You’ve heard of rolling out the red carpet, but what about the pink one? It’s Clara’s favorite color, and a nice warm tone (after filling most of the house with cool blues, greens, and grays, it’s nice to bring in some warm tones to balance things out). Plus the way the playful dots in the rug mix with the bold colors in Clara’s big girl bedding = almost more fun than my brain can handle. In person it’s even more happy! Seriously. Come over right now.
As for the price? Pretty darn hard to beat. We’ve had our eyes peeled for a while for something that would work with the blanket and general color scheme that we’re doing in there (red + pink with a lot of other pops like navy, yellow, teal, etc) but everywhere we looked (local decorating outlet, Overstock.com, Target, etc) was selling larger 7 x 9′ rugs for around $400-700, which was a little more than we wanted to spend. We even tried craigslist and ebay to no avail.
So we held out and kept looking and finally spotted this 7′ x 9′ guy for $236.95 (marked down from $629) on Joss & Main. It’s 100% wool, hand tufted, and the gradated color and fun imperfect dots that appear to be drawn on just felt so “Clara” to us. So we went for it. Not gonna lie, I was giddy when we clicked that order button. Especially since they were running a free shipping special (shipping fees can really add up on a big item like a rug).
Then after clicking that order button all giddiness subsided and we did that thing where we silently freak out about ordering a rug sight unseen. But since it worked out so well with our living room rug, we just tried to hope for the best.
Then it arrived and this happened:
Apparently rugs are fun even before they’re unrolled in the room.
Then when Clara was napping we finally got to see it in her big girl room/playroom. This space definitely started out super tame with very soft milky-tea colored walls…
… and now it’s looking pretty crazy-pink thanks to the bedding and the rug…
… but we think once we add in the art, curtains, new light fixture and other items that will break the pink up and balance things out (there will definitely be a large object or two on the rug and we’re thinking about navy for some of the frames and maybe even the light fixture). Remember how the middle makes no sense? Well I’m crazy impatient. Haha. Can’t wait to see it after a few more steps!
In the meantime we’re soaking up some of the plushness and pattern (polka dots + a gradient!) that the rug adds. Most of our rugs are the same tone throughout, so we’ve never had one that gets darker as you step into the room.
The polka dots are definitely my favorite part though. No doubt.
Are you guys ordering any rugs online and holding your breath until they come? Are you working on a room that’s only about 20% done so you’re in that giddy-can’t-wait-for-this-to-come-together stage like us? It’s so funny how this room has been a pretty even combination of paint, furniture we already had, craigslist finds, and now there’s a new rug in the mix. Gotta love a smorgasbord…

I am nearly 39 and I want that pink rug in MY room! Yay for embracing the color! I love how different it is from the other rooms, yet has elements that still say Petersik!

Love the rug, but I’m mostly in love with the bedspread!!!
Kate says
Really really cute. I think it looks great with the bedding. Love that you kept it neutral on the walls but are going all out on the floor!
I have a 20 foot hallway that I needed an affordable runner for. Couldn’t find anything premade, custom cut and bound was too expensive, so I found a carpet remnant and seamed and bound it myself for $150 total. Love good rug deals.

p.s. the carpet is fabulous. i wonder if screen caps from the think pink production would or could make some wall art for miss clara?

Did I miss that dresser being purchased?? I am so excited to see this room come together. My daughter (3.5yr) is sharing a room with her little brother, so I have to go easy with the pinks. Thankfully she loves bicycles almost as much as John, and that has worked as our gender-neutral theme with blues, grays, & yellows, and red and metallic accents.
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes we talked about the dresser on Monday, so it’s a few posts back :)

I’m really rooting for to paint that dresser navy!!! I just think the contrast would be amazing!! Can’t wait to see what you decide!

Aww I was hoping to see the fuzzy green rug in there. I thought it would be a great kids room rug and would love to see how you use it again. Did you sell it?
YoungHouseLove says
We have it under the bed (might end up craigslisting it, not sure yet). Since Clara’s so into red and pink we didn’t know how a big green rug would work and it’s a little too big for the room too :)

I’ve ordered several rugs from Wayfair… They’re pretty cheap and their shipping costs are low (or free?) Their indoor/outdoor rugs are a secret weapon of mine– they’re super plush so they don’t feel outdoor-ish but I can take them outside and hose them down if need be.
Debbie C says
The rug looks great, I like the graduated color so it’s different in different parts of the room. Rug shopping is really hard! I’m on the hunt for a 7×9 or 8×10 for the living room and have been going all over the place! By the way, did you spray paint that Ikea bowl on the dresser? Or do they come in red?
YoungHouseLove says
Yes, we sprayed it glossy red and actually used it as a prop for our book :)

Ive ordered rugs online but only after being able to read detaied reviews. right now I’m on the search for a rug for the living room.
Love how Clara’s big girl room is slowly changing. Can’t wait to see curtains and wall art. By the way, where did you get that lovely red bowl on the dresser? Looks a bit like the ikea one but i’ve never seen it in that color. So pretty.
YoungHouseLove says
That’s from Ikea but we spray painted it glossy red (it comes in silver and white).

Clara wins the funest rug award! Yes, funest is not a word but it seems to be the best way to describe it! Just wondering… What would it look like with the lighter side under the day bed? Might be nice to balance the happy bedding with the happier part of the rug on the other side. Great find! I’m sure Clara will love it!
YoungHouseLove says
We tried it both ways but I loved the color getting darker as you walked into the room (and the polka dots next to the chevron bedding). Who knows where we’ll end up though!

This is the exact rug I’ve been looking for for our little girl’s nursery! I am sad I missed it on Joss and Main!
Joan says
I recently bought a rug through Overstock.com and am pleased with it. The only weird thing was that it was described as red, but the photo showed it being orange, which was what I wanted. In person it was more of a peach which was OK, but not as zingy as what I had hoped for. When shopping Overstock rugs I restrict my search to 5 star rated products and read the comments and description very closely. Overstock also lists the thickness of the pile which is most helpful. Shipping is only $2.95 and often that is waived. I have never had to return a product to them, so don’t know how hard it would be. After I bought mine, a friend was impressed enough to order a different one for herself and she couldn’t be happier with it.

I think it is interesting that you are talking about a rug on the day you will be at FLOR. Why didn’t you build one of those for Clara’s room? They have such cool stuff that would make a wonderful area rug for your room.
YoungHouseLove says
We love Flor tiles and actually used them in our first house’s basement. Most of them aren’t super plush like a thick wool rug (which we thought would be awesome for when Clara throws herself down – which happens pretty regularly, haha!) but they’d be awesome in a playroom or sunroom I think! If we had the budget I’d totally do a wall to wall grasscloth-ish floor design in our entire sunroom!

Yep, I’m currently looking for several rugs for our home… we need the insulation from cold floors and some sound dampening. It’s terrifying looking for 9×12 rugs online though, which is what we need for our living room. They are SO expensive to start, and I’m terrified of disliking it and not wanting to eat $100 to send one back!

Joss & Main has the best deals on rugs but it is petrifying wondering if the color will be accurate or not!! I bought an awesome rug on there which I thought was going to be cream with a brown pattern. The brown pattern is actually forest green with a purple outline – not at all what I expected but I actually like it better than I would have the brown one!

I think the rug is perfect for Clara’s big girl room. Love all you have done in there. I was wondering if Joss & Main ever give you extra discounts? You get a number of things from there, thus are good advertising for them to the blog world. I think that should count for something!

We don’t accept special treatment or free swag, so everything is the same price for us as everyone else and we like it that way! Gotta keep it real :)

I wasn’t so lucky. Ordered what should have been a rug in graduated shades of light grey/grey/black from Joss & Main, and when it arrived, it was in shades of BLUE! Turns out, the manufacturer had uploaded an incorrect picture.
You guys do really well for buying rugs sight unseen! Great find for Clara!

i was wondering: what are you gonna do with that quilt you made clara ages ago? that funky stripy quilty thingy. is she bringing it with her when she moves? or is it gonna be passed down to le junior?
YoungHouseLove says
Oh she will always have that. She sleeps with it every night, so I imagine her bringing it with her in her big girl bed and it’ll be used in combination. I love that she loves it, so I never want her to phase it out! I want her to be 50 and still sleeping with that thing. Haha!

Hello! I’m an art student in Canada and I recently found your blog on Pinterest! I absolutely adore your sense of decorating style. I’ve never been one to read blogs, but I’m hooked. Anyways, I was wondering your opinion on statement walls? As in doing a funky wallpaper or bright colour on just one wall of a room. I personally really like them, but I have noticed that you seem to prefer a single wall colour. Is this because there hasn’t been a room that would work with one, or because they’re not your preference? Just curious!
Thanks for the inspiration, keep it up!
YoungHouseLove says
I love them in the right place for sure! We have had some stenciled walls (above a chair rail) and painted stripes in our first bathroom, although both of those go all the way around a room they were like a pop of interest in one small concentrated space, so in that same way we love a wallpapered or stenciled accent wall!

Neat rug — the gradient and the dots are an interesting combination. And I for one think it’s totally okay if a little girl’s room is crazy-pink, though it’ll be interesting to see how the room turns out in the end! :)
Alyce {Blossom Heart Quilts} says
Oh yes! This rug helps the middle make a ton of sense!
Lynn @ Our Useful Hands says
I love that carpet! It’s like a pleasant surprise because you face one direction and it’s polka dots then you face the other and it’s gradient?!?! “Please sir, can I have some mo?” When my ultrasound said “It’s a girl!” I panicked because I grew up with 4 stinky annoying boys and had no clue what to do with a girl, but I knew one thing – “She won’t be all frou frou and pink that’s for sure!” What did I get? My daughter came out the color pink (too much?) and now I can’t imagine her (and my) life without that color in it. All that Pink Propaganda has worked on me…I’m such a sucker. :o)
My best, Lynn

And, yes, that rug is a big win!! :D

I’m really enjoying seeing the updates on the big girl room. That rug is so fun! I have twin girls who are just a few months younger than Clara, and we are in the same boat as my girls don’t try to climb out of their cribs, so we won’t be moving them to their big girl beds until they are about 3. Looking forward to seeing how the room evolves!

Pink is my most favorite color! Clara is a very lucky girl. I know it’s my two cents, and I’m usually in favor of leaving a wood natural, but what do you think of painting it the gray from the chevron pattern in her bedspread? Can’t wait to see it all come together!

Either way I could see that being really pretty! I want to wait to see where we end up with curtains and the new light before deciding :)
