Before getting to the Reader Redesign goods, we have a quick Burger-related story. Yesterday was a very scary day for us. Burger was sitting on Sherry’s lap and Clara and I came home and Burger was so excited to see us that he jumped off her lap (as he’s done a million times before) and somehow lost his balance and flipped in the air and landed on the floor on his back and neck. He yelped and Sherry scooped him up to see if he was ok but he shook his head and acted fine. So we put him on the floor but he couldn’t walk. He had no balance and walked into the walls and wouldn’t put weight on either of his hind legs and kept falling over.
While rushing to get everyone in the car to get him to the vet, Sherry called them to tell them we were coming and while she was on the phone Burger had what we think was a small seizure (he was very rigid and his eyes were open but he wasn’t focusing on anything and he was shaking violently). It stopped after about twenty seconds and by the time we got to the vet he was acting completely normal. He could walk and all of his vitals checked out. They think the stumbling and loss of balance along with the possible seizure was from the shock of the impact but he restored all function and checked out all of their many tests so we’re just so thankful he’s ok. They said we had to watch him for the next 24 hours for any signs that something’s off, and we’re still a few hours shy of that mark but he’s acting just like his old self and is jumping and running around (as hyper as ever, haha). Whew. He scared the heck out of us, but we’re all so thankful he’s ok.
But back to the reader redesign! Now that we’re shifting from kitchen to bathroom brain, it should come as no surprise that we’re gravitating towards the bathroom makeovers popping up in our inbox these day. And we’re especially charmed by ones like Michelle’s – because it (like ours) isn’t a total gut job. Instead, it’s just a few manageable updates that go a long way. And for Michelle, those big impact changes are paint, pattern, and molding (I was this close to an alliteration there). Check out her note below.
As fellow stenciling survivors, I thought you might enjoy our powder room make-over!
We added some moldings and used the Nova Trellis stencil from Royal Design studios to transform our boring powder room into a quirky new space!
The white is Ultra White by Valspar. The black is Black Leather by Dutch Boy.
We still need to add crown molding and wall art. I might also switch out the mirror and window treatment. This room is a little bolder than my usual conservative style but I’m digging it! – Michelle
We are too, Michelle. Thanks for sending the pictures our way. We love a bold pattern in a small space like a bathroom (rooms like that will never look giant anyway, so embracing them and turning them into something special is such a great call). It really wakes up the room in a nice way. And the molding and trim adds tons of style too. To read more about this project, visit Michelle’s blog. But first let’s hear what you like best. Is it the crisp white molding? The rich wood floors? The pedestal sink? Or the brave stencil job?

Gah! I would have FREAKED if Ladmo or Mona pulled something like that! (though we did have the great disaster of 2009 when after nuetering, Ladmo almost disembowled himself…$1,000 later all was well in the world ::shudders::)
Love the bathroom. Theirs and yours is coming along great! I Dig the aqua!

Oh no, poor Ladmo! So glad he’s ok!

My stomach is all knotted up, thank goodness Burger is ok. Those things are so super scary. As for the bathroom-gorgeous! Love it!
Susan says
I know that must have scared you to death! So glad he is doing fine and hopefully that will never happen again.
Kristen @ LoveK says
That bathroom is gorgeous! So bold and rich looking.
Glad Burger is feeling better!

Oh my gosh!!! So glad Burger is feeling better!! We had the same thing happen a few years ago when my puppy was only a few weeks old. She jumped right out of my arms & landed across a brick step on her back. Hopefully it helps to hear she is now 2 years old and couldn’t be healthier! Best wishes Burger!!!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Ashleigh! So glad your little pup is ok too!

I’m so glad to hear Mr. Burger is okay. Sick pets are so sad!

Oh man, those intense moments when something time sensitive and (possibly, who knows) life threatening are happening are the WORST! Once I came home to find out that my 2 dogs and the cat all tagged teamed and knocked a bottle of canine pain pills off the counter and then proceeded to knaw off the cover ingest them all. I didn’t know who did what and was trying to get all dogs and the cat (who happen to jump into the wood burning stove that existed before we gutted our house and was covered in soot! blame it on the meds…) into the car…THEN hit every red light and found ever school bus along the way, all why expecting all of them to start violently vomiting and seizing any second. Of course, none of that happen and they just had bloody gums from chewing the bottle :/ Ugh. They all live to still make our lives insane, altho now we have 2 kids to keep it interesting too! Anyway SO HAPPY he is okay!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh man that must have been so scary! Glad everyone was ok!

Such a scary story! Glad to hear he’s doing better though!
And I love what the read did to her bathroom!
Bethley says
Yes, seizures are so hard and scary to watch. I had Bulldog with grand mal seizures and it was really hard. His were so frequent that he wound up on meds and eventually injections. He is no longer with us, but it wasn’t seizure-related. My vet says seizures are pretty common in dogs. I hope it was a one-time thing for Burger and for you guys!

Glad Burger is okay. It’s always so scary when a pup is hurt because they can’t tell you what’s wrong.
Jeremy says
Poor little Burger!! I am always in fear that my little Chihuahua is gonna get hurt, he seems to manage it from time to time, but if he did that, I would have lost it!! So glad to hear that he’s ok!!
And yes, the bathroom looks great!

Hugs to Burger.
Becky says
So happy Burger is ok! It is so scary when someone you love is in pain and you don’t know what to do. About a week ago our boxer boy was acting like he was hurt and he wouldn’t walk right or go up or down stairs. He is doing better but I was watching him like a hawk. People without pets may not understand but they are members of the family!
Kylie McCoy says
How scary! I’ve had crazy things happen with Remington (our lab/coonhound mix) and it’s so scary!
Glad to hear he’s feeling better!
Amanda S says
Oh MY!!!! How scary. Our Izzie-bean(taco-terrier) sends her love to Burger!!! Poor guy. Glad he is doing better!!!!
Brittney says
Our chihuahua, Lulu gave us the same scare. She jumped out of our parked U-haul(!) and had a seizure scaring us to death. She came out of it ok and the vet told us she would be fine. She’s had a couple of additional seizures but it’s always been when something “scary” has happened to her. Like dogs running up to her or something out of the ordinary. Our vet said they are stress-induced seizures but we shouldn’t be too concerned as long as she reacts normally after. Glad Burger is ok!
YoungHouseLove says
So glad she’s ok!

Our Chihuahua jumped out of our moving van, too! What’s up with that?! Luckily, ours didn’t have a seizure — she just pee’d herself out of terror! LOL

What a stressful day for you guys! I am relieved to hear that Burger is doing better.
Karen says
I’m so glad that Burger is OK! This past Thanksgiving we took our dog on an 8 hour car ride to my hubby’s grandparents. Since he is terrified of the car we had the vet prescribe a sedative. Everything was fine until I came home from work on Monday. He was acting funny, not walking up and down steps, not jumping up and yelping when I tried to pet him. He is a miniature dachshund and they are prone to back problems so I was terrified that he had slipped a disk or something and would need surgery. I called the vet, got the next appointment and asked my husband to come home from work. Meanwhile, I was 16 weeks pregnant and balling my eyes out! After hours of crying and a $200 x-ray we got the verdict: Our little guy was constipated! It took a week for things to “clear out”, but he is fine now, and we know not to give him any more sedatives!
I hope that Burger doesn’t try to do any more fancy gymnastics!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw, poor guy! Once Burger was “excited” for too long of a time and we had to take him to the vet for that. Talk about embarrassing.

This is my first time commenting but I wanted to share a similar experience that happened to my beagle.
She had jumped up on the window sill to see out (like she did all of the time, two paws on the sill and two on the ground) and something happened — she yelped, slipped off, and fell over. She then had the same experience that Burger did. She just went rigid and then started shaking all over. Our vet said the shaking came from anxiety over the entire experience. She was fine after that — she never had another issue at all and that was years and years ago. The only time she ever shook again was at vet visits (I’m sure it was white coat syndrome after her awful experience).
I’m glad Burger is ok. He’s so adorable — the whole family is adorable!

Poor Burger! I’m glad he’s OK, though! I love the stenciling in the bathroom. That’s a great technique to add a lot of drama to a small space. :)
Christine says
How horribly frightening…! I’m glad he’s back to his old self. We clearly are the parents of Burger’s twin brother, except ours has hair. We never understood the bed sheet destruction thing ours does (goes nuts on the bed, drilling his nose up and down the sheets and flipping over) until we saw video of your pooch doing the same. We think it’s a chihuahua thing. Ours gets out of control with the jumping, too, both in the way that you described Burger did yesterday and even jumping off our bed – we keep thinking the impact of him jumping down is tough on those tiny pencil legs. I’m glad yours is okay – thanks for the warning…we’ll keep a better eye on ours.
Trela says
Yikes! We have a husky who had several seizures at an emergency vet appointment a few years ago after he had nearly cut himself in half with a dog tie down. He is totally fine and nuts as ever. So scary though! Glad your little guy is ok too.

I have a chihuahua/miniature pinscher mix and he has seizures regularly. He had them for a year before they became worse and we put him medication. It’s frightening! I’m sorry it happened I feel your terror.
I didn’t realize it was a stencil until she said so. Whew. It looks so modern. It’s funny, because the before bathroom looks much like my in-law’s green downstairs bathroom that we stand to inherit, mmm, inspiration.

Aw, so sorry to hear about your little guy. Hope the medication is keeping him comfy!

I have been thinking about a black and white bathroom, so this gives me some great ideas! Thanks for posting.
Also, I am so so so glad that Burger is okay! Our pets are such important members of our families, and I love that you guys include him in your posts.

I’m not a dog person but I certainly feel sad when they get hurt, I hope he’s fully recovered and shows no other signs of trauma. As for the bathroom, I’m probably going to have to steal that idea.

I’m glad your pup is okay. One of ours started having seizures last summer anytime he gets over excited. We can’t take him for walks anymore and I’m so over protective of him now but we’re thankful that he’s okay-ish. It’s a terrifying experience. I hope Burger doesn’t have any lasting effects.
YoungHouseLove says
That sounds so scary Amanda! But so glad he’s ok!

I cried for Mr. Burger. That is scary stuff. Anytime my babies aren’t themselves I panic. I am so relieved for you guys that he is ok!!!
Burger’s sitatuion makes me think too…. I have a dog who weighs 102 pounds. If that happened to her how would i get her to the vet? Hmm. Time to make a plan.
Linda says
Oh, thank goodness Burger is ok – you all must have been frantic. Just a suggestion if not already made to other readers – even if you have a vet, please be sure you know who your e-vet is, and, more importantly, exactly how to get there. When you’re in tears yourself, well, even the best GPS may not be enough help. I got my e-vet from my vet – they have a good working relationship. And, yes I did do a dry run one weekend – and not a month later had to take my kitty during the middle of the night. All was well, but I remember being so happy I actually knew which turns to take, and exactly how long it would take me.
Will check out the bathroom later – just freaked out when I saw the note about Burger.
YoungHouseLove says
That’s a great tip Linda! We have one right near our house but didn’t have the number in our phone and definitely would have wanted to call them on the way if our vet wouldn’t take us, so we’ll add that number to our phone asap!

Poor Burger! I am glad that he’s okay, but that must have been scary. My cat Vincent hurt himself jumping off the sofa and his back legs weren’t working right. I think the vet diagnosed a bruised spine or slipped disc but he recovered. I, however, was bawling on the phone to my mother because I thought Vincent was going to die. It’s amazing how attached we can get to our pets.
P.S. Burger looks very handsome in that colorful scarf!

So glad Vincent was ok!

Glad Burger is okay. I have an Italian Greyhound and he had a similar accident. He’s a lap dog and jumped off my lap and hit his shoulder on the floor and fell. After checking him out for any possible broken bones he had a similar seizure. He’s 10 years old so it scared us. After lots of research and monitoring (of future seizures) we found out that Lil Bit hyperventilated from the shock of the fall and it caused his muscles to seize up. He bounced right back.
YoungHouseLove says
Whew. So glad he bounced right back!

Glad to hear Burger is ok. You know, that little guy makes me laugh when I need to laugh the most. My husband is not into blogs (not that it’s not manly or anything like that – John) but sometimes I’m reading your blog and I’ll call my husband over to watch a video of Burger and he too laughs and just loves all the personality that little guy has.
Thanks for sharing with us!

So, so scary about Burger! I’m so glad he seems to be a-okay now! When our wild chihuahua boy, Jasper, was a tiny three-pound puppy, he took a “giant” leap down our two front porch steps and landed crazily and yelped and then wouldn’t use one of his legs. Of course it was a weekend, so we rushed him to the $75-just-to-walk-in-the-door emergency vet. After waiting 15 minutes, he was walking normally again and acting like his crazy wild self and we felt like total fools. Those drama kings!

OMG, so sorry to hear about Burger! I know how scary that must’ve been — our Chihuahua pooch recently jumped OUT of our moving van’s driver-side window while it was slowly rolling through a gas station this last weekend. It was about an 8-9 foot fall and the sound she made hitting the pavement was so unnatural, I’ll never forget it! Amazingly (besides peeing herself and scaring us half-to-death) she came out unharmed! We kept an eye on her throughout the rest of our trip and she’s been fine since…. I guess those teeny things can take a punch! I hope Burger’s doing okay, too! :)

Whew! Thank goodness Burger is okay. Scary when things happen to our furry family members.
Burger reminds me of a little chihuahua that came to play one day when we were having some sewer work done on our pipes. The owner of the company brought his chihuahua and our little dog (who lived to almost 17 years) just loved him. They had so much fun that afternoon running around the yard like best friends. I even took a picture of them.
Give Burger a hug for us!

Love the reader re-design. The stenciling came out amazing. I’m way too nervous to tackle anything like that but give props to those who have the courage. So well done. The bathroom looks very upscale with the molding and the stenciling.
I hope Burger is ok – poor little doggy. I’m sure you guys were petrified. My cat once fell off the TV after too much catnip and I almost had a heart attack. I know they say that cats always land on their feet… well, not so much in his case. Thankfully he was ok and we had a good laugh about it but I was a little scared when he didn’t move for a few seconds after it happened. The cat went on to live a good long life though thankfully. Hopefully this was just a fluky thing and he’s ok. Keep watching him though. Once a dog or animal has a seizure it may happen again.
