Projects like Shannon’s almost make us wish we had four daughters running around. I should emphasize the “almost” on that. Haha. But, once you see the project Shannon took on, you’ll see why the idea of having four girls around sounds kinda awesome (and this is coming from a guy who grew up with three sisters).
Hey guys! It’s so funny reading your blog. We were and are where you guys are – but we started almost ten years ago when we bought our first house. Since then we’ve brought our total baby count to five (yup, five!) and we’re still in the same house – trying to make it work. Anyway, with the birth of our fifth baby/fourth girl last may we couldn’t figure out how to break up the kiddos among the 3 bedrooms we have for them. Initial plans were 2 girls/2 girls/1 boy… but then we found the double bunk room over at augustfields.blogspot.com and it was love at first sight! So last month the mister took off the week between Christmas and New Years and we got our major renovation groove on.
In ten days we took out a wall, merged two rooms into one, built a double bunk bed unit and finished the room – if not to completion, at least a good portion of the way. And we did it all on the super cheap. SUPER, super cheap.
Creating secret storage spaces like pull out drawers (on casters) have really come in handy.
I made these silhouette pillows for each of the girls, to add something personal to each of their beds.
We went with a playful striped ceiling (like the one here), and love the bold color it brings into the room.
Inexpensive dressers (three Malm ones from Ikea) and turquoise walls make the room fun and functional.
The girls love it, and so do we!
Thanks for checking it out! – xoxo, Shannon
How fun is that? We’re sending out a huge thanks and a giant bravo to Shannon and her mister for sharing their awesome project. If you wanna see more of the inspiration, progress, and reveal pics – be sure to click over to Shannon’s blog too. Who knows, maybe we can all score a sleepover invitation. Hah. Oh and let’s play the what’s-your-favorite-part game. I’m loving the built-in drawer storage and Sherry’s dying for the stripey ceiling.

Love it…. SO MUCH. My sister and I share a room (yep, bunkbeds and all) and we LOVE this room. Is it possible to ship a room 1,000 miles? Because if it was, we’d totally be in to that ;)

I wish my bunk beds had been that awesome when I was little.

This room is GORGEOUS!!!!!! Now…. I just need 3 more girls, a bigger room and a much handier husband!

I love the silhouette pillows and the curtained closets aaaand the dancing ballerinas on the dresser. That is the theme for my baby girls room and she would flip if she saw this. Off to visit Shannons blog and find out where she got her stuff. Beautiful redesign.
My best, Lynn

Loving those ceilings! So playful yet classic! Love it!

I seriously enjoyed reading all of Shannon’s posts on this bunk room! What a fun idea and it turned out so gorgeous! I particularly love the colors.
We have 3 kids…2 boys, 1 girl. My boys had separate rooms but continually ended up sleeping in one room. So we finally put them in together and said “this is it, no going back”. They are 14 and 12 now and still love sharing. So not everyone has the “they will hate it when they’re older” experience. As a matter of fact, my daughter mourns the fact that she has no one to share with so one of the dogs has a bed in her room! LOL!

Amazing!!! Am I the only one who thought the first pic was an inspiration pic? Seriously, what a stunning job! I love the ceiling, the way it plays of the curtains at each bed, the way it plays off the wall color, and, well…. I love everything about this room!
Sharing a room is great if well-guided by parents (which it totally sounds like you’ve done!). There’s a family at my church w/ 7 girls in 2 bedrooms, and they totally make it work! They have their fights, but overall they’re extremely close.

*off* the curtains

Everything about this room is amazing! I can’t pick a favorite part. I always see bunk beds like that on Pinterest, but seeing it in a real house getting used is awesome!

I love the room! Colour, stripes, beds – everything.
I grew up with 3 sisters, we all had our own rooms and that certainly didn’t keep us from fighting…
Just one thing I thought of: maybe later on the girls would like to be able to close of the ends to the stairs on the top beds as well, so you might want to get some more of that fabric while you still can.
Compliments on a job very well done!

This is the best kids’ room I have ever seen in my life. No, the best *bedroom* I’ve ever seen in my life. The right mix of whimsy and color and clean lines and elegance. Unbelievable!!! Bravo!

The whole room is pretty darn awesome. I love the personal touch they gave the malm. Do you guys know if it was easy to drill into, if the vaneer cracked or any tips?
YoungHouseLove says
I can’t speak for their experience, but one way to help keep the veneer from cracking is to put a piece of tape (like painters tape) over the spot you’re going to drill and drill through the tape. It’ll help keep it together better. Also, be sure to start with a small pilot hole and work you way up larger.

So much AWESOME crammed into one room! Love it.

I love seeing people just working with the space they have, instead of this crazy “gotta upgrade to a McMansion” thing that I see so much of out here in the ‘burbs where I live.
I have 4 kids, and 3 daughters, and definitely have two sets of bunk beds in a room! It’s really the only way!
My kids’ room isn’t anywhere NEAR as stylish due to the restrictions I have, being in an apartment and all, but I finally bit the bullet and bought a house. 4 kids in 1100 square feet will do that to a person, and at some point, my son will need to have his own room away from his sisters… and making a boy share a bathroom with 3 girls? That’s just cruel.
I look forward to stealing a lot of the design elements here. Striped ceiling? Heck yeah!
Bethany says
LOVE!!!!!! thanks for sharing this!!!!
Tirsa says
Love this room! My favorite are the striped ceiling and the drawers at the bottom. I can imagine all the fun the four girls have together in one room.
Wendy says
Fantastic job both of you. I have four daughters who share rooms. I put a thin magnetic strip above the head of their beds to put up pictures and such. It helps to personalize their space without clutter. They love picking out their own magnets. They just have to be huge so the little won’t choke:) What a great family and project!

Such a cute idea!

It would be great to credit my friend Krista over at Kiki’s List, since she was the originator of the striped ceiling idea that Shannon used in this redesign….

Done! We just publish the letters we receive, so that’s why the link wasn’t originally in there, but we updated it. What an awesome room!

I love the Runny Bunny! I collect kitsch Keane/Big Eye art including “pitty puppy” figurines, and I purchased a ceramic hybrid from the Runny Bunny of a pitty puppy head on Little Lord Fauntleroy’s body.

Oops. I commented under the wrong post. Obviously it was meant for the one that mentioned the Runny Bunny.

Haha, no worries! I knew what you meant!

The bunks are great and I want to do that in one of my bedrooms. Where can I get the plans to build it?
