Just as we mentioned last week, Reader Redesigns are back y’all!! And we’re kicking things off with Michelle’s amazing bathroom renovation. She and her husband David gutted the crazy yellow bathroom, completely reconfigured the layout, and built it back up in beautiful greys and fresh sparkling whites. Here’s her letter:
Hi Sherry & John! Your bathroom at your first house sparked me and my hubs to renovate our 1952 en-suite bathroom. We followed soooo many of your tips (we ran into all of the same demolition problems, including the wire mesh). It was no bueno! But thank goodness all of the hard work is done. I shared the big final reveal of the bathroom here on my blog Ten June, and you can also look back at the entire renovation here. Anyways, I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your insight! So excited that Reader Redesigns have returned! -Michelle
Um, it’s insane. Seriously, it doesn’t even look like the same room. Just check out these before pics:
And now for the holy-cow-that’s-amazing afters:
Not only is that shower – ahem – double shower awesome because it sits where the toilet and bathtub formerly were, but it also has these killer hex tiles….
…which Michelle and David smartly echoed as details elsewhere in the shower.
Sherry and I may or may not have gone nuts over that tile. And everything from the soft gray vanity to the glittering angled mirrors have us in a gorgeous-bathroom-induced haze. As Michelle said, there are more before, during, and after pics on her blog: Ten June (namely, here and here). Thanks for sharing your awesome project with us Michelle!
Got your own awesome before & after project? Send your story, pics, and related links to [email protected] to be considered for a possible Reader Redesign feature. You know we love any and all design eye candy!

Yay for bringing back reader redesigns! I love seeing all the amazing work that readers have done. Nothing like a good before/after to get you motivated to work on your own pad. My butt…officially off the couch…onto painting. Thanks for sharing!

My hubs just finished demo-ing our pink tile 1950s master bath…hello wire mesh and concrete! Over the weekend I went to Pinterest for inspiration, and came across Michelle’s redo and pinned that killer gray vanity! Love the before and afters!

I just love this blog so much. Thank you for the continuous excellent posts. We have so much to learn from YHL.

this is incredible.
our new house has a grey shower stall/tub, and gray toilet. along with greyish ceramic tile. the cabinetry is your typical fake oak, with a blueish countertop and old, outdated faucets and a plain white scuzzy sink. it’s also the smallest bathroom in the world. but i’d LOVE to do something to it. it’s so tiny that i think it would be cute. the walls are currently blue. it’s sort of blue and grey overload in there. i’m just having a hard time imagining something else that goes with the grey toilet/shower/tub.
ashlee says
also, i wanted to mention, remember in one of your last posts that you asked what people have learned about houses and blogging? use what you have. don’t rush out to buy things when you have perfectly decent items at home that can be repurposed. that’s my lesson for the day :)

Those tiles in the shower are lovely! I bet they’d feel great under your feet!

Like some of the other commentors I too love the before- nearly more than the after, even though the after is great.
But I can very much see that you would tire of that yellow bonanza. And there is only so much scrubbing you can do in an old bathroom, they inevitably end up dingy after 50 or so years. Still, I think it says something for the quality that it has held up that well.

Oh. My. Heavens. Think they’ll mind if I move in with them?

Now, that is one sexy shower :-)

Beautiful redo…we redid two 1950’s all-tile baths…when we sold that house, it sold in one day for the asking price AND two backups! There is nothing like a sparkling new bath!
Elisa @ The Self Life says
Those hex tiles are DELICIOUS.
Beckie says
Wow, that is straight up impressive! Talk about a transformation. Thanks for sharing it!

What a beautiful bathroom. Love the tile they used!
Maureen @ The Parkland Project says
That bathroom style had to be crazy popular since our’s was like that as well!

The new bath looks really good, BUT I have to admit I’m in the ‘would’ve kept the yellow tile’ camp on this one! I could totally see keeping the yellow tile/tub while reworking the massive vanity cabinets and huge mirrors. In fact I’d kill for that awesome vintage yellow tile/tub in our master bath (instead of the 1970 blah white tile w/ gold flecks)! Guess that’s what makes the world go ’round (and home improvement stores in business!) though, if we all had the same tastes what a boring world this would be :)
Either way, I always love seeing before/afters so I am super pumped that Reader Redesign is back, thank you!!

This bathroom really is amazing!! It made all the difference to rearrange the toilet and shower. I wish this bathroom was in my house!
Natalia says
Good job. I need something like that done with my bathroom.

Wow! I am in LOVE with this bathroom redesign. I have the same exact mustard yellow tiles in my 1959 bathroom and dream about redoing it every day (maybe 10 times a day to be honest). Thanks for this inspiration!

This bathroom reno is absolutely GORGEOUS!!! WOWeee wow!!!
We are about to redo our early 1960s bathroom in mid-October. We, like in your old bathroom, have a cast iron tub that we will leave in place (it has already been refinished). But I am so worried about what is behind that tile! We know it’s leaking (into the kitchen below), so we are a little worried. Is there mold? Wire mesh? Oh, the adventure!
Anna says
I LOVE to see these transformations. Its so inspiring :) We have two bathrooms we need to redo. House built in 1980 and they’re both original. We have white bathtubs/toilets but YELLOW counters! And some really weird recessed brown/yellow lighting thing going on.
Anne F says
Hi – do you know the source of the vanity?
