Before getting to the Reader Redesign goods, we have a quick Burger-related story. Yesterday was a very scary day for us. Burger was sitting on Sherry’s lap and Clara and I came home and Burger was so excited to see us that he jumped off her lap (as he’s done a million times before) and somehow lost his balance and flipped in the air and landed on the floor on his back and neck. He yelped and Sherry scooped him up to see if he was ok but he shook his head and acted fine. So we put him on the floor but he couldn’t walk. He had no balance and walked into the walls and wouldn’t put weight on either of his hind legs and kept falling over.
While rushing to get everyone in the car to get him to the vet, Sherry called them to tell them we were coming and while she was on the phone Burger had what we think was a small seizure (he was very rigid and his eyes were open but he wasn’t focusing on anything and he was shaking violently). It stopped after about twenty seconds and by the time we got to the vet he was acting completely normal. He could walk and all of his vitals checked out. They think the stumbling and loss of balance along with the possible seizure was from the shock of the impact but he restored all function and checked out all of their many tests so we’re just so thankful he’s ok. They said we had to watch him for the next 24 hours for any signs that something’s off, and we’re still a few hours shy of that mark but he’s acting just like his old self and is jumping and running around (as hyper as ever, haha). Whew. He scared the heck out of us, but we’re all so thankful he’s ok.
But back to the reader redesign! Now that we’re shifting from kitchen to bathroom brain, it should come as no surprise that we’re gravitating towards the bathroom makeovers popping up in our inbox these day. And we’re especially charmed by ones like Michelle’s – because it (like ours) isn’t a total gut job. Instead, it’s just a few manageable updates that go a long way. And for Michelle, those big impact changes are paint, pattern, and molding (I was this close to an alliteration there). Check out her note below.
As fellow stenciling survivors, I thought you might enjoy our powder room make-over!
We added some moldings and used the Nova Trellis stencil from Royal Design studios to transform our boring powder room into a quirky new space!
The white is Ultra White by Valspar. The black is Black Leather by Dutch Boy.
We still need to add crown molding and wall art. I might also switch out the mirror and window treatment. This room is a little bolder than my usual conservative style but I’m digging it! – Michelle
We are too, Michelle. Thanks for sending the pictures our way. We love a bold pattern in a small space like a bathroom (rooms like that will never look giant anyway, so embracing them and turning them into something special is such a great call). It really wakes up the room in a nice way. And the molding and trim adds tons of style too. To read more about this project, visit Michelle’s blog. But first let’s hear what you like best. Is it the crisp white molding? The rich wood floors? The pedestal sink? Or the brave stencil job?
Brittnee L says
So glad burger is okay. I was terrified reading that story . I hope he turns out fine. I would do anything for my yorkie poo. Burger looks like such a distinguished pup in that plaid bandana (scarf?)
Kristen @ Popcorn on the Stove says
First things first – I’m so glad Burger is okay! Our family dog has seizures every so often and it’s so scary. The best thing we’ve done is to just hold him while it’s going on and comfort him to calm him down. We could put him on medication but it would kind of make him act like he had a lobotomy (and to be honest, that wouldn’t be a good life since the seizures aren’t very often.
With that said – I love Michelle’s bathroom. The stenciling is amazing!
Nikki Fein says
Poor Burger, that story had me in tears. We just recently lost our two Jack Russells somewhat sudden and the little girl suffered a few seizures in her lifetime. Still don’t know if she got them from a tumble, falling down stairs or off the bed, or she fell because of the seizures. They are no fun and I’m so glad Burger is doing good. It always took ours a good day to get back to normal ( well, semi-normal, she was a Jack Russell still) so please give Burger a good rub from us.
YoungHouseLove says
Will do, Nikki! So sorry to hear about your pups. We know what you mean about “semi-normal” too. :)

Emily Z says
Glad to hear Burger is okay!
My chihuahua Atticus is my whole world, and about a month ago he was tipping his head weirdly, walking into things, etc. I was terrified that it was seizures. My boyfriend to him to the vet who ended up giving him muscles relaxants and painkillers. Still not sure the cause, but I am guessing he just plays to hard with our other dog & the cats.
YoungHouseLove says
Happy to hear Atticus is fine – that’s a great name too!
-John
Krystle @ Color Transformed Family says
I am glad to hear that Burger is ok. I can’t imagine having a scare like that with my little yorkie.
I love this reader redesign. My favorite part is that she took a decent looking bathroom and decided to take it to the next level. Wow! The addition of the moulding and white paint makes it look very high end.
Corinne says
Poor Burger! Glad he’s okay! My Min Pin sometimes jumps and misses, but she usually lands in some odd manner. She’s never had a seizure from it, but I sure hope that never happens. She has been known to limp and look sad for me though, which just prompts extra treats and belly rubs :)
The dog I had growing up actually suffered from epilepsy. She would have seizures during the day while we were all out of the house, so we didn’t catch on for a long time. It wasn’t until the dog had a seizure when I was home alone (I was about 10 or 11 at the time) that my mom finally took her to the vet to find out what was wrong. I actually go to that exact same vet now for my Min Pin! It was always scary, but the dog never had another seizure after that.
YoungHouseLove says
Yeah, for a moment we thought Burger was doing his “I want sympathy” limp that he sometimes does if he lands on his leg weird or steps on something funny. That’s usually cured quickly with a treat. :)
-John
Natalia says
It’s weird cuz today when I was watching Clara’s video I thought about how it’s been a while since we saw pics or a video of Burger and was even about to post a comment asking about him. I am so glad he’s ok! Poor little guy! Please post some pictures of Burger soon…napping, running around, trying to sneak into a picture that you’re taking of something else (you know, just being himself) :) Or maybe even a video!!
YoungHouseLove says
Don’t worry, he’ll make an appearance soon. :)
-John
Erin says
Thank the lord he’s ok! Our 2 cats have put us through a couple of emergency situations in the last year, and it feels much the same as an emergency with any other less fuzzy members of the family. Sending kisses and hugs Burger’s way!
The Mrs @ Success Along the Weigh says
Poor Burger! I’m so glad he’s okay. We went through a seizure with our little nugget once and it was terrifying. So glad he seems to be well!
Julie says
Burger is the cutest!! So glad he’s okay.
mary says
Glad Burger is better!! Love the powder room. I’m seeing a black and white toile roman shade for the window and the mirror frame painted a bright corally red color (or whatever bright color is found in the other rooms of the house)
Christine says
Eek – so scary, Burger! Glad he’s back to his old self. A few months ago, one of my two dogs did not greet me at the door when I came home from work – and didn’t come downstairs when I called for her. Turns out she was feeling achy and was stranded on the bed. She likes to jump straight up in the air (sproinging, as I call it), and she sprained her sproinger :( She’s fine, but I’ll never forget that scary feeling.
YoungHouseLove says
Ha! Sorry, I had to laugh at “sproinger.” Glad she’s okay!
-John
Bethany @ More Fruit Please says
Glad to hear that Burger is acting more like his old self! What a scare! A few months ago, I thought that my pup was having a seziure after receiving a bite from a larger dog. He couldn’t walk, was shaking violently, and his eyes were locked forward. After a few minutes of soothing pets, he seemed completely fine. I don’t know if it was really a seizure or just the shock from a scary experience. Thank goodness dogs seem to bounce back so quickly!
YoungHouseLove says
Agreed! Thanks goodness!
-John
Erin says
Gosh – I think this is the week for Dog’s to scare the heck out of their owners.
On Monday, I was watching The Voice when my 9 year-old chocolate lab, Dylan started to frantically lick the roof of his mouth like peanut butter was stuck to it. So I refilled his bowl with fresh water but he wanted nothing to do with it. He wanted to go outside. So I followed him to the backyard thinking he had to go to the bathroom really bad but instead he started to chow down on grass like I have never seen him do before. Five min later, got worried he was eating too much grass so I called him to come inside and he just kept chowing down. Finally I tricked him to come inside and he was fine. It was the strangest thing ever.
Bethenny Frankle’s dog Cookie has also been ill this week too.
Keeping Burger in my prayers that he makes a full recovery. How frightening for you guys!?
I am going to squeeze my dog extra tight tonight.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh my, there must be something in the air this week! Glad to hear nothing came of Dylan’s grass eating. Let’s hope he, Cookie and Burger give us an easier week next week!
-John
Lani says
the SAME thing happened to my pup not too long ago (a month maybe?). She ended up slipping a disk in her back and had minimal use of her back legs. Really scary…i know exactly how you feel! She still can’t run like she used to without falling over…but she’s MUCH better. Glad he’s ok…and great reader re-design
YoungHouseLove says
Oh, glad to hear yours has recovered so well!
-John
Darcy says
I had a lump in my throat reading that — Thank goodness Burger is ok — SOOO scary!! But I hope you are telling him about all of us readers that care so much about him!! He is one very loved little dog!!
OK — focus, the Reader Re-design –AMAZING! I can’t pick what I love best, cause its all so beautiful!! I LOVE that stencil, and the black and white is just yummy, and then the molding is just sexy (that is weird in reference to a bathroom, but its really true in this case)!!!
Brava Michelle, and a Golf Clap too!
Erin @ His & Hers says
It’s fitting that you mentioned Burger with Michelle’s bathroom, because she is a dog lady herself! Glad Burger is okay. I’ve loved that stenciling ever since Michelle first revealed it!!
Candice says
I’m glad Burger’s ok! That certainly does sound scary. And about the bathroom, I also liked the before better. I guess my style is out of date. Nonetheless, I wonder if they know the “before” paint color. I’m in the middle of a major reno myself.
jenn says
Oh my goodness! So scary. Poor baby. I know my Yorkie Maddie once jumped off the sofa and landed wrong. She would not turn her neck and all and kept whining. She had twisted her neck and had to be on painkillers. So not fun when they’re hurting. Hope he’s 100% very, very soon.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh my, poor Maddie! Glad she recovered okay.
-John
Debbie @ My Little Mess says
I’m sooo glad Burger is ok!! Give him a big hug for me!
I know how scary those moments can be when your pet gets hurt. I have had some emergency vet visits before (once when one dog got hit by a semi-truck and survived with very minor injuries and again when my other dog cut her back pretty bad while running under our trailer and I thought she hurt her spine, but she just needed stitches) and it seems like the world is about to end in those moments. Then they bounce right back like nothing even happened and all is right in the world!
YoungHouseLove says
Yep, thank goodness they’re troopers when it comes to recoveries! Sorry to hear you’ve had a couple of scares yourself.
-John
Jen says
Poor Burger! I have a 3 year old Beagle and he is my best bud. I know how much dogs mean to us so I am so thankful Burger is okay!
Allison says
So glad Burger is OK! Count down those minutes until you’re free and clear at 24 hours. Remember watching my beloved kitty go into diabetic shock one night, and it was the SCARIEST trying to figure out what was happening and rushing him to the animal hospital. I’m so glad to hear that Burger is feeling more like himself.
YoungHouseLove says
Hope your cat turned out okay! Isn’t it so scary with pets because they can’t tell you what’s up?
-John
Carol N. says
I was just thinking about Burger yesterday! So glad to hear he is back to normal. And love the stencil in the bathroom! This is a keeper of an idea.
Rebecca says
Scariest post EVER! Major snuggles to Burger, and would love to hear a few updates that he’s continuing to feel peppy. Love that guy.
Also, Michelle, very cool bathroom. Really love this although, I’d never have had the guts to do it. Well done!
Amanda says
So glad Burger is ok! I was so worried about him, I only skimmed the redesign piece!
My mom knew a dog who got hit by a car – on the way to the vet, she did TTouch on him (http://www.ttouch.com/) which is basically little circles that go from six AM to nine PM on a clock face all over his body. It kept him from going into shock, and the vet said it saved his life.
I do the “circles” on my chihuahua whenever there’s a thunderstorm as well, and they help keep her relaxed.
Rescue Remedy can also help (http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/Bach-Rescue-Remedy-Flower-Essences/238000.aspx?click=5&9gtype=search&9gkw=Rescue%20Remedy&9gad=9515569379&gclid=CIuuoeO8nq8CFQjd4AodzHgKZw) in situations like these – just a couple of drops on their gums will keep them relaxed.
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks for those tips. Very interesting! Burger fares pretty well during thunderstorms, but I’m sure a little extra comfort wouldn’t hurt though.
-John
Sarah says
Goodness, I am so glad Burger is okay! I was getting worried just reading the entry. I had to skip to the end to make sure he was okay then go back and read it!
Beautiful bathroom b-t-dubs!
Emma says
Poor Bergs! I’m happy to hear he’s doign well. Please give him my best. That bathroom is super cute too. Just not as cute as Senior Berger.
Liz Chaisson Thompson says
Thank goodness! It’s so frightening when our furry family members are hurt, isn’t it? They’re such important parts of our world.
LauraC says
Ugh, tears in my eyes reading about such a scary thing, and then everybody’s comments too. So thankful Burger’s ok now, and off to squeeze our Mocha tight…
Christina says
Sorry to hear about Burger :(
My Shiba Inu (looks like a little husky) had a seizure last summer. He had just turned 2, and they think it was either a heat-induced seizure (it was VERY hot out, and he wasn’t interested in drinking much water), or something called an Addison’s Episode or an Addison’s Crisis. Has to do with the inability to manage stress. Anyway, he recovered before we even got him to the vet’s as well, but they ran tons of tests and everything checked out. Scary stuff!
But back to the main topic… awesome bathroom! And glad Burger is okay!
YoungHouseLove says
Interesting about the Addison’s Episode. Glad to know about those too in case Burger decides to make our lives interesting again down the road.

Angela N says
So scary!! Glad Burger is doing well. Love the bathroom! Especially the molding! Amazing how such a simple project transforms the whole space.
Suzanne says
Beautiful bathrooms!
Woah can I relate to your Burger story. It was one year ago yesterday that our adorable & cocky dachshund found himself in quite a pickle. And by pickle I mean we were moseying along on an evening walk and a neighbor’s dog got out and bit him so severely his lung punctured and was hanging out of his body. How’s that for fun? It was a scary moment, but with the help of speedy driving & some wonderful vets he was able to fully recover.
So glad Burger is ok!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh my goodness – that is TERRIFYING. My cat got run over by a car (literally) growing up and it punctured his lung… but it wasn’t hanging out. So glad to hear you had a good turn out. We did too with my cat, though my sisters have “fond” memories of staying up all night to make sure he didn’t stop breathing.
-John
Sarah says
1) Oh, Burger Bear! So relieved he’s okay! What a scary situation for you guys– glad you all made it through.
2) What a super rad bathroom! I love the stencil. My boyfriend loves his video games and I think the pixellated design would be a perfect style choice. I’m definitely bookmarking it for the future.
Julia Leist Adams says
Love the bathroom! Beautiful! But I’m so glad that Burger is alright!
Kelly says
Glad he’s okay. Yikes! That sounded scary.
I love what they’ve done with this bathroom. Gives me hope for mine.
Jenn M. says
Oh MY! I am so glad Burger is okay. I was thinking about him this week and wondering where he has been.I hope he continues to be okay. Are you giving him lots of extra hugs and treats and giving him the royal treatment? Please do a full post on Burger!!! Read ALL about it…….. It’s BURGER Time!
YoungHouseLove says
It is Burger time! We’ll have to get something ready for Young House Life (though I did snap some pics of him the other day that I still have to upload). Soon!

Karin K says
Poor Burgs! Having owned dachshunds all my life, I am no stranger to everything you’ve described, especially “all of their many tests”, followed in short order by “all of their many fees”. If only we could DIY the veterinary care…… I’m so glad he recovered right away! Keep an eye on him, or he’ll end up on the wrong side of a pack-n-play. Trust me on this… :) OK…back to the rest of your post.
Mindy@FSLblog says
Um this is a rare moment where I feel cool. Michelle is my blog buddy! YAY! I’m so excited you guys featured her! She’s super talented and her blog is really funny. That stencil project seemed like torture, but nothing great ever comes easy right?! YAY! LOL I’m so happy for her. Your blog is like a Mecca for D-I-Y home-y blogs. Glad to see one of us “baby bloggers” got to shine :)

Aww, glad Burger’s feeling better.
When I was growing up, we had a teacup poodle who had diabetes. She had to have an insulin shot every morning and would have seizures when her blood sugar was out of wack. Then, we’d have to hold a saucer of karo syrup by her mouth and let her lap it up (she knew it helped her) until her seizure stopped. She lived many years with diabetes (even being studied by a vet school because she lived so long with it) and was a happy pup, but eventually had to be put to sleep when her seizures became more frequent and she had no real quality of life left. I’m just glad we were able to keep her relatively healthy and happy for so long.
YoungHouseLove says
Aw, she sounds like such a sweet girl! So sorry for your loss Melanie!

It makes me really sad to tell you this, but when I was a teenager my parents Pomeranian, Pookie, was sitting in my friend’s lap in the kitchen and tried to jump off her lap but landed on his head and just froze up, same with Burger, he had a seizure on the way to the vet and then a day later and then a week later. After the 3rd one, the vet officially diagnosed him with epilepsy and he was given a daily pill to help manage it. For the most part it worked, but he would still have them about once a month or so. For Burger’s sake, I’m really glad you guys can stay home with him and keep an eye on it. I really hope it was just a onetime thing!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh no, that’s so sad! We are definitely keeping an eye on Burger and still holding our breath!

So glad to hear Burger is okay. We sure love our fur babies alot, huh? LOVE this bathroom re-design. Psyched to see the molding on the walls because we are having this conversation at my house. We have a bathroom that could use a sprucing up since we are 10 years into what was a big reno in that room. I want to do something like this on the walls but my Mr. is hesitant. He likes the look but worried about moisture since it is a full bath and not just a powder room. I would like to know if it is real wood or MDF and also is the floor real wood, laminate or that vinyl that is so convincingly real looking wood?
YoungHouseLove says
Here’s hoping she drops in to answer that question for ya!

Thanks to everyone for the super nice comments!
The trim pieces are real wood. The flat pieces on the top are MDF. Here’s a little more info on the moldings we used…

Our floors are real wood. Brazilian cherry. I’m still madly in love with them.

Hope he feels better. Sounds like just a jolt to the system and he was in shock, had an Italian Greyhound to the same exact thing. He was fine after a little while but its still good to get things like that checked. Bathroom looks wonderful. What is the next project?
YoungHouseLove says
So glad your greyhound was ok! Although we still have some bathroom stuff to attend to, we have some outdoor projects on the agenda along with some other inside ones. Basically we’re all over the place as usual!

Glad Burger seems to be doing good! We have a Sheltie who had what appeared to be a seizure a few years ago (no shaking, but had no balance right after waking up). By the time we got him to the vet, he was perfectly fine (the longer he walked, the better he got). We think it might have been caused by him bumping his head into our upright piano. Its been around 4 or 5 years since, and no seizures since either.
YoungHouseLove says
So glad he has been ok since!

I adore that bathroom makeover! I actually have it pinned on pinterest.
As for Burger, that is SOOOO scary, and I am soooo glad he is okay! I would have been in tears and barely able to even call the vet. It was just over a year ago that one of my kitties was fine one second and the next was having a seizure or something (I don’t really know what it was that happened) but he didn’t make it. And it all happened so fast and was just such a shock. So, again, I am so so glad to hear Burger is fine!!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh Lindsay I’m so sorry! That must have been awful. Burger sends you a big face lick to hopefully make you smile.
