Even though we’ve been embracing a clean-lined and colorful aesthetic lately, we can definitely appreciate all sorts of styles. And we’ve still got a soft spot for the warm, layered neutrals that we filled our first house with. So when Rhoda sent over this redo of her sister Renee’s room, it was like a shot of wow to a part of our design brain that we hadn’t exercised in a while. And we kinda want to curl up in what looks like a SUPER comfortable bed. Here’s Rhoda’s letter:
Hi, Sherry & John! Just wanted to share my latest project: a redo of my sister’s bedroom suite. It’s a big space that had not been touched since 1999, so it was in dire need of an update.
Here’s the new view walking into the room now. That stenciled wall just makes it, I think! My sister and I worked on it together.
She has great taste and had already decided on the colors she wanted for the room, as well as the start to the fabrics. She just asked me for some help picking out the rest of the fabrics, rugs, artwork, accessories, lamps, and drapes. It was really fun to put our heads together.
She already had these nice wingback chairs, so instead of buying new, we opted to have them recovered by a local upholsterer and he did a great job.
We had so much fun putting this room together and I hope you love it as much as we do. My sister feels like she’s in a brand new place now. Thanks for the look! – xoxo, Rhoda
Isn’t it crazy to scroll up to that first shot and see how much it has changed? Rhoda’s got a ton of extra photos and info about the makeover on her blog, so head on over if you want to soak up some more. She even has a peek into the equally swanked up bathroom and sitting room over there. But while you’re here, let’s play the what’s-your-favorite-part game. I’m really digging the recovered chairs and Sherry’s all sorts of in love with that plush striped rug.
Wrenaria says
LOOOOOOOOOOOVE the rug. I wanna steal it! Great redesign!
Julia says
This is completely offtopic but I was on Imdb today and I realized that Sherry kinda sorta looks like Emilia Clarke from Game of Thrones in this picture: http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2039775488/nm3592338 So there’s your celebrity doppelganger if you ever need her.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, I get that a lot lately. I hear she’s naked a lot on the show which is kind of funny. I might look like her but I bet I’m naked on TV a lot less frequently. Haha.

LOVE the stenciled wall! I, too, bought a stencil from Royal Design Studio and used silver metallic paint on my master bedroom ‘feature’ wall: http://www.craftyteacherlady.blogspot.com/2011/08/brown-chicken-brown-cow.html
Looks like stencils are ‘in’!

I wanted to say how great it is that all the comments are nice! I don’t know if it’s our great moderators or that YHL readers are just nice people, but some other sites could learn a lesson from YHL- if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.
BTW, the room is very nice- my favorite is the chairs.
YoungHouseLove says
Not to jinx anything, but we haven’t not approved a comment for probably three months. You guys are just awesome. Best readers ever.

Very beautiful, I love the stenciling. The styling is great too- and I think all the neutrals are great for a calming master. Beautiful job Rhoda!
Kel says
Wow what a beautiful inviting and relaxing space. I have major bedroom envy!
The chair and bed side tables are my fave. I just want to curl up in the chair and read a book and jump onto the plush bed.

Glam is right! This looks soothing and lovely.

LOOOVE it! I wonder where that sunburst mirror came from. I want to snag one for myself.
Karen says
I am totally digging the painted stencil. I am about 98% percent sure I want to do one in our bedroom. Great job Rhoda! And thank you for the new blog to follow. :)
Anna says
Love it!!!
Sarah says
The stencil is definitely my favorite part. Great look!
Erika says
Wow…I’m not usually a fan of neutrals, but that is lovely!
I’m a little jealous of that spacious, well designed master suite :) What a wonderful place to relax after a long day.
Darcy says
WOW! Favorite part — that stencil and that gorgeous CEILING!!
Tessa says
YIKES! I selected subscribe to “replies to my comments” – but now I’m getting emails on all replies to everyone’s comments!
YoungHouseLove says
Hmm, I would unsubscribe and then try resubscribing! There are two options (just to “replies to your comment” and “replies to all comments”). We wish we could actually remove the latter option since it has got to be crazy annoying, but it’s a plug in so we can’t. Boo. But maybe it was just a subscription glitch that you’re getting every reply instead of just replies on yours? So if you undo it and redo it things might work. Hope it helps!

We’re loving stencils and neutral colors in this household right now, too. Stickin’ with the base colors picked out by the previous owner, and adding our own touches and color when we can. Thanks for this post because sometimes we wonder if we should just start over with WHITE! Love what they did.
Nellie says
simply gorgeous and relaxing!

I’m absolutely with you on the git ‘er done mission. I stumbled on your blog several weeks ago when looking for DIY nursery ideas and wound up living here. I love your quirky family and your great DIY projects. Now I’ve started working on all the things I’ve wanted to do to our house since we moved in (3 years ago). I’m not sure how much I’ll finish before the baby is here (March 26ish) but my #1 goal is for everything to have its own place (sound familiar?) Thank you so much for your helpful and inspiring blog!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw you’re welcome Maranda! And congrats on the March bun! I’m a March 19th baby, so I predict yours will come on my b-day. Because that’s pretty much always my prediction for anyone within two weeks of it. Haha. I have yet to be right.

Huge transformation! lOVE LOVE the stenciled wall and smart to have her chairs reupholstered professionally instead of throwing them out.

Lovely but hardly dire.
Dire is hunger and poverty, not interior decoration.

We are all the way from South Africa.
My husband and I are very similar to you and John.
We have just bought a house and started re-doing to make it more like home on a very limited budget. I didn’t even know about your blog until i started my own :)
You guys are cool – its comforting knowing we are not the only ones just diving straight into things we have never done before and figuring it our as we along, thus adding to our ever growing list of things we rock at :)
Check out my blog… and let me know what you think :)

Oh I love this! Well done to them!
At first I thought the first photo was the “after” photo (what the?!!) but then I scrolled down… and it’s gorgeous. So plush and inviting!
Carissa says
I love these “big” redesigns… but my entire kitchen/living room/dining room could fit into that persons bedroom! I’d really love to see more “yeah… I live in a 300-500 sq. ft. apartment/condo” designs and tips. I’ve just downgraded from a cushy 2 bedroom 2 bath apartment to a 1 bedroom 1 bath (that makes NO SENSE design-wise). Trying to make it efficient yet industrial-modern has been an intense challenge (how do you make a futon for a couch actually look good, but still have it be functional for guests?).
YoungHouseLove says
We try to share redesigns of all types! The one from last week was a fun way to makeover a duvet cover (great for any space- big or small!) and this one a few weeks before that has great art/furniture/ceiling/lighting ideas for a room of any size (it’s an entryway makeover, so it shows how all those things can be amped up in a small area). Hope it helps!

I’m a sucker for intricate, curvy lines and patterns. Which is to say that the lamp bases, bedding, and silver stenciling on the wall make me swoon! Very smart combo of neutral, earthy tones (good security color, also the light tone helps make the room feel bigger and airy) with those exciting patterns!
