Before getting to the Reader Redesign goods, we have a quick Burger-related story. Yesterday was a very scary day for us. Burger was sitting on Sherry’s lap and Clara and I came home and Burger was so excited to see us that he jumped off her lap (as he’s done a million times before) and somehow lost his balance and flipped in the air and landed on the floor on his back and neck. He yelped and Sherry scooped him up to see if he was ok but he shook his head and acted fine. So we put him on the floor but he couldn’t walk. He had no balance and walked into the walls and wouldn’t put weight on either of his hind legs and kept falling over.
While rushing to get everyone in the car to get him to the vet, Sherry called them to tell them we were coming and while she was on the phone Burger had what we think was a small seizure (he was very rigid and his eyes were open but he wasn’t focusing on anything and he was shaking violently). It stopped after about twenty seconds and by the time we got to the vet he was acting completely normal. He could walk and all of his vitals checked out. They think the stumbling and loss of balance along with the possible seizure was from the shock of the impact but he restored all function and checked out all of their many tests so we’re just so thankful he’s ok. They said we had to watch him for the next 24 hours for any signs that something’s off, and we’re still a few hours shy of that mark but he’s acting just like his old self and is jumping and running around (as hyper as ever, haha). Whew. He scared the heck out of us, but we’re all so thankful he’s ok.
But back to the reader redesign! Now that we’re shifting from kitchen to bathroom brain, it should come as no surprise that we’re gravitating towards the bathroom makeovers popping up in our inbox these day. And we’re especially charmed by ones like Michelle’s – because it (like ours) isn’t a total gut job. Instead, it’s just a few manageable updates that go a long way. And for Michelle, those big impact changes are paint, pattern, and molding (I was this close to an alliteration there). Check out her note below.
As fellow stenciling survivors, I thought you might enjoy our powder room make-over!
We added some moldings and used the Nova Trellis stencil from Royal Design studios to transform our boring powder room into a quirky new space!
The white is Ultra White by Valspar. The black is Black Leather by Dutch Boy.
We still need to add crown molding and wall art. I might also switch out the mirror and window treatment. This room is a little bolder than my usual conservative style but I’m digging it! – Michelle
We are too, Michelle. Thanks for sending the pictures our way. We love a bold pattern in a small space like a bathroom (rooms like that will never look giant anyway, so embracing them and turning them into something special is such a great call). It really wakes up the room in a nice way. And the molding and trim adds tons of style too. To read more about this project, visit Michelle’s blog. But first let’s hear what you like best. Is it the crisp white molding? The rich wood floors? The pedestal sink? Or the brave stencil job?

Thank you so much for the powder room love!! I’m afraid my poor little blog might blow up from the increased traffic. ;)
As a person who loves their dog more than most people love their human children, I’m glad that Burger is on the mend!
Seriously, thank you again for the feature!!

Aw, you’re welcome Michelle! Love your bathroom!

Yikes for Burger! His story kind of hijacked the Reader Redesign! My Pomeranian, Teddy Bear, had a seizure about a month or so ago at the off-leash dog park where I take him when it’s nice out. A couple of Labs chasing a ball didn’t see him (or he ran into their way to do his barking-bravado thing), and they cold-clocked him, I think. He seized up just like you said Burger did – stiff body, unblinking eyes, panting, non-responsive to verbal stimulus. But he never lost control of bodily function, and came out of it on his own. My BFF worked at a vet’s hospital, so I talked with her initially (told me what to watch for), then called the vet the next day. Since he was OK, they said just to keep an eye on him, and keep him calm/quiet for the next few days. He’s been perfectly fine since – thankfully!
YoungHouseLove says
So scary! Poor Teddy Bear! Glad he was ok!

Jeez louise you brought tears to my eyes with your Burger scare. I have three kitties so I know how scared I’d be if something like that happened to one of them. I’m glad he is back to normal!

When our rambunctious English Setter, Patch, was 11 he was being crazy in the back yard and jumped over some random bush (not an unusual occurance) but he landed wrong and broke his back the had a mini seizure from the shock we assumed. Long story short, we nursed him back to health over the next few months and he ended up living to the grand old age of 17!! We send good thoughts Burger’s way. ;)
The makeover is great and my favorite element is most definitely the moldings…. so rich and sophisticated!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh my gosh, poor Patch! He sounds like a little champion! So glad you nursed him back to health!

Lovely bathroom redo!
We had a dog who got bit by a rattlesnake and had seizures intermittently for years afterwards. She was fine every time but it was scary every time it would happen! We would just give her lots of petting and treats afterwards and she was happy as a lark.
YoungHouseLove says
Aw, so glad she was fine and you spoiled her afterwards!

Poor Burger!! I’m so glad he’s ok. My pup had a seizure last fall, we think it was a reaction to a medication he was taking for a skin infection. It was terrifying. Then the vet gave us a prescription for Valium, which was supposed to reduce the likelihood of a second seizure during the next couple of days. Instead, it just made him high as a kite, and he kept wandering around the house all night and getting stuck every time he climbed on a piece of furniture. But (knock on wood!) no seizures since then.
Oh, and that bathroom is amazing. I am a sucker for a black and white bathroom. :-)
YoungHouseLove says
Poor pup! So glad no more seizures!

So sorry to hear about Burger. Our dog developed epilepsy when he was 3. It was scary- some of his seizures were similar to what you described, some were more violent. The important thing is that once he was medicated (which you only do if a dog has seizures regularly), he never had another seizure. Yay for happy endings.
On another note, I am happy when people take risks with design like bold patterns. Do what makes you happy!
YoungHouseLove says
So glad your dog is ok and seizure free! Hooray for happy endings indeed!

I’m so happy Burger is okay! My parents have a teacup chihuahua who went through a similar experience (She nose dived from the couch into the coffee table shockingly hard) and ended up being just fine. I know you’re keeping a close watch on him! Feel better, Burgsie!

Oh no! So glad she’s ok!

So sorry to hear about Burger! I hope that he is feeling better… please send a few extra treats his way (care of our two crazy pups Amy and Luke). Thinking of you Burg!

Mmm, thanks for the treats! (licks lips appreciatively)

That story and the picture of Burger made me well up. It’s obvious how much you love him. He’s a lucky boy. So glad he is doing better. I’m always afraid of our chi-chi (Oscar) getting hurt. His little bones are so tiny and fragile looking and he darts around everywhere and jumps up and down all the time. I keep thinking of the vet bills when he gets older from all the jumping off the bed and sofa, I just know his hips and ‘knees’ (i guess he has ‘knees’, lol) are taking a beating. I also have a crazy, headstrong, annoying Yorkie that I love in spite of herself, for 8 years now.
That bathroom is amazing! A pop of color would be spot on.

the bottom paneling stuff is cool, but I like the before better. Too much white now.

So glad to hear Burger is ok. We just recently had to put down our 17 year old Peek-a-poo. (pekinese/poodle)So we know how much you love your doggie.

I’m so sorry to hear about your undoubtedly very scary incident with Burger. ….I know I would be an anxious wreck in a situation like that (we have 13 resuce animals). And, I am SO GLAD to hear he is doing much better now. whew!
He’s a great dog and good friend to Clara. You are such wonderful champions for him, too! All the best to Burgs!
Barbara says
NO! I am so glad Burger is okay! Sounds like he hit his noggin! My chi, Jeep, came screaming across the yard, misjudged the step and clocked it with his head. He rolled off the porch (a triple roll) while I screamed! I picked him up and I swear you could see little birdies fly around his head. Five minutes later, he was fine. Poor Burger. I want to kiss his little head!
MORE BURGER! LESS INJURIES!

Aw, so glad Jeep was ok! So scary!

LOOOVE the bathroom! I’m glad Burger is okay and wondering if maybe he had a ‘vagal response?’ My daughter has fallen twice (well, fainted once), and hit her spine both times. She seemed to have a seizure both times, too, but the doctor said it was just one of those weird things. Very scary, though. I know, comparing four-legged babies with two-legged ones!
YoungHouseLove says
So scary! I’m sure it totally could have been that! We’re just so thankful that it hasn’t happened again and he’s back to his normal self (curled up between us on the sofa right this moment).

Lots of love to Burger! Nothing like that has ever happened to my baby Biscuit, but I nanny for a family that has a Chihuahua/Yorkie mix, and I walked in on her (Lucy) having a seizure one day. I called her parents, and they informed me that it happened often. Apparently when she jumps from a high surface (bed/couch) sometimes her knees or hips will pop out of place, and she has a seizure from the shock/fear. Your story reminded me of her. She is almost 10 and otherwise perfectly healthy!
So happy Burger is okay!! From one doggy parent to another!
YoungHouseLove says
That’s so scary! We have been hearing about other chihuahuas having fear/shock seizures so that must have been what it was!

Oh gosh, I will have to go back and read the rest of the post about the bathroom. I didn’t get any further then the part about your pup. Our dog is our family so I know that when anything happens to our pup it is so scary. Hope Burger is feeling better now – sending lots of positive thoughts Burger’s way!

Ah I’m so behind on my reading today, but our cat Macky has seizures and it is incredibly, incredibly scary. His are also only about 30 seconds but they are always the longest 30 seconds of our lives and we will never get used to dealing with them. Glad to hear Burger is doing well and I hope he never experiences that again!
ps- yay to MIchelle for the feature :)

So glad Burger is okay.
I’m definitely diggin’ the stencil AND like how it looks at the ceiling without crown molding. The molding looks great (adds that special touch) on the bottom 1/2 of the room. But the diamond pattern looks so cool up top with it’s zig-zag edge. Sometimes less is more!
AJ says
Poor Burger! If you don’t already have it, you might consider getting pet insurance for the lil guy. We have used both VPI and Pet Plan for our furbabies, and it’s saved us quite a bit of cash (and stress over the cost) several times now. It doesn’t always pay off as much with emergency vet visits, but it’s been a godsend for unexpected surgeries.
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks AJ! Never even thought about that, but it’s worth looking into!

So sorry to read about your scare with Burger. Extra love and treats for the lil man this week! My childhood miniature dachshund did the same thing except she broke her back and had to have emergent surgery @ Virginia Tech. She sported hind leg wheels for a while until she was able to walk again. So glad Burger’s ok!!
P.S. LOVE your blog!! Thanks for all the great tips and inspiration.

I’m so glad Burger is OK! Our beagle had an almost identical accident about 2 years ago…my husband went to pick him up and he fell on his back after squirming out of his arms. He had a short seizure soon after the fall and was perfectly fine by the time we got to the vet about 15 minutes later. Our veterinarian actually thought that the fall was a “pre-symptom” of the impending seizure and told us to watch him in the future. He ended up having one more seizure about 8 months later completely out of the blue but he’s been perfectly fine since then! We noticed that before both seizures, he got really clumsy and fell over a few times. Now, those are the things we watch for as a sign that a seizure may be on its way. I sure hope it was an isolated incident for y’all!
YoungHouseLove says
So interesting about the pre-symptom thing! And so sorry about your beagle, but so glad there have been no seizures for a while! Will definitely keep an eye out for signs in Burger!

Glad to hear that Burger is acting normal again. I just wanted to tell you that you might want to check out an animal chiropractor. It might sound a little crazy or weird, but they can really help. They analyze joint function in more depth than a traditional vet. They’ll make sure his spine is all properly aligned so he can heal fully and prevent problems that could show up later. We take our dog regularly to help keep her healthy, and my brother started taking his dog too after his dog fell down a full flight of stairs. Many people don’t know about animal chiropractors so I like to spread the word!
YoungHouseLove says
Sounds like a great tip! Never hear of them! Thanks for sharing Martina!
