Nancy’s room for her son Owen is a great example of how a nursery or kids room can be cool and sophisticated while still being playful and fun. Which is pretty awesome, especially when the price tag is a mere three hundred beans. And since we get a bunch of folks asking for kids rooms, we couldn’t wait to spill the pics along with Nancy’s note below:
Hey guys! I have been living in my home for four years now, and I finally decided it was time to decorate it. I started with my two year old son’s room, and now I am questioning why I didn’t start with my room first. I may just have to kick him out.
His room evolved over the course of a few months as I decided what I wanted and didn’t. I spent a total of $305 to makeover his room thanks to doing my best to be crafty and resourceful (I definitely don’t mind shopping at thrift stores).
To help keep costs low, I made a lot of the items in his room myself, including the shelving, the curtains, the wood accent wall, his toys, his blankets and pillows, and most of his art work.
I painted his dresser, which was a dump rescue. The antique rocker was a Craigslist buy, and his crib was a baby shower gift from my father.
I am really pleased with the end results, so tell me, do I get six YHL thumbs up? Here’s hoping! -Nancy
Nancy, not only do you get six thumbs up, we’ll even throw in four Burger paws just for those awesome chevron-gradient curtains and that cool accent wall alone. So let’s call it an even 10. There are more pics of the reveal on Nancy’s blog plus a source list chock full of links to all of her DIY-ed items for ya, but first let’s play the favorite part game. Sherry is all. over. that. dresser. And I sort of want to steal that little gold whale.

Love this makeover, can’t believe the low cost!
I know this isn’t related, but I was wondering whether you are planning on releasing your book on kindle? I live abroad and won’t be able to pick up a copy until my next visit home which will be for months! I have a kindle though and would love to buy a copy that way.
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks so much for your interest in our book, Jade! We do think a Kindle version will be available- although we’ve heard that sometimes the e-version of a book isn’t as beautifully designed as the actual book can be (our actual book is also available abroad in a number of places like on amazon, the book depository, etc – there are some buttons on our book page with links to others too).

I love the Chevron curtains and the wall behind the dresser, it kind of reminds me of Katie Bower’s first nursery for Will.

I will hire Nancy to come to my house and decorate the whole thing based on this one room alone. Nancy, you’ll accept payment in cookies and dog snuggles, right? =) AMAZING. From the accent wall to the color scheme to those curtains that make me swoon, AMAZING.

This room looks great to me–a 31 year old. I just feel like in the age of design blogs and ubiquitous design trends like chevrons and gray nurseries that maybe some kids have lost a voice in how they can express themselves through their surroundings. When I see the drawings created by kids either when I’m teaching them as my students or when I look at the colors my toddler chooses for art, I don’t see a lot of gray, black, white, and only yellow. I see BIG BOLD COLOR and lots of it.
My toddler has had a lot of say about how his big boy room is decorated. My six month old daughter has had less so for obvious reasons. So far it’s light pink walls with lots of color throughout. As soon as she says the word, it will be what she wants instead if she doesn’t dig the pink. And someday maybe her hair will be pink.
I guess my thinking is that today the hip gray nurseries chosen on behalf of some babies and young kids are today’s versions of the Ethan Allen inspired matchy matchy preppy plaids my mother-in-law forced my husband and brother to have in their rooms when they were growing up. To each her own though, I suppose.

Love this room! The curtains, the accent wall, the mirror/shelves/art arrangements, all of it!

yes, the curtains are great, but I want more info on that baby blanket (quilt?) hanging on the crib!
Lisa says
Wow! Please, please, share where the curtain or the fabric from the curtains came from. They are gorgeous!
AEOT says
You can see in her blog if you click over. She hand painted them herself. Absolutely amazing!
Tanja says
I WANT those curtains.
AEOT says
Sherry, those curtains aren’t your favorite things in the room? I’m shocked- they’re SO you! Nancy did a truly amazing job. If the rest of her house turns out this cool, she should start her own decorating firm!! I love it all but most esp the curtains, the dresser (love the feet and the handles), and the wood wall. Definitely pinterest worthy!!!

Oh yes they have me drooling too!

My sister put me in charge of decorating her last baby (girl) nursery. We decided on gray and yellow and the rest is up to me. I am SOOOOO going to make those curtains. Took me while, but I eventually found her tutorial on how she did it.
Now to obsess over that sun graphic print (or is it fabric?). Perfect!
nancy@owensolivia says
Are you talking about the black dotted print? If so, it’s painted. Thanks for the comment! :)

My eyes are crying out for more color in a kids’ room, but as he gets older the accessories and bedding can fill that in. Definitely very sophisticated.
