Yup, it really has been seven whole months since our last house tour video. Unacceptable. So here it is. Eight riveting minutes of me walking around the house and babbling about anything and everything with the Flip cam catching all the shaky Blair-Witch-esque action. We just figured it was a nice time to shoot this now that the kitchen is done and we’re gearing up to start some new stuff (some landscaping bidness, upgrading one of the three bathrooms that we haven’t touched, building a big arse deck, etc). So come on in and poke around:
A few notes:
- Am I the only one who still has a scratchy voice two weeks after the flu? Sorry about the croakiness!
- I do know that a trifecta involves three things and not two. Brain = fried.
- This time my bra isn’t laying out on our bedroom chair…. and that, my friends, is progress.
- It also means I was actually wearing a bra while filming this video (as opposed to this time, since Katie blew my cover about my one-bra-ness here).
- I’ve listened to this five times trying to hear Natalie Portman or Mila Kunis (since you guys say you hear it) and I just can’t. But I really tried.
- I filmed about five minutes of this video and then walked into the bedroom and the front of the door (where we did a secret book project) was visible, so I had to start all over again. Woops!
- It’s fun to play Where’s
WaldoBurger (he’s in there). And actually my BFF is randomly visible through a window for a second too. She was just arriving while I was scrambling to make this video for you guys (hey, if the house is clean…) - Yes, you can actually see my shadow wildly gesturing while I talk about not being able to open the playroom door. Apparently I talk with my hands whether someone can see me or not.
- Once again, I’m terrible at walking around, talking, and holding a camera (it’s too much multitasking) so pardon the shaking!
Second random CougarTown-related side tangent of the week: dude, who watched Tuesday’s episode? Our ceramic rhino was totally in the background:
I’m taking it as a sign that rhinos are the new elephant/owl. Seriously, soon people are going to be putting a rhino on it. And have you noticed the big ceramic dog sitting next to Cee-Lo on The Voice when he told his team who was battling who? Ceramic animalz 4 eva, y’all. And the mysterious fluffy white cat that Cee Lo randomly holds/maniacally strokes is pretty fantastic too. If only I weren’t allergic…
Psst- Check out all the other house tour videos since we’ve moved in here, here, here and here. And here’s an outside tour from last year.
Rebecca says
I was going to ask when you did the Final Kitchen Post but didnt then was reminded of it now…..Where is Jarvis the rooster???
YoungHouseLove says
He is actually hiding in the playroom thanks to crazy book projects. After a few things broke or got misplaced with so many people in our house during that process we started putting random things back there to keep them out of the way. Poor guy is still waiting to be rescued. We we re just rushing to clean the house and grab this video before our guests arrived (they were actually in the driveway when I taped this!).

OMG, that’s so funny! When my guy and I were watching Cougar Town last night – I mentioned it! I said, “The people at YoungHouseLove have that rhino in the background.” I don’t even know if he heard me or cared but I was sooo on it! lol

About the master bathroom toilet: “it’s like from the future, it has a curve” LOL!! And now that you (or other commenters) point it out – you sound soooo much like Natalie Portman!!
Christine says
That big opening into your kitchen/DR makes your place seem like a whole different house! Love it. We had those same standard-issue shiny brass door knobs, and replaced them with ORB ones. It was a little update that made a big difference. Oh, and I want to see the bedroom door! You guys are such teases! Are you going to do a book signing in NoVa/DC/MD?
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, ORB doorknobs are definitely on my to do list! As for a book signing in Nova/DC/MD, we definitely think we’re going to be there! Will keep you posted!

That’s good… because I just read that a Jonathan Adler store is opening in DC in May!!! That would be a cool spot!

Loved the tour!
Normally I don’t comment, but today I just HAD to say: Your version of “totally taken over by kids’ toys” (in reference to your shower) is COMPLETELY different than mine!
Beautiful home.
YoungHouseLove says
Bwahahaha, the funny thing is that the last time I looked they were all over but I turned the corner and lo and behold John had cleaned them up since we had company coming. Happy surprise! Haha. But I didn’t show you all the washcloths with cartoon characters hanging on the other side of the shower…

You too should be proud of yourselves. You have accomplished so much in such a short time!
Sherry has anyone ever told you, you look like Alexandra on the show Nikita. You remind so much of her, lol.
Great job on all your house projects. BTW where did you purchase your ceramic dog, I’ve been looking everywhere.
YoungHouseLove says
Never got that one! Lately I get the Game Of Thrones girl who is always naked the most (awkward) and it used to be Rachel McAdams all the time. Now I have to go google the Nikita girl!

Hey Guys, I love what you have done with your new house! I wanted to tell you that I found your blog in January and pretty much read every single post (I just moved to a new state and don’t have a job yet so I have a lot of free time!) I wanted to tell you how amazing it is how you can transform your houses. We are closing on our new house in 2 weeks and you guys seriously inspire me. I don’t think I would have liked the house that we decided on as much if I hadn’t see what you have done to your old houses. Our house was built in 1968, and while the current owners have updated the house, I still have BIG plans for it. So I guess this long comment is to thank you for being “over sharers” and inspiring me to make my new house my home. Thanks Guys!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw, you’re welcome Kimberly. Thanks for the kind words, and gooooood luck with your new house!

Quick question that has me curious about all your secret projects…what are you planning on doing with them? Giving them away/selling them/distributing them throughout the house? Will you be allowed to show them once the book is published?
P.S.: The house looks beautiful!
YoungHouseLove says
Many of them will be auctioned (with all proceeds going to charity) and a few of them will stay in the house since they’re so sentimental to us (our favorite projects from our first book! aw!). Once the book is out we’ll finally be allowed to spill all the beans. Can’t wait!

Sheela says
The video really shows the warmth and dimension of the kitchen. Everything is looking really great John and Sherry! And I agree, having guests over is great motivation for keeping the house clean!
Blog Reader says
Sherry, You really need to work on your video skills. You really shouldn’t make such sudden moves with the camera. It should flow from one shot the the next. Just because your eyes move really fast from one thing to the next, the camera shouldn’t. Just a helpful tip. I still Love you!! :)
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks Blog Reader! I definitely do my best to warn people before they hit play (and again within the bulleted notes). I’m just a terrible videographer, and John seems to have a much steadier hand. Working on it, though!

I actually tuned into Cougar town this week. After about 8 minutes, I was confused, so it was back to the Big Bang Theory for me. Maybe I’ll have to start at the beginning and catch up on demand, otherwise, I just don’t get it!

Haha, yes, I’m not sure anyone would get all the inside jokes (Big Karl, Tom Cruise run, etc) unless they watch it from the beginning…

Krithiga says
So excited about your deck / out door projects. Could you give us a teaser of what you are planning to do. We are planning to do something to our outdoor space too and i would love some inspiration!
YoungHouseLove says
If you get a chance to watch the video I actually mention the deck plans and show where we’ll be adding that, so hopefully that helps! Beyond the deck, we’d like to landscape around the front of the house and the patio since they’re looking pretty bleak. And eventually we’d love to plant some trees on the side and back of our house for more privacy and pretty leafy stuff. Haha.

I had to laugh when you walked into the hallway bathroom and said it was overrun with Clara’s bath toys (since there were like 3 toys in there, all neatly organized)! You should see mine! :)

I just went on a bad romantic comedy binge a few nights ago (I was emotional, okay? I regret it now.) where I proceeded to watch _Friends with Benefits_ (Mila Kunis) & _No Strings Attached_ (Natalie Portman).
Only because I have watched both of those (tolerable) movies in the past few days can I hear *both* of those girls in your voice. More Mila, though, I think? but that might be the sore throat thing.
YoungHouseLove says
It’s so funny how many times I get it (once in NYC while working at a store back in college someone was completely convinced that I was Natalie Portman just because of the voice thing and the fact that I lived in NYC). So strange!

Audio transcription is one of the funniest things ever! Can’t believe I just found it!
Love your house tours — its so weird the difference in perspective of your home than from all the pictures we see! I love the flow, and love that the kitchen really is the heart of your home!
Also– I totally talk with my hands when noone can see me too!! I always notice when I’m on the phone!! Isn’t that funny?!?!
Sarah says
Looking good, guys! You’re right it does make a huge difference being able to virtually walk through it all. Is that a cute little giraffe I spy on Clara’s floor by her closet? He’s super cute! Also have you switched out the mirror above the desk in the lounge? I seem to remember a darker one…? And I’m hugely intrigued to see what you can possibly do to a door!! Can’t wait for the book :)
YoungHouseLove says
Oh yes, he’s from Target. We actually registered for him randomly before she was born and my cousin got it for us. Love that thing! And as for the mirror in the living room that did get switched out (it used to be an oil rubbed bronze one, and the one that’s in there now used to hang in the kitchen over the fireplace).

Chantelle says
okaaaay… that gallery wall looks so sweet in “person”. Love Clara’s drawing desk in the living room as well. How is that working? Does she ever try to colour on the walls?
YoungHouseLove says
It works great! She can’t reach the wall while sitting down and we have a rule that she can only use her crayons when her bottom is in the chair (that way she doesn’t try to carry them all around and color on things). So far so good! Who knows when the tides will turn though. Haha.

You should have a look at building a DIY steadicam. Anywhere from 14 dollar (http://14dollarstabilizer.org/) to just a little bit more (http://www.yb2normal.com/DIYsteadicam.html) to get a great working one. And for you two it should be a piece of cake building it. :)
YoungHouseLove says
We use a little handheld flip camera (about the size of a cell phone) so I’m not sure it’ll work, but it’s worth a try! Thanks!

It should work just fine with a Flip. Here is an example video with the Flip Ultra HD with comparison with/without steadicam:

You guys are so funny “It’s kinda messy” That desk had, like, three papers and two books on it!
And “overrun with toys” We have a ducky collection in our kids’ bath — 175 ducks. Most are on shelves, but we have a giant mesh bag of them in the bath.
I have a big question for ya. (And this would be a great topic for posting on.) Cleaning! Do you have a cleaning person come in? Do you stay on top of everything yourself? Do you have a schedule? Is there a cleaning calendar? Or is it just something you do every day.
I did the cloth diapers thing for awhile, so I know that’s kind of a constant. (My kids are potty trained now, yay!) But, how often do you do the laundry, vacuuming, bathrooms, etc. Do you use vinegar for cleaning? I’m pretty sure Burger sheds less than my big fluffy spaniel/chow mix, but do you have dog hair issues at all? Tips would be great!
Do you have storage anywhere? Basement like your last place? The garage? Or is it all in the playroom and sunporch? Just an idea.
Your house looks great! Of course, it probably helps that you are in it all day, instead of the 2-3 hours of waking time I get in my house. (Home from 6:30-8:30 pm. I usually fall asleep around 10 or 11 and don’t really want to be cleaning after a full day. Half the time we fall asleep tucking the kids in. Curious George and Dr. Seuss books are not only soothing for kids, apparently.)
YoungHouseLove says
The funny thing about the bathroom overrun by toys is that it was and John must have cleaned it up right as our guests were on their way because I totally walked in there expecting to see chaos and it was cleaned up! Although I didn’t pan over to the washcloths with all the cartoon characters on the other side of the tub. Haha. As for cleaning, we have a bunch of posts about that in a cleaning section (called Keep It Clean) on our Project page here. Hope it helps!

It’s all very interesting and we love Yvonne and her blog! We actually had a great chat about it in the first page of comments on this post and it’s definitely something to think about! We hear that Ben (of Pinterest) is working on changing things and hopefully evolving Pinterest in a way that protects both users and people who don’t want to be pinned (there is already a new “block code” out that people can put on their site if they don’t want to be pinned). Lately I have been trying to only pin things from sites with a Pin It button (like we added to the bottom of our posts) since it’s a great indicator that they love being pinned! It’s definitely something we’ve been keeping an eye on though, in hopes that things will change for the better!

I love your home — it is warm and beautiful.
The layout is so unusual. Or maybe it’s an E Coast thing? I was curious: Did the former owners use the current dining room as their living room? Was that space off the kitchen with the fire place used as a dining room? Seems funny to walk into the dining room, but I also love the spacious flow and feel of all the rooms.
Thanks for the tour. It helps the individual posts/pics make more sense!
YoungHouseLove says
Yup, the old owners used our dining room as a formal living room (with our giant living room in the back we didn’t have a use for another one) and the office was once the dining room (too small to fit our huge family, and we needed a spot to work since we both do it from home). In our first house you actually entered into a room with the dining zone in it, so maybe we’re just used to open living like that? Once we add a little entryway (with a rug to define it, a console table, some art, etc) it’ll hopefully make a lot more sense! In our first house it seemed to work.

Forgot to say in my previous comment that I also love when Sher-dog comes out for a second when talking about the closet light!
(NOT official medical advice: Natural remedy to help soothe your shortness of breath/lingering bronchitis: Mix 2-3 teaspoons of eucalyptus oil with a couple (3-4) tablespoons of a carrier oil (olive oil, coconut oil, almond oil, peanut oil, etc (not canola)) and rub it on your chest and neck. It is very similar to vicks vapor rub but is all natural and has a higher concentration of eucalyptus oil (fyi, never put pure eucalyptus oil directly on your skin and as you probably already know, oils stain). :-)

Btw, since you had said a while back that tulips are your new fave flower I thought I’d share a little tip with you that I learned a couple of weeks ago. If you cut a tiny, half-inch slit vertically at the top of the stem near the petals, your tulips will stay perfectly straight and not get bendy! Just FYI. :)

I have to say, although I was excited for the move and to see you guys make another house look beautiful, I was really sad to see you leave the old house since I just loved it SO much.
but you know what? I love this house even more. You guys have my style exactly. I’m going to be the creepy creeper over here wishing I could duplicate your home and live in it. There is rarely something you do that I really don’t like. Some stuff I probably wouldn’t do myself but still really like seeing, but it’s a rare thing for you guys to do something I just do not like. I love how your house is coming together and I’m so excited to see what else you do now that the kitchen is (basically) done.

Aw thanks so much Bryanna! I felt the same way about leaving our first house. It was our first love, and it felt so cozy. It took a while for this house to really start feeling like home, but we’re so happy that we have a new place to pour some love (and oddly enough some sweat, we must like to sweat) into! Name the day and I’m there to see it in person! Ha! You all are like local celebrities here in Richmond. I was getting a pedicure a few weeks ago (which I might add, rarely happens nowadays thanks to my little sidekick…so don’t be jealous…ha!), but I sat and listened to two “older” ladies talk about how much they love your blog. And I honestly felt like they were having some sort of unspoken debate over who loved you more, who had been following your blog the longest, and who knew the most about you all. It was so funny!
And while I am jabbering, thanks again for the S.J. Ryan info. They just added some additional recessed lighting in our kitchen/family room and did a great job. Now I just have to someone to patch the 15 small holes they had to cut in our ceiling. I just don’t trust myself to do it in such a highly visible area of our home.
Also, a while ago I asked about Clara’s music class. I was heartbroken to find out that the MusikGarten instructor closest to us in Midlothian just stopped teaching. Thankfully I found a nearby Kindermusik class that I will be starting with my 10 month old next week. Can’t wait, she is OBSESSED with music. I have been so impressed by how much Clara knows – surely a testament to how hands on you and John are with her. I am hoping this music class will help me find new ways to introduce colors, shapes, animals, rhymes, etc. with Adeline. Sorry, tangent, but thanks again for the music class info.
And finally, happy belated birthday! I turned 30 too last Thursday! Yay for March babies!
YoungHouseLove says
Aw happy birthday Rachel! And that’s hilarious about the overheard pedicure convo (and it’s too late, I’m already jealous that you got one since my toes look… baaaad). The video shows how wonderfully cozy and yet light and airy your house is! The photos definitely don’t do your kitchen remodel justice. I’m so impressed that you two were able to see all this potential in an old ’50’s ranch house! I think your great “vision” is what keeps me hooked… you always end up with these amazing results that I never would have imagined possible!
I hate saying negative things here, and so I say this with total love, but Sherry I think you need to hand the video camera over to John and step away. I can read tiny book print in a car for hours, and yet I feel so nauseous after watching that video… haha. I know you provided ample warning but I’m addicted to YHL and couldn’t resist! Please don’t take offense. On the positive side, your sick voice is definitely sexy. Girl crush! :)
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, thanks Dina! Someone posted about how to make something to help stabolize the camera so I might have to DIY something! Haha. Or just not run around like crazy with our guests in the driveway trying to make a last minute video. I think the time pressure spooked me. Haha.
