Ready for some wow? Jess and Monica really turned some out for this makeover of their friend’s guest room. Sherry has been obsessed with houndstooth ever since I met her and you’re about to see a pretty cool take on it below. Here’s their letter:
Hi John and Sherry! We just finished a fun and affordable room redesign for our friends Connie & Mark, so we thought we’d share it with you. When a close friend asks you to help re-do their bubble-gum pink, non-descript guest room, you can’t say no.
Our favorite part of the room is the multi-colored houndstooth stencil. We love how it’s kind of a modern spin on a classic pattern. It was definitely a labor of love (we even called in some backup assistance), but it makes a huge impact in the room. It definitely set the tone for the rest of the space: mixing old with new.
We made the headboard out of old shutters (or are they doors? Not sure!). We needed something that would stand out from the wall, command attention, and add some character, so we were happy to find these.
Connie & Mark had this dresser that we knew we could wake up with some paint and new hardware, so that saved us some big bucks! Another fun part was coming up with a unique way to showcase Connie’s collection of old family photos. A simple gallery wall worked really well.
We wanted the room to be functional too. Since this is their guest room, we made sure to add some towels and an extra blanket to the $8 industrial cart so their guests feel at home.
We’re already planning a sleepover at Connie and Mark’s. Thanks for letting us share! – Monica & Jess
As much as I can’t stop looking at that stencil, I have to say I’m really digging the rustic, subdued touches that anchor the room. Nice work ladies – your friends must be in love. And for those who want to love on this room a bit more, you can check out some extra photos and deets on their blog. But first tell us your favorite part. Is it the stencil? The blue dresser? The suitcases at the foot of the bed? The homemade headboard? That cute plant stand? There’s definitely lots to love…
Vidya @ Whats Ur Home Story says
Speechless. Totally digging it.
Kristin says
OMG. The houndstooth, the houndstooth, the houndstooth! LOVE IT.
Stephanie says
OMG. That stencil is AMAZING. Can they come do it in my room please?? lol. Love it. And I love how everything else isn’t over the top but is still special.
Christa @ a*typicaljourney says
I’m not gonna lie, I think my favorite part is the juxtaposition of the brightly colored accents with the perfectly putty-colored walls. I’m completely enamored with that color! Such a great transformation!
And the stencil is obviously To.Die.For.
Brenda says
Wow! I just love the way the headboard looks against that amazing wall.
Michele A says
Ohhhhhhhh!
Ohhhhhhhh!
Love love love!!!
I love that headboard! Are you kidding? Shut.Your.Mouth.
I totally need that.
East Coast Creative- Monica & Jess says
Michelle- so glad you like it! And your Shut.your.mouth comment reminded me of something… look at my foyer wall…http://www.eastcoastcreativeblog.com/2012/09/design-it-how-you-like-it-ec2-house.html
Ha! Thanks for checking us out!

What a great foyer!
Shannon says
I love it!! Seriously! And I want that plant stand…
Katherine (@ KM Decor) says
Wow! I absolutely LOVE the houndstooth. I’ve done a wall stencil in our master bedroom too -http://kmdecor.blogspot.ca/2012/08/master-bedroom-reveal.html. It really makes a difference with the room, and the colours they chose really liven up the space!
shelley johannes says
For me it’s a tie between the houndstooth stencil and the Do Justly, Love Mercy, Walk Humbly art. One of my favorite verses – I love how it’s displayed simple and graphic.
East Coast Creative- Monica & Jess says
Thanks Shelley!
We actually just typed it up in Picmonkey.com and then had it printed onto foamcore at Staples. It’s our friend Connie’s favorite verse too!
Thanks for visiting!

Ashley says
I love stenciling! My walls are a light grey and I would love to do a shimmery, irredecent pattern. My walls are textured, however. I wonder if it would still work?
East Coast Creative- Monica & Jess says
Hey Ashley- I think it would depend on how textured the walls are, but I know Royal Design Studio sells stencil creams that work well with texture. We’ve used them a few times! They have tons of iridescent colors!

That is such an awesome looking room now!
Alyssa says
I love the use of the old and the new. It is an amazing mixture of items, colors, and textures.
Well done
Elisabeth@SimplyParkers says
LOVE the headboard! Beautiful.
Andrea says
oh my goodness — sorry to be the black sheep here, but that stencil makes my eyes cross.
I’m all about gentle, neutral bedroom environments, so take my comment with the requisite barrel of salt. In a paler (single) color, or just in the grey, I think I’d love it, and they’ve done other wonderful things in that room, but ouch! my aching eyes!
East Coast Creative- Monica & Jess says
Ha! Thanks for your honesty Andrea. I sort of think my mother-in-law feels the same way (I showed her pictures). I’m kind of a go big or go home gal so I was happy when our friends were game for us to try it! I do think it would look pretty with all different shades of soft greys!

WOW! That’s not just a re-do…THAT’S A RE-DO!
And I love that headboard! Nice job!

The pattern reminds me of a Star Wars ship. Can you tell I have 3 boys? lol
Callie says
Wow!! Love. It.

Wow! What creativity! Amazing job!

Man…I wish I had friends to redesign my bedrooms!
Niki T says
is the nifty plant-stand and upcycled ashtray? I’ve seen a few funky old ashtrays like my grandpa used to have in his office back in the day. I love the way they look. I’ve thought about repurposing them as a plant stand or something else.
YoungHouseLove says
Here’s hoping they drop in with that info!

East Coast Creative- Monica & Jess says
Hey Niki- You totally nailed it! It’s an ashtray we picked up from our local Habitat for Humanity Re-Store. We actually first used in on an episode we did for Nate and then we glazed it with stencil creams for Connie and Mark’s room. I think this might now be the most famous ashtray around. HA!

I LOVE houndstooth!!!!! We’re Bama fans so of course we love it :)
I have been eyeing a houndstooth stencil forever and my husband, while he loves houndstooth, isn’t sure how it would look on a wall. I will be showing this to him. Maybe this will change his mind…..
I love the room. It’s very fun and I love the colors. Thanks for sharing!
Stephany says
WOW!! AAAAAAmazing! Love it all- the stencil, the picture wall- the painted dresser- WOW!!!
Stacy says
Love that wall! Checking out the stencil site right now for it! :)
Kim W Rily says
I gotta say, I’m not huge on the multicolored houndstooth. I think keeping it two toned would have been my way to tackle it. However, I LOVE the shutter headboard, the bird pillow, the shelf, the suitcases. Love those extra touches. They make the room.
Wrenaria says
Um. I’ll move in now, please. Love it all.
Heather @ AccomplishingDreams says
Oh MY GOSH! Can they come do the exact same thing in my spare bedroom please?? Aside from the fantastic stenciling job, I am in love with all of the vintage accessories in the room and the headboard is fantastic!
Agnes says
Oh no! Where did the elliptical go!?!?! Design over fitness, eh?
I have yet to see a stylish room that sucessfully incorporates an *ugly* exercise machine :-)
Is it impossible?
YoungHouseLove says
Here’s hoping they drop by with the new whereabouts of the machine! Haha.

East Coast Creative- Monica & Jess says
Ha! Agnes, your comment really made me laugh! We did plan to bring the elliptical back in (we were going to have it near the accent chair in the corner) but Connie and Mark decided they wanted it in their bedroom instead. When they have company (which is often bc their parents live out of state) Con didn’t want to be working out in the middle of her guests! I sort of agree bc I’ve seen her work out and it’s a mess! hehe!

I agree the makeover is awesome!…but, even more awesome is the post title…FOXY HOUNDSTOOTH…hahaha!! You guys must be aces at word association games!!
keri says
maybe i am crazy, but i am head over heels for that little blanket/towel/globe stand!
Shevon says
Is it me or are those individual stencils looking a lot like one of the spaceships in the Galaga arcade game?
todd says
That is EXACTLY what I was going to say.
Steph says
Hi Jess and Monica! I’d like to also be your friend, you know, so I can casually call you up and ask for some assistance on redoing my um, whole house.
Seriously though, this is AMAZING! I’ve been reading YHL for years and this is easily my favorite, favorite reader redesign. I know the stencil is amazing, but the rest of the room doesn’t disappoint either! I want to move in here!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha! Their friend-requests are now going to go through the roof!

THIS TOTALLY ROCKS THE HOUSE!! I lurrrrve it. Everything about it is right up my alley. Nice work!
Christina @ Homemade Ocean says
Holy awesome! I love that it is so different from what is really trending (chevron, stripes, yada yada) So refreshing.
When can I come stay with you :)
Monique says
Haha, Holy Awesome, I love it!
And I love this redesign. I love houndstooth and this turned out great! I don’t think I’d ever have the patience to stencil anything like this. (Also Sherry, I would have given up on the office stencil after about 30 minutes!)
Ashley {GirlyObsessions} says
I LOVE anything houndstooth and that wall is NO exception. So amazing and graphic and bold! Swooning over it!
Carra says
I have an awesome wicker and vintage blue suitcase at the foot of my guest bed :) SO FUN!
Jill says
I love this whole room!!! Except for the pillows on the bed. They are great by themselves but I don’t like them with the houndstooth. Just my opinion though! I want to do this houndstooth in my room with beiges and greys! WOOOO! thanks for the idea! great job!
Paige @ Little Nostalgia says
Okay, the houndstooth mixed with the fabrics on the pillows! That should be in a textbook for how you use patterns together! I’m blown away.
Shona says
This is gorgeous and so inspiring! My head is swimming with big ideas for my son’s “big boy” room down the road. Who knew houndstooth could be so versatile?
Sarah K says
These colors are amazing. I’m a more recent houndstooth fan – in fact I just bought hot pink houndstooth flannel to use in a baby blanket. I don’t know if I’ll ever have the patience to paint a wall with that many colors, but it looks amazing! Glad they had the courage and patience to do it.

Chrissy Sparks (Brush Dance) says
Wow! I love that headboard against the patterned wall!
katalina says
well I love the pillows and want details! I also really love that industrial cubby thingy on wall with the numbers —but alas no details on their site (sob) for both of these….makes me wanna repaint my headboard!
paint colors?!
Ginny @ goofymonkeys says
The houndstooth is amazing.
how2home says
Woah! What a big difference! The makeover looks awesome! I’m totally obsessed with the stenciled wall. The colors and patterns are so bright and bold! Great transformation guys!

That is fantastic! Love the stencil and the dresser so much!
Jenni says
Woweee! So in love with that, the colours go so perfectly. Bold and beautiful!
Amy says
That stencil and that headboard together are awesome! I love the whole vibe of the room. Thanks for sharing!
Brandyn says
OMG that stencil made me forget for a min that I have sworn not to stencil again for at least a decade!
But my favorite is the shutter/door headboard. I want to copy the whole room!
