When we got a sweet little note from a fabulous DIY chick, we couldn’t wait to share her ten dollar rug transformation. Talk about inspiring! Here’s her letter:
I’m a loyal reader of your cute blog, and love your style! I wanted to send you some photos of a do-it-yourself project that I came up with when I couldn’t find a rug in the pattern that I liked. I see this pattern in a lot in design magazines, but for some reason have been unable to find it in any stores. I was thinking about it today, and realized that I could probably create this look on my own, and voila! I did it. I used a rug that I already had from Ikea (I think if you decide to do this, it’s best to use a rug with a thicker grade of cloth so that it holds the pattern/spraypaint well) and a can of Rust-Oleum “Espresso” colored spray paint. The whole thing comes out to being about $10! My pattern wasn’t perfect because I didn’t have my measuring devices, but I eyeballed it pretty well, I think. I blogged about it at kfddesigns.blogspot.com, so you can check it out there, if you like. Hope you enjoy!- Kristen
How fab is that? Honestly, it’s one of our favorite reader redesigns ever. And it was only $10! Insanely cool. Thanks so much for the inspiration Kristen! Makes me wanna grab a can of spray paint and coat… something… anything…

Wow that is a great idea! Thanks for sharing!

I like the design, but…walking on spray paint? Really? I would think it’s either crunchy, or at the very least, un-cozy.

I find it interesting but PAINT?!? What about fabric paint or dye. So, what now? If I have a tear in my curtains, I use a nail gun to sew it shut?

I think this a great idea for a rug that goes under something – i’m thinking like the dining room table? You can save a ton of money – the plain ones are always cheaper than the patterned ones! and don’t knock spray paint until you try it. there are some many different kinds out there now…

I think I’ve seen this done before somewhere – maybe Trading Spaces or something from way back. It looks awesome! Great redesign! I wonder how well it holds up.

The toilet paper light fixture on her website is fanfreakingtastic!!! That girl is fearless and that’s what I need more of in my decorating style.

Very clever! Just wanted to mention that if you ever can’t find a rug that you want…you can always contact us at Creative Carpet Design. We are manufacturers of custom rugs.

Love the look but like some others, the idea of spray paint on a rug doesn’t scream comfy. It might be worth researching other methods, though.

hello everyone….thanks for the nice comments!
it may seem like it would be crunchy under your foot, but actually it really feels no different than a rug i recently purchased from urban outfitters…maybe slightly rough, but certainly wayyyyyy less rough than a jute rug, and we all walk around on those every now and then!
i did this project at least a month or so ago (dont remember the exact date…) and it’s held up pretty well. there has been slight fading, but overall, i am happy with the result. since the paint was for indoor/outdoor use, it holds pretty effectively. i am sure that you could use some special (fabric) paint to make a longer-lasting look, but i already had this sitting around the house, and for a quick-fix, it was perfect!

Awesome. I love the pattern and have had the same issue with not finding an affordable rug with a pattern I like.
