We’d like to present our bedroom with the award for Most Often Tweaked. It just seems like time goes by and a few things get added to the mix and it inspires us to remove the top bed rails, hang a ram above the bed, ditch the duvet, or move out some horse art. But we’re all about trial and error and learning as we go (who gets it all right on the first try? And if you do, please share your secrets!). It’s definitely one of our more out there rooms (read: not everyone’s cup of tea), but we like that since it’s our own private bedroom and not a common space where we entertain. So as long as we love it, my mom or the lady next door don’t have to understand our giant dandelion-ish chandelier or Señor Ram (who was originally seen here doing yoga with Burger)…
Although mom recently shocked the heck outta me and actually said she liked the whole room. I guess that means we have to do something crazier sometime soon. Haha. But really, one lesson that we’ve loved learning over the last few years is how much freedom there is in allowing yourself to make your home “yours” and not trying to please everyone – just do what you love so your house gives you a big ol’ hug whenever you walk in the door.
Anyway, this time the tweakage in here was inspired by our new nightstands. And those guys were much awaited. For the last 8+ months we’ve been using side tables from our first house’s living room, which were about 5″ too low (reaching down half a foot from bed was muy uncomfortable) and completely and utterly drawer-less (read: messy and waaay too tempting for a 15 month old to grab stuff and carry it around/hide it).
But thanks to the $11 yard sale nightstands that we grabbed last week in Delaware (mentioned here), we finally had two extremely appreciated features: about five more inches of much needed height (so they’re finally easily-accessible from bed) and drawers, glorious drawers!
Of course this side of the room is still only about 10% done (our last bedroom took about four years to evolve into the room we knew and loved when we left) so we still need a cabinet on the left wall to balance out the door, a longer and lighter bench at the foot of the bed, maybe a colorful throw at the foot of the bed, perhaps some smaller objects on either side of the ram, etc.
But before I get to the tweakage they inspired, I’ll go off on a side tangent. Typical. The cause of the tangent? Dude, our side tables stunk! So we had to deal with that super musty smell. And fast. They’re mid-century originals, so I guess we shouldn’t have been surprised that they smelled 60 years old. Maybe even 160. So to google I sprung, where I quickly read about and tried two different methods. The first was wiping them down with mild soap and water (Dr. Bronners). Total non-difference. Still smelled like a moldy rug. The second method was wiping them down with undiluted vinegar. Amazing difference! It worked like a charm. I just used a rag to rub them down inside and out with vinegar (which definitely smelled like salty potato chips until they dried and suddenly had no odor). Seriously, they went from smelling so musty that it smacked you in the face when you entered the room to not even smelling if you put your face in the drawer and take a nice big whiff. Woot. So if your drawers smell, you might want to try it. Not your underwear. I literally mean your drawers.
Back to our other night table related tweaks. Here’s the wide shot of that completely unfinished side of our bedroom again. With the pillows going both directions just for fun. Because I’m wild and crazy like that. Oooh, hooorizontaaaaaal…
Ahh, now they’re veeeerticallll…
Notice anything different besides the pillow turnage? Well, for one, the sleek lines of our new mid-century night stands have inspired us to remove the finials that we added to Ed the bed and try something that Bryn recommended to us a while back instead (she linked to this pic found here, and we really liked it).
Look, it’s Ed the bed. And he has some handsome contrasting post tops. But instead of using something permanent (like paint) I decided to use something free and completely removable (like ribbon). I already had some in my little gift closet full of to-be-regifted bags & bows. And I thought the greeny-gold color would tie in nicely with the curtains. So I cut four small pieces off of the long strand that must have come wrapped around some big box last December and used regular old scotch tape to attach them at the seam (which I faced towards areas that we don’t see, like the wall behind the bed)…
Oh and I wrapped that piece of tape up and across the top of the post so they were nice and secure from the side and the top.
Notice any other tweaks? The art finally got raised thanks to the new higher side tables (we were waiting to get them to see where we’d want the art to hang permanently so we didn’t make ten holes in the wall along the way). Originally we thought the art should line up with Sir. Ram, but we held it up in a bunch of spots and liked this placement best. Probably because it creates a triangle with the chandelier – and Sir Ram holds down the base of it like the bad arse that he is.
Oh and we also grabbed new lampshades from Target for $19 each (with 5% off thanks to using our Target card, I love that) because the last ones were looking a little dingy and the slightly wider shape of these guys slayed us. They’re actually either the exact same shade or extremely similar to the one that we purchased back in 2009 for our basement makeover (seen here).
Oh duh and we finally put the Ikea duvet that we mentioned buying here on the bed. We heard so many good things from a bunch of you guys who had the same one and loved it. And surprise, surprise – we love it too. It seems to magically stay clean even with a baby and a dog and it’s comfy like a big ol’ cloud. We also love that it’s nice and calm looking, just because we like the idea of letting other things like our Alaska berry prints, the horse art, my paint chip creation, our giant mirror over the sink nook, and the big chandelier be the stars and add texture, interest, & color in other ways. But we’re still definitely thinking about bringing a pop of color to the foot of the bed in the form of a throw. Or we could build/upholster a longer, lighter bench with some color going on. And even bring some hue up on the ceiling. Oh the possibilities!
I’m banking on at least 50 more tweaks over the next few years as the room slowly fills in a bit more. Which is actually quite titillating to a gal like me. Seriously, that’s my idea of a good time. Look, here’s some photoshop fun. Ooh a bright throw and a soft plum bench along with a moody greeny-gold ceiling could be interesting…
Oh who am I kidding, we’ll change our minds a million more times (and it looks crazy because it’s fake – haha). But it should be fun to see where we end up someday!
Any tweaks going on in your bedroom? Do tell. But let’s keep it clean. My mom is probably reading (and admiring Sir Ram).

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for the vinegar tip! I bought a 100 year old trunk (you know the kind from the movie Titanic) that I use for my coffee table. Even had a custom stand built for the thing so it would not be damaged on the floor. Well, since I live in a 1920’s house, storage space is limited so I am storing my gift wrapping supplies in the cloth-lined trunk. I cannot get rid of the musty smell and every gift that I wrap smells like it is from an antique store.
Despite the scented candles, coffee grounds, baking soda, airing out for hours at a time…I cannot get rid of the smell. Do you think that this is safe to dab onto the old cloth on the inside of the trunk?
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, we wash Clara’s clothes in vinegar (some folks use it for washing towels and other stuff too) so it’s definitely fabric-safe!

Tweaks are good!
Have you considered doing a built-in for the nook – something like one of these – something cozy and fun…(no mirrors! LOL)
http://www.interiorsandallthingspretty.com/2011/02/decor-ideas-for-nooks-and-crannies.html
And is it my wonky monitor, or is the ram off center? Or maybe that was on purpose? Seems low. And left. hmm
YoungHouseLove says
Pretty! That’s always another option (we’re not sure if we want something to stand out a bit from the nook for more balance and depth)! As for the ram, he’s definitely riding lower now that the other art was raised but he wasn’t. We figure since the chandelier is above him if we raised him up much more his handsome face would get blocked. Haha.

Abby says
Love the green ceiling color! But, I think you might want to re-consider the placement of your floral prints. The main reason that the bedroom in Bryn’s pic/suggestion is so successful is because she has the eye catching art where it belongs–over the bed, which is the focal point of the wall. She wisely put large mirrors behind the lamps. Mr. Ram needs a new home–try your prints side by side centered over your bed.
YoungHouseLove says
We’re the first to admit that there are probably a bunch of different ways to skin a cat (er, ram?) in here. Haha. We just eye things and tweak as we go. I think the chandelier is a big difference in our room compared to the inspiration room, and we’re weirdos who like to sleep under the ram. Cheap thrills, huh? We also shared this other inspiration image a while back and loved the bigger art on the outside thing, which is where that idea was hatched. And the ram combined with the big chandy seemed to be a nice balance to us. But who knows where we’ll end up!

No tweaks yet, but I keep thinking about it. I have a corner in my bedroom that has an antique (my grandmother’s) rocker (stained medium brown) and also an antique dresser (be still my beating heart) which is also stained medium brown, the original stain. Those pieces all together in the corner don’t really go with the french cottage blue and white theme I’ve got going on in the rest of the room. I mean one side is white and blue, the other is blue and brown – I’ve tried to break it up with a blue and white quilt and blue pillow on the rocker. It’s not working for me.

One more tip on deodorizing drawers or a fridge.
Use charcoal!
Not briquettes…just natural BBQ charcoal in a little cup is all you need.
We came home from a vacation, an orange had rotted and the fridge and freezer had a chemical smell. It was a new fridge so the repair man came out. The manufacturer recommended throwing everything away and wiping down the fridge with water and vinegar then putting a few bricks of charcoal on a plate on every shelf and drawer of fridge and freezer. Keeping door closed for 3-7 days. When we opened doors smell was gone!
I then threw away charcoal. although I read you can “recharge” charcoal by putting it out in direct sunlight.
Now I just place a small plastic cup in fridge and freezer with charcoal and replace it monthly.
Better than baking soda!

Wow- love that tip!

I LOVE THE GREEN-GOLD CEILING IN THE PHOTOSHOPPED PIC (AND THE THROW AND BENCH AND ARMOIR!)!!!!

OMG I FOUND THE SAME NIGHTSTAND! Except I got it on Craigslist for not as great of a steal as you did and it was painted burgundy instead of having the original finish on it.
Anyway, too weird not to respond. I ended up painting it yellow and adding a handle. http://changeofsceneries.blogspot.com/2011/08/how-to-yellow-nightstand.html
P.S. I am the same way with my bedroom. I just “finished” it only to come up with another idea I think I’ll like better and therefore continue to tweak. It’s my never-ending redecorating project.

Just a thought……in my bedroom I needed some height on one side of the bed (with a dark color) to balance a black armoire that was on the other side of the bed. Went down to the basement and grabbed a folding closet door that was liberated from the kitchen pantry, painted it black and stood it in the corner to balance. It comes in handy to hide and stash the stand-up fan in the winter–bonus! Deb

The bedroom is really looking lovely! Did you see this on Apt Therapy yesterday? http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/la/diy-bench-three-becomes-one-kindalls-creations-155769 When you talked about a bench at the foot of your bed it reminded me of that idea. I think three chairs together would probably be a little much for your room, but I like the idea of taking a thrifted chair and maybe cutting it apart to make a longer bench, with plywood and foam and new fabric. Oh my!

Its very true that the bedroom is by far the easiest room to change because there is very little infrastructure. My bedroom doesn’t so much get tweeked as it does have things added, and added, and added, but never subtracted. Not saying that I’m a pack rat or anything just that I like to constantly have a change of scenery while still having what I have become accustomed to. I feel that this is more common than you may think, the bedroom constantly changing that is. I mean after all it is the bedroom.

Your vinegar route is a lot simpler than what I was advised to do for a desk I bought 16 years ago — per instructions from a refinishing website, I scrubbed all the drawers and the undersides of the desk with baking soda & vinegar, let it dry, then wiped it off with vinegar. THEN, after another drying period, coated it with shellac (not poly, shellac — supposedly sealed out any odor). My fingers had stinging little cuts all over them for days. And the kicker: the smell has come back. It’s currently sitting in the garage as I figure out where to put it, but I’ll do the vinegar wipe-out when it’s allowed back in the house.

I think the ceiling would be so charming painted the green you photoshopped in. Is it so much fun to see a space coming together. I was beyond excited to hang just one of four curtain panels in my apartment. The punch of color was badly needed! I hope to getting to blog about it soon, but curtain tourials seem to take forever as do the hand sewing of the curtains.

Love the gold trim at the top of Ed (and that it’s a non-permanent solution), although I wish it was a bit thicker. I’m also so happy to see that you switched out the pillow in front of the striped ones for a white one, the yellow/green one that you hard there before seemed to clash in my opinion. Definitely some good tweaks in the bedroom!

Just wanna say how I enjoy seeing your house transform. It’s something I’m forever doing at my place, so I totally get you when you say you’ll probably change your mind a million times, hehe. xo

Okay, my heart just stopped with the painted ceiling!!! Man, I hope y’all do it Sherry. :) Fab-u-lous. The bright throw color/soft plum bench added to the ceiling color pulls it all together no nicely.
Adore the end tables & glad you discovered the amazing vinegar trick for those mid-century gems. Luv non-toxic vinegar with its zillions of uses – that’s pretty much all I use around the house (baking soda/lemons/limes too). I remember reading that to easily & cheaply deodorize a room or closet, set a bowl of vinegar in the middle of the room/closet, leave it overnight & the smell will disappear. It can really help to remove paint fumes that contain VOC’s (would probably be a good idea to set vinegar out whenever any other toxic building products are brought into a home…particle board, some carpets & flooring, stains, glues, some upholstered furniture & mattresses, etc.).
Colleen says
Our bedroom is also the least-finished room in our house, but we’re done neglecting it! We’re currently on the Craigslist hunt for some mid-century nightstands ourselves (or at least one–the room has some serious space issues). I know that with patience, I can always find the right Craigslist buy at the right price. The popularity of Mad Men makes it a little tougher to find affordable mid-century stuff, though! We really want some kind of vintage liquor cabinet/bar for the dining room but I swear that show has inflated the prices so much.
Bklyn Amy says
What about using the old x shaped nightstands at the foot of the bed side by side with a long cushion or 2 pillows on top instead of the heavy leather bench you have there right now? Even if that is only temporary I think that will look nicer until you find or build the perfect piece.
YoungHouseLove says
I actually tried that and they were too tall (nearly as tall as the footer of the bed) so it looked kinda wonky and poor Burger couldn’t get up (he uses the bench to get into bed, so it’s our functional version of doggie steps- haha).

Hello!
First time I have posted and the song that came to mind after reading your post starts out this way, ” Warm it up Kris!” ” I’m about to.” “Warm it up Kris! ” “That’s what I was born to do.” Kris Kross will make ya jump and I am hoping to see some color jumping into your bedroom soon! I love your cheery grellow and other colors. They make me super happy and are some of the best colorful neutrals out there. I say this because my master bedroom is the color of your kitchen! I painted it that color about seven years ago and it has worked with all of my manic bedroom changes.
What are you considering adding? Keep up the fun and thank you for relying on kismet to find your bedside tables. I wish more people out there would recycle this way and enjoy these oldie but goodie pieces of furnture that truly scream style and function all at once! Happy Decorating!

As for what we’re considering it’s more like “what aren’t we considering?” – haha. So, I think it’s awesome that you mentioned vinegar in this post because I was planning on replying to whatever your latest news was just to tell you…use hot vinegar on your driveway weeds! It totally rocks my socks! Just make sure to give each weed a good ol’ drink (i.e. saturate that baby) and those suckers will rue the day. Rue, I tell you!
Aaaand, speaking of vinegar, did you know that adding about a cup of distilled vinegar to a large pot or small load of clothing (let sit overnight) will totally get rid of unsightly stains…even your “drawers”! Ha ha! I kill me…

Love the bedroom, especially the new bedside tables.
BTW, vinegar in the wash is a great way to eliminate odors in fabric, too. And you don’t end up smelling like you have pickled privates–the smell of the vinegar dissipates when the clothes dry, if not before. You are just entering the Barfing At The Drop Of A Hat stage of little Clara’s life. Go put a gallon jug of white vinegar in the laundry room. You’ll thank me later :)
YoungHouseLove says
We actually use vinegar to wash Clara’s clothes (we read somewhere that after you buy new stuff you can strip off chemicals and dye by using vinegar and it makes them pure and as close to organic as possible, so we do that just for kicks). So I should have known that you can wash your drawers in it! Haha.

As small a change as switching the pillow direction may be, I think the room seems more open with the stripes facing horizontal…I guess I’d compare it to someone with their arms at their sides vs. their arms wide open (for a hug, like you mentioned – weird, no?)

Lovely side tables. That bed, though, just doesn’t feel cozy and grounded. I also feel that things are too crammed next to the door. The bed doesn’t need to be centered on the wall. In my other house I removed the door and mounted it on the opposite side of the frame to free up some space. At another house I removed the bedroom door altogether and added a pocket door. The doors to the other rooms remained the same, but the pocket door and some artwork framing the entrance to my master bedroom set it apart and made it feel special, which actually helped the pocket door blend in and make sense.
I’m enjoying your process of pulling this room together and reading the comments, which are always full of positive feedback but also some helpful tips. One other thing I would encourage you to consider is that it’s okay to not have everything perfectly balanced. You have the same lamps on either side of your bed, on either side of your long new desk, and on either side of your console table in the family room. Things feel a bit flat and all at the same height. Try mixing up your lighting a bit. The lamps in your bedroom are really nice, but the long, narrow posts on the bed and the long, narrow framed art with the skimpy frames lacks weight and focus.
And the lovely but heavy ram over your bed … you’ve read the feedback, but something else to consider is the health effects of an energetically unbalanced room and having a protruding object “pressing down” on you as you sleep. Your bedroom is evolving, and it’s fun following your journey, but this space is sacred and so I would really start thinking about how you might start addressing some of these concerns.
:o)
YoungHouseLove says
Yup, due to the chandelier’s placement the bed most definitely needs to be centered or it looks crazy in person! Hope that makes sense! Sometimes it’s hard for pics to tell the whole story, and we definitely plan to keep tweaking our bedroom as we go – but we must admit that we love waking up in there. It feels good to us. At least for now. Who knows where we’ll end up though! Our last house was a 4.5 year process, so we’re actually really happy with where we are at month nine at our new home!

Just a thought – wondering if you have tried putting the prints, that are currently above the lamps, centered between the bed posts. Then you could find a home for the ram’s head where he won’t look so lonely.

We thought about that but don’t want the chandelier to block them and also think the whole room would feel center heavy if that makes sense (big big, big chandelier, big art- all in the middle). It’s nice to have some art outside the center line to balance things out in person.

Can’t wait to try the vinegar. I did a whole process of sanding the unfinished parts, then Murphy’s, then lots of sunshine…and still my drawers stink. I love the nightstands. Those were such a great yardsale find–I’m jealous like the rest of your readers! When I saw the ribbon on the bedposts I thought it was some kind of brass cap. What a creative use of Christmas ribbon. We’ve been doing all kinds of work in our bedroom, but I don’t think I could call new floors and paint tweaking.
Erika B says
I’m really liking the tweaks! The new height of the art and the new side tables and duvet really made some great changes. And I actually love the “fake” photo-shopped bedroom.
I think it’d be really fun and pretty if you used some sort of white wall decal above the bed – maybe in place of the ram or around it. I think the ram kind of gets lost though, in all the white. It’d be fun in a place where its more prominent!
