Clara may be another year older, but she’s still a long ways off from her tweenage years. Which is why it was fun to live vicariously through Courtney’s makeover of her 11-year-old niece Emily’s room. Having virtually crashed Courtney’s own home last May, we knew there’d be some great eye candy, and we often hear from folks who’d love to see a tween room or two, so here ya go.
Hi guys! I hope all is well in the Petersik house. I wanted to show you my 11 year old niece’s room that we helped her makeover. She would be so excited for her room to be featured! This was an accumulation of four very long months worth of work. We converted an old laundry room…
… into a little girls paradise. We patched holes, rewired lighting, installed ceiling speakers, re-worked the duct work, added FLOR tiles, and painted all of the trim and walls.
Then we added fun touches, like…
… new lighting and furnishings…
… like a brightly colored armoire that we painted a bold magenta color (it’s extra functional for clothing storage).
All in all, it was a labor of love and she’s so happy with her new space. I hope you love it as much as we do. Thanks so much! -Courtney
Thank you for sharing, Courtney! Not that I’ll even pretend to relate to an 11-year-old girl, but I can see why she loves it. It feels like a nice middle ground between all-grown-up and fun-and-youthful at the same time. Bravo! You guys can see more about the makeover here on Courtney’s blog. And so many of the ideas like painting that armoire bright pink and adding some over-sized art and a sculptural chandelier just might inspire some other tween room upgrades (or even a master bedroom reboot if you’re feeling bold). Let’s play the favorite part game. Sherry is in love with “everything in the second after picture” while I’m coveting that old-looking geometric sculpture in the last photo.

love that gold table lamp in the last photo. such a great makeover!

I always try to make sure not to peek at the “after” picture until I’m there. When I finally scrolled down, I accidentally said, “HOLY SH*T!” in front of my three-year-old. Oops! I totally blame you. This is awesome. I love the flooring and curtains especially.

I would love to see ideas for teenage (and tweenage) boy rooms, as I currently have a surplus of teenage boys. (That sounds perverted, but I assure you, I gave birth to all of them.) Unfortunately, I have a deficit of ideas for making their rooms “cool” while still being boy-proof.

We’ll definitely keep an eye out for submissions that we can use for future Reader Redesigns!

I’m certainly not a tween and would move into that room today if I could!

Wow, can I just say even I’m jealous of this little girls room! Such a lovely transformation! :)

That’s one lucky kid. (saying the word tween or even teenager has made me cringe ever since those terms were applicable to myself) I would love to call this room my own! It’s very Gossip Girl-esque, which I love bee tee dubs. Anyway my favorites are the chair, the abstract art, and (I’ve gotta go with John) the geometric metal sculpture. Actually, at the Urban Outfitters in my mall they have these cool wooden geometric sculptures (much bigger than that one) that would look pretty cool in a garden or something. I snapped a few pictures just for the day when I get ambitious enough to try to make my own someday. Until then…

Can I live there? I’m 24, by the way… But honestly, I really love this room a whole lot. I remember when I was 11 and wanting something that wasn’t too ‘kid-like’ and something that wasn’t too grown up. I think this room is a fantastic middle ground. She can grow into it and the colours are neutral enough for her to be able to switch things up nicely using different bed linens and accessories.
So good!

This room looks great, but older than a typical 11 year old’s tastes, and it looks expensive too. I’m sure the little girl it was designed for loves it though! Bravo!
Vanessa says
LOVE everything about it. Wish I had a room like that!

That was a laundry room before?! MAN, that laundry room is bigger than my master bedroom! haha Seriously, though, this makeover is fantastic. So many great touches that will grow with her into teenagerhood.

Would have loved that at eleven or now! So fresh and fun.

I’m moving into my first post-grad apartment in two weeks, and I’m fairly certain I want my room to look exactly like that. I’ve been trying to find a way to build a room around that exact same bedspread (which I’ve had for a year), so that means I’m almost there, right?
YoungHouseLove says
Totally! Haha. Good luck and have fun!

I’m with you, I really love the old looking sculpture. I’m impressed with the end product! And I’m kinda surprised her niece saw the big picture in the details, I totally wouldn’t have been able to do that at 11 years old!
Suzanne @The Wine{a}be says

That is about a million times cooler than my room was at that age, and unfortunately still cooler than my hubby’s and my room now! Jealous!

Reading “be your own kind of beautiful” when I was checking out the pictures somewhat made me quite happy. Thanks for sharing this.

I think ceiling speakers is inspired for a tween to teen room. The armoire ismy favorite aesthetic piece, but I think she’ll love the speakers. Note made for nine years or so from now… :)

Absolutely adorable! Clara is so lucky to have such caring and talented parents! It is surely a gift that she ( and granddaughters????) will enjoy for many years to come! Awesome job!

I am SO loving the Flor tiles in the alternating pattern.
This is an amazing room; she’s a very lucky little girl! :D
Hannah says
While the room is beautiful, I think it’s a little too sophisticated for an 11 year old. I don’t understand the rush to push little girls into adulthood.
Courtney says
I totally see your point Hannah ;.) we were just inking it was a design she could grow with instead of having to re-do it again. We tried to make it as fun with colors and art as possible ;.)
Teresa @ wherelovemeetslife says
Um… WOW!!!! Seriously, that is the best mix of elegance, fun teen, eclectic syling I have ever seen. This might be one of my top favorite room makeovers of all time!!!

I have to say that this room makeover is not my style at all, and yet I still LOVE it! That says a lot, I think. What a fantastic, absolutely professional transformation. Really glam, really fun, and everything in it just works together so well.
Jane from Australia says
Wow, what a very lucky 11 year old. My 12 year old step daughter would LOVE a bedroom like that – thanks for the inspiration.
Ana Brightful says
That is an amazing room! Wow! I love so much of it, but what really hit me was the print, “Be your own kind of beautiful.” Every girl needs to read that every day, especially in the tween/teen years! As a mom of two girls, ages two and six weeks, that is exactly what I want for them. This made me tear up. Or maybe it’s the hormones. :) Either way, I love it!
YoungHouseLove says
I thought that was amazing too Ana!

Seriously, this is the best reader redesign yet!
Becky says
WOW! This room is awesome! I love all of the colors and patterns. You would think with so many patterns that it would get a little “busy” but it totally works in an oh-so amazing way. Heck, I’m 27 and I wish this was my room!
mp says
I LOVE that lighting fixture! I lusted after one on Lamps Plus for months, but couldn’t bring myself to pay nearly $300 for it. I ended up with an anchor-looking mod piece by Kathy Ireland, which I like a lot, but I still think wistfully of that boxy-round light I loved so much.
Sherry says
The ghost of my 11 year old past is in mourning. Awesome re-do, lucky!
