You’ve heard of rolling out the red carpet, but what about the pink one? It’s Clara’s favorite color, and a nice warm tone (after filling most of the house with cool blues, greens, and grays, it’s nice to bring in some warm tones to balance things out). Plus the way the playful dots in the rug mix with the bold colors in Clara’s big girl bedding = almost more fun than my brain can handle. In person it’s even more happy! Seriously. Come over right now.
As for the price? Pretty darn hard to beat. We’ve had our eyes peeled for a while for something that would work with the blanket and general color scheme that we’re doing in there (red + pink with a lot of other pops like navy, yellow, teal, etc) but everywhere we looked (local decorating outlet, Overstock.com, Target, etc) was selling larger 7 x 9′ rugs for around $400-700, which was a little more than we wanted to spend. We even tried craigslist and ebay to no avail.
So we held out and kept looking and finally spotted this 7′ x 9′ guy for $236.95 (marked down from $629) on Joss & Main. It’s 100% wool, hand tufted, and the gradated color and fun imperfect dots that appear to be drawn on just felt so “Clara” to us. So we went for it. Not gonna lie, I was giddy when we clicked that order button. Especially since they were running a free shipping special (shipping fees can really add up on a big item like a rug).
Then after clicking that order button all giddiness subsided and we did that thing where we silently freak out about ordering a rug sight unseen. But since it worked out so well with our living room rug, we just tried to hope for the best.
Then it arrived and this happened:
Apparently rugs are fun even before they’re unrolled in the room.
Then when Clara was napping we finally got to see it in her big girl room/playroom. This space definitely started out super tame with very soft milky-tea colored walls…
… and now it’s looking pretty crazy-pink thanks to the bedding and the rug…
… but we think once we add in the art, curtains, new light fixture and other items that will break the pink up and balance things out (there will definitely be a large object or two on the rug and we’re thinking about navy for some of the frames and maybe even the light fixture). Remember how the middle makes no sense? Well I’m crazy impatient. Haha. Can’t wait to see it after a few more steps!
In the meantime we’re soaking up some of the plushness and pattern (polka dots + a gradient!) that the rug adds. Most of our rugs are the same tone throughout, so we’ve never had one that gets darker as you step into the room.
The polka dots are definitely my favorite part though. No doubt.
Are you guys ordering any rugs online and holding your breath until they come? Are you working on a room that’s only about 20% done so you’re in that giddy-can’t-wait-for-this-to-come-together stage like us? It’s so funny how this room has been a pretty even combination of paint, furniture we already had, craigslist finds, and now there’s a new rug in the mix. Gotta love a smorgasbord…

We live in Richmond. A few years ago we purchased a hall tree at a local pickup from EBay. When we picked it up, the lady had two other things, a desk and an Oriental rug for sale. If we bought the desk at a cheap price, we would get the Oriental rug free.
The rug was large enough to cover our dining room and the major colors were navy blue and…pink. We hadn’t remodeled our dining room at the time since the purchase of the house. The room had pink dogwood flowers all over the wall. It was oddly pretty, but claustrophobic. That is now gone and that room has been going through an extensive renovation since, almost finished.
I want to get the rug cleaned. We will probably redo the chair seats etc with an abstract navy design and not focus on the pink.

Is that a red spray painted Ikea bowl I spot on the dresser?
YoungHouseLove says
Yup, just used glossy red spray paint. It’s not food safe but it’s great for papers, mail, toys, etc.

I just got a smoking deal on a set of four rugs from Cost Plus World Market. They had a one day only sale earlier this week where you could buy one regularly priced item for 49% in-store or online! I don’t follow football at all, but I guess there’s this thing called the “Superbowl”, and their homwtown team the “49ers” have made it to this so-called “Superbowl”. Just kidding. I don’t live under a rock. I’m aware of this sporting event. Anyway, in their excitement they decided to celebrate with this sale. For a grand total of $145.98 I got a 4pc set consisting of the following sizes: 21″Wx33″L, 4’9″Wx7’L, 7’6″Wx9’2″L, and a 21″Wx7’L Runner! Here’s a link if you have time. http://www.worldmarket.com/product/kirman-red-4pc-rug-set.do

I discovered your blog a few days ago and I am a big fan! I am from Richmond so I loved that your wedding cupcakes were from Ukrops (still so sad that they sold out to Martins…thank the Lord they kept the bakery items! Riots would have ensued otherwise haha).
Anyway, I cannot wait to see how this room turns out! I was thinking maybe a really cute toy chest in the center of the room (where the color gradient meets the polka dots) would help soften the transition of the rug a bit and provide some storage space.
Thanks for all of your diy and home decor inspiration!

yes, we’ve ordered online too but always with the possibility of returning the rug. We went through 4 rugs before deciding for our living room! The pink is awesome and I love the idea of navy with it. Can’t wait to see how the room unfolds.

The rug looks great! I bought a rug from Rugs USA on their Cyber Monday 75% sale and was super nervous/excited for its arrival, but for $46 for a 4×6 I couldn’t resist! And I love it. Here’s his nursery with the new rug http://simplesagedesigns.blogspot.com/2013/01/elis-nursery-phase-one.html

Are you worried about Clara destroying her beautiful bed? I LOVE the bed you have in there, but I keep picturing it in our house with playdoh shoved into the little squares and crayon marks all over it.
YoungHouseLove says
Everything in our house could be something we worry about when it comes to crayons and play-doh, but we have a distinct zone for that stuff (her little desk in the living room or the dining room table) and we get those out from a drawer (play-doh and crayons) so if she wants to use her table in her big girl room for those, she’ll have to ask for us to get them out and we’ll just supervise since we typically whenever she plays with them anyway. I’m sure as she grows we won’t always watch over her with that stuff, but for now it’s pretty easy to sit nearby and remind her things like “the crayons only go on the paper” and “let’s keep the play-doh on the table, please!”

Love LOVE love the rug, but AKKK!!!! turn it the other way!! so the gradient is under the bed, and the polkas are balancing the bed on the other side of the room!! I can’t look at the picture, it’s making my eyes go crazy, and my brain keeps trying to switching the rug to the other direction!
yeah. i’m messed up like that. but seriously, it’s too “pattern heavy” on the one side of the room. just turn the rug around ;-)
YoungHouseLove says
We tried it both ways – I promise :) John and I just both liked it better with the polka dots playing with the chevron blanket. This way when you walk into the room you see the rug gradually get more colorful as you step in. Like you’re walk towards the party. Hahah! I promise more pattern will make it to the other side of the room when we’re done so it’s nice and balanced :)

I love the pink rug! I have been “screen shopping” for rugs for awhile now but I just can’t commit. I am actually completely in love with the rug that you guys have in your master bedroom. I can’t believe the deal you got! My question is would you have paid full price for that rug? Do you think it is worth the hefty pricetag ($950 for the 8×10)? Thanks for your help!
YoungHouseLove says
It’s really thick and well made, so I think we’d have paid around $500 maybe? We’ve never paid more for a rug so it would have been hard to say, but I actually think it’s worth $950, we’re just cheap. Haha!

Love how Clara’s big girl room is coming together! Glad you guys have good luck with rugs – for some reason every rug I’ve bought online has been a dud! We even bought the same rug you guys have in the kitchen because it was exactly what we were looking for and it had your stamp of approval but when it got here it had all these weird little picks and dark marks on it (actually sewn into it) so it had to go back. I guess we just have to be all touchy-feely with our rugs! Can’t wait to see more updates on Clara’s room and excited about the pimped out cradle!

I was so in love with the rug in Clara’s room I searched high and low since it was on back order everywhere! I finally found ONE at rugsusa (I have a feeling it was a return) for my baby’s nursery. She’s going to be born in a week or so and my dog must sense something is up and he decided to go to the bathroom in 3 spots! I was HYSTERICAL. We sprayed some pet stain cleaner and rubbed (i know bad) and now the texture of the rug looks fluffy and weird in those 3 places. Have you spot cleaned Clara’s rug yet? I don’t know if it’s poorly made or if maybe the cleaner made it look funny and it can be fixed. Help!!!!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh no! I would let it dry out and see if it gets better in those spots (maybe it’s still a little damp there?). Maybe try spraying it with just water in those spots to rinse it out and then let it dry again to see if it improves. Anyone else have ideas for Jessica?

Hi what was the tax and duty like? :)
YoungHouseLove says
I don’t think we get taxed for online J&M purchases in VA (maybe only 3-4 US States do I think?) and I think they were running a free shopping promo (I always try to mention shipping in a post just to indicate the final price, but around this time of year J&M runs a lot of free shipping weeks).
