Before getting to the Reader Redesign goods, we have a quick Burger-related story. Yesterday was a very scary day for us. Burger was sitting on Sherry’s lap and Clara and I came home and Burger was so excited to see us that he jumped off her lap (as he’s done a million times before) and somehow lost his balance and flipped in the air and landed on the floor on his back and neck. He yelped and Sherry scooped him up to see if he was ok but he shook his head and acted fine. So we put him on the floor but he couldn’t walk. He had no balance and walked into the walls and wouldn’t put weight on either of his hind legs and kept falling over.
While rushing to get everyone in the car to get him to the vet, Sherry called them to tell them we were coming and while she was on the phone Burger had what we think was a small seizure (he was very rigid and his eyes were open but he wasn’t focusing on anything and he was shaking violently). It stopped after about twenty seconds and by the time we got to the vet he was acting completely normal. He could walk and all of his vitals checked out. They think the stumbling and loss of balance along with the possible seizure was from the shock of the impact but he restored all function and checked out all of their many tests so we’re just so thankful he’s ok. They said we had to watch him for the next 24 hours for any signs that something’s off, and we’re still a few hours shy of that mark but he’s acting just like his old self and is jumping and running around (as hyper as ever, haha). Whew. He scared the heck out of us, but we’re all so thankful he’s ok.
But back to the reader redesign! Now that we’re shifting from kitchen to bathroom brain, it should come as no surprise that we’re gravitating towards the bathroom makeovers popping up in our inbox these day. And we’re especially charmed by ones like Michelle’s – because it (like ours) isn’t a total gut job. Instead, it’s just a few manageable updates that go a long way. And for Michelle, those big impact changes are paint, pattern, and molding (I was this close to an alliteration there). Check out her note below.
As fellow stenciling survivors, I thought you might enjoy our powder room make-over!
We added some moldings and used the Nova Trellis stencil from Royal Design studios to transform our boring powder room into a quirky new space!
The white is Ultra White by Valspar. The black is Black Leather by Dutch Boy.
We still need to add crown molding and wall art. I might also switch out the mirror and window treatment. This room is a little bolder than my usual conservative style but I’m digging it! – Michelle
We are too, Michelle. Thanks for sending the pictures our way. We love a bold pattern in a small space like a bathroom (rooms like that will never look giant anyway, so embracing them and turning them into something special is such a great call). It really wakes up the room in a nice way. And the molding and trim adds tons of style too. To read more about this project, visit Michelle’s blog. But first let’s hear what you like best. Is it the crisp white molding? The rich wood floors? The pedestal sink? Or the brave stencil job?

I love Burger!!!!I’m so glad he’s okay. His little face always makes me smile. (His personality reminds me of our dog that died 2 years ago. I always look forward to reading about him or seeing his little mugshot!) Thank you for sharing him with all of us.

Aw, so sorry to hear about your dog who died two years ago. But glad that Burger’s face makes you smile.

Lovely bathroom makeover, I’m saving this for my bathroom redo (whenever that happens).
I’m so very sorry to hear about poor Burger’s accident, those seizures are terribly scary. My little guy had several (not from falls) and now he’s on anti-seizure meds and luckily has been okay since. I’m glad to hear Burger’s fine, I always look forward to seeing and hearing about him on your blog, love those fur babies!

So glad your little guys has been ok since!

That seizure sounds terrifying. :( I’m really glad Burger is okay.

I LOVE Michelle’s style! Her blog is one of my favorites :-) And the powder room makeover is just amazing! I’m a little scared of stencils, but she has me inspired. Now I just need a house to get to work on!

I’m glad Burger is doing ok. I have two dogs (whom I love!) and when any little thing happens to them I am the mother-hen of all mother hens. I am out of the house, straight to the vet, no questions.
Although, I’ve learned from having a very rambunctious dog that they get hurt a lot. Most of the time I try to give it a few hours before I truly start freaking out, jump the gun and rush to the vet. Usually it’s muscle sprain from running to fast or falling off the stairs (which has happened before). I’m just really glad the Burgs-ter is doing great.

Hi Petersik Family,
Yay for Burger! What a tough little guy. I am so relieved that he is doing well. Pets hold a dear place in our hearts unique and different from everyone else (yes pets are peeps too).
Big hug to that cutie dog!

Poor Burger, so happy to hear he is OK! Word to the wise (just in case) our fox terrier (who, ironically, looks IDENTICAL to Michelle’s fox terrier, Ike!) got stung by a bee last year for the first time and similar thing happened! He didn’t get rigid, but he was laying on his side twitching pretty violently and would fall over every few steps for a few minutes. The vet said it definitely sounded like a shock reaction and with a little anti-histimine/steroid combo he was fine. We’re officially paranoid of stinging bees now :(
PS, love the rich wood floors in the bathroom. Makes me ‘pine’ to redo my outdated honey oaks!
YoungHouseLove says
Wow- thanks for the tip Kellie! So scary! Glad your pup was ok.

Oh, my goodness! I’m so glad to hear Burger was okay. I hate it when my kitties get sick; you must have been so freaked out. I’m guessing someone’s getting spoiled in the aftermath, though… ;)

Oh yes, he’s the king of this house for a while!

I’m so glad burger is okay! The first seizure my Rhyli.kins had was the worst thing, its so heartbreaking seeing them convulse and not knowing what to do. God willing Burger will never have to go through another.

Aw thanks Jazmin – love to Rhyli-kins!

I’m sorry to hear about Burger! I had a chihuahua growing up named pepper that started getting seizures the latter half of his life– which we came to find out is quite common for chihuahuas. Pepper never died from any of these (just old age a few years ago…) and always got back on his feet!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw, Pepper sounds like he was adorable! So glad to hear he always got back on his feet.

I teared up reading about Burger – so glad he’s okay! My elderly dachshund got kennel cough when we got a new puppy from the pound. One morning he had either a horrible coughing fit or seizure which knocked him over and he couldn’t get up. I came home from work another day to find my other dog was unable to walk in a straight line and had a head tremor. They were both fine in a few hours and the vet couldn’t find anything wrong either time even after hundreds of dollars of tests. But I was a weepy mess and so scared.
YoungHouseLove says
What an ordeal! So sorry you had to go through it, but so glad both are okay!

OMG…I am so sorry about Burger…I know that was scary for everyone to see but I am so glad he is ok!

Glad Burger is doing well. Our beagle had chronic seizures and had to be permanently medicated to control them. I remember how scary the first one was and how we rushed to the vet, too. Our vet told us that it isn’t painful for the dog during the seizure and that they kind of don’t realize what’s going on, so we were always just told to sit with our dog and make sure he’s comfortable when they happen. Hopefully that’s the only one Burger will have, but I wanted to pass along that info just in case.
YoungHouseLove says
Aw, thanks for the tip Lauren!

One of my best friends is a veterinary chiropractor… between my children and yes, my dog, I could not imagine the benefits we WOULDN/T have if we all didn’t get adjusted. Please take your chihuahua to the chiro! :) I have two chihuahua’s… they need adjusting too! :)
Glad he was OK! after the seizure… but that is a huge fall/jump for one so tiny… might want to start NOT letting him take those leaps… at least the ones you have any say in! I know! They do have minds of their own! :)
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks for the tip Penny! You’re the second person to recommend a pet chiropractor! I never heard of them!

Poor Burger! My chihuahua mix has done that before. Sometimes she acts like that after running into something (out of excitement). I just pick her up and hold her for a little bit till she gets over the shock but she’s aware of what’s going on she just can’t seem to figure out how to walk or catch her balance. But normally if it’s a full blown seizure with eyes closed and stuff- they say to not be near the dog or restraining them because when they come to they might be in pain and could possibly bite. Our little doggies have such a hold on our hearts!! Glad Burger is doing better.
Miranda says
I am just reading this about poor Burger (following link from Mantel post) not sure how I missed it.
I dont know if other people said this in comments or what, but I knew exactly what you were going to say as soon as I read he jumped off your lap…
I have a 14.5 year old Chihuahua. Since he was about maybe 6/7 this has happened. Very sporaticially.
It is happening more often now that he is older. I hold him through it. When it happens I just sit on the floor with him and hold him and pet him. He is usually rebounded within five minutes, and always very thirsty? I know that must have been scary and I am glad Burger is Back in action.
YoungHouseLove says
So scary! So glad your guy rebounds back to normal!

You guys have been doing a bang up job…love the scalloped rug…love the bathroom walls!! Beautiful!!! Such an energetic and adorable couple!! As for Burger…glad to hear he is back to his high energy self. Seisures (sort of unknowns) are common in dogs. A huge variety…some are minor, others are major (as with Heather’s lab…r.i.p.). Our big old Akita mix, Max, used to have seisures a few times a year. He is 13 now and hasn’t had a seisure or any other weird action for the past four years…so it is kind of the opposite. Since adding two rescued pit bulls, about four years ago, to our now six pack…we put them all on raw diet. Our pit bulls were so beaten down and so sick that a live diet was about the only thing to get them back on their feet again. It gets expensive for multiple dogs, but shouldn’t be too much of a financial crunch with a little chi-chi. You can find raw diets on the internet…but take care and check several sites. Also…if you do decide to feed him a little raw, you can mix it with his regular kibbles. I use this basic recipe: Cooked organic local Bison (yes, it pains me because I am a vegan..which is why the local choice)..leave all the fat in. Mix in about 1/3 part organic oatmeal (which will cook itself in the hot fat of the meat)..add to this a handful of flax seeds (ground)and wheat germ. Finally, blend (electric blender) dark colored veggies (cooked sweet potatoes, raw kale, raw spinach, etc.) Should be at least 1/3 of the meat mixture. Mix it altogether…put in serving size containers and freeze til needed. YES, I KNOW THIS ISN’T A DOG BLOG…hahahahaha!!! But I so believe in raw diet for dogs because it has done wonders for ours. I will continue to stalk your beautiful blog!!! Best wishes to you and your Burger (who is unbelievably adorable). Kindly, Tracey
