to have that room, and sisters. Since I only got brothers, sisters always sounding like a much better idea to me.
shannon/googiemomma says
ditto! the older i get, the more i wish i had a sister. i’m a little jealous of my girls.
cara says
Love the colors, the same as my nursery. I really like the stairs to the second bunk instead of a ladder.
Linda Calder says
What a fantastic idea for a large family and a small house.
laura @ hollywood housewife says
That’s the best reader re-design I’ve ever seen! So cute. We have a striped ceiling in our playroom, and I swear that it makes the room. Such a simple and cheap thing to do, with HUGE impact.
Kristy Swain says
I love double bunks like this! And, that striped ceiling is adorable. Interesting that instead of 2,2,1, you did 4, 1 and now have one less bedroom. Think you will miss it? Absolutely adorable! Makes me want a bunk room!
shannon/googiemomma says
no, we don’t miss the bedroom right now. if need be we can always rework things at some point in the future and put the wall back up.
Tracy K says
Sherry…this has zero to do with today’s post, but has anyone ever told you you look like Amanda Peet?
I hope you’re not offended by that. You are both pretty ladies.
I once made the mistake of telling someone they resembled someone else & they did not take it well!
I’m guessing you’re not that type. :)
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, yes I used to get that a lot! Lately it has been Rachel McAdams or that girl from Game if Thrones (who looks more like me with her original brown hair). Haha, I must have one of those faces!

I had to look up the Game of Thrones actress, but OMG! Yes! Her name is Emilia Clarke. How funny you have so many doppelgangers.
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, isn’t that funny? She’s the one I think would be fun to meet in real life, just so we could play “girl looking in the mirror” and face each other and mimick each other. Haha. Of course she’s the thinner, prettier, richer version, but I’ll take it! Haha.

So stinkin’ cute! You guys did a great job. Yay you!
Christina Murray says
That is such a great space!! I love the striped ceiling with the teal and the crisp white furniture. I really just love it all. I’ve always wanted to have a lake house, and part of that is to have a kid’s room with double bunks.

This room thrills me to no end. I am so impressed with the design and the handiwork. I will be checking out this blog more too.

This is incredible. I grew up with four girls in my family. There was one point in our family when all four girls shared the master bedroom. We still talk about how much fun that time was. I have never had my own bedroom and don’t plan on my kids having their own bedrooms. This redo is fabulous. Great job!
shannon/googiemomma says
it just thrills us to hear that! thanks so much!
Tassi says
I should add that two of us were teenagers.
Allison says
This is amazing! I’ve been looking for some solutions for our family cabin and have been toying with the idea of built in bunkbeds but didn’t know where to start. Awseome!
Amanda says
It’s an absolutely adorable room!!! I love the colors and the concept!!!
As the youngest of four girls, I do think that you’ve preemptively avoided a lot of fights by making four separate “zones” where each girl can have privacy (which is oh-so-important in those teenage years), as well as their own control over light (which is oh-so-important when you have multiple children on different sleep times).
Separate rooms will not stop fighting between sisters. Heck, as an adult, I can honestly tell you that separate states will not stop fighting between sisters.
The only thing I’d worry about is the three dressers for four girls.
shannon/googiemomma says
this made me laugh SO HARD!! my mom is one of four girls, too–and yes, even separate states don’t stop the fighting!
truer words have never been spoken. ;)
the dresser space is minimal, but the closet space is pretty extensive. and with 7 people in the family i try hard to keep a tight reign on the AMOUNT of clothing we have anyway–seriously–who needs to do all that laundry??!?!
r8chel says
I love that each bed has a light on the wall next to it. So cozy.
Jen says
What is not to love about this space? The colors are fantastic, the stripes are insane cute and those beds are every kid’s fantasy! The best part is that there are stairs, we ditched our bunk beds because the ladder was such a pain for this mama wanting to snuggle with her babes. So inspiring, they really did a great job!
xoxo,
Jen

So freaking cool! I’ve seen a few projects like this on Pinterest and it would be neat to do something like that for our 3 boys. Not sure if we’ll go for it… but this makes it seem like a fantastic idea. :)
Jen @ www.migonishome.com says
Shannon, there is not one thing I am not gaga over. Love the chandelier, the ceiling, the color scheme and obviously the beds are amazing!!!! The photo of your children is completely cute.
Kim S says
Love love love it! As for my favorite part, I can’t pick just one, so I will say the color scheme, the striped ceiling + chandelier (fun + fancy!), and the stairs up to the top bunks!
Kaitlin A says
We’re painting our ceiling right now- but now I want stripes! SO CUTE!
shannon/googiemomma says
there’s still time! just get a contrasting color–QUICK!
Amy says
WOW! 5 kids and time for a reno… absolutely inspiring!
[email protected] says
shannon! these are awesome! you were sweet enough to email me the reveal and with this pregnancy i’ve practically been “gone to the blog world”. SO glad to see you are enjoying the setup as much as we do and that your A.MAZ.ING. room was featured here!
We have the boy bunk room and a girl bunk room (no bunks just beds) and they love it and so do we!
Cheers to LOTS of awesome memories!
Debbie C says
Wow, so creative and bold! I LOVE the stairs in between the bunks, so much safer and easier to climb that the typical library-style ladder, brilliant!
Joanna says
That is adorb! (Yes, adorb.) I’m loving the whimsical and refreshing color combo. And, the fact they finished this in one week….

Love it! Great idea to maximize space.
