We recently went on a sectional hunt. Maybe this post would have been more entertaining if we channeled National Geographic and sprung for an Australian voice over artist to say things like “they wait in the brush, as the giant wildebeast sectional approaches” or “slowly and stealthily, the panthers Petersiks stalk their prey.” Oh well. The point is that we searched high and low for a new sectional. We didn’t just look around these here parts (now I’m getting all southern on you). We took a road trip all the way up to DC (2 hours north) to drop in on the Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams store along with a huuuge Room & Board showroom (four levels and 3,600 square feet of furniture = heaven, at least if you’re me). Sadly the trip ended with us falling in love with a few gorgeous things that we couldn’t afford, namely this ginormous and oh so comfy sectional in a rich charcoal gray fabric:
But the ginormous and oh so scary price tag of $4,496 (before our “custom fabric choice” plus tax and delivery) scared me more than the scene where the mom dies in Bambi (and while we’re on that, isn’t that a little violent for a kids movie?).
We know that when it comes to a sectional, we definitely want something comfy that will last while holding up to all sorts of insane kid-antics (growing up we used to shoot our sofa at point-blank range with everything from nerf balls to rubber bands, and that’s only the beginning of the torture that thing endured). And we know that a high price tag from one of the two amazingly reputable companies mentioned above would surely factor in things like quality construction and premium materials. But after a lot of debate, we decided that with a pooch and a baby (who definitely both give our current slipcovered sofa what can best be described as a workout) something swanky and un-slipcovered (even in a dark color) might not be the best match for our family at this point in our lives. Especially with such a high cost attached. See, we want this house to be all about living. With an emphasis on large casual family gatherings. We don’t want to live in fear that a nephew of ours might pierce/stain/otherwise maim the 5K sofa every time we have people over. And we definitely don’t want to beat ourselves up every time the dog gets past us with muddy paws or the baby shows us her previously swallowed green beans after a rigorous dance interlude with daddy.
So off we went to two local sofa retailers (we’re very satisfied with our white slipcovered Rowe sofa and our green Rowe sleeper sofa, which were both purchased locally from a store called Sofa Designs). We figured we’d probably end up with a Rowe sectional that we’d love for years to come, and fell in love with this one in particular called the Townsend:
But the price tag (over $3,200 without tax and delivery) definitely caught us by surprise, especially given that our other two Rowe sofas were under 1K. I guess we expected to pay around 2K or even 2.5K (since a sectional is kind of like two sofas put together). But over 3 times the price still felt pretty high. And it left us wondering if a $3,200 sectional (also without removable slipcovers) would feel any less precious and “untouchable” than a 5K one. For cheap-os like us, that’s still a huge chunk of change.
And you guys know that we had been considering this Ikea sectional as well (seen here in this mood board of yore)…
…so that was on the table when we made another pilgrimage to Ikea just to sit on things and check them out in person. Which is when we discovered that the sectional that we had been eyeing seemed a bit too small for our giant 25′ x 15′ room (and the last thing we wanted to do was buy a cheaper sectional to save money that ended up being wrong, which would still be a colossal waste of funds). But then we saw Karl – er, the Karlstad:
Pardon this picture of Karl, since the one we’d get would also have a chaise added on to create a big U-shaped place to flop down and watch TV, play games, hang out, etc (it would be shaped exactly like the Townsend by Rowe that we pictured above). And we’d do a little leg-sprucing since those raw birch ones don’t really do it for us. But anyway, Karl was everything that the other Ikea sectional wasn’t. He was large and in charge- the perfect oversized dimensions for our oversized room (and supersized family- when we get together for something casual there are at least 16 people in one place). Plus Karl is 100% slipcovered (which means nothing is nearly as scary since the cushions and even the arms and base can be laundered – or even replaced for a few hundred bucks if we want to switch colors down the line). It’s also funny how similar he is to the 5K Room & Board version that we loved.
And the price for this giant sectional plus add-on chaise lounge (which will create a huge family-friendly hangout zone in our cavernous living room) was just… wait for it… $1,248. Basically just a few hundred dollars more than we spent on our white Rowe sofa, but it’s three times the size. Literally. We had to tape off the outline of the sectional on the floor just to make sure it would fit. And once the tape went down on the floor we started getting excited. It would be giant and perfect for our huge family. And best of all- not too precious! Bring on the ice pops and fruit punch.
But we were still nervous that it would look bedraggled in a year or two, or might not hold up to the whole “dog + baby = mess” equation. So we did a good amount of googling around for reviews and write ups. We were thrilled to find that pretty much everyone had great things to say about Karl (although a few people didn’t like the sleeper version of him, since it was hard to operate, but that’s not an issue because that’s not the one we’d get). And then it happened, we remembered that Anna over at Door Sixteen actually purchased a Karlstad sofa after her pups had ruined her fancy Room & Board one (read all about that here).
It was all the affirmation that we needed to hear. Anna’s sofa is holding up really well over two years later, and she says she is very happy with her choice. Plus knowing that she’s a gal of style who lives with real-life wear and tear (thanks to her dogs) was the last “sign” we needed to pull the trigger.
So we went for it and put in our order a couple of weeks ago. We just hadn’t bothered to mention it since Ikea’s delivery schedule doesn’t have it arriving until Feb 4th (update: it might arrive a bit sooner than that- woot!). We’ll definitely share photos as soon as Big Karl (yes that’s a Cougartown reference) gets here. Oh and we got it in the same “sivik dark gray” fabric as Anna (we looked at all the potential swatches at Ikea in person and it felt nice and durable – and not too nubby, so Burger’s claws won’t be able to dig in and create little loops). So excited. Anyway, that ends the big sectional hunt. Australian announcer, take us out:
The antelopes dash into the jungle, grateful to have survived the harrowing lion attack (aka: The Petersiks happy dance into the living room, grateful to have survived the harrowing sectional hunt).
Fade to black.
Psst- Want an update on Karl now that we’ve had him for over a year? Here ya go.

Great choice! Have you considered using your beautiful white sofa in your master bedroom? It would look lovely (if it fits in the floor plan) with Ed and your new wall color, I think. We have a loveseat in our master that has proved to be a wonderful part of the room.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey BHH,
It’s actually funny you say that because I was just thinking about that yesterday. Once Karl arrives we’ll have to move it in there and see if it works! It’s a full sized sofa so it might be a stretch, but we’ll see!

I was thinking similar thoughts………like in the playroom when you lose the day bed to be Clara’s big girl bed. Great sofa, I would be really hesitant to get rid of it. You have the room now, hang onto it until you have to let it go!!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Jill,
We have the daybed in the playroom since that room will most likely become Clara’s big girl room (she’ll sleep on the daybed in that room) and the crib will remain in the nursery for baby numero dos. So we sadly don’t think we’ll ever have a spot for more sofas in our house, just more beds as the future kids grow!

Love it! Can’t wait to see Big Karl in action.

Guys!
Me loves the fact that you have a room large enough to support a sectional…so many times I see ity bity rooms with huge furniture but I think Karl will be right at home, but a part of me can’t help but wonder how John is feeling about all of these new men in your lives and home? First it was Ed now Karl? It seems casa Petersik has turned into quite the “swinging pad” for lack of a better term!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Ashley,
It’s true! Haha. Good thing John is even more excited for Karl’s arrival than I am (every night we sit down on the small sofa he mutters “when Karl’s here I’m going to stretch my legs out and recline”). Haha. Guess he has a place in his heart for all of our new “family members” too!

We have had the Karlstad corner sofa in sivik dark gray for around 2 years, and with four kids and a dog, it still looks as gorgeous as the day we bought it. Seriously, you will LOVE it! We have always regretted not buying it with the pullout bed option, but I’m feeling better after what you said about it :)

Hey Jen,
Wow, four kids and a dog is quite an amazing testimonial. So glad to hear it!!!

Love it! We are looking at getting a sectional for our basement family room area, and this one looks great! On the Ikea website, it says that color has a dry-clean only slipcover. Do you plan to dry-clean it when it needs cleaning, or do you think you’ll be able to wash it in cold water and hang to dry?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Bethany,
We’ve heard from two people that you can DIY it by washing cold and hanging dry. Does anyone else out there who already owns one care to weigh in? We’re so glad to hear from so many people who love their Karl!

Can I just say – I really love that your recent posts show so much of your personalities!! Like with your little puns and sidenotes.

Good find! Gotta love Ikea :0) I had in mind to suggest this store for a sectional http://www.mybobs.com/ but not sure they are in your area. Although they do have stylish sectionals at very decent prices. My sister has one of their sectionals and it has held up amazingly with two kids (not to mention it’s taken some extra beatings from my kids when we visit.) They also have a great protection policy you add on for only $50 and will cover almost everything for another 5 yrs.
PS – I love your growing family: Ed the Bed, Carolina the paint and now Karl the couch…who’s next?!
Nicole says
“ohh, look at the sectional in it’s natural habitat. it’s beautiful.”
great choice for you guys. I’ve been leaning more and more toward ikea furniture lately. it’s in our price point, and if you add little accents or use and item in a way it wasn’t intended, it seems to make it your own a little more, and you don’t feel like you have a showroom for a living room. not that you guys didn’t know that :)

This takes me back to March of ’09 when I became obsessed with getting the perfect stylish and durable sectional that could handle my 90 lb dog occasionally sneaking up there and my 5month old baby spitting up all over it.
I too coveted some M+G stunners but in the end couldn’t stomach the price. Ultimately we decided on the crate & barrel sectional with the chaise in the very cool herringbone type microfiber. The price tag was still high but fortunately I discovered a very cool place here in Seattle called couch. The owner is a young guy, VERY passionate about couches, and he was able to build and deliver the same chaise sectional for about 1/3 less and at any size I wanted, down to the inch.
I thought about Karl too but had a hard time because the pieces in the IKEA showroom get SO much wear and tear that they never look too great. I’ll be interested to see how it holds up under normal conditions. We love IKEA and remodeled our entire first kitchen with their stuff at an amazing price.

I’ve had the Karlstad loveseat in brown for a little over 2 years and it has held up nicely (even with a 6.5 ft tall boyfriend lounging on it! a true test for apartment-sized furniture quality). The only problem has been some mystery discoloration happening in 2 or 3 spots on the arms and sides. It was never in direct sunlight and nothing was ever spilled on it, but there are random faded spots. The good news is I’m in a bigger place now and am probably going to get the chaise add-on and some new covers while I’m at it. So I’ll get a whole “new” sofa for around $400! Also, I think you can purchase different style feet for the sofa from Ikea if you don’t like the birch…
Nadia says
I too can vouch that ikea couches are great! We had an ektorp loveseat, which we loved but it was too small….off to craigslist! We only had it for a year and it seemed to retain it’s value pretty well, especially since I sold it with two new slipcovers. Now we have the huge, super comfy hovas…love it!! I only wish they had a gray slipcover option since right now we have white and while she’s holding up very well, 3 dogs and a 2-year-old will eventually prove to be too much I’m sure! We ‘re going to paint our walls a soft “greige” eventually, do you think the brown couch would look ok or would it stick out like a sore thumb??
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Nadia,
Nope! We think neutrals like that can be paired and layered and still look lovely!

GREAT CHOICE!!!! I live all the way up in Maine, and the closest IKEA is over 3 hours away :( but I finally made it down this summer, and good thing we brought a truck because we left with the Kivik sofa and tons “wicked good” stuff! I had my eye on Karl for years, then Kivik showed up… Such a hard choice, I think I lost sleep over this (How dare IKEA put me in such a tough position).
Eventually, I’m gonna go back and pick up Karl.
I can’t rave about my couch enough, its freaking awesome! So many wicked cool features! I’m excited for you guys!

We too have a LARGE sectional. It’s so great for family parties. This weekend we had 8 people on it with room to spare. What do you plan to do for a “coffee table”. I’ve really been wanting a ottoman that we can use for a coffe table, but most of the ones I see are rectangle. Our sectional is more square as it’s two full sofas on each side, 129″ x 129″ (here’s a diagram of it: http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/ee475/mtkgal/our_sectional_diagram.jpg )
I’m thinking we’d need something square or round maybe. Any suggestions on size what size I should look for? I don’t want it to look dwarfed by the size of the couch.

ahhhh, let the “sectional healing” begin. (can’t get enough of that lame joke.) ENJOY!

Great choice!
I love ikea sofas. I bought the Ektorp used and its still going strong two years into its life with my and the bf.
I’ve only met one ikea couch I didn’t love. Klippan ( http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S79861261 ) is a jerk…and looks sloppy at our friends house. Maybe its their fault…theyre tough on furniture, but the slipcover gets all bunched up and doesn’t stay tucked in.
JMJE says
I love it. One of the best hand me downs I ever received was when my parents gave me their red leather sectional last year because they got a new couch and planned on moving the sectional upstairs. Lucky for me it wouldn’t fit upstairs and they begrudgeingly gave it to me. I love sectionals.
Christine says
Love this sofa (and IKEA in general). Having always had smallish “apartment” sofas, I was desperate to get a comfy sectional once I had a house. The Ikea options of putting bits and pieces together for the size and function you need is key, along with slipcover options. I went with the Tylosand – was able to find the chaise section on craigslist, bought the loveseat part and new covers for the whole thing – voila! Swanky new super comfy sectional for less than $900! My living room is not at all large and has lots of doors, windows, stairwell, etc. so furniture placement is tricky but the sectional makes the most of the limited space. I’ve had three Ikea sofas over the past decade and they were all very sturdy (and I have pooches). They were all in good enough shape after several years of use that I was able to sell them for a decent amount of $$ to put towards the next sofa. Can’t wait to see deep, dark mysterious Karl in your new LR!
Meg Annan says
My husband and I have had the Karlstad sectional for about 2 years and we LOVE IT. Super affordable, and we love that we can add onto it and change up the covers for a whole new look. It’s surprisingly comfortable (doesn’t look it, but it is!) and the quality is great. YAY for KARL!
Shannon says
We have a tufted Karl in the Ullevi Gray (a yummy wool fabric) and absolutely love it! (It’s here in our living room: http://nestonthehill.blogspot.com/2010/07/mid-century-story.html) I was afraid it wouldn’t hold up well, but the Google searches did our hearts well, too. Wish we had space for the sectional!
Kristin F says
Great choice, IKEA just really can’t be beat for pricing and durability. I dragged my family to the one in Charlotte this past weekend for frames, pillows, and such. Came home with those, plus a nice little bookcase for our office/eat-in area/spare bed area (yes bed, and no, not a typo!). Hubby found a leather chair he wanted to bring home too even though it wasn’t on the list. Thankfully, they were out of stock and I didn’t mention to him that we could order it. He’s right that it would look great but isn’t part of the budget for right now. So kudos for staying in budget but getting the perfect couch!
Sam G says
I meant to add that our LARGE sectional is dark brown leather, so I think any ottoman that I get should be fabric. I don’t want to risk mis-matched leather. What do you think?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Sam,
Yup, we would love a round kid-friendly (no head bonking on corners) fabric ottoman. We already own one from TJ Maxx that we hope might work (it’s gray-beige with a nailhead detail) so we’ll have to see how it looks and share pics so you can picture it!

I use to live in Hong Kong and they have a different way to rate their movies. Category I was G and “low” PG; II was PG and PG 13; III was R and above. We were only allowed to watch Cat. I movies, since we were young. Well we got upset that Bambi was rated Cat II due to… yep the fact that the mom gets shot. And last time I checked, South Park was Cat I even with all the adult topics, crude jokes and sometimes graphic animation. Bambi? Still Cat II. Go figure.

Yay! We plan on buying the same sectional. I couldn’t stomach a 3k+ price tag for a sectional that will be used everyday. I already have “couch anxiety” with our nonslipcovered cream couch. Thankfully its in the basement but when we have parties, kids are not allowed down there!
Corinne says
Karl looks like an awesome choice! I wanted to get my couch from them, even checked out Karl, but ended up getting one at Value City Furniture. The dark brown slipcover at IKEA wasn’t the right shade, you know?
Also, IKEA delivers stuff? REALLY? The closest store to me is in Cincinnati (a little more than two hours away), and I’ve been contemplating getting my bed from them but wasn’t sure how to get it back from there in my dinky little RAV4.

The sofa looks great. Ikea should thank you guys for all of their wonderful products that you shed light on. I would have never thought to buy a sofa from there.
Quick question: What was John’s experience with Karl the sectional? I’m only 5’4″ and a lot of their beds and sofas are uncomfortably low for me to get up and down off of.
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Bridget,
John and I sat down for a while (we kind of monopolized Karl for a while) and both found it to be really comfortable. It actually didn’t feel any lower than our current sofa so maybe if it is it’s only a few inches. Nothing dramatic!

We have been searching for a new sectional and have always checked out the Karl as an option. I’m still not 100 % sold on it but I love the look and the price tag is a HUGE bonus. We would be putting it in our basement once our renovation is complete (if ever) and I’m afraid a sectional will make the space awkward, so I have been leaving on getting a sofa and ottoman combo so we would always have the option of moving it around. I recently saw this http://sweethomestyle.tumblr.com/post/2564985448 and feel like I need to find that sofa.
Sarah says
You guys have great taste…that is the exact sofa we are planning to buy in a couple of months, in that exact same color. Plus, we were already planning to paint our walls a light, silvery gray and I think we may go with the same color you used. Two things: while we were at Ikea, I found one of the cushion covers in the Sivik dark gray for $2 in the As-Is room and bought it to test out the washability. I washed it in cold water and hung it to dry and am happy to report success! Plus, now we have extra Sivik fabric (there is a small tear that is in an unfortunate place, so we can’t use it as a cover) that has possibilities for a floor cushion. Secondly: have you thought about accent colors? I am currently planning to accent with deep golds and possibly plum but am super excited to see how you style yours!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Sarah,
So good to hear about your washing-at-home experience! We’ve heard others report the same thing. Yay! As for colors, we’re taking it one day at a time. A lot of that will honestly just depend what rug or curtain fabric we find. We’re just gonna see where we end up…

Haha, every blogger is buying this sofa! Well it does look very nice and seems to be a decent quality. Did you buy the more expensive metallic legs? I think they really make the sofa.
Dan from Manhattan Nest did buy it too and now his friend Chandler as well. Actually she bought the smaller sectional. They both did their internet research seperately and came to the same conclusion- for this price tag its the best thing around. If you don’t read his blog already you really should start. I love this post and I am very interested in your selection.
We also have a “U” shaped couch and I LOVE it. It is so comfy and big enough to fit the whole family. Our only problem is finding a coffee table that fits in the nook between the chaise and the side section of the couch all while giving enough room to be able to walk around it. Let me know what you come up with because we are having a heck of a time.
Just something to think about.

I see that you have already bought the IKEA sectional, but I wanted to present you with a few options you might not have considered!! I work for a hospitality design firm and we deal with high traffic areas all the time!! I ended up buying a sleeper sofa for our living room when baby #2 was on the way from a company called Kellex. They are out of NC and made a really nice product. I did a custom COM fabric that I got from a connection, but I opted for a woven tonal herringbone fabric with a Crypton finish and I am loving how easy it is to maintain with the 2 girls and 2 cats!!
Either way I think you guys made a great choice for your lifestyle and your price point!!
