After mentioning our near cross-country road trip last week, did you find yourself wondering how we entertained ourselves for over forty hours of driving? Well, we filmed a lot of it with our trusty Flip video camera. And we spent this past weekend not in the car (hootie hoo!), but trimming down all that footage into a little musical montage video of our road-trip-on-steroids.
For those curious enough to take the journey with us, we can promise you’ll see:
- Some less than healthy drive-thru decisions
- A bit of behind the wheel dancing
- Grade A nerd behavior in the form of a geographic-tastic driving game
- Sherry in bed with another woman
- Obligatory Burger footage
- Absolutely zero footage of Sherry driving (because it never happened)
- Fast-food inspired decorating ideas (we didn’t say they’re good)
- Sherry with her hair down (yes, for all you why-don’t-you-lose-the-ponytail peeps)
- Visiting cultural attractions – scratch that, visiting a Pottery Barn Outlet
- A preview of our adventures with the Bowers and my cousin’s wedding, which we’ll share more of soon.
So, without further ado, please enjoy the virtual road trip below…
And while we’re on the subject, tell us where we can get a sneak peek at some of your summer travels. Got any good road trip stories to share? Photos posted somewhere to view? If anyone else has iMovied a little road trip video, we’d love to see it. Long live long drives!
Laura says
Wow! That video was awesome! I even risked watching it (15 minutes!) at work- ha ha! Great job and keep ’em, comin’!
caroline says
You two are too cute for words. Your video brought back fond memories of the cross-country road trip me and the mister took as our honeymoon in 2007 – with three cats in tow. Thank goodness for love, fast food, and GPS.
btw, I loved the shot right around 8:25 of Burger nestled next to a deck of paint chips. They coordinate so beautifully with his fur!
Amy says
Loved it! I have been following y’all and am a first time commenter. Being from Dallas, I would love to see and hear more about your stay here. Anything you loved, hated, wished you could have explored more? We have a chihuahua like Burger and really loved the pics of him!
I would like to requst more videos. You two…I mean three (can’t leave Burger out) are fun to watch!
p.s. I work at a museum in Dallas and if you need a postcard, just let me know and I will mail you some.
Karen says
Great video! How does the Flip adhere to the dashboard? Any other Flip tips you can offer? Bring on some more fun videos!
Melissa says
That video was so wonderful! It looks like you all had a lot of fun! I can’t wait to hear more about your adventures! Sherry you are sooo pretty!
Paula Grace says
You guys are so funny! You made a road trip fun for all. How do you do that?

You guys are too cute! I loved the video! It makes me wish we had done a better job of documenting our roadtrip honeymoon from San Luis Obispo, CA to Seattle and back.
I just recently stumbled upon your blog, and I LOVE it! So I thought that I’d pop in and let you know. We are almost done with our kitchen remodel, so maybe I’ll have to send you some before and afters.
Keep up the great work!
Amanda says
Oh, AND- how about that really cute hair when it’s down, Sherry?! Love it!
Melissa Ozmar says
I am so glad you guys took video of your trip because it took me back to our road trip to Nashville just a few short weeks ago. Isn’t the view amazing!?!?!
Sherry is a way better woman than I. I slept 9 out of the 10 hours it took us to get to Nashville.

Giiiant Georgia peach…We’ll make an arrow and point to it (POP)!
Haha! Great video! Thoroughly enjoyed it!

I’m so sad that you underplayed Memphis and the Mississippi River so much. You were all like “we’re on some bridge on the border of, I guess, TN and AR” . Wah! Memphis is my home town, and that bridge is awesome, as is the Mississippi River. Props, y’all!!!
YoungHouseLove says
Sorry Memphis and the Mississippi River didn’t get to shine in this cut of the video, Lili! There was footage of us going “oooh pretty” at the river but then not being able to get the camera high enough over the guardrail for anything spectacular. And we definitely understand the burn of people not appreciating your city’s waterway. We love the scenic river that runs through our hometown of Richmond, but it does not make a great impression from I-95!

That was so much fun to watch. Thank you for sharing your trip. It makes me jones for a road-trip!

I LOVED this…you did an awesome job with the video. I absolutely love road trips with my husband and you guys looked to have a blast. I love that Burger goes with you wherever.
I actually JUST posted an entry about car rides with ‘my boy’…heres the link if you’d like….

You guys are too cute (and you rock at video editing)! You were really close to us (Knoxville, TN–go Vols!). We’ve taken a few (MUCH shorter) road trips with our pets to visit my family in NC–always an interesting experience!
P.S. I second the person who recommended Pal’s. Love their Frenchie Fries!

Love me a real man that does ALL the driving!!!!!
Jennifer S. says
Good video. I got tired just watching it, and a little car sick, too. You should take these kind of long car trips when you are young and have no kids… not like me!
Kandice says
i usually don’t comment (because i’m lazy) but i just had to. you guys make a fourty hour drive look soooo much fun. i know you have heaps of great post but this is by far my fav!!! can’t wait to see more!!!
p.s.
how do you find those cute hotels? are the pet friendly?
-K
YoungHouseLove says
Aw thanks Kandice! You’re making us blush. When it comes to traveling with Burger, we’re always sure to stay at pet friendly hotels… and we actually have a video for you all about that process in the pipeline. Stay tuned!

8:26 Burger with colour samples! Love it!
Concerned says
This video makes me furious. Why would you endanger the lives of innocent people while trying to film yourselves? That’s just stupid. One of my friends was in a horrific car accident because a driver wasn’t paying attention to the road. She was filming herself and slammed into my friends’ car. Her passenger wasn’t so lucky. She died. My friend lived, but she suffered a broken leg, foot hip, arm and ribs. She’s gone through 3 surgeries and will never be able to walk without a limp again.
YoungHouseLove says
We are so sorry to hear about your friend’s terrible accident. I’m not sure if you caught our earlier post which showed that the camera was mounted to the dashboard so the driver was never holding it (it simply recorded us while we drove). Another part of the video that hit the cutting room floor (boiling down 41 hours of tape was a big job!) was us mentioning that we only focused on photos and filming when traffic thinned out and we weren’t surrounded by cars (unless I was filming cities out the window which didn’t effect John’s driving ability). But we can still see how this could hit a nerve and again we’re terribly sorry for that! We love each other and our beloved pooch more than words can say so of course safety is always our primary concern when we’re on the road. Hope it helps!

Loved this! Reminds me of when I was much younger, taking lots of road trips to the beach and all over. If you guys had gotten on I-65 in Birmingham for very long you would have seen Wyoming plates…I see them all the time, I’m guessing they are heading to or back from Florida. I have to say that I enjoyed your shorter version of the road trip than actually making one. I remember a trip to Carlsbad New Mexico that took what seemed like forever (from south Mississippi) and we did see lots of tumbleweeds.
Jill says
What is your roadtrip soundtrack? One day I when I have disposable income I want to get Sirius radio, but until then it’s CD’s or channel surfing. One of my favorite roadtrip listens is Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me on NPR on Sundays. Nothing like trivia to pass the miles!
YoungHouseLove says
Hmm, good question! Aside from listening to The Lovely Bones on tape, we enjoyed Black Eyed Peas, Fall Out Boy, Panic At The Disco, The Killers, Lady GaGa, and old scool Britney Spears. Good times.

Youngsters! Great video — very fun and entertaining, especially since you drove through my homestates of LA and TX! Kudos to John for driving ALL THOSE HOURS — you are a champ. Sherry, don’t let that one go =)
Keep the videos coming! They’re so fun…

Your video was great and you guys are too cute!
Robin says
Oh, how I love this video!! I wish I would have known you were passing by my house, (I live in Atlanta on the Chattahoochee River, I could have waved to you passing on the highway!) for some sweet tea, southern hospitality, and a little doggy meet & greet (we have a 7 month old puggle who would love to meet Burger!) Hope you enjoyed your road trip…it looks like you guys had a blast.
My wonderful man does all the driving when we road-trip, which is nice because I get stressed when driving long distances. We don’t have any trip-related videos but my man is starting a “vlog” so we’ll have to get one of those fancy tripods and try this out ourselves. Thanks for the idea! It’ll be nice to immortalize our trips like this from now on :)
Amy D G says
Super cute video! Sherry, my absolute FAVORITE part is when you say “I don’t think you’re ready for this jelly” as you cross into Arkansas (I think?) My friends and I love to say that! Everything is made better by a little Beyonce…
Joi says
You guys are too darn cute. Loved every minute of it!

I loved the video, you guys even entertained my 21 month old, she was all up on the computer screen lol. I think answering some blog questions on video is a great idea, I love seeing you guys in action.

Loved the roadtrip video. It reminds me of our (my husband & I and our dog Wylie) trip from LA to St. Louis/So. Illinois this past Christmas. Although, I haven’t had a chance to go through our video footage yet. I’ve been dreading it…but after seeing your video I’m inspired to get to work. Thanks!

I had a road trip early this summer. Topeka to just north of Memphis. About 8 hours drive time. I crossed the Mississippi River on the North side of Memphis, looked like you crossed on the South bridge.
It was great – I got to meet my new DILs parents and family. Since I’m widowed and my sister never married/had kids, there’s not much family to ‘get together with’ on my side of the family. It was so cool to be invited to my son’s new family’s reunion.

Love love the PB Outlet. Plus you drove right by my house. And by right by I mean a mere two and a half blocks. I live right off of I85 in Durham NC. You totally should have stopped for dinner or at least to check out our attic finishing project currently at its midpoint.

How can you two get any MORE PRECIOUS!!!!!
Dorothy says
Hilarious! I like how you documented the hours with your fingers as well.
I’m sure you’ve been asked this before… but can I ask you about the camera you’re using? Is that specifically a video camera or is it like a digital camera with video capability? It is just so cute and the quality of your sound is great, which my digital camera does not seem to capture well, so I’m curious.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Dorothy,
Our video camera is a Flip video cam (we got it for super cheap on woot.com) and our digital camera is a Canon Powershot (affordable, small, and easy). Hope it helps!

Hey youngsters!
Loved the video! Sherry, your hair looks gorgeous down! John, props to you for doing all the driving! MY husband hates my driving, so I am only required to drive when he is just absolutely too tired.
June says
Good job guys. I didn’t think I was going to sit through 15 minutes of video in the beginning, but you guys are highly entertaining. Now I wish we had gone to the PB Outlet when we lived in GA. Anyway, keep the good stuff coming.

Hey Guys,
Just thought i’d drop you a line to let you know you’re totally awesome!!! I love love your blog-it’s inspired me heaps and so far i’ve re-done half my house!!!

You guys are just way too freaking cute! Love the video “ride along” for your road trip.

Hi John and Sherry!
My husband and I are taking a road trip from Minneapolis to Atlanta this coming week and I was pleasantly surprised to see that you stopped in Nashville, which is our day 2 stop! Thanks for the great hotel idea!
I have a question, how far is the hotel from Music Street?
Love the Blog! Keep up the great work!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Lauren,
Hotel Preston was probably around 15-20 minutes from Music Row. It was right by the airport if that helps. Good luck!

Monika says
I wasn’t sure if I’d be interested in 15-minutes of road trip footage, but I watched and enjoyed the whole thing. Great editing and soundtrack. Totally adorable!
Jill says
Hey Lauren, hopefully you will read this post. I live in Nashville and thought you might want to know about another hotel that is equally cool, but closer to downtown Nashville. Hotel Indigo is a boutique hotel on West End, not far from downtown and Music Row. It is close to Vanderbilt, food and Centennial Park too. Since I live in Nashville, I’m not sure about prices. Have fun in Nashvegas!
Deidre says
Me and my fiance (grammar anyone??) are moving his things from Memphis to LA this weekend and we wanted to do a video but wasnt sure about the hassle. But yours was great and I think we’ll DEFINITELY do one now… We are looking forward to 24 hours one-way. Besides the license plate game, my fav is the ABC game. You just compete to find all of the letters of the alphabet from A to Z using signs, license plates, ads on trucks anything. There are all kinds of rules and it gets pretty competitive (especially when looking for Q and Z)! Glad I found your video – happy traveling!
Billy says
Loved the video – you guys are so natural and charming on camera…I won’t be surprised at all when you get your own TV show.
But I’m really writing to ask you what kind of point-and-shoot camera you use for those still photos? Really nice shots…I’m looking for a new digital camera and would love your referral/recommendation.
-Billy
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Billy,
It’s a Canon Powershot. We love it because it’s relatively cheap and super small and easy to tote around- plus it takes some pretty good pictures! Hope it helps.
